Get to know Performing Arts at CSU Channel Islands - Duration: 3:57.

[ Music ]

The performing arts program at CI is magnificent

and it is unique in that it is not a separate dance program,

music program, and theater program, but we are all housed

under the same program.

It's integrated and we get to work with each other.

We have a lot of opportunity to put a project together

and work together, so I think that's very unique.

I think it's about how we view the students

as an artist and a person.

We have a very small student to teacher ratio,

so we are truly able to personalize our approach

with the students and guide them toward achieving their

individual goals.

>> Our faculty is really amazing here in performing arts.

I look forward to when I have a chance to jam with someone

in music or create a performance with someone in theater

and show the students a good example

of a collaborative working relationship.

I choose to major in performing arts

because I've always had a passion for singing and dancing.

I've always loved music and I wanted to continue

that passion into college.

I believe it's my passion to entertain people in life

and it's something that I truly love.

I like most about my program probably our small class sizes.

We all know our professors on a first-name basis

and any time we need a little extra help we can always

approach them with a phone call, with office hours,

and we can get any of the help or tutoring we need.

I saw the website for the performing arts program

and I looked at the dance catalogue and I decided

to have a change of heart and I switched my major.

All the classes that they offer conditioning for dancers,

dance history, jazz, modern, they were all the things

that I wanted to learn.

As a music major I feel like I really like having access

to a recording studio here on campus.

It's kind of our best-kept secret.

Performance careers aren't always guaranteed, so it's great

to be in production as well.

One of my favorite unique classes that I've taken

in our program was definitely teaching theater to children.

It's a really amazing class especially if you plan

on teaching later in life which I plan on using for my degree.

They teach you the material and then you have to figure

out a way to convey that to the kids in a way

that they can pay attention and appreciate and enjoy.

It's really fun.

[ Music ]

Our graduates have gone on to some fascinating

and successful careers.

We have a number of students who are working

in regional theaters from, right now, a production

of "Young Frankenstein" the musical, to "Magic To Do"

which is the new musical by the creator

of "Wicked", Stephen Schwartz.

We have a an alumnus that she just contacted me

and she said she just opened a music studio in New York

where she is the owner and we have students

that are still going through our program already teaching a local

elementary and high school classes or private lessons.

And while they're coming to school here as a student,

they also go out to teach already

and I think that's a great experience.

A performing arts degree helps students prepare

for a career in other fields as well.

Jobs are not solo gigs anymore

and what a performing arts degree gives students is what

all employers are looking for these days.

Knowing how to work with other people, collaborating

on projects, and working within a team to get the job done.

How to Develop Relationships with Pro Soccer Coaches, Scouts, Players, and Agents - Duration: 6:05.

What's up guys and welcome back to another episode of footballers advice in today's video

I wanted to go over a question that one of our subscribers had on how to actually develop closer

personal relationships to professional coaches Scouts players and agents outside of your soccer performance

I think this was a really good question to ask and something I wanted to talk about

Because it relates to other videos that I've made in the past about the importance of networking as you guys already know from watching this

Channel I reiterate the importance of creating and establishing relationships within the soccer industry

This is because when you need to tap into this network later on it can help open doors for you to play professionally

But how do you create these relationships that are deeper than just a symbiotic relationship?

to illustrate this symbiotic

relationship you as a player are establishing and creating relationships with agents because you know they have connections to

Professional soccer teams that may be interested in signing you and then agents also creating and establishing

Relationships with you as a player because they know that based on their professional connections

They may be able to make money off you if they're able to sign you with one of those

professional teams both parties benefit from creating and establishing these

Relationships because they both can receive a financial gain from it however when you connect and create these

relationships with other people in my opinion

It's more important to create these relationships on a deeper and more personal level beyond just soccer

So how do you do this well first is that creating relationships takes time no relationship worth having happens

Just overnight if you take for instance in this example

A club coach that you have played for in the past it probably took a whole season

For both of you to get to know one another better after having multiple interactions with them

