WORST Rappers in the Game? - 6IX9INE (Episode 20) - Duration: 15:14.
SCUUUUUUUM GAAAANNNG! 6IX9INE, more like 6iiiiiiii-exual misconduct with a minor.
(Senseless Ranting).
Welcome back to another episode of Worst Rappers in the Game where we will be looking at Daniel
Hernandez also known as 6ix9ine, aka Mister Ah Ah (Clip: 6IX9INE Interview with DJ Akademiks).
So to get an opinion on his music, I listened to the Scummy Scumz mixtape, F the Haters,
and Day69, which ironically has a track list that sounds like a baby saying its first words.
Ironic because he was charged with s3xu@l misconduct with a mi-.
So, is 6IX9INE one of the worst rappers in the game based purely off of his music?
This is CDTVProductions and let's find out.
And in the first segment of this lovely lil series, we will be looking at his voice.
So 6IX9INE is quite a shout-ey bloke, I think that's quite clear to anyone that listen
to his music.
And I have quite a lot I could say about this, as it's pretty much his go to delivery.
I have to say, his loud aggressive voice really works best on the tracks with the hardest
beats, when his producers can make a beat with some real power behind it, that is when
his voice really contributes to the excitement of the track.
The best example of this for me is the strong opening track BILLY from his Day69 project.
(Clip: 6IX9INE "BILLY").
6IX9INE's shouting works exceptionally well on that dramatic type of beat.
Other songs that show this quite well are Kooda and Doowee, yeah I know, "he says
Kooda and Doowee funny" ha.
Ha.
Those are the tracks where his vocal style fits in.
However, this particular type of delivery he favours really limits his versatility.
One thing you'll notice on his Day69 mixtape is every single track has the same delivery
from Tekashi, with some differences that are only really subtle throughout.
This really decreases the sounds that he can pull off, and that's a shame.
Nothing illustrates this better than the track Keke which features Fetty Wap and A Boogie.
6IX9INE sounds out of place on his own song, because Fetty and A Boogie's styles fit
the tracks aesthetic way more.
(Clip: 6IX9INE "KEKE (feat.
Fetty Wap & A Boogie)") That type of track doesn't call for shouting.
This was an issue I also noticed whenever Tekashi did a feature on a Trippie Redd song.
On the songs Owee and Poles1469, Trippie opts for a more tranquil sound, which matches the
tone of the beat, and 6IX9INE's boisterous screaming just isn't compatible with these
tracks.
That's my main problem with his delivery, whilst it does contribute to the hype of some
tracks, it's so limiting.
I think I can understand why he goes for this delivery though.
If you listen to tracks such as 69 or Pimpin' where he uses his reguar voice, you'll notice
that he doesn't have a bad voice necessarily, its just completely unremarkable.
The shouting is clearly kind of a gimmick to stand out from the crowd.
I understand why he does it, but he does it too much to the point where it'll be stale
by the time his next project rolls around.
Also, if you want a good laugh, listen to the autotuned section of the 6IX9INE song
Inferno.
It's laughably bad.
I've got to give him a 2.5/10 here.
This delivery can work wonders on certain tracks, BILLY is going on my hype playlist,
but there's so many issues that stop me from giving him a higher score.
And for our second segment, we will be looking at 6IX9INE's flow.
Now if I'm being honest, I'd have to start this off by saying that 6IX9INE has a really
by the numbers flow most of the time.
It's an issue he had earlier on in his career, and that issue definitely has continued through
to the present day.
You can hear this in songs like Hellsing Station, which I definitely will talk about more later,
but on that song his flow just stands out as nothing special, especially when he's rapping
next to someone like Zillakami, who actually has a pretty nice flow on that song.
Most of the time his flow doesn't offer anything innovative or exciting.
And a lot of the time, when he's rapping and manages to catch a good flow, he sticks
with that flow for so long you get bored of it.
This happens on the track Oof.
(Clip: Spoken Arcane "Oof (feat.
6IX9INE)").
He only has two flows on that verse, and only the second one is really nice and he sticks
with it for too long.
Also an incredibly minor issue, but something worth bringing up is why the h3ll did you
use the same flow on Gummo and Kooda?
Gummo was a huge hit that really introduced you to so many people, so why would you use
the same flow on your very next hit song?
Sure it's a catchy flow, but It kinda sets people up to think you can't think of new
flows already.
Now this has been a mostly negative segment so far, I know party pooper productions over
here, but he has impressed me with his flows some times.
He surprised me a little bit on 93, where he didn't necessarily use a complex flow,
but it was definitely different to what he normally does.
(Clip: 6IX9INE "93").
This also happens on the following track Doowee.
And then I guess his flow is quite good on the song Go Crazy, but it sounds quite messy
on there.
There are some instances where he'll surprise me with some flows that aren't completely
by the numbers, but it doesn't happen as often as I'd like it to.
