- [Tina] Um,
today is a very very special Facebook Live.
You're not gonna believe what we're doing.
And I am super super pumped.
Today, we're going to be going to
Malandra's Martial Arts Center
and meeting with Michael Malandra,
and guess what?
We're breaking wood.
So, seriously
come on with me
and let's break some wood.
A big sip of water first.
Had to confess, it's been about 10 years
since my last wood break,
so come on, let's go.
(car door opening)
So we're here in Suffern New York
and we are in Lafayette Ave. in Suffern New York
and we're on or way to Malandra's Martial Arts Center
to break wood,
with Michael Malandra,
and Michael was a
judge for my black belt test,
and we've known each other for,
I don't know, I think it's been about 15
or 20 years.
Michael also runs a,
is a photographer, so he also runs Michael Malandra
photography in the
in part of his dojo.
So,
you can see we are at 14 Lafayette,
in Suffern New York.
Breaking wood!
(road construction)
Getting little nervous.
Hell, hello, hello
- [Michael] Hey Tina
- [Tina] Hey
- [Michael] Hey
- [Tina] How are you Michael
- [Michael] Good,
How's dad going?
- [Tina] Great to see you Mike
- [Michael] Great seeing you
You wanna put your jacket here in the office
- [Tina] Yeah yeah, I think I'll put it here
Wow I'm a little nervous,
it's been like 10 years since
- [Michael] Since you've done something like this?
- [Tina] Yeah, wow
- [Michael] It'll be a piece of cake
- [Tina] I'm really really excited
What's going on, the studio looks great
- [Michael] Thank you, thank you
This is my gallery space,
where I hang all my photography
that I shoot around the country and
actually throughout the world.
And, what you're standing used to be the waiting
area from school.
- [Tina] I remember,
- [Michael] Yeah
- [Tina] Yeah
- [Michael] So what we did was we moved the waiting
area beyond this wall here,
which I'll show you when we go in
- [Tina] Okay
- [Michael] On that side, that's where
we'll be doing the board breaking.
- [Tina] Wow
- [Michael] And this is where I do all my photography now
- [Tina] I love this print of the front of the
flat iron, I...
- [Michael] Thank you
- [Tina] I haven't seen this one,
and we love our gold by the way
- [Michael] Oh cool, cool
- [Tina] Yeah yeah
- [Michael] Awesome I'm glad
- [Tina] Yeah so you took out the bull
for Beacon Wealth Management
- [Michael] Yeah, unfortunately I don't do enough
shooting in New York City.
I wanna go back and I wanna do more,
just with time constraints,
but,
I do have some pretty cool shots from the city
and this is one of them, and the gold of course.
- [Tina] Well of course I have to plug,
Malandra, MichaelMalandraPhotography.com if anybody
wants to order...
- [Michael] Yeah you can look for the website,
they can give me a call,
there's a lot of new stuff that I didn't have a
chance to put up on the site,
so a lot of what you're seeing here is
from Iceland and Sedona and Hawaii
is not up on the site yet.
- [Tina] Looks really cool.
- [Michael] Thank you
- [Tina] Okay, well we're not breaking wood in here
are we?
- [Michael] (laughing) No
- [Tina] Not this part of your school,
okay here.
- [Michael] So this is the new waiting area,
which used to be part of the training area.
- [Tina] Right, right right.
I remember, it looks great, the place is...
- [Michael] Thank you
- [Tina] Hasn't changed,
I haven't been in a dojo in a couple of years,
- [Michael] Wow okay so this is gonna be exciting
- [Tina] Yeah this is gonna be great
- [Michael] Alright
- [Tina] And thank you,
thanks for making the time,
I'm really really truly excited
(wood being tapped)
There's the wood.
- [Michael] That's it,
those are special boards
- [Tina] Okay special boards,
they're paper thing right?
- [Michael] No actually the exact opposite,
they're sappy, they've been sitting out,
(laughing)
- [Tina] But it is real wood, right?
- [Michael] Yes, yes
- [Tina] Just for everybody,
that just actually hurt my fingers
- [Michael] People always ask me
is there like a website you buy the wood from?
- [Tina] Yeah, yeah
- [Michael] What I do is I go to Home Depot,
- [Tina] Okay
- [Michael] I buy,
it's one by twelve pine,
I buy six foot lengths,
I bring them to
my land lord's wood chop
- [Tina] Right
- [Michael] And we cut 'em up
- [Tina] Wow
- [Michael] And this is what it is
- [Tina] How big is this piece?
