[ ♪ Intro ]

When you see a map of the solar system, it looks like all of the planets are orbiting

the Sun in a flat, two-dimensional plane -- but that's not just to save paper.

While there is a little wiggle room, the planets really are orbiting on mostly the same level.

And we've actually known that since before telescopes existed, just by charting where

the planets and Sun appear in the sky.

But why are their orbits so flat?

Well, it all comes down to how the solar system formed.

Our stellar neighborhood started out as a giant, roughly spherical cloud of gas and

dust particles.

And that cloud had a very tiny amount of spin.

Then, for some reason, it started collapsing.

Astronomers aren't 100% sure what triggered that collapse, but most will say it was probably

a nearby supernova.

Regardless, gravity caused everything in that cloud to pull itself together.

And as the blob got smaller, it started spinning faster.

This is because of a principle called conservation of angular momentum.

Basically, an object's angular momentum describes its tendency to stay rotating.

How much angular momentum that object has depends on two things: how its mass is distributed,

and how fast it's spinning.

If either of those properties changes, the other has to compensate so that the total

angular momentum stays the same, or is conserved.

So as that giant space cloud got smaller, it had to start spinning faster.

And eventually, that spinning generated so much force that it flattened the cloud into

a disk shape.

It's like how spinning a ball of dough gets you a pizza crust.

We don't just know this through math, either.

We can actually observe these disks forming around young stars in our galaxy!

We're literally witnessing solar systems being born!

In our solar system, as time went on, some particles of dust and gas in that disk kept

colliding and sticking to one another, which formed larger and larger space rocks.

Most only got enough mass to make potato-shaped asteroids, but others eventually became Earth

and the other seven planets.

And since they all formed out of the same flat, swirling disk of material, all the planets

in our solar system orbit in the same plane and, as a bonus, in the same direction around the Sun!

Now, there are plenty of smaller objects that have really inclined, or angled, orbits -- like

Pluto, asteroids, and comets.

These all probably started out with flatter orbits, but got kicked into more extreme positions

by Jupiter and Neptune as the planets moved into their current places.

Then again, those planets also just flung a lot of objects out of the solar system entirely.

So, Pluto and its lot could have had it a lot worse.

It might seem weird or even unique, but the fact that our planets orbit on the same plane

is pretty normal, and it happens in lots of other star systems, too.

But, hey, our solar system has a lot of other weird stuff to make up for it.

Like us.

Thanks for asking, and for watching this episode of SciShow!

Each day, I start from listening to the Word.

Each day, I open the Gospel that day. (I don' t listen to 'Ewangeliarz'/ 'the Gospel'.)

I listen to Lord, asking to tell me what He' s prepared that day to tell Jędrzejewski.

What do I mean when I ask Him for a word? Do I mean information, some new knowledge

or even to hear something I'll share with others? Is it information? No, it isn't!

That's what today's Word of Jesus reminds of.

He says,' Those who'll hear the Word will live. They will come forth from death to life.

Those who'll hear the Word will rise from the dead

Those who'll hear the voice will live.'

This is the first and foremost purpose of listening to the Word.

To make, by Its reviving power, sound, strength and power hidden in the Word,

us come forth from death to life, from hopelessness to openness to all God's promises.

When I'm apathy-stricken, the Word lifts me up. The Word is to revive, not to inform.

Early Detection and Screening of Colorectal Cancer Saves Lives - Duration: 0:38.

Hi there, Dr. Peter Senatore again,

talking this week about how early detection of

colorectal cancer can greatly increase

the chance of a successful treatment.

Your risk increases as you get older.

If you're over the age of 50,

there is no better time than now to get screened.

Most colorectal cancers develop from non-cancerous polyps.

Screening tests can identify and allow removal of these types of polyps

which can greatly reduce your risk of getting colorectal cancer.

Remember, early detection can prevent the development of cancer.

Preview.

Season 2 of This Is Us has done extremely well and maintained its title as one of the best shows on primetime television.

The post-Superbowl episode of the show attracted nearly 27 million viewers, which made it the show's largest same-day audience, according to Vulture.

The good news? The ending this season is promised to be more light-hearted than last season's finale.

Mandy Moore has had an especially grueling job on the show.

Her character has gone through emotional turmoil, but Moore has pulled it off incredibly well.

Fogelman says of her work, "I think she deserves to be sitting in the category with our fanciest actresses who were doing work on TV right now… I genuinely truly believe it.

And so it's nice to see people recognizing that.".

Asked if the show plans on aging her more, and if we're going to see older iterations of Rebecca, Fogelman said, "Yeah, it's possible.

We have some big plans in how we play with time, but Mandy has such a classic face and look that strangely it allows for aging in a really interesting way because she would always remain classically beautiful in a way that's not typical or normal." In reference to the post-Super Bowl episode, specifically, Fogelman said, "That was what was so nice about our Super Bowl episode where we had the entire country watching the story.

It was such a showcase for Mandy, because of the high-level degree of difficulty stuff she was having to do in those episodes as the whole country was watching.".
