Taiwan Travel Tips - Duration: 10:05.

Before visiting Taiwan for the first time, I heard it referred to as the 'heart of Asia'

and thought how lovely that sounded.

What I didn't expect is how this unique country would make its way into my own heart.

I found lots of reasons to love and appreciate Taiwan

and, in this video, I'm going to share some of my top travel tips for visiting.

If you'd like to see more, check out the rest of our Taiwan series

with plenty more videos about where to go,

what to do,

and - very importantly - what to eat.

Let's start with some advice about when to visit Taiwan.

As you've seen in some of our other videos, it can get really, REALLY hot in the summertime.

It's pretty cold, eh?

I'm freezing. -I feel like I should've brought a sweater.

I'm absolutely freezing.

It looks like it.

I'm totally freezing. -Oh yeah.

You know what?

Someone get me a sweater.

We should put a thermal on.

Yeah, for sure.

The average summer temperature is about 30 degrees Celsius, plus humidity.

When we visited, it was much hotter than that, however, that was atypical and record breaking.

I asked lots of locals about when they think is the perfect time to visit

and pretty much everyone said around October to April

when weather is mild to moderately cool, depending on where you are in the country.

The coldest winter temperatures are around 15 degrees.

I personally prefer weather on the cooler side like that, might just be the Canadian in me,

but if you're good with heat and humidity I just wanted to give you fair warning.

Here's something really cool offered at Taoyuan International Airport in Taipei.

If you have a layover that's between 7 and 24 hours long,

you're eligible for a free city tour.

You can reserve these ahead or on site

and I'll link more information about this option in the description box below.

If you're able to stay longer than a stopover in Taiwan

If you're able to stay longer than a stopover in Taiwan then lucky you

and I recommend getting a SIM card at the airport.

There's plenty of free public wifi around Taiwan

but we found the mobile plans were great value.

There are different options but the company we used is called Far EasTone

and they have a Taoyuan airport location outside the baggage claim.

We got a prepaid SIM card with unlimited data for 10 days for 550 Taiwan Dollars.

Speaking of buying things as soon as you arrive at the airport,

I wanted to mention something about currency in Taiwan.

You can pay with credit card sometimes but cash is king

and you'll always want to have some on hand so you don't get stuck.

There are banks at Taoyuan Airport that provide a 24 hour exchange service

so you can either bring some cash from home to exchange or hit up an ATM like we did.

One of the ways to make your money last is taking public transportation.

In Taipei, the subway is known as the MRT

and you can take it straight from the airport into the city.

Tickets are 160 Taiwan Dollars and you can pay with cash at the ticket machines

which also give change.

Ok so Taipei Main Station…

You have to press English.

Taipei Main Station.

And I want for two.

Want for two people.

So I'm going to just put in 400.

You got a girlfriend, money bags?

Take note of which train you get on, by the way,

because there's a faster express that's about 30 minutes

and a commuter that takes more like 50.

There's Commuter and Express and you want to get on the Express 'cause it's a lot faster.

Once you're in Taipei, I think the MRT is the best way to get around.

It's safe, reliable, efficient, and affordable.

The trains run from about 6am to 12 midnight

and there are plenty of easy to use ticket machines.

I'm gonna get our tickets to ride the MRT here in Taipei

and there's, thankfully, an English option.

Let's see..we just want single journey.

We are here so then we know we wanna go down the brown line to here and end up here

so that tells us the price: 20.

So then here I press 20.

That's just for one person

so then we need to press 2 because I need two of them for Marc and I

so now it says 40 Taiwanese Dollars.

And it takes hundred dollar bills so I'm going to put the money in -

oh it's coming out the bottom here.

Once you get your token, you scan it on the sensor to get through the gate

or you can also buy refillable cards instead of buying tokens each time.

As you can see on the map, the price is calculated based on distance

but generally around the city centre you pay 20 Taiwan Dollars.

That's incredibly good value.

Eating and drinking are prohibited on the MRT which keeps it clean and odour-free

and there's also free wifi

and information booths if you need help.

Many stations we saw have escalators and/or elevators as well,

if mobility is an issue for you.

We're racing up this escalator.

It's gonna be close.

Who will win?

There are lines on the ground to show you where to line up to enter the train.

Trains pull in behind glass

and every time I see this safety feature I wonder why it doesn't exist everywhere

because it makes so much sense.