You learn more and more about them, as time passes and then six months from then or even longer

You're able to establish more of a mutual relationship together now to what extent that relationship covers depends on what information

Bowl team you share with one another for instance in the example of your club coach

Maybe over a season you got to know them better

And they talk about their background and where they're from they may talk about what college they went to or how they got into coaching

You may even find out more about

their kids or their spouse or what they like doing

outside of playing soccer all of this allows you to establish a more personal connection and relationship with that person

Relating to one another also helps establish that connection

Maybe both of you went to the same high school or college

Or you're from the same city or town or maybe you both went through similar life experiences

All of this can help develop that mutual relationship between one another so to tie all of this back together

And how it relates to developing more personal and closer connections to professional coaches

Scouts players and agents is that you need to find mutual interests

or shared

experiences with each other

That way you can connect with them on a more personal level if it's a professional soccer player that you're talking with

Maybe both of you know a mutual friend or went to the same college or from the same city or town if it's a professional

coach or Scout

maybe both of you know a mutual friend within the soccer industry whether it's been a coach that they've worked with before if it's a

professional agent maybe both of you know a mutual player that they've represented before or at least know about

Anything that you can connect with them about or talk with them about later on helps facilitate and engage that conversation

And all this pretty much means

The more you talk with each other the better the relationship will be to give a more personal example of this when I was in

Sweden I was able to connect with two Scouts that were in Stockholm the first scout was actually a first-tier Swedish scout and the

second was an individual responsible for scouting the

Scandinavian region for other first tier teams in Europe when I met the second Scout it turns out after having multiple

Conversations with them that we actually attended the same college and with the second Scout after having multiple conversations with him

I was able to eventually meet his wife when they watched one of my soccer games

And then when my family came into Sweden

He was able to show them around Stockholm, and also had lunch with us

So now when we talk we don't only just talk about soccer

But I also ask how his family is doing and things like that so what I would recommend doing when you meet a professional coach

Scout agent, or player is find ways to connect with them beyond just your performance on the soccer field

Maybe you know someone in common or maybe you'll have lunch with them

And you're able to to connect with them over a bite to eat you never know and there's no

straightforward answer on how to actually develop these personal relationships, but

Just like the example of you playing for your new coach, it takes time to develop these relationships

Beyond just your performance on the field the best thing you can do is talk with people the more you talk with people

The more they get to know you and the more you're able to find mutual

experiences or common ground with that person to relate with them from there build upon getting to know them better and stay in touch as

You keep them up to date on not only your soccer career, but also things that are happening in your personal life

They will be able to help you out later on when you need it

whether it be asking a coach or an agent to be a reference on your resume for a professional soccer team or

asking them for any

Connections that they may have to get you a professional trial all of these things revolve around you taking the initiative to get to know

That person and build a relationship from there

So I hope that helped you guys with how you should approach

Networking and how to connect with people within the soccer industry make sure to build

Relationships beyond the purpose of gaining contacts in order to help you out build relationships that are meaningful when you build meaningful relationships

People are more willing to help you out, but as always guys

Thank you again for watching another episode of footballers advice

Don't forget to also subscribe and also leave a comment down below on what you think is essential in order to build relationships

I'd love to hear them and read about them, and I'll see you guys in the next video. Thank you!

How Intergalactic Particles Are Attacking Your Laptop - Duration: 6:28.

SciShow is supported by Brilliant.org.

[♪ INTRO ]

In the early 1980s, IBM engineers had a problem.

In most of the US, when a computer's memory module failed, a few tests would make it clear

what was wrong.

But in Denver, Colorado, 80% of failures were inexplicable.

Every test would show the modules working perfectly.

When IBM finally cracked the puzzle, the cause turned out to be otherworldly.

And I am not saying it's aliens because it wasn't aliens, it was cosmic rays.

These intergalactic visitors can wreak havoc on electronics, and they're playing an ever-greater

role in how computers are designed.

A cosmic ray is actually a tiny particle, usually a hydrogen or helium nucleus.

