Extra English Practice [mouse squeak]
Hi everybody and welcome back! Today we want to do a little pronunciation
lesson about two sounds that sometimes get confused: /f/ and /p/. Did you hear that?
/f/ and /p/ They're kind of quiet sounds. [laughter] Tell us about /f/. Alright /f/ - So to make /f/, you
have to put your top teeth on your bottom lip - /f/ - and then you just push out
air. That's it! There's no voice, so it doesn't have any sound. That's why
they're so quiet. Exactly. It's like a whispered letter. It's kind of fun to say, though.
/fffffffff/ This one can go on and on and on and on. Right, you can do it for as long
as you have air to push out. I was going to say it can go all day, but you have to
breathe. Yes, breathe in at some point. [laughter] So top teeth, bottom lip. /f/
And /p/ has two lips touching each other and you're pushing air out, but the same as
with /f/, there's nothing happening in your vocal cords. There is no vibration.
It's a voiceless sound. They're both voiceless sounds. /p/ /p/
Unlike /f/ where the air
can just keep flowing, /p/ is a stop. So the air will stop. /p/ When you lips are
together, it's hard for the air to come out. That's right.
You should also be able to feel a little bit of..a little puff of air. If you hold
your hand and say /p/, you should feel it. That's right. We put on a lot of air when
we make the /p/ sound. Yeah, it's kind of exhausting.
Examples. So let's hear some examples. For example I could say fan, like this, fan or
pan-pan. Can you hear the difference? fan and pan Another example - file and pile
Another one - fool fool and pool pool
fort port
funk and punk That's the best example. When it comes
to learning sounds, there's two things you really need to be able to do. One is
to listen and understand.. hear the difference, and the other is to produce.
say the sounds accurately. So we're going to practice both today! Here we go. First
of all we have a game to help you practice your listening, and this for
this game you're going to need to print off or draw this pyramid. We play like
this - we start at BEGIN and then you will hear one of us say a sentence and in
that sentence will be a word that either has an F or a P. So for example, I'll say
I bought a new FAN or I bought a new PAN. If you hear fan, move to the F. If you
hear pan, move to the P. And from there you move down on the next one, and down,
and down, and down, and at the end we see if the number you found is the number that
we found. Alright let's try. Let's try it. So I'm going to start by reading.
See if you can get the same number as Misha. Ok, Misha, the sentence is
I bought a new fan or pan (fan/pan) Okay, number 1? Yep, so we're starting at BEGIN
BEGIN, that's right. Begin. I bought a new pan. Can you say it again?
I bought a new pan. Okay. I bought a new fan. mm-hmm I bought a new fan.
That was your third sentence? Yep. Next, I bought a new fan. Okay. Next, I bought a new pan.
Okay. Where are you? I ended up at number four. How about you? Number 4?
Good. So this time I'm going to say either it's a big file or it's a big
pile. You ready? I'm ready. Okay begin. It's a big pile. It's a
big file. It's a big file. It's a big pile. It's a big file. I ended up at number
five. Hopefully you did too. This time there's..there's a fool or
there's a pool. Which one would I rather see? I'm not sure. A fool is more
entertaining, but the pool is more fun. It is more fun. Okay - fool and pool
Okay, begin. Begin. There's a pool. okay There's a pool. okay There's a fool.
mm-hmm There's a fool. There's a pool. Okay
I ended up at number four. Mmmm. What about you guys? My turn! Your turn. I'm
going to say either I like funk music or I like punk music.
Which do you like? Oh funk for sure out of those two options. What about you?
Me too. Yeah. All right. But I might say either. Of course. Just to throw you off.
So starting at BEGIN, first sentence
I like funk music. Next sentence, I like punk music. Next, I like punk music.
I like punk music. I like funk music. Number three.
Number three, good. If you didn't get those, look
in the description and there's little numbers..number links that will take you
back to whichever one you need to listen to again. You can try them all again.
Okay, so to practice these sounds we're going to play a little game - like we love
to do - where we give..we have a category and we try to think of as many things in
that category that start with one of those letters as possible. Okay so...