I'm gonna give 6IX9INE a 3.5/10 for his flow rating.
Out of all the big artists that have came up recently, he definitely doesn't excel
past them flow.
Flow is probably the easiest thing for him to improve though, so I hope he does so in
his future music.
Oh, and for part 3, yay, we got the big old fun one, its the lyrics.
6IX9INE is a rapper who embodies style over substance.
And when I say style, i don't necessarily mean artistically, I mean having multicoloured
dreads and a quirky animated mixtape cover, over substance.
I mean seriously, what can I say about this.
It's really hard to find a track where he doesn't talk about his gang being the hardest,
shooting holes through other people, or making women get gushy gushy.
There's genuinely nothing here.
I scanned through almost every lyric he's ever laid down, and honestly "put a hole
in his head, he a dolphin" is the closest thing to a bar that he's ever laid down.
On quite a few songs, he even actually uses single syllable rhyme schemes.
And that's a problem in my opinion, because even the most basic rappers in the world know
how to use some form of multisyllabic rhymes, which 6IX9INE does do sometimes, I'm not saying
he always does single syllable rhyming, but tracks like Sinaloa, Buba, & Shinigami are
next level simplistic.
There's really not much else I can say, 1/10 lyrically.
And for our next part, we will be looking at his beat selection.
So 6IX9INE has decent beat selection in my opinion.
I mean the beats are mostly what made Day69 really listenable.
For example, on tracks like Keke where I don't exactly love 6IX9INE's delivery on it, the
beat makes it incredibly catchy and has made the song stick in my head more than I want
it to.
There's also a fantastic beat on Rondo, and one I love even though it's not fantastic
for 69's style is on the song Chocolaté.
(Clip: 6IX9INE "Chocolate") I think the instrumental there is crazy good.
That bass line, the synths, the vocal sample, this all combines to make this beat that I
think sounds really great.
6IX9INE's Hook does make it sound very cluttered, but just as a beat on its own, I think its
very well done.
And if you want to hear a very strong beat from earlier on his career, I'd recommend
checking out Hellsing Station.
My god the beat on that is hard, it has this cold, underground sound to it, and I didn't
expect something like that.
One of the best beats he's ever used.
However, speaking about his beat selection earlier in his career, it's not all that
great at all really when you take it as a whole.
Yes songs such as Hellsing Station and Scum Life have very good and hard beats, but the
majority of the time his early beats just sound like generic trap.
For example, the beat on Pimpin'.
It really sounds like the most generic style of trap beat around to me.
(Clip: 6IX9INE "Pimpin'").
No offence intended to those who produced for Tekashi early on, but the beats from early
on in his career don't sound original enough.
Then if we move back to current day, there are also some beats I don't like even though
he does have more of a defined production style now.
For example Gummo is a beat that's not awful on its own, but mixed with 6IX9INE's style
I can't stand it.
I don't even think this beat was originally made for him.
I was just about to say, who thought this beat would sound good with his voice?
The kind of eerie, mysterious sound that the beat has to it, does not fit 6IX9INE's in
your face style at all.
I don't understand how that's his biggest hit, its probably one of my least favourite
songs from him.
I can't listen to it.
Some other current beats of his I don't really like are Buba and 93 because of that
abrasive, obtuse bass.
Overall I'm gonna give 6IX9INE a 6.5/10 for his beat selection.
It is definitely better nowadays, some songs like Kooda and Keke are fantastically produced,
but he sometimes picks beats that do not gel well with him and remember we're taking
this as a whole over the 3 projects I heard from him.
Most of his earlier beat selection was so tired and is already outdated, so that's
why his score is lower than a 7.
And for part 5, we're just gonna be looking at my enjoyment of 6IX9INE's music, as a whole.
So as stated at the start of this video, I listened to Scummy Scumz, F the Haters and
Day69 to form an opinion on 6IX9INE.
Out of all of these, my favourite was definitely Day69, even though that still wasn't a great
project, I liked it the most.
The production was pretty nice throughout, with some fantastic beats, and 6IX9INE delivered
some good performances on there.
I got a few songs out of it that I do like, namely BILLY, RONDO, KEKE, KOODA & CHOCOLATÉ,
although that last one is mainly for the beat.
As for Scummy Scumz, my enjoyment of this was significantly less.
The beats were not unique or special in any way, and the only thing that was somewhat
interesting about it was hearing 6IX9INE's real voice, but that's it.
Then F the Haters was more of the same as Scummy Scumz, the instrumentals were slightly
better, the production was a little bit better, but other than that it was more of the same.
Still nothing that's gonna bring me back to that tape.
Overall, I'm going to give 6IX9INE A 3.5/10 for my enjoyment, with most of that enjoyment
stemming from Day69.