And they get flung toward us at up to 99% of the speed of light by a far-away supernova

or some other astronomical mayhem.

Scientists had known since the 1950s that radiation made electronics go haywire, whether

the high-energy particles came from the Sun or atomic bombs.

And spacecraft had been dealing with cosmic radiation for decades.

But down on Earth, everyone had thought we were protected by the atmosphere.

And it's true that the atmosphere protects us from direct hits.

But cosmic rays are packed with energy.

***So when one smacks into an air molecule, it doesn't just disappear.

Instead, the collision spews out a zoo of other particles called secondary rays, each

carrying just a bit of the energy—but still enough to come out moving fast.

Most of these secondary rays get absorbed or deflected by other air molecules.

But every so often, one makes it all the way down to the ground.

And you know what else hangs out on the ground?

Computers.

Inside of your computer, electrons are flowing around—there're the physical embodiment

of your emails, software, and Netflix streams.

Many of the electrons park in your computer's memory—the RAM chip.

They're moving in and out of microscopic electrical reservoirs to store 1's and 0's,

or bits,

Now, a stray neutron from that secondary ray shower might crash into the nucleus of a silicon

atom in the RAM, passing on a jolt of energy that tears apart that nucleus.

It's a tiny nuclear fission reaction, the same thing that's happening in a nuclear

reactor!

And as positively-charged fragments of the nucleus zoom through the chip, they yank around

negatively-charged electrons.

And sometimes, a few thousand electrons get dragged into or out of a reservoir in the

RAM.

When that happens, a 1 becomes a 0 , or vice versa.

And the cosmic ray has corrupted the contents of the computer's memory.

Scientists call this a single-event upset, or SEU.

"Single event" just means there's no lasting damage to the chip.

So if you test the memory afterwards, everything's A-OK.

It's what people call a "soft error."

Even though secondary rays are everywhere, the higher up you are, the more neutrons reach

you, since they've had fewer chances to collide with air molecules.

And that's why computers in Denver, the mile-high city, were having extra temporary

memory failures.

Mystery solved.

Aside from the occasional blue screen of death, most SEUs don't cause noticeable problems.

After all, who cares if one pixel in Game of Thrones is off?

But every so often, things have gotten more dramatic.

In 2003, a voting machine in Schaerbeek, Belgium added 4,096 votes to one candidate's total

because of a single flipped bit.

And in 2008, a Qantas passenger jet suddenly nose-dived hundreds of feet in 20 seconds,

sending passengers crashing into the ceiling.

It's hard to say for sure, but the most likely explanation in both cases is cosmic rays.

Because of the need to guard against high-altitude incidents like the Qantas flight, the aerospace

industry has done a lot of the research on protecting electronics against radiation.

And devices with lots of memory or that work continuously for days need some extra protection

too, like supercomputers, server farms, even networking equipment.

But as technology advances, SEUs are a growing problem even for things like cell phones,

computerized car engines, and smart doorbells.

And circuits keep getting smaller, making it easier to flip a bit.

At the same time, we keep packing in more transistors, the key silicon component in

RAM and other electronics, giving more targets for particles to disrupt.

So engineers have come up with three main lines of defense.

First, by changing the spacing of the transistor components to limit how much charge can move

around, they can minimize the chance of errors.

The second strategy is to detect and reverse errors right in the RAM.

Error checking and correcting RAM, or ECC RAM keeps tabs on how many 1s there should

be in each block of memory, which allows the chip to locate the error and flip it back.

ECC RAM is widely used in data centers, and you can get it for home computers, too.

And finally, you can just accept that errors are going to happen and try to work around

them.

The extreme version of this, used in spacecraft and planes, is to run multiple identical circuits

at the same time and restart any calculation when their results don't match.

But you can also just have software stay on the lookout for fishy-looking data or tolerate

some imprecision.

Each solution has its cost, whether in power, size, speed, or money.

But sometimes it's worth it, especially if the electronics are keeping people alive.

And as we keep using more, smaller electronics, we have to pay more attention to fending off

these cosmic rays that are slamming into our planet from across the universe.