There are lots of signs in English which makes navigating easier

and a lot of the MRT track is elevated above street level

which makes it a great way to get a view of the city as you ride.

Stations often have places to get food - like everyone's favourite boyfriend, Mister Donut -

and some of them even have drugstores.

A drugstore in the subway station?

That's my kind of subway station.

If you're going somewhere further afield from an MRT station,

like the National Palace Museum, for example,

there are also buses to get you there.

And if you're travelling between cities, high speed rail is definitely the way to go.

The trains are comfortable and, in my experience, ran on time.

We just left Taipei.

We're on the high speed train heading south towards Kaohsiung.

If you were to drive it would take five or six hours but this train is only two.

Plus you get this gorgeous view out the window of all the countryside.

Train travel is one of my personal favourites.

There's nothing like gazing out the window as the horizon constantly makes itself over

to lull you into a state of faraway calm.

High speed trains in Taiwan are actually spaces of enforced calm

because there are signs asking you to put electronic devices on silent

and to talk in a low voice as well as designated 'Quiet Areas.'

They have an awesome campaign to remind people about being considerate

where Mr. Lion here demonstrates what not to do

and Ms. Octopus shows us not to spread yourself over too many seats.

There are vending machines built into the train cars

and also a snack cart that makes the rounds with different foods and drinks for sale.

Trains also have breastfeeding areas and free wifi.

I loved travelling by high speed rail around Taiwan.

Not only is it faster and more comfortable than driving,

but it's another chance to see more of the countryside.

And, if you're really lucky, you'll get to take a Hello Kitty train like this.

I also wanted to highlight some of my favourite hotels we stayed at.

First up on the little island of Xiao Liquiu is 7th Living.

This hotel is small, like its home,

with only four rooms -

each of which is named after a different time of day.

Ours was 5:10pm.

On an island this small, you're always within walking distance of the beach and the coastline

and the colours and textures here reflect that softness and proximity to nature.

I love the attention to detail -

even the towels in our room had our initials: E for me and M for Marc.

The common spaces feel like an industrial loft

with mid century modern,

vintage,

and bespoke touches.

The lobby is two stories with super tall shelves

that display all the owners' favourite knick knacks

and outside is a little courtyard and fish pond.

Back on the mainland in the southern part of the country is the city of Kaohsiung.

We stayed at Hotel Dua where the decor is modern and moody.

Huge bed, huge bathtub - what more does one need?

They also have a great patio and city view

and one of the biggest and best breakfast selections we saw in Taiwan.

Back north in Taipei I have two recommendations.

The first is Folio Da'an

which is where we stayed when we first arrived so we fell in love with it from the start.

It's a historical building that's been repurposed

so it's nestled into the cozy alleyways of Da'an, one of my neighbourhoods of Taipei.

Another area of the city I love is Ximending

and the citizenM hotel is right nearby.

We're back in Taipei and we just arrived at the cutest hotel.

Bathroom's in there, cute little thing on the bed, and then look at this view.

Oh my god.

Hi, Taipei!

This is an international chain

and the Taipei location is actually the first in Asia.

The rooms are small but comfortable and, really, it's all about the view.

They also have a great breakfast and sitting area where you can chill or work.

What ya got?

Yeah.

I said, 'What ya got?'

You said, 'Yeah.'

It's early.

Right nearby is the city's Old North Gate

as well as Camera Street where camera lovers like us

can find tons of different stores selling all sorts of cameras and accessories.

I'll link the rest of our Taiwan series below

where you can find more videos about top attractions

and experiences across the country,

visiting Taroko National Park,

shopping,

the mystery of the Abandoned UFO Village,

night markets,

Taiwanese cooking,

desserts,

and the top foods to try.