And a lot of that enjoyment really does come from his producers and sometimes the features,
but I can say that I'm happy I got some songs out of this to listen to in the future.
Part 6: Verdict
So overall, Mr 13 year old @ss slapper, and no that's not an accusation, that did actually
happen, check out my video on it.
He scores a 17/50, placing him at the 12th spot in my Worst Rappers in the Game list.
This positions him very slightly above 21 Savage and below Lil Uzi Vert.
Of course if you wanna check out the whole list so you can complain to me about it in
the comments, the full list will be in the description.
6IX9INE does have some very catchy songs, but when that happens I mainly have to give
credit to the producers.
He has a lot to
work on.

Poisons your veins

Turning my LAUNCHPAD into an ABLETON PUSH!! - Duration: 7:15.
Welcome back guys!
A few weeks ago, I did a tutorial on getting started with your Novation Launchpad, which
I'll link above.
As cool as the Launchpad is, the real reason I bought it was because my friend Edgar told
me that I could hack it into having essentially the same functionality as an Ableton Push,
for a LOT cheaper.
I bought this off eBay for $55, and used a software package called Arsenal LP1 to hack
it, which cost about $25.
That's $80, compared to around $600.
I'd say that's worth it.
This thing is so cool now!
So you buy the main software for your MIDI controller, whether that's a Maschine or an
MPC or a Launchpad, and then you buy matrix mode packs which extend the functionality.
I have all kinds of modes, from Note Plus mode, which gives you a drum sequencer when
a drum kit is loaded (show drum kit, play quick kick snare rhythm) as well as all the
beat repeat modes.
It also gives you the Scale mode from the Push when an instrument is loaded, which lets
you play notes and chords.
As well as Simpler mode, which lets you play chops from a Simpler.
That's actually how I made my last track "Soul Goal".
My personal favorite matrix mode, which was only an extra $5, is the Scale Sequencer mode,
which lets you sequence chords and notes and repeat them over and over again.
The creative possibilities with this are endless.
I'll get to showing that off at the end of the video.
First, let's work on getting set up with Arsenal, because it's honestly pretty confusing just
using the user manual and the website videos.
First, buy and install Arsenal from the NativeKontrol Website.
If you have a Launchpad S like I do, install Arsenal LP1.
Otherwise install the appropriate Arsenal pack for your MIDI controller.
Then, setup is as easy as running the respective installer for your operating system, whether
that's OS X or Windows.
Now, open up Live, or restart it if you had it open.
Go into Preferences, and click on the "Link MIDI" Tab.
You want to set your control surface to one of the Arsenal control surfaces, A through
F. Since I used LP1, mine are all LP1.
These are separately configurable modes, for when you have many matrix mode packs and you
want to set them to different buttons along the top and sides.
It'll make more sense in a second.
For now, I'm going to pick Arsenal LP1 B since I already have A configured.
Then set the Input and Output to be your MIDI controller.
You'll want "Track" and "Remote" to be on for the Arsenal device.
Now exit Preferences.
Doing this will create a "nativeKONTROL" folder in your root directory.
On mac, this is in /(rootuser)/nativeKONTROL.
On PC, this is in C:/Users/<username>/nativeKONTROL.
Inside the nativeKONTROL folder, you'll see a folder called Arsenal, and inside that you'll
see a folder for each of the configurable setups.
Let's go into the Arsenal_LP1_B folder.
You'll see two files, "Settings-General.txt" and "Settings-Matrix Mode List.txt".
For now, let's look at the "Settings-Matrix Mode List.txt" file.
Down at the bottom, you'll see MODE_1 through MODE_12.
Here is where you can put in your various Matrix Modes and assign them to certain buttons
on your Launchpad.
As you can see on this graphic.
MODE_1 and MODE_2 correspond to the "Session" and "User 1" buttons on your Launchpad.
The "User 2" button is the Shift key.
Pressing Shift and simultaneously pressing "Session" and "User 1" buttons gives you MODE_3
and MODE_4.
Pressing Shift and simultaneously pressing any of the side buttons will give you modes
5 through 12, which are all assignable in the settings file.
Now let's make this interesting.
I want to use NOTE_PLUS mode, which will give me the sequencer and keyboard mode capability
I'm seeking.
I buy and download this from the Arsenal website, and install it just as I did Arsenal LP1.
Now close Ableton if it's open.
Modify the Matrix Modes settings file, and let's put NOTE_PLUS as MODE_5.
You can figure out what the mode name is by consulting the Arsenal LP1 user manual, going
to the "MATRIX MODES" section on the sidebar, and scrolling to your desired Matrix Mode.
For me, that's Note Plus, and I can see that the name for this is NOTE_PLUS with an underscore.
I put this in MODE_5, and save the .txt file.
I then open up Live.
Now I can see that when I press the mixer and the top sidebar key on the Launchpad,
I go straight into Scale Mode since I have a piano on the track.