As we're well aware at SciShow, humans are skilled at building things to survive pretty

much any environment.

Whether it's protecting our electronics against cosmic radiation or protecting 100-story

skyscrapers from earthquakes, there's a lot of math and physics involved in maintaining

our way of life.

SciShow's sponsor Brilliant.org teaches you to think like a scientist with dozens

of interactive quizzes.

And since high-altitude is the theme of the day, I thought we could try this Skyscrapers

quiz together.

[Go to b-roll of this quiz: https://brilliant.org/practice/skyscrapers/?chapter=infrastructure.]

So we're going into the last part of the infrastructure course which is about the skyscrapers.

So preparing you think about skyscrapers, it's having you think about stacking up

bunch of books and whether will become more or less stable.

So I think it becomes less stable, and got it!

And then we get to the question where we're trying to figure out how the wind speed is

going to be affected by these multiple tall buildings next to each other.

And there is a previous question that asks you about placing your thumb over the end

of the hose and how that affects the water, and in that case when you're blocking a

part of the flow, the water speeds up.

So in this case, the building is blocking a part of the flow, so I think that the wind

is going to speed up, and I got it!

And towards the end of the quiz there is a little video in here of skyscrapers actually

swing back and forth in the wind, and it's teaching you about how engineers can use large

tanks of water to actually counteract the weight of that swinging.

Which I think that's pretty cool.

So if you wanna check it out yourself and help support SciShow, the first 77 viewers

to sign up over at brilliant.org/scishow will get 20% off their annual premium subscription.

Jason Aldean Announces Hootie and the Blowfish's One-Night Reunion Show | Billboard News - Duration: 1:24.

90's kids rejoice! If you grew up listening to 'Cracked Rear View'

over and over again on your Sony Walkman, I have some great news for you.

Hootie & the Blowfish are reuniting this summer in a one-night-only event!

The Darius Rucker-led band will get back together July 21 in Atlanta, Georgia

at the Atlanta Braves stadium along with headliner

Jason Aldean for a very special tour stop.

Rucker has made a name for himself as a solo artist in the world of

country music since leaving his Blowfish buddies and still performs some

Hootie hits as part of his concert sets to this day but it's been quite

some time since he reunited with the band that produced such 90's

classics as "Hold My Hand," "Let Her Cry," and "Only Wanna Be With You."

Speaking about the special event, Aldean said…

"Out of all the shows we've played, I know this show is going to be a

career defining moment. We haven't had a chance to play Atlanta

in a couple years in anticipation of this show and I

know this night is going to mean a lot to my family and me."

The stop is part of Aldean's High Neon Tour which is in support of

his upcoming album 'Rearview Town' that is set to drop April 13.

So will you be heading to the High Neon tour this summer?

Let me know down in the comments

and until next time, for Billboard News, I'm Kevan Kenney.

THIS Is How She Wants You To TEXT HER | A Girl's Advice On What To Text A Girl & Get A Date - Duration: 10:51.

Nicole: Something that all girls can agree on is the first few texts a guy sends her will

make or break her decision about whether she wants to see him again. So guys, this

is really important! You have to make these count. You can't just go

BS'ing your way through this text thing and expect to get a good response.

So I'm gonna show you a few examples of big texting fails to help you so you

don't make the same mistakes. Hi it's Nicole with The Attractive Man team, and

in today's video, I'm gonna reveal to you how a girl actually wants you to text

her and ask her out after you've gotten her number. I'm gonna cover the do's and

don'ts of those first few texts you send a girl, so you can make sure you don't

send her running away and can get a date fast. To do this, I'm going to show you

some text that I've received in real life, and break them down for you based

on the good and the bad. And then at our end of this video, I'm gonna tell you the

number one way to ensure that you get the date that you want, so make sure you

stick around for that. Okay, so the first types of texts you're

gonna want to avoid are the drunken late night text. Or the meaningless text. Now

