hey guys and welcome to another video here on my channel since today I'm going
to be reviewing some handmade watercolor paints from Jasper Stardust
I ordered the gypsy dancer set and a few other colors from his Etsy store as part
of this review I'm going to be doing a swatching out of the colors and I'm
going to be doing a painting demonstration now sadly I lost the
footage of the original unboxing of these paints so I'm going to try and
recreate them as best I can however I can't show you me unwrapping
the paints as I've used them so the clothes at which I got from Jasper
Phoenix red lemon yellow morpho celestial lilac pipes pink rust goldfish
ghost sage Dutch green amber and emerald
these paints varied in how well they moved through water and how they flowed
some paints at granulate some don't some are opaque and some are transparent as a
real mixture most of the colors from Jasper Stardust our fantasy names and
don't contain any pigment information or any clue to what the pigment is and the
paints here are also quite dry one thing I did notice it took a lot of water and
a lot of work to get these paints to reactivate again I did email Jasper
Stardust about this issue and he was very kind enough to replace any paints
but I had a problem with some of the paint is so dry that they were starting
chip and they did chip off the pan some of them this is not usually no more in
handmade watercolors it's not something that I've experienced before however
looking on Instagram I believe he put a post up saying he'd changed his formula
recently and I've seen in the latest video from Mikki from Malamikart that
the consistency of the paint has improved quite a lot so these may be an
older version of the paints and may not be quite fair to what he's making now
however however this is what I have currently and what I will review in this
video
so I'm going to tell you a little bit about the paint from Jasper Stardust and
their philosophy so the mastermind behind this paint brand is a guy called
Rick you can contact him on Etsy if you have any questions or on Instagram I
will leave a link to his Etsy shop down below where you can find these paints if
you like my review so he claims his paints are made using it ain't old 17th
century recipe for paint making and that he uses no metal in the process of
making his paints he believes this improves them and the overall color I
use metal spatulas in the making of my paints and I know other people make used
metal spatulas as well and I've not noticed the difference in quality
personally here on the screen you can see so mixing exercise I did and the
original color chart and you can see there's quite a strange texture to some
of the paints and some of them granulate even if they don't traditionally
granulate from other commercial sources
now I got these paints at last year and I did do a toe light fastness test I
stuck these little swatches on my window for about three months over the British
summer it did get quite sunny so I think it was a fair test and as you can see in
the close-up there are some spots where they have started to fade away nothing
too major so I wouldn't say any of these paints are fugitive
but as with any kind of paint always err on the side of caution and do your own
light fastness tests especially if they do not provide payment information like
these ones are from Jasper Stardust so onto the painting demonstration I've
done a sketch of my hamster Dori the summer has come to an end and she went
on her summer vacation to the Bahamas and it's a bit of a snapshot of her
chilling on the beach with a nice cocktail sunning herself relaxing
I do recommend you take a look at Jasper Stardust s Etsy page even if you don't
have any intention of buying any of these paints it's a bit of a wonder
Emporium for watercolour artists there he has so many different paints
available and in many different sets he makes gemstone paints so from real
gemstones apparently such as lapis lazuli and as I write for example just
to name a few he also makes a hand-carved brushes so he takes tips off
of kolinsky sable brushes attaches them to a hand-carved handle they prices it
for his paints are kind of a little bit more on the pricey end I think this is
the most expensive brand of handmade waters I own however his is not the most
expensive on the market it does also vary between paint the more rarer paint
such as the gemstone paint will be more expensive as to compare to the cheaper
pigmented paint such as like a lemon yellow
it was very clear when I received at this package nearly a year ago back in
December that it was packaged well there was no invoice or anything like a
personal touch but it was packaged nicely and it was wrapped and came in a
little box which was decorated with a bow all the paint's were nicely wrapped
and they were wrapped in aluminum foil and were then had a wrap around them
with the name and a smoker swatch on the wrapper