- [Michael] This piece is,
six inches.
For the kids, we do four inches,
and then teenagers and adults we do six to eight inches.
These happen to be six.
- [Tina] Okay they happen to be six inches.
Okay boy
- [Michael] You wanna pick the board
- [Tina] Pick the thinnest board that you possibly can
they're all the same size
- [Michael] They're all the same
- [Tina] Wow
Here we go.
- [Michael] We're doing
Headbutt?
- [Tina] No, no, no, no, no, no
- [Michael] No we're not doing headbutt?
Oh elbow,
I thought we were gonna do headbutt
- [Tina] It's been a long time, elbow
strikes right?
- [Michael] (laughing) Yeah yeah definitely
okay cool.
- [Tina] Okay, we're gonna warm up hopefully
- [Michael] You tell me, you ready? You wanna warm up or
- [Tina] Yeah I haven't done in a while
- [Michael] Why don't we do something like
do the focus strengths
- [Tina] So you're like a what, tenth degree black belt?
- [Michael] No
you know honestly, people ask and I tell them
I don't remember anymore,
it's like fifth or sixth, I don't know
- [Tina] Okay
fifth or sixth
- [Michael] It's about that way about my uniform
to keep my top together
(laughing)
Alright so,
we're obviously gonna be using elbows
let's just warm up, let's do
we'll do left right,
so we'll go left here on one two,
(target being punched)
and then three.
So we'll go one two, and then three
That's it good
- [Tina] Okay
(target being punched)
- [Michael] That's it
And you haven't done this in how long?
- [Tina] I haven't done this in like seven years
- [Michael] Really
well I'm glad you're hitting the pad, not me
That's it
Good
Good, now let's do it again,
one, two, three, elbow
and then right here,
for whichever one you wanna use
- [Tina] Okay got it
- [Michael] That's it
Good
You wanna teach class?
I need a new instructor.
- [Tina] It's been a while
- [Michael] Okay now let's do the same thing
but before we punch I'm gonna swing here,
so block, block,
block, then one, two, elbow
Yeah you can block, or you can cover
whatever you're comfortable with
Four times, you miss it's eight and a half
- [Tina] Yep
- [Michael] Alright ready, go
That's it
One, two elbow
Good
(pads being hit)
Good
Alright so why don't we replace the knee
one more thing for a round kick
- [Tina] Oh boy it's been a long time
- [Michael] Alright, super slow,
let's do a little slow
- [Tina] Okay hold on
Block, block, left
- [Michael] Yep and I'm gonna
I'm gonna keep the pads, I'll keep 'em here
And then instead of dropping you for the knee,
we come to a round kick
Okay
So I'm gonna be here close on you
When you empty through to your elbow strike
I'm gonna back up
and put you into your kicking zone
Okay, so when I back up,
that's your que to throw the kick
- [Tina] Okay
- [Michael] We'll do it slow, ready
One two,
here,
that's it
Again, we'll do it slow
Ready
One, two
hit, hit, elbow, kick
Good, that's good
Alright full speed now, hundred miles per hour
Ready, go
(pads being hit)
Two, kick
Again
Hit, hit, kick,
good
Now same thing, but finishing and we're done
And when you kick let's save the knee
You can't leave the knee out right
- [Tina] No
I love this
Love this, this feels great
- [Michael] Alright ready
Here we go
The same thing but after you throw the kick,
I'm gonna come to here and that's when you do the knee
- [Tina] Okay the kick is gonna replace the knee
- [Michael] And then we're gonna add the knee back in
at the very end
- [Tina] Okay so wait,
so run through that one more time
- [Michael] Okay, let's go slow
I'm gonna guide you through it
Block, block, hit, hit,
elbow, kick, knee
That's it
We're gonna finish with the knee
Okay, we'll do one more time slow
one more time quick and then we should be warmed up
Ready?
Two, hit, hit,
here,
here
Good.
Alright, ready?