these can be one in the same sometimes, or they can be separate. But the example

I'm going to show you is a guy who managed to combine them both. I'll let

you read that real quick. So you'll know the timestamp of this, it was 4:00

in the morning that I received the letter M and an emoji. What does this

mean?! I have no idea. This was a waste of my

time, and it woke me up. So this was not endearing, and needless to say I did not

text him back. You're gonna want to avoid drunk text, beginning of a texting

conversation with a girl because it's gonna make you seem like you don't have

self-control. And like, you may be a little immature. And also, a meaningless

text is going to be a waste of your time and hers. If you're trying to gain her

attention, and you send her something that she doesn't understand, or means

absolutely nothing to her, she's gonna move on. Just avoid these. There's no

reason for them. Alright, so the second type of text you're going to want to avoid is

the kind that's gonna get you screenshotted, and destroyed in a group

text with her friends. This can include anything from really bad grammar and

spelling, to excessive emoji or meme usage. Unless you're 12 that's not okay.

It can also include inappropriate text, or unsolicited pictures. I should hope that

you know you shouldn't send those things, but I still have to say it just to make

sure. If your first text to a girl includes a bunch of spelling mistakes, or

a bunch of emojis, it doesn't matter if you've just told her she's the most

beautiful human you've ever seen in your life.

She's probably gonna think you're an idiot. That might be harsh, but it's true.

There's just no reason for it. And if you're sending an inappropriate message,

even if you spend a lot of time with this girl it's just gonna kind of give

the wrong vibe. You may come across as creepy... You just want to avoid this.

There's no reason for it. So I'm actually gonna show you an example of that- Mesage: "If you

ever are bored and want to send some pics I'm your guy though winky face haha"

Nicole: A little background on this is that I met this guy the night before and we had

a great time together. We kind of flirted, we spent like five hours together,

actually. It was a good encounter. And the next day he asked if I could hang out,

and I couldn't. So that was his response. To just asked for pictures. I had a good

time with him prior to this, but that really gave me a creepy vibe. It wasn't

cool. I just met him yesterday. I don't know why he expected that this was okay,

you just want to avoid messages like this. It's not a good idea.

Following this text, which I will not include for the internet because I think

there's a lot of rules against that, but he sent just a picture of his naked

torso. And while it was a decent torso, I was completely turned off at this point.

It's just not okay, I didn't ask for that. Just avoid these kinds of texts

at all costs. Okay, so the third and final texting don't I'm going to share with

you is actually one of the biggest and most common mistakes that guys make

while texting. It's the non-committal text. If you want to see the biggest

collective eye roll from a group of girls,

ask them how they feel about the "We should hang out sometime!" text. This

basically translates to, "I'm gonna make as little effort as possible to ever see

you again!" and isn't going to lead to a date unless

the girl is desperate, in which case, hey you might get lucky, and good luck. Really,

guys sometimes seem to have this idea in their head that if they set a date and

time, then its suddenly something serious. But no girl thinks this way. They're just

gonna be thankful that you actually could make a decision. Because a lot of

guys can't seem to for some, whatever reason. I don't know why. Let's face it,

there is always the chance that a girl just gave you her number to be nice. This

happens from time to time, there's reasons why, I'm not sure. But if you are

straightforward with your intentions - I'm going to see this girl again -

you're gonna weed out these wishy-washy people who are probably just gonna flake

on you anyway. And that way, you are not wasting your own time, and you're not

wasting theirs. By the way, if you haven't yet, go ahead and click that subscribe

move on to the types of texts you should send a girl to make you stand out. These

are really gonna help set you apart from anyone else she may be talking to, and

help you get a date. Now the first kind of text you should definitely, always

include in those first few texting exchanges, is a unique compliment. Now

don't get me wrong, girls love compliments. You can tell her

she's pretty, you can tell her she's nice, you can say any great thing. But a lot of

times they can come off as a little cookie cutter... Like something you could

say to anybody. So if you can put in a unique compliment that really lets her

know that you paid attention to her, this is going to make you stand so high above

anyone else she's talking to. This can be anything.

