Youtube daily report Jun 8 2017

Added sugar seems to be in everything.

I was at the supermarket yesterday trying to find a healthy snack for the children and

they wanted something sweet.

So we decided to buy a watermelon (only a small one) and it ended up costing $10.23.

A single watermelon cost more than 10 bucks!

For comparison, chocolate biscuits (150 g) at Aldi imported from the UK cost 75 cents.

Per 100 g, they contain 2092 kJ (499 kcal) of energy and 31 g of sugar.

Per 100 g, the watermelon contains 127 kJ (30 kcal) of energy and 6.2 g of sugar.

Of course, every other sugar or salt laden snack was dirt cheap, too.

Veggies and fruits were almost all expensive.

So what's going on here?

Why are healthy, nutritious foods so expensive, yet unhealthy, refined snacks so cheap?

Most snacks in Australian supermarkets are less than $2.

Many are less than $1!

Most fruits and vegetables cost more than $5 a kilogram, often a lot more.

No wonder we have an obesity and diabetes crisis.

Taxing Sugar

What we need to do to fix this problem is to implement a tax to change people's behaviour.

I'm not a big fan of taxes (nor capitalism for that matter), but if that's what it

takes to make eating healthy easier, then I think we should do it.

If something is cheap, people will buy it more often.

I don't blame any parent for choosing a "fruit bar" over a real piece of fruit

if the fruit bar is a quarter the price.

I'm a parent and I've fallen for it many times.

A big bag of chips often only costs $1.59 at Coles or Woolworths.

The kids like it (as do we) and it makes us feel happy (although fleetingly).

However, we also like eating watermelon, but at $10 a pop, it's an expensive habit.

So how would a tax work?

Many people in the last five or 10 years have spoken of a "sugar tax", but almost every

politician gives in to the big corporations and refuses to implement such a thing.

Nobody likes to rock the boat and the sugar industry certainly doesn't want any policy

that affects their bottom line.

Here's my idea for a tax.

For every gram of added sugar in a product, tax it by 1%.

So the biscuits I mentioned from Aldi with 31 g of sugar would have a tax of 31%.

Now before you get out the pickaxes, 31% of 75 cents is only about 23 cents.

So the new price for the bickies would be 98 cents – still less than a dollar.

Of course, fruit would remain untaxed as it doesn't contain added sugar.

What do we do with all this newfound tax revenue?

Well, we use all of it to subsidise fresh fruit and veg.

Now, I don't know how much revenue we could muster this way, but I predict that it would

be a lot.

If every box of sugary snacks and bottles of soft drink cost a little bit extra, and

every piece of fruit and veg cost a little bit less, we would be well on our way to solving

this ridiculous obesity epidemic that we've found ourselves in.

It might turn out that the taxes collected are beyond our expectations.

In this case, use the extra revenue to sponsor children's sport and other outdoor activities.

We just need a political party to have the courage to push such measures through.

We can't let the junk food industry dictate what foods we put in our mouth.

Yes, I know there must be some personal responsibility from consumers, but price plays a big factor.

Cheap foods sell more often than expensive ones.

Come on Australia (and every other obese country in the world)!

Let's stop sucking up to the big "food" companies and make Australia healthy again.

YouTube Inferno: Games Done Quick (and the speedrunner gang) - JMAA - Duration: 8:18.

[intro]

[throwing off shit like a spastic]

[our dark overlord sits in his throne in complete desperation to symbolize the vanity of humankind

in the vast immensity of the Universe]

Hey gay demons, your dark bleh bleh bleh

Y'know, I don't care anymore.

I just don't.

I legitly want to die at this point.

I want to kill myself.

I want to throw myself off a cliff just to crash into a box of exploding nitroglycerin

and blow up into pieces, because that would be the best way to kill myself after watching

all these speedrunners being autistic.

Let's see if we can make this video less than 10 minutes, hopefully we can speedrun

this game of YouTube Inferno at ANY%.

[CRINGE]

Most of the speedrunner community is very well known for a lot of antics, for being

utter complete autistic spergs that have the temperance of DarksydePhil, but even worse.

Or worse than the temperance of Spoony so far.

These antics do only teach us one thing: at the end of the day, it's just pixel games.

If you take them that seriously, maybe you're kinda of a faggot.

