Audi is adding a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 to its R8 portfolio, Autocar reports.
The new 90-degree, gas-powered engine will share duty in the Porsche Panamera, Audi RS5
and RS4.
It could offer as much as 500 hp with a few tweaks, though the current version in the
Panamera 4S makes 434 hp and 405 lb-ft.
But even that makes more power and torque than the original R8's 4.2-liter V8, which
had an output of 430 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque.
Audi did tell Autocar that the V6 will come with more than one power output.
The current base Audi R8, now V10 only, starts at $164,900.
We're wondering if a new, lower-powered model could move that price into the low $100K
range, especially if the company offers a rear-wheel-drive version, like the new R8
RWS.
A sub-$100K version sounds too good to be true, even if that V6 gets down to 400 hp/400
lb-ft for some reason, but we can dream.
That price would line it up almost exactly with AWD sports cars like the Nissan GT-R
and Porsche 911 Carrera S, making for a helluva shootout.
Also, the current V10-laden R8 weighs in at about 3,600 pounds.
A TT V6 could cut at least a couple hundred pounds, and that's never a bad thing.
Autocar has a few spy shots, but it looks nearly identical to the current model.
There's just some redesigned exhaust and rear-end stuff, which is good since this 12-year-old
design would still be a jaw-dropper if it showed up at the New York auto show next month.
Audi knows it has a winner; adding more power options will only make it better.
Now if we could just get that gated six-speed manual back in the cockpit, we'd really have
something.