If I put a drum rack on this track, then it'll become a sequencer.
I can play some notes.
I can also use beat repeat functionality using the buttons on the sidebar.
When they're red, it's in Beat Repeat mode, and I can make a build up if I want to.
Pressing the volume key changes these buttons to selecting grid resolution, which allows
you to put different size notes into the drum clips.
You've also got Simpler chops!
So now you've got a drum sequencer, a scale mode, and Simpler chops all on your Launchpad!
NativeKontrol has a whole slew of other Matrix Modes, that you can download from their website,
and I'm so excited to try them out and start building out my live performances using this.
Scale Sequence mode is the one I'm most excited about, and you guys will most definitely be
seeing that in action soon.
I hope this video was helpful!
Please let me know if you have any other questions in the comments.
As always, like this video and subscribe to my channel for more awesome music and tutorials

MAKING FOOD OUT OF SLIME! HOW TO MAKE SLIME FOOD VS REAL FOOD DIY CHALLENGE - Duration: 18:49.
- [Adam] Here's the one I made, and here's the one Riley made.
Shoo.
Which one looks closest to it?
Bleh.
Hey guys, welcome to "Will It Slime?"
Today were making real food versus slime food, because we asked you what you wanted us to
make and you overwhelmingly said slime food versus real food.
So that's what were doing today and we may have some surprises.
We're gonna see who makes the better one and whoever loses may have to do something kind
of gross.
Lets go.
Our first challenge is a S'more ... is it S'more or is it S'more?
Sum-more?
- S'more ... no.
- S'more?
S'more...
We're gonna make a S'more.
A slime S'more, this is a real S'more, I may have to eat this in a minute.
We're gonna see who makes the better one, you let us know in the comments down below
who you think made the better slime S'more.
Let's go.
That is so good.
So good.
You want a bite?
I got chocolate on my hand.
Alright, hold on.
We got lots of food slime recipes in our book, Slime Sorcery.
There's the slime S'more recipe right there.
Check that out.
We're gonna do other recipes, some are in here, some aren't, but anyway check this out
where books are sold.
Only the best books of course.
First thing we need is our glue, I don't think we need a whole lot but you do whatever you
want.
There we go, glue.
Next thing we need: Sta-Flo.
Stay-Flo?
Sta-Flo, I don't care we call it "Stay-Flo".
Wait! Wait, wait, wait.
I just about forgot.
Something very big just happened, What very important thing just happened?
We hit one million subs!
You guys are awesome, we love all you guys.
You helped us hit one million subs and it's totally because of you.
We'll have an announcement coming up soon where we're gonna be a big giveaway, so keep
an eye out for that.
Let's get back to making some slime.
Stay-Flo, Sta-Flo.
Tomato, tomato.
Call it whatever you want.
Go for it.
- [Riley] I knew you were gonna do that.
- Mix.
It looks like melted ice cream.
Now that we have our white slime, now we have to add some clay, magic clay to it.
We gotta make some tan.
Let's make some tan.
There's your top and bottom cracker, here's my top and bottom cracker.
Oh my Gosh it's so, so sticky still.
Ugh, fold it in.
- It's faster to do it smaller.
- Yours came together, huh?
Let's share.
You know what we also need?
We need some fluffy slime.
We need more white, more white.
- No too much!
- Okay.
We need shaving cream!
Alright, add some shaving cream.
Make that fluffy slime we need for our marshmallow.
Okay.
- Hm.
- Mix it up.
I don't know what a did with my spoon.
I gave my spoon away.
Sta-Flo, no you added that.
- The Flo.
Ugh.
- I got mine.
It's lovely.
- Get it away from me.
- It's so fluffy, feel how fluffy that is.
Feels so nice on your skin, feels so soft.
First thing we gotta do is color some of our butter slime into chocolate, cause we gotta
make our chocolate.
Ready to make chocolate?
Here, you can have some.
We need some food coloring, here's some brown.
Gotta separate our butter slime so we have our crackers and our chocolate.
Maybe not.
Ooh, don't use all that.
Let me get some of that.
Ugh, that was stupid.
- Ah!
Good idea.
- That was nasty.
- Now we have to wash our hands.
- That's gross.
- Ooh it actually does take a lot of chocolate ... or brown.
It won't come out!
- Hey you don't need any.
- Let me give you some more, oh you need a lot more.
- You took mine.
- So we almost have our chocolate, mine's a little light, yours is getting closer.
Alright, Let me see your chocolate.
They're a little different.
Okay.
Let's make our cracker.
- That's brown.
- It'll be tan.
Brown slime is gross.
- Especially when you're mixing it.
- Just about got our cracker color, I don't know how close that is to cracker, but ... Can
I get a cracker?
Can I get a cracker for comparison?
Slime assistant, please?
Oh geez.
- Trying to run away from me.