[spergin']

And probably the biggest of the speedrunner community who's well known for doing autistic

shit is Games Done Quick, who, as you may see, they're even inclusive of the furry

community as well.

[yiffin']

I feel bad for these people, I really get into their shoes and feel like that, I wouldn't

imagine trying so hard to complete fucking Crash Bandicoot on the PS1 while trying to

not be an embarrassment in public.

(GDQ) "This is Crash Bandicoot 2 ANY% game reviews, and we like to commit suicide.

Please, do not try this at home."

"Usually they just give you wompa fruit, and no, THEY'RE NOT APPLES.

THEY'RE WOMPA FRUIT!"

"It makes you go slightly faster, and by the way it's 80 (???) per second, don't

try it at home, but I like to pleasure my controller…"

(Ralph Wiggum) "Help!

She's touching my special area!"

There's many more of these cringe moments from Games Done Quick on YouTube, so probably

I won't go through all of them, but here's one that perfectly summarizes all their career:

(GDQ) "Hey, uh… none of you guys are funny, if you want to prevent cancer, consider standing

out in front of the shuttle that's running in front of the hotel, only hour.

Thank you."

[round of applause]

["CHARITY"]

I have to say, I am perfectly fine with doing charity streams, that's for sure, but my

only stipulation with charity streams is that maybe you should watch where you spend your

charity money.

It would be incredibly suspicious to run a charity stream and have such donation incentives

such as "Praise the Sun" patches or numerous amounts of game merch, because it would show

that your charity stream would be possibly vain since you could be probably spending

that money you could spend on charity on the so-called "donation incentives" instead,

or not spending that money on charity at all.

But man, sure, what a way to remind us that these are charity streams by saying…

(GDQ) "We of course are supporting Prevent Cancer for this event"

You could not, however.

I won't obviously deny the possibility that you're sending this huge amount of money

to charity, but so far it doesn't seem to be any transparent.

And it wouldn't seem like you're helping much in treating things like cancer or saving

people from cancer either, so, I don't know, it pretty much seems like dodgy shit… please

don't sue me for defamation.

If you really want to aid people with cancer, maybe you could just go to fund some real

scientific research and let them discover a cure for it, but nah!

We're fucking lazy!

That's why my mom died of cancer a decade ago.

(off voiceover) Hey, before you all go like "unga bunga defamation bro" like fucking

raging monkeys, I have to say that if you look up stuff about this whole Games Done

Quick charity thing on the web, there's going to be pretty equally skeptical people

about how GDQ handles this whole charity thing, so basically, I'm pretty much not the only

one skeptical here, so maybe don't only blame me for being such a defaming piece of

shit.

["ENTERTAINMENT"]

You know?

I understand what entertains someone is merely subjective, as if someone might get entertained

by a bunch of colors dancing around, but I still argue this:

How the fuck is it watching a bunch of cringe-worthy autistic and socially inept nerds playing

a fucking game mostly in silence any kind of entertainment?

Again, what entertains you is merely subjective, but it doesn't mean that entertainment is

good.

I don't think you're either a good streamer when you got awkward moments of silence like

this:

[awkward silence]

♫ Hello darkness my old friend ♫ ♫ I've come to talk with you again ♫

Look, if your commentary in general is less entertaining than anything DarksydePhil pulls

out, don't even try to upload it to the Internet, it's just beyond bad.

In fact, don't even make me bring up the Scarce meme again, it's not funny anymore,

it's just that your voice is just boring.

[CONCLUSIONS]

I don't seem to understand what's so interesting about these speedrunners, they just like to

pretend they're such a huge deal of Internet celebrities or something about some sort of

sport… it really isn't.

You would watch something out of PewDiePie or the sort and you would at least find some

more sort of entertainment there, at least it's purely made for the entertainment of

others and it's mainly made for that.

But honestly, though, who would remember these guys at Games Done Quick or ANY of the speedrunners

in a long time?

It's isn't likely that they'll be remembered for such thing as "OH DOOD, THEY'VE JUST

COMPLETED DARK SOULS 3 IN LESS THAN 1 HOUR DOOD!", it's not a real feat.

If you want to make a real feat in life, just try to climb a mountain or skyscraper, or

lift the heaviest thing you could possibly lift up, or maybe just beat off a real Guinness

record or even just a local record.