Fotowelt LED Studio Lamp [REVIEW] - Duration: 9:52.

as you guys can see my face is lit am i trying to pay myself a compliment no I'm

talking about photons and those photons are brought to you by Fotowelt, Fotowelt got me

this is beautiful LED studio light and I'm more than thrilled with it and I'm

gonna talk to you about some of the amazing features it contains but I have

to leave my office for that because I tried filming this review already and it

was it was terrible and it was terrible because the lights were off because I

was showing you the back end of it and it was too dark in here to show you the

features so case made the light is helpful so let's take this to a

hopefully brighter room and show you because outside it's a miss dark and

murky and little yeah so let's say let's take this is the

other room okay so I'm in a little bit better light now I have to literally sit

in your window that's how dark it is SM literally this is the line isn't it

pretty so on the front panel you'll see that

there are quite a few LEDs that are heard right now there are various

brightness settings on it but they do not change color on themselves but I'll

get you in a second about why it's still bicolor even though that the LEDs have

one color but let's first talk about the rest of the front so in it we have these

that plucked down actually they have a specific orbit so

we go with these ones first there we go those close up there and makes it a

little easier to store it protects the LEDs and the shutters or reflectors as

they're called in the manual also helped shape the light now let's close those

back up for a second and then go to the back now on the back of the

panel you'll notice that there are two slots for actually batteries now there

the LEDs six60 a pro batteries that go from there and they do not come with it

you can buy a kit that does harder this is the cheapest model it just comes with

the DC connector but the one that the battery option is pretty awesome if you

want to take your studio to go or if you are going to be filming at or taking

pictures at a wedding and you need additional lighting in the corners and

are no outlets being able to have batteries that you just pop in it is

extremely useful to have on this type of lighting system and since their LEDs

they're a little more power efficient and should run for a little while and if

you want to check the LED battery life if you want to check the battery life on

those there is a screen indicator that will always display the battery life at

that time so it's very differently this looks like a batteries or what you have

in the back here is the main dial which helps adjust the lighting strength which

is very slow but in a good way because it means that you can really fine-tune

the life to the point that you like so you keep cranking it until it's 41 but

if you want to skip that one with a little faster this button jumps the

increments of 25% so that you can boost the lighting a lot quicker and have it

where you wanted to be now one of the coolest features about this studio light

is the fact that it can be paired wirelessly with other studio lights on

the same kind so say you buy five of these and set them up all around your

studio you can set them to the same channel and you do you don't need a

remote or anything like that they're all connected

and if you change the setting on one of these lines if they're all on the same

channel they will all change to the exact setting that you just switched

them the brightness and all that which is pretty awesome it doesn't mean you

have to go running around changing all of the manuals so that is a very sweet

feature again I only have one so I don't get to really showcase that but that is

the thing now the other advantage of that is that you can have some lights on

one channel and some lights on the other and if you're trying to create a cool

light or distant light or whatever you can adjust those on this channel and it

will create you're lighting it back-to-back which also appears realness

okay and the back we have the power switch so on the full lips which is the

DC power that's from wired power in the middle that is the opposition and then

all the way to the right is for battery only so if you think you've turned it on

without looking and you hit the battery and something's wrong and you're

complaining that it's not fun okay so back to the color why is it by color

okay well one thing you may not have known is that it comes with this really

sturdy and nice nylon case which holds everything very well in it and there's

perhaps you have a shoulder strap too if you want to like it that way we can do

that so in if you have these filters one of these filters do I'll show you in a

second just looking the rest so you have your manual which I do recommend looking

over and then you can see everything fits in the cutouts of the foam pretty

cool so let's put the case down this goes on top the covers okay so the

filters

were confused so this doesn't change the color per se of the LEDs but it helps to

