Youtube daily report Apr 13 2017

This is the Eszett (ß).

Hi, I'm Marco from AuthenticGermanLearning.com

and today I teach you how to write the Eszett – the sharp s

or "the German B" as some call it.

So, I've got a notepad and then I'll try

to write it as visible as possible for you.

And when you write Eszett by hand, then ...

We begin. So about here is the line. I hope you see it well.

We begin here, we go up, then we go very far down

and then we go up again and then we form the "B" and then we continue.

I can write for example ... I can write: I ... (Let's write everything in cursive.)

"I" and then: hei ... And then, here: So, of course, I write "My name is ..."

and I wrote "hei" and then, after the i, I go up as I said.

I went up very high and then I go very far down,

like a p, as if I would write a p. With the p, I'd also go very far down.

And then back up to the top again and then the "B" and then a e.

So that's how one would write "My name is". Maybe I have exaggerated a bit;

so perhaps one does not have to go down quite so far, so I can also write ...

Like this! I would just write it like this, if I would write it quickly.

And that's how we write the small ß. That's how we write the lowercase letter.

And how do you write the capital ß?

How do you write the Eszett, if you want to write a capital letter?

Well, that was a trick question.

You see, there is [officially] no uppercase ß, because no word begins with ß.

One finds the ß only in lowercase in a word, never at the beginning.

If I want to write everything in capital letters ... Suppose I say:

Okay, I now write "ich heiße": I - capital C - capital H. Like this.

And then: capital H - capital E - capital I ... And what do I do now?

After all, the ß only exists in lowercase!

Well, I write ... If I want to write everything in capital letters, I write:

S - S - then E. Then I write it this way.

I write the ß again over the whole page and you're welcome to practice it at home as well.

Take a piece of paper and participate! Yes? Then we can write the ß together.

I start in the middle or on the line. Like this. Then we go up, then down, then again very high,

then the "B" and then we go on. This is the ß.

And of course as is always the case:

Everyone has their own cursive handwriting and everyone writes things a bit differently.

That means, one person won't make this gap here that large

another will make the "B" a bit smaller and so on.

There, you're welcome to make your own variation. As long as you're going up, then down,

then the "B" and then it's already a sharp s. It's actually not that hard, okay?

Now you can write the ß, if you have a pen.

But what do you do when you want to write the ß with the keyboard?

Well, if you have the US keyboard, for example

then there is no way to write the ß for you at first.

You have to change your keyboard to German.

Or: There are certain websites with which you can write the ß

and I'll leave you a link in the description to this website.

Alright? Or you just copy the ß from somewhere and insert it into your sentence.

But the best option with the computer is of course with certain websites.

Or you just switch your keyboard.

Thank you for watching and see you next time. Bye!