Ah!
- Oh that's too brown.
We've got our colors, so lets start making our S'more.
First off, let's do a random shoutout.
This random shoutout goes to Sadie Kay.
Sadie Kay said, That's cool, at least you made it.
I hope soccer practice was awesome.
Wonderful.
Alright, let's make our S'more.
Can we get a plate, slime assistant?
Slime assistant, we need a plate.
- Slime assistant.
- We have to put this on here and make it square.
We can use our forks.
Look how dirty my fingers are.
Alright, race is on.
I'm about to get mine done.
Cracker number one.
Chocolate.
I'm beating you bad, little girl.
Chocolate.
Chocolate on the cracker, time for some marshmallow.
Mmm, look at all that marshmallow.
You know what, I actually like a lot of marshmallow on mine.
I actually love marshmallow.
I like marshmallow better than chocolate.
I'm doing a lot of marshmallow.
A lot of marshmallow.
Need a little more chocolate.
I'm about to beat you, I'm about to put my top cracker on.
Top cracker, then you have to poke your holes because as you can clearly see, graham crackers
have lines were you can pull them apart.
I don't know what they are.
Baking holes?
- Yes.
That is a top cracker.
- Done!
Tell me that does not look like a perfect S'more.
It looks like one you made, straight up out of the campfire.
- I messed up.
- Let us know who made the best S'more, who made the most realistic looking S'more.
I mean, really, clearly you can see my S'more here, here's the one I made, here's the one
I made and here's the one Riley made.
I think mine looks almost ... I think that's good enough to eat, really.
I mean there is that one but other than that.
Okay, let us know in the comments below who you think won the S'more challenge.
Three second challenge guys!
Hit that smash ... ugh.
Three second challenge guys, smash that like button as fast as you can, are you ready?
Three, two, one.
Okay I hope you smashed that like button.
I hope you did it just like Kathy Breitenstein who said, Yes.
So eloquently put, "I hit da button."
If you hit da button too, let's go.
Okay so now we're done with these.
Are we done with these?
Do I have to put this in my face?
I'm being told I have to put this in my face.
It's not a pie.
- Okay.
Let's move onto ... A chocolate sundae and we have to see who can make the slime chocolate
sundae that looks closest to that.
We need some shaving cream.
Shaving cream?
Whipped cream ... shaving cream, ugh.
- Oh!
- Get some sprinkles.
- No, mine.
- [Adam] You want some of this?
This is our challenge.
Chocolate sundae.
You want a bite of this so we can get an idea of what it tastes like?
I think it would help.
Okay.
Slime assistant.
First thing we need is some fluffy slime.
Oops, okay.
Thirty days later.
Sta-Flo.
- Whee.
- Oh my Gosh, what in the world?
Hey there.
I'll be back, I'm washing my hands.
- Okay, you do that.
- Alright, we have any...?
I just washed my hands.
You trying to pull something, little girl?
- No.
- Did she swap on me?
Did she swap?
Let me know in the comments.
Let us know in the comments if Riley is trying to trick her dad.
This is not ... you stole my slime.
Hey guys, if you haven't done this already, be sure to hit that subscribe button, and
when you subscribe hit the notifications bell so that you never miss a new video from "Will
It Slime?"
Ugh I gotta wash my hands again, why don't you wash your hands?
- No, I'm fine.
- Stole my good slime.
- I'm gonna go ahead and set aside some, that's gonna be my whipped cream on top.
I'm gonna put that to the side.
This is gonna be my chocolate ice cream.
Real quick before we add food coloring to it, let's do a random shoutout!
Random shoutout.
This one goes out to Fatima Rodarte, I hope I said your name right, We love all you guys,
you guys are awesome and the giveaway will be announced very soon.
We'll let you know in the next couple of videos when the giveaway is.
Let's add our brown food coloring, crazy lady.
Bloop, bloop, bloop.
- One more?
- Maybe a couple more.
- Smash, smash, smash, smash.
- Is Riley too crazy?
Do you think Riley's too crazy?
Let us know in the comments below.
Is Riley just right or is she a little off?
Let us know in the comments.
Ugh! that is nasty, just pulling through.
- [Mother] It looks like an eyeball.
- It's like a squid, like a squid eyeball.
- You keep busting them open like that.
- That's disgusting.
I don't even ... is yours coming together?
- Yeah.
- I don't even care if mine's brown anymore, this is like gray.
I've got to get this black stuff off my hands.
I've got some of it off.
Oh, yours came pretty brown.
Weird.
Now we need our slime in there.
- I want shaving cream.
- Oh okay.
Alright, clever.
You want sprinkles on top?
- Yeah.
- Okay, who won guys?
Let us know in the comments.
Whose... looks more ... what is that little thing on top?
- I don't know!
It looks like a little dog's tail wagging.
Awrf, awrf awrf!