Or maybe you could just beat off the hardest game of Dark Souls in a much shorter time

than that or beat some worldwide champion of Street Fighter V, even though there's

no worth physical effort there.

At the end of the day, video games are just basically sitting down a chair only barely

moving the fingers pressing buttons to move virtual pixels on a screen, it doesn't matter

if you moved those pixels the most in the least amount of time, because even the physical

or mental feats that any human being can make don't matter at all.

Especially because who gives a shit about some sad autistic loser playing games for

a living in the future?

This has been the report of the week, and as always, good night, and good luck.

[the show's over]

[Ducktales Moon music starts playing]

Why NASA wants to bring potatoes to Mars - Duration: 6:30.

Why NASA wants to bring potatoes to Mars

Little do we know about the details of the trip that at some point in the future will lead the first human explorer to Mars.

However, it is quite possible that the Peruvian potato figure in the diet of this pioneering astronaut.

NASA, together with the Peruvian-based International Potato Center (CIP), is experimenting to discover how Peruvian tubers would grow on Martian soil.

To this end, they started experimental potato cultivation under conditions that simulate those of the red planet.

According to the institutions, on Earth there are few places to test better than the Pampas de la Joya desert in Peru, on the border with Chile.

"They are volcanic soils that do not contain any life forms, just like on Mars," Joel Ranck, CIP's communications chief, told BBC World.

Diet for everyone

In addition to the "Martian" landscapes, there is another reason that makes Peru the ideal place to experiment with potatoes.

"Here we have 4,500 varieties of potatoes, so Peru is a very good place to find out which one would best suit the conditions of Mars"

Says the spokesman of the CIP, an institution that is part of an international network of agricultural research centers.

In the first phase of the experiment, Julio Valdivia, a Peruvian NASA affiliated scientist, will take samples of the desert soil and deliver it to the CIP laboratories, where up to nine types of potatoes will be tested under these severe conditions.

From there, a technology developed by NASA will be used to replicate the atmospheric conditions of Mars, and see what effects they would have on plants.

The idea is to leave the astronauts with a good idea of how viable would be the agricultural colonization of the planet with this type of crop.

This is an idea that, in some way, is fashionable thanks to Hollywood.

That's exactly what makes the character of Matt Damon, an abandoned astronaut on the red planet, in the recent movie Lost on Mars.

To survive in the months leading up to the arrival of a rescue mission, he sows the tuber in Martian soil, so he can feed himself.

Joel Ranck chief of communications of the CIP, said the following sentence:

"Potatoes are an excellent source of vitamin C, iron and zinc," says Ranck. "We do not believe that anyone should depend exclusively on one food, but the potato is very nutritious. One, boiled, delivers the vitamin C that an adult needs for one day," he explains.

According to him, there is no doubt that the potato would be an important part of the varied and balanced diet that would require the astronauts to carry out their tasks 225 million kilometers from Earth.

Frozen potato

One of the variables that worries the researchers is that the potatoes begin to germinate ahead of time.

"Estimate of travel to Mars light nine months," with CIP spokesman. And as anyone who has stored potatoes at home already knows, after a while the tubers begin to germinate. So an idea would be to freeze during a space crossing.

The experiments that seek to answer these questions will be held at CIP headquarters in Lima and other locations, including the desert.

The team of researchers and students from universities from different countries will also be integrated into the team, which would help gather the data needed for the study.

"Potatoes are the third most important crop in the world, and it is part of the diet of almost all human cultures," explains Ranck.

With global warming and desertification, it is increasingly important to find varieties that are more resistant to drought conditions, he recalls.

What do you think about this ?

Will it be that in the distant future, will we colonize Mars?

