Hello! I'm Cecelia Louie of Paper Zen. I'm happy to announce that I've finished my
latest book, Quilling Lowercase Letters. It's written in the same format as my
previous book, Quilling Letters, so I've done all the measuring for you. For this
book I'll be showing how to outline the letters, so make sure to subscribe to my
channel and follow along. If you're new to my channel and want to try quilling a
letter you can visit my blog to download both the uppercase and lowercase a, in
PDF format. You'll find all the links below in the notes. I sometimes get asked
why I'm providing my book in a digital download, and not as a printed book. It's
a great question! In all my tutorials in this series, I'm asking you to trace, cut,
enlarge, and reduce pages. So can you imagine mutilating a printed book like
that? However, if it's a printed book you're looking for, my first book was
published in 2014, and it's the same style that you've all gotten to know.
Every strip here is measured for you. There are over 25 projects in here for
many occasions. The examples you see here are made with conventional quilling
paper, and not the same thick strips I've been using for these letters. Just look
in the notes below the video, and you'll see all the links to the items I've
mentioned. As for how to fill in the letters, please watch my previous videos
for a variety of ideas. This artwork is on the cover of my new book, and if you
look closely you'll see that the blossoms are all slightly different
sizes. That's because I didn't use a pre-measured strip. I actually prefer
them being different because it looks less structured and staged. To make these
berries, I just took a strip maybe about the size of my knuckle. I guess that's
about an inch, and I tore this strip. I find a torn edge helps you kind of hide
it, rather than seeing such a thick seam at the end of your coil. So I'm just
going to soften that strip and roll it around my quilling needle,
and just glue that closed,
and then I just take a look at the space that I have, and for something like this
I just look at you know how long of a strip do I want that to be? And in this
case, I do want a blunt cut edge so I'll trim that end and then I'll just glue
that to the berry here and see how that fits in that space and then I just
simply do another one and attach that to to the first strip and I'll do all the
berry parts first and then you know check and measure against the space that
I'm going to be putting it in and if I need to adjust anything I take it up and
read it and put it back in and just you know check out these proportions to make
sure that it's going to fit in that space the way I want so to make these to
make these little buds here I took a strip about the length of my knuckle and
I'm going to tear both ends soften the strip and then I'm going to rub right in
the middle so when I rub what that's going to do is cause just that portion
to curve a lot more than the rest of the areas and then I'm going to just glue
those two ends together
and then I'm going to take maybe double that length and do something similar I
just soften it up and again roll it so it takes on that same shape now where
it's different here is I'm just going to soften in the opposite direction just on
the ends so you can see what kind of shape that's going to make no and then I
will always test it against the one that I've already made before I start gluing
so I want to adjust this bud to however I need it to be and if I want like you
can change the shape of this bud just by pushing the bottom end and it becomes
fatter or you can make it more skinny just by squishing it a little bit and
that's going to change the look of every one of your blossoms so try to imagine
this before you start gluing it together just to make sure is this the ratio that
you want so I want it to be about there
I'll just add a little bit of glue to the middle here and add the first piece
in there and always bring it back down to your surface just to make sure things
are lying flat because there's nothing worse than trying to glue something in
and one piece is to tucking up and it's just going to start fighting with you so
then I'm just going to add some glue you could add it to the middle piece or the
ends whichever you prefer and just bring those pieces together
and then you just need to snip off the excess
and that's how I created the but then you just simply add a stem to it figure
out you know where where on the letter you want it to go and every letter every
space is going to be a little different it doesn't matter that this is smaller
than the space allowed I actually like that breathing room whereas here it's
kind of touching the letter C and it also depends how much structure you want
to give around your letter so in this case because I felt it you know I didn't
need to support it see these walls they're kind of on their own and when
you don't have items next to that purple wall if you can imagine so this would be
a little weaker so because these leaves are here I can add a spot of glue here
and strengthen it up so in this case because it's kind of making this shape I
felt it was strong enough to be on its own so I didn't need to bring the bud
right to the edge so just play with it and whatever works for you now for the
leaf that you see here here everywhere I'm just going to show you how to do
that I generally start with pre softening all my strips I just find that
I find that the papers are more malleable to work with so I'm going to
fold it in half and then with a crochet hook I just like that circumference more
I'm just going to soften the folded part here and then open it up and then I'm
going to soften that part and then on the opposite end soften that part so you
can see how that leaf is just taking shape now then open up the leaf add a
dab of glue right there in the middle of the fold
and then you're going to take a softened stem and just insert that into the
middle of the fold now normally you would wait till this is dry but you know
I'm impatient here for you and I'm just going to wiggle the ends until I know
this is the kind of leaf that I'm looking for so you could have a leaf
that looks like that or like that you can play with that and when you have
decided okay see that's what happens when you're impatient right the stem
comes out so you could choose to add glue either with a fine tip glue bottle
like this and if you don't have something like that then you just need
to add it too with a toothpick add it to a piece of plastic like that a thin line
like that and you can just dip it then after you dip it you can decide where
you want that edge to come down on the stem and then it's really important for
you to hold it right there until the glue sets
then dip the other side and using a pair of tweezers I just make it match the
opposite and
and that's how you get your leaf to create these little swirly bits here
it's really simple I just take a strip and soften it up and I'll soften both
ends by the way it's just something I do you don't have to do this but that's
what I prefer to do so then I simply call that around loosen it up and recoil
that by hand and I find that when I coil it up again by hand I can control the
concentric circles like that and then I'll soften the opposite end if I want
it to go in another direction and just reshape that coil the arcs as you as you
need and that's how you get coils like that don't forget to visit my blog to
download your free template - give it a try I want to keep improving my
tutorials so would you let me know what tip was new for you in the comments
below or what technique you enjoyed learning about most if you enjoyed this
video I hope you give it two thumbs up thanks and see you next time!