I mean think about if you had a conversation before you got her number,

or something about her appearance. Just something very specific to that girl,

it's really going to be so endearing. I'm gonna show you a kind of funny example

of that really quickly I'll let you read that - Message: "It was great meeting you

yesterday. By the way you have the cutest sneeze" Nicole: so to explain this text, I met

this guy and we were having kind of a quick conversation, maybe 5 or 10 minutes.

It was going pretty well and then I got the worst allergy attack. I'm telling you

I probably sneezed 20 times in 30 seconds. It was really embarrassing and I

thought for sure I blew it. I mean I could not stop, like, we had to end the

conversation because I was just like a red-eyed, puffy, just the whole thing. It

was awful! So when I got this text from him the

next day, I was so relieved and it was so sweet that he kind of let me know that

he didn't care, that I looked like a crazy person, because no one is cute when

they sneeze. Unless you were a baby panda. I mean come on, seriously

it just wasn't cute, but this was really endearing. If you can pull something like

that from a conversation, or anything about this girl, she's gonna know that

you paid attention to something other than her boobs during the conversation,

and it's really gonna get you a long way. Okay, so the next thing that you should

do in every text or conversation is something I wish I could tell every

single guy. You have to make actual plans to see the girl. Make actual plans for a

date. Or if you happen to leave your balls at home that day, and you can't

call it a date, you still have to make plans. Let me show you a quick example of

a guy who did a really good job just sending up a casual date with me.

Message: "Drinks tomorrow night or early evening Friday. Let's say at Valentino's?" Nicole: So this

was great. Meeting for drinks - very straightforward

he gave me a couple of date options, so I can fit into my schedule, he even picked

a place that was close to where I lived on my side of town so it showed me that

he was listening to our conversation. Girls just want a guy who

confident and sure of himself and able to make decisions. If you can set a day

in time to meet her, you're already gonna be 10 steps above half the guy she

probably talks to on Tinder, or Bumble, or whatever the youths use these days, I

don't know. But seriously, just make plans with the girl. It's not that hard. It's

really gonna set you apart. And if you make the plans, this really opens it up

so that you are comfortable with the situation, you can pick a place that you

like, that you have been to before. So you're not completely thrown out of your

element, and you can really be your best self when you're on this date. Alright,

so I've covered a few of things that you can do to really make yourself stand out.

But now I'm gonna share with you the number one way to make sure you can get

a date. You're really gonna stand out with this. I showed you a couple of

examples of guys who seemingly did everything right, with texting, good

compliments, setting up dates, things like that. But they actually lost out to the

one guy... The one, one.... Who had the balls to actually call me. Yes, that's right. He

picked up his phone and used it as it was intended, and called me. This was so

shocking to me, I almost dropped my phone. I'm not even kidding you, this is so rare

that this happens, which is why it was this a surprise. Now, this conversation was

not long. It was actually quick and straight to the point. He just said, "Hey

it was really great to meet you this week, I would like to take you out this

week. Are you free?" and of course I said yes. We set a time, that's not important.

All of that. But this really displayed a level of confidence and courage that no

guy I had talked to ever did. This was really impressive to me, and it's kind of

nerve-wracking to be called, honestly. It really puts you on the spot, you have to

be quick with your thoughts and feelings, and ideas, and all this. It really is

nerve-wracking. But even if you hate talking on the phone, or she hates

talking on the phone, this is going to really make you stand out. It's gonna

seem like you have your shit together even if you don't. It's okay if she

doesn't answer. She may not... Maybe she's busy, it doesn't mean she's not

interested and it's totally fine to leave a text afterwards and just tell

her, "Hey, I was giving you a call to see if you wanted to hang out this week, or

see if I could take you out this week, or any number of things to kind of get that

flirting going. But calling a girl is absolutely the number one way that's

going to make you stand out above anyone else she may talk to. Getting a girl's

number it's just the first step, so I really hope you follow these tips and

tricks, and use them and go get yourself an awesome date. And if you want to know
