Hello and welcome on Garage Makezone!
Our channel recently has been dominated by lasers.
But it's all because of your interest in this topic.
So today, we're attaching the laser onto the Ender3! Enjoy!
Installing the laser module on the Ender 3 is not an easy job.
Because most of the lasers you can get on Chinese market
are operated by 12V, and Ender 3 works on 24V.
But!
Someone went above and beyond
and created the laser module for CR-10.
Motherboard is the same in CR-10 and in Ender 3.
So the laser module must fit.
Following that path, I imported the module to Poland.
To start it up it took me 10 minutes.
But, unfortunately, it turned out that some things needed to be changed or fixed,
as it usually is when you order from China.
Because for example the laser module couldn't be turned off as it is operated by printers fan signal.
So if you wanted to 3D print something and have the laser hooked up constantly...
...the laser would turn on with the fan. That's why I added a simple switch so the laser can be turned off.
I'll show you all that in just a second in the video. How to install? How to start?
And what's the most important thing...
Thanks to VERY, VERY fast work from Damian, our teams Software developer.
We have for you already the software which prepares amazing G-code files
to use with this 3D Printer. All that is in the package,
in the link in the description :)
First that has to be said, this laser isn't a speed demon.
It's not the same laser, with the specs of the laser we presented last time with "Kępa Marzeń"
and not the same as we presented with Root 3 machine.
It's not the same, in here we have 500mW of power.
So 0.5W
Of course you can engrave with this laser, but speeds you'll have to work with...
...won't be demonic.
And you'll have to show some patience.
The kit generally comes in such a box.
In the kit you get:
- Laser head with wires
- Power cable
- Very important thing, safety glasses
And a few pieces of plywood, on which we can test, engrave.
I have one laser module already installed on my Ender 3.
And this is the modification I made.
This is where you turn the laser off and on.
Generally if we turn the printer on and laser is turned on then
that laser would turn on for a second.
That's why you don't want to leave this laser as it is.
And if you wanted to constantly change out wires for laser and printers fan, that would be terrible...
So I had to do something about it.
That why I made a wire that gives power both to laser and fan...
...and that switch on the side of the printer, turns the laser off if needed.
Let's see, if I turn on the printer, laser will turn of for a second
Then the firmware initializes.
Did you see that?
Laser turned on for more than a second.
That leaves a black dot on the plywood.
but if a moment we can have a hole.
Even if the laser was in a "resting" position, attached on the side here.
Then it can shoot either into you, someone else in the room or who knows where.
Quite a dangerous option. That's why I made this switch here.
Now I can safely cut off power to the laser and
turn the printer once again with laser not turning on, shooting anywhere.
Such a simple modification, but very usefull and it let's you leave the laser mounted all the time.
Let's get to the point.
In a second on the video you'll get to see how to install all this on the printer.
This laser doesn't require any special firmware modifications
I have installed Marlin on my printer, but it will work on stock firmware as well.
1. Remove the cover.
2. Unpin the fan connector.
3. Connect the "Y" cable.
4. Install the cover.
5. Mount the laser head. It its equiped with neodymium magnets.
6. Test.
Testing the laser. 1. Enter menu: - Settings->Temperature->FanSpeed
2. Set value to 1.
3. Press the encoder to confirm.
Do it once again and change the value to 0 and the laser will be turned off.
It took only a couple of minutes to have a working laser mounted on your 3D printer.
It doesn't require any firmware changes.
One thing I wanted to mention.
Please, PROTECT YOUR EYES!
There are green protective glasses included in the kit.
They are said to filter out 405nM but in my opinion this filtration isn't as good, it's too weak.
With this pair you can set the laser up, you can focus the beam,
but if you want to watch the laser working on the material for a bit longer...
Then I recommend you red glasses. They filter out much more.
So even after longer times (>15min)
of watching the laser (the focus point on material, DONT EVER LOOK STRAIGHT INTO THE LASER!)
you don't fell it as much.
It happened to me that after working in green glasses, after a couple of tries, my eyes would hurt.
It is a similar effect you have when soldering.
Someone nearby is welding, you glanced and your eyes could hurt.
This is a similar effect after working in extended periods of time.
It never happened to me when wearing those red glasses.
That's why I recommend you to buy the red pair for a couple of dollars.
Link for those will be in the description as well.
Even the most refined laser is worth as much as the software that operates it.
That's why we prepared, in our opinion,
a package with the best free software available on the web right now.
This software is LaserGRBL.
This package you can download from the link in the description, as I mentioned before.
Unpack the file and start the LaserGRBL.exe
This software differs from the original one you can download on the LaserGRBL site,
in such a way, that it has commands that allow to generate the G-Code straight for the 3D printer.
It isn't included in this program originally.
First load the file, then you'll get the preview.
Here you can find some laser options.
I choose "vectorized", that means my image was drawed using vectors and with those vectors the g-code will be made.
Here you can also choose "dotting" and "tracing".
I suggest you try this program for yourself, read the documentation on the project webpage.
As always you can find the link to that page in the description.
Next, I need to choose my vectorisation again.
Then you click Next and the parameters window will show up.
Speed we will set up as 200.
Start laser command: M106
Stop laser: M107 Power parameters we will leave as they are.
Here are options to scale our design/image.
If you'd want to change the size of the image, just type in for example 50
in the width parameter, and the height parameter should adjust automatically.
Press "Create".
That's how we get the code. Dashed line means the travel moves.
Continuous lines mean the working paths.
Export the file.
Save where you want.
You can now close the LaserGRBL.
Now you can start the 3D Printer operating software, RepetierHost.
Connect the printer.
Load the g-code file we created earlier.
Don't be afraid that you can't see anything on the bed.
The visualiser can't understand commands used to operate the laser (as they usually just controll the fan).
Click "Edit G-code".
You can see here how our g-code looks like.
Let's make an assumption that you don't want to start the engraving process in the bottom left corner.
But from the point in which your laser head is set right now (you've set the laser head manually in the place where you want it to start from).
Then we will want to inform 3D printer that it shouldn't home X and Y axis, but start from the point it's at right now.
In this case we will have to write the command that will inform the printer about that.
Click the first line. Press enter and in the first line enter: " G92 X0 Y0 Z0
This command will choose current place as the starting point and engrave from this point.
Go into the tab "Manual control'.
Set the printing speed to minimum.
Then go to "Print preview" and start Print to begin.
Playback x10
We've tried to make the installation, configuration and operating process as simple as possible,
so you wouldn't have to experiment on your own machines.
I hope that with our instruction, the process was simple and easy to follow.
Links to the laser are in the description below.
You can find there links to our shop as well.
Our kit will differ from the chinese one,
in a way that we will include the "Y" cable that we prepared to connect both the fan and laser,
and the switch to turn off the laser while printing.
Thank you very much for watching, see you next time, bye!
ALWAYS REMEMBER TO WEAR PROTECTIVE GLASSES, YOU HAVE ONLY ONE PAIR OF EYES