Who has the better looking chocolate sundae, is it me or is it Riley?
Let us know in the comments below.
Here is our original, sort of, after we ate it.
Which one looks closest to it?
I think I won.
I think mine clearly is the winner.
Are you saying mine looks bad?
The color, perfect.
That looks just like chocolate ice cream.
Let us know who you think won in the comments below, let's ask everybody here, who won?
- [Group] Riley.
- Victory!
- So, okay.
Choose what you get to do.
Ugh!
- It banged you in the head.
- [Mother] You've got a toupee.
- Putting it around your ear.
- Hey!
Get out of here.
Okay, now for our next slime food challenge.
- Lemon meringue pie!
- Yummers.
You can't even tell that's lemon meringue pie, let me cut that so we can see.
Ugh, it's still frozen.
- Why won't you open?
- Oooh!
Lemon meringue pie, that's our next challenge.
Okay.
Drop that one!
I wouldn't eat that, I dropped that.
Seriously, I dropped it.
Let's make some slime.
- We need clear slime!
- Okay.
Clear ... clear slime.
Clear glue.
We need clear glue.
We're gonna make our lemon slime first.
Now we need some lemon yellow food coloring.
- I smell ... yes this.
- Strong smell.
Sta-Flo.
There you go.
- I made some egg yolk.
- Sticky.
Slime assistant, please bring us a bowl for our slime.
Thank you slime assistant.
Please everybody, let's give slime assistant a big hand.
- A big hand!
- Shoo.
So pretty.
- So pretty.
- Now it is time to make our lemon meringue pie.
We're gonna cheat.
We're gonna use our smooshed up S'more.
We smooshed our S'more, and that's what we're gonna use as our pie crust because we're lazy
and eh, so what?
We are.
We're gonna push that down into our pie plate.
- Pull it up as the crust.
- Pie crust, pie crust.
- Pie crust, pie crust.
- You put too much in it, you better take some of that out.
It's too sticky!
It's too sticky.
- Where's the other piece of yellow?
Don't forget to comment down below who's winning!
It's me.
- It's me.
Time for our topping.
I'm done.
Done!
- Oooh.
- Fancy pants.
Is that fancy pants over here?
Okay.
Whose pie won?
Ooh, this is a tough one because I think you might've pulled out on those other one's but
clearly, clearly this is the winner.
We've got something really special for the loser.
I mean, come on.
Come on.

The Biggest Mistake Autism Parents Make, with Jennie Trocchio, Ph.D. | EDB 119 - Duration: 15:51.
Hi, I'm Dr. Hackie Reitman.
Welcome to another episode of Exploring Different Brains.
Today, we're so lucky.
We have the return of my friend, Dr. Jennie Trocchio, who is an autism educational specialist
and so much more.
Jennie, welcome again to Different Brains.
Thank you so much for having me here.
I'm so excited to be back, to see you, to see your gang.
I appreciate the opportunity.
Now, my daughter Rebecca is always reminding me, "Dad, sometimes good intentions are
not enough," and parents have great intentions, but what is, like, some of the biggest, what
is the biggest mistake that parents make when they're interacting with their children on
the spectrum?
Or their adults, for that matter?
The biggest mistake?
Umm, I think, possibly, the biggest mistake I see is that parents are interacting at a
different, a different level, often a little bit too high, umm, and not taking the time
to just watch their kids, and think about what are they doing and why.
Sometimes I like to say, "Ok, let's just take a minute, back up.
And instead of just coming in with our agenda," and I guess that's really what I see parents
doing.
They come in with their agenda.
And, you know, today we're gonna do this, this, and this.
Umm, but instead, let's take a minute, watch what the child's doing, and think about where's
their attention, and what is their intention.
What are they trying to do?
And then we can kind of figure out why, and then we can join them in that.
Umm, but coming in and just kind of directing a lesson is what it feels like sometimes,
instead of just playing, taking time to, to find joy and to have fun and to smile.
And that's, uhh, I think that if every parent would take two hours out of a day, I know
that sounds like a lot, but when you see the data about how often we're on our phones and
devices, it's kind of small potatoes, but like two hours, that's, 15 minute increments,
totally manageable, excuse me as I'm processing this, umm, but two hours to play, to have
fun, to interact in a way-
To connect.
...that's enjoyable, to connect, I think if every family could do that, you would know
one another a lot better, relationships would be stronger, and would really be able to,
to get some momentum going.
Once, when I was speaking at a conference out in Tuscon, Arizona, umm, one of the, umm,
uhh, panelists and speakers was Raun Kaufman, who has a, he's got a center up in Massachusetts,
but, umm, he did a like a little play, a little, mini play, and, umm, the, to show how to connect
what you're saying.
And it's funny how this visual, this little, two minute play really made an impression
on me.
So there's a, a woman sitting on a park bench, reading a book.