How To Procrastinate Effectively - Duration: 4:36.

this episode is supported by Squarespace you are watching this video well let's

be real with each other you should probably be doing something else maybe

you're at work maybe you should be studying perhaps you should be writing

that thing you've been writing and you should definitely be paying more

attention to your site but the good news is that procrastinating by watching

certain YouTube videos it can be classified as effective procrastination

actually there's a number of ways you can effectively waste time that lead to

a boost in problem-solving productivity and creativity scientific research is

truly beautiful researchers at the University of Melbourne have published a

number of studies on workplace internet leisure browsing I excel at workplace

into that leisure browsing in one study researchers found that workers who surf

the internet for fun at work within a reasonable time limit say less than 20%

of their total time in the office a 9% more productive than those who don't

from this and follow up studies that researchers argue that workplace

internet ledger rolling is an unobtrusive interruption which enables

restoration of mental capacity and fosters feelings of autonomy another

study out of the University of California entitled inspired by

distraction found when participants did an undermining task compared to doing a

demanding task resting or having no break it led to substantial improvements

in performance on a problem they'd encountered before researchers concluded

that allowing the mind to wander through simple tasks can boost creative

problem-solving originally scientists thought mind wandering allowed the brain

to rest and returning to the problem well rested with all you would need to

solve it now if some scientists think that mind wandering might distract you

from your perceived obstacles and brain imaging research shows that while you're

doing another simple task the brain regions responsible for decision-making

keep working your brain is unconsciously process

the information related to your decisions I think that's pretty cool and

there are lots of ways to distract yourself and procrastinate I know more

than anyone but there are ways to do it effectively first up make sure a simple

task is just that simple and not related to a problem you're trying to solve so

don't do logic puzzles when you're trying to solve a math problem instead

watch Gope videos on youtube next avoid activities that are ego-driven

meaning is checking Facebook Instagram and generally distractions filled with

friends family and other personalities you're familiar with and if you're not

trying to problem-solve but just really have a problem with procrastinating you

can use a strategy called implementation intention where you make a list of all

the things you need to do and if you're distracted or taking a break then do

them one by one also you could just go for a walk lots of studies show that

people who go on daily walks score higher on tests that measure creative

thinking and productivity of course that putting these findings into practice

effectively all depends on you finding the right balance of work and downtime

activities that are almost useless so the next time you're procrastinating

keep in mind that it can have benefits try unfocus ignore attention spending

short periods of time doing simple tasks can have a positive effect on your

decision-making and creative thinking abilities just like watching this video

of the Sun in ultra HD a great way to procrastinate thanks to Squarespace into

supporting this episode whether you need is mean a website or an online store

Thank you for giving me courage! Until the day I see you again

I eventually became the reliable person I always imagined becoming

I'd take your encouragement and warmth for granted, but now,

I can always feel you close beside me

I can finally stand here and say, "I'm home"!

I'm holding something tightly in my chest

Where will all this pain lead to?

The pages of our memories turn before we know it

I wonder if we can keep up...

We meet. We part ways

We grow close, lending each other strength and sometimes fighting

But there's something I want to tell you

Y'know, you stuck with me,... and I want to do the same with you

I eventually became able to encourage someone for someone else's sake

Getting closer to your heart now, have I managed to become a bit stronger?

Even when I stumbled, you still gave me a smile

I can finally stand here and say, "Welcome home"!

We're still searching

Though we still can't find it

When the morning comes, we'll proceed down the path illuminated for us!

So let's walk on to where the rain has lifted, beyond the rainbow

No matter how hilly the road is, it will lead us to the light

Even if the answer changes its shape...

The reliable person I always imagined becoming is right here!

Even if I'm still fumbling for my dream. I know I'm moving forward!

I can always feel you close beside me

I can finally stand here and say, "I'm home"!

Nightcore - 4 O'CLOCK (KPOP) - RM & V + English lyrics - Duration: 3:17.

One day

To the moon

I wrote a long, long letter

It would not be brighter than you

But I lit up a small candle

A nameless bird that sings in the dusky park

Where are you?

Oh you

Why are you crying? You and I are the only ones here

Me and you

Oh you

Following into the deep night

With the sound of you singing

A step, and another step

Bringing in the next dawn

The dawn passes

And when that moon falls asleep

The blue shade that was with me disappears

Even today, I live moderately

I walk in pace, moderately wearing down

The is sun suffocating me

And the world is stripping me of all I have

There's nothing I can do, there's no other way

I collect myself that's shattered beneath the moonlight

I call you moonchild

We are the moons children

I breathe the cold night air of the dawn

Yes we're living and dying At the same time

But you can open your eyes for now

Just like that any movie, like the line (from the movie) The entire world is blue inside the moonlight

A nameless bird that sings in the dusky park

Where are you?

Oh you

Why are you crying? You and I are the only ones here

Me and you

oh you