when working with the actual paints I found it to be a little bit of a mixed
bag some of the colors I really enjoyed using they mix together quite well and
they had quite a nice color to them some of the paints were a little bit more
tricky because they were dry and needed a bit more work and they also granulated
as I said some of them kind of strangely there was a strange texture which made
it interesting in mixes as a mix it kept separating which I did find a little bit
frustrating
unfortunately Rick doesn't list in his Etsy listings if the paint granulates or
not so it's just kind of a bit of a potluck which is a shame because
sometimes you don't want granulating paints and that information would be
useful to have and that separation of climaxes is definitely down to
granulating paints not just the paints in general because not all of the colors
have separated that granulation did throw me a little bit with some of the
paints such as the Morpho which from my experience I would guess is a phthalo
blue moment however there was some granulation and texture in it which
threw me a little bit I don't usually expect that from a fait
no blue color

the reason I got the gypsy dancer set was because the colors in it appealed to
me there was a nice range of clothes there to play with however I did feel it
was missing one or two such as a primary triode so I purchased those as well in
the form of the Morpho lemon yellow and phoenix red the colors of the gypsy
dancer set did work quite well together even though they're eight pounds of
color there are only free color families so hard color harmony wasn't good for
that set and the primary triode just rounded the collection nicely allowed me
to mix some colors which I felt that I needed

personally the clothes I enjoyed most from Jasper Stardust and ones that I'll
be wanting to pay more regularly will be the Dutch screen number the ghosts age
the goldfish and the rust those I particularly enjoyed I thought they were
nice colors and I felt they handled the best they didn't have that unpredictable
texture and regulation and they were the easiest three wet I found that the rust
paint had a slight kind of sparkle to it not quite Sparkle as in Daniels Miss
primatech range or mica pigments but there was a tiny sparkle it is only just
seeable in the finished piece if you tilt it in like a bright light you can't
really notice it on camera or in end the piece as a whole or in mixtures either

I have tried now a couple of handmade watercolor paints the EEM range and the
proofs range and each one has their own unique characteristic and brings
something different to the handmade water scene and Jasper Stardust is no
different there is definitely something unique about these paints
at this point the painting starts to come together a little bit more and I
was getting used to working with these strange watercolor paints if you are
liking it this video at the minute please leave a thumbs up and a small
comment down below it really does help and I appreciate it heavily if you would
like to do more to support myself in this channel please consider check me
out on patreon and over on my Instagram and I also have hammock my own handmade
paints and artwork available on my website or all the links for this will
be down in the description bar below along with any other materials that I've
used in this or that I like and of course there will be the link to the
Jasper Stardust Etsy store and Instagram for you to take a look at if you want to
pick up any of these paints or check out his Instagram page which I do recommend
because on his Instagram page he will often do giveaways or special promotions
quite often they are flash sales or free shipping these can be quite helpful in
reducing the cost of the overall paints

overall I found these paints interesting to work with and some of them were
rather fun Rick does make some very nice colors some that I don't have here but
these ones are quite nice some of them as I mentioned
for me this paint are kind of a mixed bag I still kind of have question mark
over that texture and the strange granulation in the paint's however this
may be a thing of the past as I know he's updated his recipe so for that to
be fair I'd have to buy some new ones to compare to
personally I think these will be great too for journaling playing with
sketching with and scrapbooking with I
do question whether or not I would use these for a finished piece for a
commission or anything as such due to the unreliable lightfastness that may be
a problem if you're going to scan your image in and make prints from it it
should be fine however that unpredictable granulation and texture
would make it a bit challenging to have a complete final work which is
completely smooth and all-around finished for me I think I need to
experiment more with these paints and try a few different ways of working with
them I believe I cannot find a way to make them work and work well in the way
that I want for a finished artwork
at the end of the day I had fun at playing with these paints and I'm glad
that I got a chance to try another handmade friend it's always good to
compare to and to get ideas for my own handmade paint making
how many paints are definitely unique and adds something a little bit more
special to our work they often provide paints and pigments which not many
commercial sources will provide particularly ones such as a gemstone
paint or earth mineral pigment paints
I do recommend try out handmade paints in general usually as well the person
who you contact for any help or advice is a person that's makes them so that's
also handy to have
you
so thanks for checking in and watching this video please consider checking out
some of my other ones it's particularly the ones on how my paints from MA and

subscribing as I would also help this channel so these were the handmade