And he, he plays it out two ways.
He comes over like a bull in a china shop, says, "Hey, you want to go to the movies?"
"Leave me alone; I'm reading my book," you know, kind of thing.
Umm, then he plays it out a different way.
He comes over and sits on the bench next to her, with his own book, doesn't say a word.
Does that for a couple of days.
Then, one day, he says, "Oh, what are you reading?"
She goes, "Oh, I'm reading this," "Oh, what a coincidence, I'm reading a book by
the same author," did that.
Then they decide to discuss the next day the author and everything, and then, after so
many days and everything and getting to know, he says, "Hey, there's a movie based on
a book by that author that's playing.
Would you like to join me?"
And that made an impression that if we, as parents, first take the time to connect, or
as teachers, or as doctors, or as you name it, employers, you get more out of it, too.
For instance, if you're an employer, I got to employers and say, "Look-" and to doctors
too, "...if you, you're already treating people on the spectrum; you may not even realize
it.
This will improve your bottom line.
You can make more money, Mr. Employer, Mr.-"
Mhm.
"...Doctor, umm, but you have to just treat everybody on an individual basis, because
we all, we all are different," And that's the essence of the DR, DIR Floortime is what,
what you're saying.
Absolutely.
Umm, how can we expand this to the adult population of those of us whose brains are different?
On an, on an adult level, I mean, I think you just actually used a great example of,
you know, having doctors just connect with their patients first, instead of just, you
know, looking at the symptoms and immediately saying, "Ok, well, this is wrong; this is
wrong, so this is how we're going to treat it," saying, "How are you feeling?
How are you?"
you know, "What, what do you like to do?
Let's find ways to fit what will work into your everyday routine.
Like how can we make this sustainable for you?
How can we make it effective for you?"
Because we're all so different that there, there's no one size fits all sort of strategy
that'll work, you know?
Not everyone can take a, you know, little, I don't know, little purple pill, and all
of a sudden, headaches are gone forever, you know?
That would be great, but that, that's not, that's not who we are.
No, and this time when I gave a talk to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, I
think it was their first neurodiversity talk; I said, "You know, remember that patient
who came in when you went to take off the fiberglass cast, and you turned on the loud
cast cutter, they went crazy and you thought it was just bad parenting and it slowed up
your office for a half hour?"
Mhm.
I said, "No, that, I didn't know my daughter's senses, all of her senses were hyper."
Yes.
"Touch, feel, smell, sound, lights, everything, and if you know that, then you can adapt to
it, and you might have used a plaster cast instead and have them soak it off-"
Mhm.
"...or something like that."
And the sensory bit is really so critical, and a lot of people don't know about it.
A lot of professionals don't know about it; a lot of parents don't know about it, but
the sensory needs are huge.
Umm, I've actually started doing, umm, talks in schools and inclusion classes for the typical.
"Typical", who's "typical", right?
The "typical" kids, umm, and I call it "Autism Superpowers".
And I find that so often, you know, a child might have behaviors that, that are quirky,
you know, that look weird or you don't really understand why, but so often if you just explain
to everyone the sensory bit, and you know, sometimes they hear things that you don't
hear.
Sometimes, they can't feel their bodies.
And you just explain it, but in terms of a superpower, and that's really how I view it,
umm, so many of our, I mean, the strengths in that are just tremendous.
But when you explain it, then people understand.
So in a classroom once, I gave a talk to, to the typical peers about this boy who had
very sensitive smell, for example, and he could smell things no one else could smell.
And one day, he, he was having an absolute tantrum in the classroom and the teacher immediately,
you know, "That's wrong, time out!" and kind of was pushing him away and was really
yelling at him.
And he was having a really hard time regulating, I mean, he was very upset because, well, we
didn't know why.
Umm, then one of the peers raised his hand and said, "Well, don't you remember?
He has the superpower of smell.
And can't you smell that pizza that's burnt from the cafeteria?
Like, don't you think that could be it?" to the teacher, who then immediately said,
"Well, I think you could be correct, so why don't we take a walk outside, you know,
and then come back and everything's fine."
I think you're right that when you understand how that individual's processing the world,
what they see, hear, feel, what they like, it changes the game.
And this gets into another thing where, you know, which goes to the education of our teachers.
It's not their fault.
Doctors, too.
Yes.
MDs get zero training on all this stuff.
But for instance, where, uhh, my daughter Rebecca was teaching part time, in, in a,
the Asperger's program along with her mentor, the special ed teacher Patty Fizzano, both
of whom contributed to the Aspertools book, umm, they would approach it just "common
sensically".
So they would give Rebecca the toughest students to tutor one on one in math.
And she had this one kid that they were going to throw out of the school; he was acting
out; he was snarling at everybody; you know, he was nasty, you know, wouldn't sit still.
