Youtube daily report Mar 15 2018

If you saw our video about becoming your parents,

you learned how you could pick up some of your parents' habits and traits—

although ultimately your decisions are in your control.

And turns out, you could get some really unhealthy things from your parents, too.

So you know, we're going to talk about disturbing behaviors

like domestic violence and child abuse.

Just in case you'd like to avoid those things.

[INTRO ♪]

Psychologists use the phrase intergenerational transmission of violence

to refer to the fact that children who grow up with abuse

are more at risk of being abusive as adults.

In other words, "violence begets violence."

Psychologists have also found ways that people avoid this cycle,

so it's not a definite thing.

But we do know that growing up with violence creates risk.

For example, a 2010 study published in the Journal of Interpersonal Violence

followed a random sample of a thousand 7th and 8th graders

until they were an average of 33 years old.

Overall, adults who were abused as children,

ranging from neglect to physical or sexual violence,

were almost two and a half times more likely to mistreat kids.

But it also mattered when the subjects of the study

actually experienced abuse in their lives.

Adults who were abused as adolescents were

almost five and a half times more likely to be abusive

than a person who hadn't experienced any violence in their home.

But the effect basically went away for people who were

only abused as young children, when they were less than 12 years old.

So they seemed more likely to escape the cycle of violence.

It's worth mentioning that the control group—

those who hadn't experienced violence as kids—

wasn't immune to developing violent behavior, either.

They just didn't seem to carry that extra risk.

In fact, about 10% of the people in the control group

turned out to be abusive in some way—

compared to 18% of people who were abused as children,

and 37% of people who were abused as adolescents.

Now, the risk could also change if someone was a victim of abuse,

or if they just witnessed it.

An earlier study in 1984, published in the Journal of Marriage and Family,

looked at factors that might predict violent behavior in more than 2000 adults.

And the researchers found that observing domestic violence between parents

tended to more accurately predict violent behavior

than being physically abused.

So why do these patterns exist?

Probably one of the most important ways is because

we learn behaviors that are modeled by our parents or caregivers,

including harmful ones.

This is called vicarious learning, and was famously studied by Albert Bandura

using inflatable clown toys, called Bobo dolls.

If kids watched adults hit and throw a Bobo doll,

they were more likely to be violent to the toy too.

So if kids see parents using violence to get what they want,

whether it's spanking a child or hitting a partner,

they might learn to deal with their conflicts with violence too.

But there's also a lot of variation among kids—

some pick up modeled aggression more readily than others.

And as children grow up, they'll have other models and can learn from them, too.

Plus, people can make choices about how they behave,

so they won't necessarily resort to violence,

and can break away from unhealthy patterns.

But part of the reason these patterns exist might also be genetic.

Researchers find that people's self-reports of aggressive behaviors

can be partially explained by their genes.

But genetics actually aren't that simple.

How much influence your genes have

can depend on what your environment is like.

When it comes to psychological disorders,

this is called the diathesis-stress model.

It's the idea that even though people might carry a genetic risk for some problem,

it would take some kind of major life stress to trigger it.

Usually we think of stress coming from things like

relationship drama or problems at work.

But research has also found that significant stress

can be caused by systemic conditions like poverty—

for instance, if you feel unsafe, or if there's poor-quality housing

and very few resources like stores or buses.

These kinds of environmental stresses have been linked

to mental health issues that have a genetic component,

like clinical depression.

And there's some specific evidence for the diathesis-stress model

when it comes to abusive behavior.

For example, a 2002 study published in Science

looked at data from just over 1000 people who carried a gene

that codes for an enzyme called monoamine oxidase A, or MAO-A.

When this gene is working, the enzyme helps break down

different neurotransmitters like norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine.

These chemicals are involved in a lot of brain processes,

potentially including how stressful experiences affect long-term behavior.

A lower-activity version of the MAOA gene—

meaning less enzyme gets made—

has been linked in some studies with a higher risk

of displaying violent or antisocial behaviors.

But in this analysis, the researchers found that people with

a lower-activity version of the MAOA gene had a higher risk

specifically if they had been mistreated as children.

People with that version of the gene who weren't mistreated

had a comparatively lower risk.

So the gene seems to be influenced by stress in some way.

It's not straightforward.

But even though genetics might play a role,

it doesn't mean abusive behavior is inevitable.

An important way to break the cycle of violence

is through help from professionals.

Several therapies that teach adults skills to help them interact with children

have been shown to reduce the chance of abusive behaviors

in people who are at risk of showing them.

One 2007 study published in the journal Child Abuse & Neglect

looked at people who received a treatment program

focusing on interpersonal and relationship skills.

These people had lower rates of partner violence than an at-risk control group—

measured at a check-in 16 years after the program ended.

So, unfortunately, abuse is a distressing example

of how we can learn harmful behavior from our parents.

But nothing is set in stone.

Through more research, therapy, and more people being conscious of risks

and seeking help, psychologists are working to improve lives.

And, in the end, you get to choose who you are and what you do.

Thanks for watching this episode of SciShow Psych.

and potentially harmful relationships,

5th Sunday of Lent — Rev. Michael Weibley, O.P. - Duration: 5:20.

