U.S. President-elect Donald Trump is making it very clear that he's going to put pressure
on automakers to keep more jobs in the United States.
In his latest tweet,... Trump has taken aim at Japanese automaker Toyota,... saying it
will pay heavy tariffs it if builds its cars for the U.S. market at a plant in Mexico.
Trump wrote, "Toyota Motor said will build a new plant in Baja, Mexico, to build Corolla
cars for U.S. NO WAY Build plant in U.S. or pay big border tax."
Following the tweet,... shares of Toyota Motor on the New York Stock Exchange tumbled by
half a percent.
In response, Toyota said the Mexican plant won't affect jobs in the U.S. and it looks
forward to collaborating with the Trump administration.
Some say Trump's intervention in a foreign company's business plan could stir controversy
in diplomacy circles.
Critics also say the idea of a "border tax" may breach regulations initiated by the World
Trade Organization.