Good, one more
That's okay
- [Tina] I screwed up
I kicked first
- [Michael] Up top, be straight, again
One two, here, kick, good
That's about all I can take
- [Tina] Me too
Okay one drink before the wood
Let's get the water
- [Michael] Yeah stay hydrated
And then what we'll do Tina
is we'll do a couple practice runs
and then we'll
go one two and then on three we'll do the break
- [Tina] It's amazing, you do,
you feel like
you get a little nervous
like even though that I think that I just hit
you pretty hard
- [Michael] If you hit the board half as hard as you
were hitting the pads,
honestly you'd go through three of them
really.
I'm serious, I'm not just saying that
So you have what it takes
It's like everything else in life
Everybody has what it takes to do whatever they're
gonna do, it's whether or not they choose
to go through a door that they're unsure of going through.
So it's the brain that psychologically stops us
The body's gonna do whatever the brain says we're gonna do
- [Tina] Right
- [Michael] So that's what board breaking's all about
We do it with kids in class
and the kids love it because they get to break stuff
kids love to break stuff,
but I use it as a tool when I tell the kids
when they're done, you take the board,
you go home, you put it in your room with your belt
that you just got or your certificate, whatever it is
and every time you come up against an obstacle
in your life, taking a test, being fearful of striking out,
being fearful of confronting the situation
remember you were fearful of breaking that board
and you did that
So you can do this
so it's a psychological tool.
- [Tina] You're absolutely right,
and I remember the first time that I
that I broke wood.
There's nothing more I think mentally powerful
than breaking a piece of wood
And that's why I wanted to come in here, you know,
it's right before the new year
and you and I have obviously been talking about
we'll talk about it in a little while after the
wood break, but
I want other people too to have that same benefit of
Even though you have the martial arts experience,
a first degree black belt, you don't need
- [Michael] You don't need any of that,
hell yeah
- [Tina] You don't need to be, okay, alright
- [Michael] And everyone says I could break this
of course you can, we're not breaking concrete
but the idea was if I was to hold this
and use your elbow, use your hand,
or stand up on one leg and throw a kick,
that takes talent.
So it's not as easy as it looks, but it's not difficult
Reason one it's not easy is because we're mortified we're
gonna get hurt,
as long as you do what I tell you to do, you're
not gonna get hurt, it's that simple
So what are we doing, elbow?
- [Tina] Elbow
- [Michael] Okay
Alright so what we're gonna do when you hit,
I just wanna remind you,
give me your arm,
obviously you'll just strike me
sit yourself in a self-defense situation,
this is what you wanna hit, we're gonna be with the bone
I don't want you drive the bone through the board,
but I want you to hit with, to protect your arm
is the muscle, your forearm
So you're gonna hit with this part
What I'm gonna do is I'm gonna be up standing,
I'm gonna hold like this, okay,
and then you're gonna go one, two and, then on three
so basically if this was the board, show me how
you're gonna hit.
- [Tina] Like full power?
One two
- [Michael] And then on three, you blast through it
- [Tina] Do I have to like yell something,
like really like karate-like
- [Michael] That's a good question
Yelling gets your energy out of your body
it's just like when you watch a weight-lifter
or powerlifter when they're doing a bench press
or they're doing a squat, or picking the weight
up off the floor, they're yelling to get their energy
and their momentum, everything to work the same.
So when you go to hit that board, you wanna yell
to get your energy out even more than just using your body
definitely.
And everybody else,
- [Tina] I wanna yell
- [Michael] Okay
- [Tina] I love the acoustics here too so
(laughing)
If we're gonna do it, we're gonna do it,
we're gonna yell
Okay so
- [Michael] So we're gonna go, one, two, and then on three
you're gonna break, right
- [Tina] Okay so one, two, and then full power
- [Michael] I'm gonna be lose,
you try to break now, it's not gonna work
So on three that's I'm gonna lock
when I lock that's when you come through
- [Tina] Well I shouldn't even be thinking that
- [Michael] What if you don't break it?
It's impossible, I promise you it'll break
Because you have so much momentum going into the board
forward momentum, it's gonna break.
If we were doing four or five boards then there's a chance
that you don't, there's a real good chance
if you don't do the proper technique you're just gonna
bounce off the board
But you won't bounce off this.