fuse them so I wouldn't make a bright that doesn't hurt your face it keeps

things from being a little harder and I think in a studio setting where you can

change and shake the lights a little bit more and that things have the visible

effect things more but when I have it that close to my face in my office it

doesn't change things too much except for the fact that I don't have

blazing LEDs directly in my face through diffusible bit so it makes a little

easier to look at the camera without being blinded this this changes things

this is a warming filter and it kind of mimics tungsten lighting and it does a

very good job of it I'll show an example right there yeah look at me there we go

this creates a really nice warm filter so if you want it to look like a more

natural setting if you want it to look like you know home lights instead of a

studio lights or bright white lights that's a good way to do it then there's

a few reasons why you'd want to do that and I'm sure you will figure it out if

I'm sure if you're looking for this sort of thing then you already know it so it

does have filters if you're thinking that the LEDs change themselves they

don't they tinge of brightness and they do get extremely bright filters so your

filters that must be a huge hassle well no they're not and I'll show you why so

inside of the lamp you'll see that the four corners have these metal tabs and

that the corners of these have magnets so what you do is you just slip them in

and they fall into place and it's connected

that is actually in there so it makes that pretty simple and then they have

little hole tabs that you can just kind of pull them out so they make that very

easy there's no real hassle when it comes to it you can do it with one hand

holding it right and so no complaints there you essentially get other filters

if you desire and that would fit in here but I tell them that works so for the

price I'd say that they are indeed a good buy if you're trying to amp up your

YouTube videos or you're trying to be a better videographer photographer but

your noticed that a lot of lighting and this doesn't have what you want your

when you're paying less you typically get less features but being able to

wirelessly control these have batteries them to be that bright conveniently

coming with a case and all that the price really includes a lot with this

lighting system so I'm I'm incredibly happy

I hate will if my office does get bigger or if I have to move locations or if I

do more videography I will be picking up more of these specifically to help step

up my game and they definitely do that so they get my wholehearted

recommendation so if you want to pick up some of these I will place their

variants in the description below that show you the different types that you

can get the multi LAN systems or some with an actual boom pool because I

didn't get that it does come with a mounting bracket for a boom or any

tripod not just the typical camera tripod but any lamp tripods the one I

got was the cheapest one and it did that but for a few dollars more I could

have gotten that but I had a pool in my room so I just mounted it to that no

take a couple bucks but for most cases you'll probably want to get a stand for

it so those are my thoughts on the photo well name system you let me know what

you think in the comments below alright guys I'll see you in the next one

Cut and Fill Calculations - Duration: 9:10.

You know and I wasn't back to Buildsum and in this video

I'm gonna use the readings that we got from our grid survey and I'm gonna use them to work out

The volume of spoil that we would need to

excavate if you're going to excavate this particular section of our block not the whole block, just this

Differently shaded section down to a given RL

Okay, so we're gonna just dig down maybe for a

You know footing for a house or a basement something the other dig this down or just even just leveling the block off

So you can start with a level block you're gonna dig this section down to a given RL

okay, so we've got to jump onto a

Sheet like this, which is a called the grid method

So obviously we've got a column here to pull our layout identification where we're actually readings taken from

We've got a bit here to work out our actual corner Heights

The number of squares, I'll explain that in a minute and then the result of element calculations cost

Yeah, and then the formula is the grid length times the grid length times

the total product of our

calculations up here

Divided by four that will give us the total volume of soil that we need to excavate for this

Building when we round it up to the nearest, you know whole cubic metre and your not going to be worried about to many points at the moment

all right, so

First we're going to enter is our

RL that we want to end up at so that the depth we're going to excavate to so in this case you're going to

Excavate to an RL of 11.000

Okay

We'll grab our plan for a little bit of reference and then we can start to work around so, you know

We're gonna start on this top corner here

which is identified as B3 so I'm gonna throw that in my

point column there and

the actual height of

B3 in comparison to our

RL that we want the height of that is

11.090

11.090 minus our

RL that we want at the end

Gives us a height difference of 90mm or 0.090

Okay, so we know that is 90mm deep there now that corner is only attached

To one of these squares that we want to do our work, our estimation in, so over here

In our number of squares, we just put 1

Okay and one times

0.090 it's obviously 0.090 All right, so that's be three

So I'll work across so the next one crosses B4

Okay, so and it's got a height of 11.170

So 11.170 minus 11.000 is 170mm

we're 0.170 now this intersection here is

connected to2

Squares that we want to excavate. So over in this column you have to put two and

2 times 0.170 All right gives us 0.340

Alright, and we just keep going around doing that. So B5

that's a height of

11.510 so minus the 11.000 give us

0.510

Again it's connected to 2 squares

so 2 in their so 2 times 0.510 gives us 1.020

then B6

It's 11.700 minus 11.000 gives us 0.7. It's still connected to 2 squares

gives us 1.400 there

B7 which is this last one here

Okay, there's a height of 11.850. So that's a depth of 850

I'm gonna connected to 1 square

they're only put 1 there and

that's 0.850

So back to C3 which is this middle one here

So it's got a height of

11.140 -11.000 gives us a height of 140. It's connected to two squares

So 2 in there and it gives us a depth on average depth of 280

C4 now C4s getting a little bit different it's got a depth of

360 mm but it's connected to 4 squares. All right, so it's 4 so 4 in there and

That'll give us 1.440 then

so C5 is

similar so

11.500 - 11.000 gives us 0.5 m depth for it's gonna go 4 squares and

Give us a total product of 2m

And C6 a little bit tricky

it's

11.850 - 11.000 gives you

0.85. This one's connected to three squares

One, two, three so three there. So 3 times 850 gives you 2.550

And then across the bottom

Sorry C7 out here

by itself

Right, so

940mm depth, there's only one square connected to that so

940 there and then the D's across the bottom row

Right first ones only got one

square

second - we've got two each and

The last one

Okay, so we've been around been around our

you know, um

Excavation and we've worked out the product for each of those and what we're going to do is we're just going to add them up