So, category, Misha, is food words. Okay. How many food words can you think of
that begin with a letter F. Great. In 15 seconds.
Okay. I love it. Yep. And begin. French fries, falafel, fettuccine, fresh fruit,
fried vegetables, fruit juice, and... Time's up. Ok. That was pretty good. I did all right, right?
Yeah. Okay so now you're gonna do the same thing - also food ..food - with the
letter P. Okay. Are you ready? I'm ready. Okay, go. Peaches, pears, pineapple, potatoes,
pasta, uh-huh portobella mushrooms, oh pancakes, uh-huh
Oh persimmon, ummm, what's that..what's that meat that we don't cook [ding] I dont' know.
Prosciutto. [talking over each other] Oh yeah, you're done, you're done.
You got too involved in the game. Exactly. You shouldn't leave me to watch the timer.
I think P is easier than F. Or you're just smarter than me. Maybe I'm really good at this one.
So this is actually my favorite part of when we talk about sounds and that is the
tongue twister! It's her favorite part 'cause she's much
better at it than I am. I have some weird talent. I know, it's very impressive.
I have a nice tongue twister for you today with /f/ and /p/ sounds in it. Okay. Wanna hear it?
Mmhmm I despise the feel of a fuzzy peach, so I prefer to peel the peach.
mm-hmm Please help; two people can peel it fast. We'll eat it on the porch as
folks walk past. I like it. It's a nice little story. Umhmm. Kay, you wanna try?
I do want to try. I despise the feel of a fuzzy peach, so I prefer to peel the
peach. Please help; two people can peel it fast. We'll eat it on the porch as folks
walk past. Good job. Thanks. Do you mind the fuzzy...fuzzy feel of the peach? Um
no, no really. Do you? No. I just love peaches. I don't care, fuzz or no. I find
if you wash them uh-huh then the fuzz kind of goes away anyway. problem solved.
We won't need that riddle. But it's fun to say. It is. Ok, let me try again.
[Larissa says tongue twister]
Nice. So we're going to see if we can speed this thing up. Speed it up. Here we go, ready?
Give yourself a speed. You do the snapping better so you give me a
speed. Let's see. Okay, start slow. I despi... [false start] You have to start with I desPISE...
[Misha says tongue twister]
That was good! Thank-you. ..slow.
[Larissa says tongue twister]
Nice. Okay, speed it up.
[Misha says tongue twister]
Good! Thank you. [Larissa says tongue twister]
What? I think I said POLKS walk past. I didn't even hear it, so...
Oh, nuts! Shouldn't have told us. My fingers are getting tired
I'm going to hit my leg. Too much snapping. [Misha says tongue twister]
Woo! You're better than me today. No, no. Here we go.
[Larissa says tongue twister]
...eat it on the porch as POKES walk past
POKES walk past! She can't..you can't get that last line. Folks, Folks walk past. Pokes walking past?
I don't know what that would look like. What is that? Ok..[Larissa setting the speed]
I despise the feel. No, I can't even do it right at the beginning. I despise the feel of the PU..no!
Of the PUZZY FEACH! The puzzy feach. Try again. All right, last one.
[Misha says tongue twister!!!]
Nice! Ok, you. [Larissa says tongue twister]
..We'll eat it on the FOLKS as PORCH walk past. [laughter]
She just can't think of that last line. I don't have mad skills. No, today. I don't know what's going.
I wanna try once more. Yeah, try again. Maybe snapping's better. Yeah.
[Larissa says tongue twister]
..We'll eat it on the FORCH... PORCH as folks walk past. What's a forch?
It's a new thing we're gonna.. we're gonna build. And on it we're gonna eat "puzzy feaches".
"Puzzy feaches" Wow. That was a good effort. But good for you!
Well, who knew? Congratulations. We'll have to do more tongue twisters because last time
you definitely beat me. I thought I was just amazing, (I thought so, too) but actually
I'm just L and R savvy. Yeah, just good at L and R. All right. That was fun.
You can try it..at home. The words are also in the description. That's right. Lots of
stuff is in the description. Yeah, check that out.