- [Tina] Okay, here we go
- [Michael] I personally think you can do two or three
- [Tina] Pressure's on, there's a Facebook Live, right
- [Michael] Alright, ready
Let's angle slightly,
you see this point here at the end,
come here face me this way
good, exactly,
okay so on three, it all comes from the hips, from the core
So we're gonna go, one
that's it, two
Okay ready, three
(board being hit)
That's it
That's it
Nice
- [Tina] Wow
- [Michael] Okay that was the trick board,
now I got the concrete (laughing)
that was great that was awesome, see I told you.
Now wait here
everyone's like, okay look at the arm
- [Tina] Still works, it's not broken
wow
that was, that was intense.
That's incredible.
I'm gonna take this piece of wood right now
Wow that was amazing
the adrenaline's just like going through my body right now
But I think one of the things that we talked about is that
when this was really cool
when you do this you feel like
on, climbing Everest is absolutely, you know
an absurdity, but
- [Michael] But this is like a stepping stone
- [Tina] It's like a stepping stone, exactly
so I have to be honesty for a sec
before I broke that piece of wood
I did I had a few doubts in my mind
and the interesting thing is when you actually go to break
that piece of wood, you're totally totally
committed.
- [Michael] There's no backing out at that point
- [Tina] You're totally focused, totally committed,
exactly, so all of the doubt, all of the
you know the voice on your shoulder you know saying
there's no way
So this was really really cool
You know I wanted to put together some sort of
an event with you in January, January 20th
Saturday 2018 and call it Break Through.
- [Michael] That's great
- [Tina] You know and actually have adults do it
I remember when my kids went to board breaking
parties when they were young
but nobody's doing it for like adults
- [Michael] I'm gonna say very rare,
I don't know many other places that do it for adults
for kids, it's huge, it's big
- [Tina] And I also think that this is absolutely
helps you with your mindset in business
because if you think you can't, you can
and so the way that you approach all of your
business challenges, especially for 2018, right
you need to have that kind of mindset,
you need to be totally focused on that goal
and you need to be totally committed to it
so I think that, you know,
opening up events,
and having you speak to you know a whole bunch of adults
as you would the kids before they break wood.
If I can do it this so can anybody else.
- [Michael] And that's not to downplay what you did
or what anybody else does breaking a board
The point is it can get done if you mentally put yourself
in the right mindset, the right frame of mind
- [Tina] It's incredible,
it's absolutely intense
It's intense, it feels great, and boy, I'm really glad
it's been a long time
- [Michael] I know with the kids, and even teenagers
that wanna do board breaking, it's extremely,
it's very powerful, it's extremely motivating
and it just gets all that positive energy flowing.
- [Tina] And if I'm a woman, too, or man, and then
if I say you know what I don't wanna use any of my limbs
how else could you break a board that would be relatively
easy for anybody
- [Michael] Hammer fist
- [Tina] Okay hammer fist
- [Michael] Yeah I don't advocate or advise punching
if you look at how the hand is constructed,
your knuckles are bone, you're basically skin and bone
so when you go to hit that board with your knuckles
what you're doing is you're hitting bone, a hard surface
to a hard surface
What you want to hit when you're breaking wood is a softer
surface to a harder surface to protect yourself
And a hammer fist, which is taking your hands,
making your fist, but instead of using your knuckles
you use the fleshy part of the hands
- [Tina] What about also, too, that breaking it with
the heal
- [Michael] With the kids I do foot stomps all the time
three year old kids here in the school
we just did testing on Saturday for close to 60 kids
and we had kids from the age of three years old all the way
up to teenagers,
we had three year olds doing a foot stomp on the same boards
- [Tina] Three year olds breaking that piece of wood
with the heal stomp
- [Michael] Now what we do with the kids,
because you know their fearful, they're nervous
they thing they're gonna get splinters, their foot's
gonna fall off, so what we do is we take a sharpie marker
and we draw a spider, a happy face, a funny face
and we tell the kids that's where you're gonna step
put your heel right there
And sometimes once doesn't work, two, three, four times
it doesn't work.
Sometimes they go through it the first time
the whole key is when they leave this room
they're leaving this room with this
broken piece of board, broken piece of wood,
that started as one board
You gotta see 'em when you take a three or a four year
old kid and they do this, after they do it
the look on their face is like oh my god, I can't
believe I just did that, it's really cool.
- [Tina] That's great
well Mike thank you very much, it's been an honor today
- [Michael] So yes I'm really excited about the event
- [Tina] January 20th 2018, we'll have some information on
it, but if I can do it, so can you
Have a great day.