And so she took him in another room after talking to the parents and the teacher and,
uhh, he's sitting there, like, snarling, and she goes, "Before we start, one thing: Do
you want to sit or do you want to pace?"
He goes, "You'll let me pace?"
She goes, "Yeah, as long as you do the work."
He's walking back and forth, no problem, getting hundreds.
Yes.
Yes.
Another kid, umm, wouldn't stop the self stimming.
You know, he's pounding his foot like that.
So what they did was they put a rubber kind of band across the bottom of his desk so he
could do it without it bothering everybody.
Mhm.
Instead of that ending his career, you have to leave the class or you have to be in a
spec-, you know, and it's the individuality which, to my surprise, in some, my reading,
I found that you get some of the most individualized teaching in the one room schools in rural
America, where each kid has their own computer and the teacher walks around.
And they're all different grades in the same thing, and, and kind of do it like that.
Another thing that was very uhh, interesting to me: I had an offer to become a professor
at Nova Southeastern but it sounded like too much work, but, umm, they have a wonderful,
wonderful, uhh, program there.
They have, uhh, Tom Temple with his whole, uhh, TRED, the Translational Research and
Economical Development.
In addition to their osteopathic school and all their other programs, they just brought
in an allopathic MD medical school.
And, uhh, the uhh, the dean of that school, umm, has uhh, brought in uhh, a, the method
of teaching where they've done away with subjects.
Umm, and it's very interesting.
So they're actually doing that right now at Nova Southeastern, in the medical school.
And umm, I think that the way things are moving, it's going to get back to, this is just my
opinion, the double edged sword of modern technology.
How are we going to use it?
And to what extent are you going to use it?
And to what extent are you going to isolate, uhh, the individual from real social situations?
And I don't know the answer to that.
I'm with you.
I'm with you 100%.
And, and it's interesting that you're, you're bring up these one room sorts of schools,
because I've seen a little bit of a trend popping up recently where, and you know I
run, I co-run a couple of great support groups for parents.
Umm, and a big issue that people are talking about right now is schools and you know, if
they don't love their school now, where are they going to go next year.
And people are kind of comparing options, and, and not super enthusiastic.
Umm, but I've been hearing about this new trend called "unschooling", and I think
that there might be something to it, and it's all about, umm, you know, learning in a totally
unconventional way.
So I actually visited a school recently.
It's up in Tamarac, called "The Evolve Learning Community", and what they do is they teach
things like, umm, executive functions, focus, concentration, peer competition through chess.
And chess is one of their subjects that's taught every day, and, and the kids really
enjoy it, and then they have problem solving time and they have, but, you know, it's a
very similar sort of concept.
The biggest advice you have for parents is to try to connect and spend time with your
kid, you know, it's, I've always been surprised, when I ask parents "What is your child interested
in?"
they, many of them don't have a good answer, and yes, the, the kid or the adult "What
are you interested in?", they're glad to tell you.
It's like nobody's listening.
Exactly.
There's just some sort of mismatch here.
Yeah.
But just taking time to play, you know, taking time to interact and taking time to put devices
down.
Umm, I think that's pretty big, because similarly, I ask every parent I meet, you know "How
do you guys play?" and it's amazing how often the answer, the initial answer is a
device, you know?
"Oh, we play Candy Crush.
We play Fruit Ninja," but that's not really playing, you know?
And if you think about play, traditional play with another pe-, it's with another person,
first of all, not a device, and you're using your body and you're thinking and you're communicating
and you're problem solving and, I mean, the benefits of play are just, it's like the perfect
therapy, all in one.
And I actually read recently that play is the number one way to umm, to increase the
neural connections.
Umm, wait, there's a term I'm thinking of.
What is it?
Umm, I want to say neurodiversity but that's not true.
Umm-
Neuroplasticity.
Thank you so much.
Neuroplasticity.
Play is the number one way to increase neuroplasticity in our brains.
And I think that's pretty huge, and the fact that we're not playing umm, it's, it, uhh,
it worries me, to be honest.
So I would like to see a little bit more play.
More play.
More play.
Well, that's what we're going to, you know, we're going to end this on a high note.
Play more!
Woo hoo!
Uhh, Dr. Jennie Trocchio, it's been such a pleasure to have you here.
How can people get in touch with you who want to get in touch with you directly?
So, um, feel free, I, to visit my website, umm, www.drjennietk.com.
I also have a Facebook page, Autism Education and Development Solutions, umm, I'm on Twitter,
I am on really, you name it, you can find me if you can spell my name, J-E-N-N-I-E T-R-O-C-C-H-I-O,
you can find me; I promise.
And I look forward to talking to anyone, everyone about how we can, you know, get the world
a little bit more; how can we get a little more play in the world, right?
Great.
Jennie Trocchio, thank you so much for being with us here at Different Brains.
Of course.
Thank you for having me.

He has a lot to
work on.