So that gives us a total of 14.310

Okay

So now we can put that into our formula. So our grid

Original grid was 5m x 5m

Okay, and our product is 14.310

Okay, so that divided by 4. So who do the top above the line first

5 x 5 x 14.310, gives us 357.750

Divide that by 4 gives us 89.438 as our total volume

We can round that up to 90 cubic metres of material to be excavated

Okay, so that's alright if we actually want to excavate but if we wanted to make our block just level you didn't want to have

Any excavation and we want to find at the RL that would give us that so we you know, cut and fill

We can we can do that now. So the way you do that to take the14.310 and

You divide it by the total sum of all these so they all add up to 28

So divide this by 28 it gives you a figure of 0.511

If you add that back to your original formation RL

Right, it'll give you a new RL of 11.511, if you were to put that

In to this sheet as your formation RL and redo those calculations

You would end up with zero excavation

So you would not have to remove any soil from site and you would if you put your,

Set your block at a RL of 11.511

You would have zero excavation and end up a level area on your block with no excess soil

All right, so that's how we calculate the volume. You see the buried that method volume of excavation using the food

UFC 229: Conor McGregor's coach John Kavanagh outlines what went wrong against Khabib Nurmagomedov - - Duration: 4:27.

Conor McGregor's coach John Kavanagh has outlined what went wrong during the Irishman's UFC 229 defeat to Khabib Nurmagomedov, saying McGregor was too defensive against the lightweight champion of the world

McGregor went into the fight as the underdog, and was forced to tap out in the fourth round after a dominant performance from Nurmagomedov

Khabib clearly won the first round and recorded 10-8 scorecards in the second, before McGregor was able to keep the fight on the feet and take the third

The result means all four of McGregor's professional MMA losses have come by submission, while nine of Khabib's 27 wins have come as a result of his opponent tapping out

MORE: McGregor refuses to back down | Rob Whittaker's message for Khabib and Conor Nurmagomedov's wrestling and grappling pedigree were clearly a huge concern for McGregor's team - possibly to the detriment of his attacking strengths, according to Kavanagh

Speaking on the Joe Rogan Podcast two days after the fight, Kavanagh took responsibility for what may have gone wrong in the fight and in the preparation

"I do think round three showed promise," he said."I'd have liked to change things up a little bit

Specifically, a more offensive mindset.I thought defensively we did quite well."But offensively we weren't where we usually are

Right when the fight was over I was thinking 'I was going into this not to lose, but not to win

' "His shots weren't as crisp as they normally are.He had opportunities to hit him, especially in the third round, and something was off

" Kavanagh, who has been in McGregor's corner for his entire career, also said the huge gap between fights was a factor

McGregor's last MMA fight was nearly two years ago, at UFC 205 in November 2016 when he beat Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight belt

Since then, the Irishman has only had one boxing match against Floyd Mayweather in August 2017

Despite all the training and preparation, Kavanagh said, nothing can prepare you for the realities of a real fight with the best 155-pounder in the world

"We tried to mimic it as close as we could in the gym, and I bought in guys that he didn't know and we'd say 'this is fight day' and we'd have a referee to get the fight feel," Kavanagh said

"But it's still in the gym." As happened after his loss to Nate Diaz, McGregor has already demanded a rematch, and Kavanagh confirmed the 30-year-old is adamant on running it back

"You have to factor in his personality, and he's only fighting now for fights that are really interesting to him," he said

"It would be hard to motivate him (to fight someone else) - it's Khabib time."It was like when he lost the Diaz I fight, and backstage he was screaming and shouting at the top brass about getting the rematch at 170 as quick as possible

"I'm in the background going, 'no, please, don't.Did you not see that fight? He's a terrifying individual

' "He was not letting that go.And that's all I'm hearing now."