Hello my name is Father Michael Weibley. I'm one of the assistant chaplains

here at Providence College, and it's my joy and pleasure to speak to you today

about the fifth Sunday in Lent this upcoming gospel passage and it's a very

interesting passage it begins with a group of Greeks coming to one of the

disciples of Jesus one of the Apostles Philip and saying to him sir we would

like to see Jesus a simple request men who have come from a far distance heard

something about Christ his teachings his life who he is and they simply want to

see him so they go to the Apostle Philip and he goes to Andrew and both Philip

and Andrew go to Jesus and say there are these men who would like to see you and

what is an incredibly interesting dialogue takes place and Jesus says to

them amen amen I say to you unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and

dies it remains just a grain of wheat it's an interesting and odd response to

a seemingly simple request we'd love to see you Jesus these men want to see you

and Jesus responds telling them about a seed falling to the earth and dying and

only in its dying does it produce life it's strange and brothers and sisters as

we come to this passage it helps us to reflect a little bit upon that request

that these Greeks had we want to see Jesus in all of us we have this simple

desire we want to see Jesus but so often the Jesus we want to see is the Jesus

we've created in our imaginations the Jesus who fits our own personality the

Jesus who seems to make everything smooth and easy in joy filled and happy

in every moment for us and it's this Jesus that we often cling to and it's

this Jesus in our minds that we don't allow ourselves to be

opened to what he actually wants to do for us a simple story I think can

illustrate this point of a friend of mine who's a priest and for many years

he was a high school chaplain in a high school religious teacher and he loved it

he loved his time in the high school it was a great ministry for him and he

would often say that in those years as a high school chaplain it's when Jesus got

everything right for him his ministry was flourishing he enjoyed his time

there it was very peaceful and he often would talk about you know looking

forward to the ways in which Jesus would continue to work through his ministry as

a chaplain and reflecting back upon this he would always emphasize how the focus

was always upon himself my ministry my work my life but then one day shortly

before school year was supposed to begin he was called to do something different

he was asked to leave this chaplaincy in high school and take up a new job as a

pastor of a struggling parish in a completely different setting to be

ripped from this seemingly great and wonderful ministry into something

totally different challenging and very much difficult

through this death to this high school ministry that he had however came a

certain flourishing and freedom it was only giving over to what Christ wanted

in his life was he then able to flourish in freedom to what Jesus really wanted

for him brothers and sisters we are so much like this I know I am so often we

cling to who Christ is we cling to something safe but yet what Jesus often

tells us in the Gospels in order to be a disciple we must pick up our cross and

follow him daily each of us has those crosses

and that's why Jesus's response to the request for people to see him makes so

much sense because in order to really see Christ not the Christ of our

imagination not the Christ that we make up for our lives not simply just the

Christ that we want to have but the Christ who is really the Son of God the

crucified Lord the risen Lord we must become that grain of wheat we must allow

ourselves to die to be challenged to have a certain death to self because

only in that is fruitfulness only that is life and that is why the response of

Jesus in this gospel makes so much sense may God bless you

Author Steven K. Smith Visits LCS - Duration: 2:03.

It just says, "In the long hot summers of central Virginia, the trees danced at night"

When you bring an author into a school, it makes the children realize there's a

person behind that name, and when they get to see that person and talk to that

person and ask them questions about the book that they've just read, it just adds

so much more to the books.

The Virginia Mysteries series is a series of middle

grade books which mixes together action and adventure and mystery and it's tied

around different places around Virginia.

Having some of that local appeal to say,

oh this is some place that maybe I went on a class trip or I've heard about or

maybe my family or my friends can go visit there over the summer makes it

kind of an extra special thing for them to be able to see that this is something

I recognized or that I know I can go see.

By having this author come in we're

supporting the social studies SOLs, we're supporting the reading SOLs, the English

Language SOLs, as well.

If it wasn't for the Lynchburg Education Foundation

we probably wouldn't be able to have this event, because they allow us to put

grants together and request for those special events that we know would

enhance the curriculum, but we may not have enough funds for in our regular

budgets. So I put in a request with the media specialist at Perrymont

Elementary School to have him come and visit both of our schools. They also

provided books so that we've been able to read books to the children, they've

been able to do them in their classrooms, and without the Education Foundation,

it just wouldn't be possible.

I've already had some good feedback from different

schools of kids through really getting into, "Oh we're gonna go write a short

story together," or "I want to write a book someday," which is really fun to hear.

Find something that does get them excited and get them into reading,

because it's something that obviously they're going to need to do down the

road, and it can really help them with their development and their fun for

reading. Kind of awaken that imagination and wonder, which is which is a big part

of being a kid and certainly something that I enjoy.

Porsche Mission E : Is this the Tesla killer? - Duration: 4:45.

So, this may be the Tesla Killer....

Whats up you beautiful people.

Thank you tuning into my channel.

If you are new to the channel, consider subscribing.

Unless you have been living under a rock like me, you should be aware there has been a big shift towards electric cars.

After Elon Musk from Tesla has successfully launched their Model 3 and proved

to the world that the electric car is here to stay.

With the latest model coming from Jaguar as I-pace to compete with Tesla's future Y-model.

Porsche is the last to enter this race with their mission E model car, which is set to launch next year

Porsche has stated this will compete with Tesla's model S, with a price around $89K

USD it is pretty competitively priced with Tesla.

Porsche said it will have repetitive performance

Porsche claims the Mission E will pass 60 MPH is less than 3.5 secs and will have a

top speed of 155mph.

It will have a dual motor layout to deliver 4WD.

With their new 800W tech, porsche claims you can charge your car to 80% in 15mins.

With their entry level 350KW battery you should get a range of 500km.

Porsche has also claimed the prototype has been tested in bitter -20c chill in Sweden

to ensure the battery cell don't collapse in extreme temperature.

From what we have seen so far of the concept model, Mission E is absolutely gorgeous.

It has classic Porsche beauty, which I feel a lot of the other car manufactures are

failing to add their electric models.

The interior looks like something out of a sci-fi movie and screams that you have arrived

Whether all the features will be available in final production, that still leaves to be seen.

I have added a link below for you to see the Porsche Mission E commercial

So what do you think about the Mission E?

Do you think it is a Tesla Killer?
