Youtube daily report Apr 26 2018

[♪ INTRO ]

There are lots of good reasons to exercise, like toning those biceps, the satisfaction

of breaking a sweat, or just actually using that gym membership you got when you made

that resolution.

And exercising is good for your general health and wellness.

It can also make you happier.

That's because working out doesn't just affect your body-fat percentage — it can

also change the way you feel by boosting happy brain chemicals and buffering your response

to stress.

And the effects can be so dramatic that many psychologists think regular exercise can help

treat disorders like anxiety and depression.

Lots of research studies over the past decades have drawn a clear link between exercise and

positive feelings.

And the mood-boosting effects of a single bout of exercise can stick around for up to

24 hours, according to some studies.

Part of why you feel so good after exercise, counterintuitive as it might seem, is because

exercise is stressful.

Technically speaking, exercise is a physical stress on the body, which means it activates

the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal or HPA axis—the part of your nervous system that

controls your body's stress response.

One of the things it does is signal production of the stress hormone cortisol.

Cortisol helps produce the physical changes you associate with stress or exercise, like

elevated heart rate.

But it also contributes to a negative feedback loop that eventually shuts down the HPA axis.

Levels of cortisol in your blood rise initially when you're stressed, but once they reach

a certain level, they signal the HPA axis to relax.

And it takes your body some time to reset everything before cortisol levels can rise

again after that happens.

That means exercise can act as a buffer to other stresses that come shortly after, even

if they're psychological rather than physical.

For example, a 2015 study in the journal Psychoneuroendocrinology had 40 young men do what's called the Montreal

Imaging Stress Task.

Basically, you do math problems while a ticker shows your expected performance on a big screen,

which is not exactly relaxing.

The researchers found that when subjects ran on a treadmill for half an hour beforehand,

they had lower cortisol levels during the test.

But the happy feelings associated with exercise don't just come from handling other stresses

better.

Working out increases your levels of endocannabinoids, the neurotransmitters linked to the so-called

'runner's high.'

They decrease anxiety by binding to cannabinoid receptors in the brain—yes, cannabinoid

like cannabis, because they're same receptors the psychoactive compounds in marijuana interact

with.

Endocannabinoids also help rein in an overactive HPA axis, so that's another way exercise

can make you more resilient to other types of stress.

Working out also ups your levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter involved in the regulation

of mood and emotion.

The harder you work, the more serotonin you produce.

That's especially interesting, because low serotonin is linked to disorders like depression

and anxiety.

In fact, many antidepressant medications work by directly or indirectly increasing levels

of serotonin in your brain.

And another chemical, called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF, also goes up

during exercise.

BDNF is like fertilizer for your brain.

It helps neurons grow and form connections with other neurons, and generally improves

brain health.

Researches haven't yet figured the exact link between BDNF and mood, but it might help

by enhancing your neuroplasticity, the flexibility that allows your brain to reorganize when

you learn or experience something.

In depression, neuroplasticity is disrupted, which makes it difficult for the brain to

compensate if important neural circuits become impaired.

So elevating BDNF might help reverse or prevent that.

And, maybe unsurprisingly, antidepressants also tend to increase BDNF levels.

All that said, the similarities between exercise and antidepressants don't mean they're

the same.

The studies that look at the effects of exercise on a molecular level are usually only measuring

things in the short-term — like, right after you hop off the treadmill.

Which doesn't tell you much about how long the boost lasts.

But the research is increasingly showing the long-term benefits of regular exercise, too.

One study, published in 2017, examined the mental health and exercise habits of almost

34,000 Norwegians for more than a decade.

And the researchers found that people who didn't exercise had a 44% greater chance

of developing depression compared to those who exercised 1-2 hours a week.

Other research has found that — at least for mild to moderate depression — exercise

can be just as beneficial as other treatment options.

For example, a 2011 study in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine of over 200 adults diagnosed with

depression found that exercise was just as effective as an antidepressant over a four

month period.

Now, before you go out and swap your Paxil for pilates, it's worth noting that there

were some biases in this study.

For one thing, the subjects were people who responded to an ad about research on treating

depression with exercise, so a lot of them were very pro-exercise in the first place.

The researchers also noticed that some people seemed anti-medication as a treatment.

All of which would have affected the results.

But no matter how exercise compares to other treatment options, research has made it pretty

clear that working out has all kinds of benefits for both your mind and body.

So if you think you might be depressed, definitely see a doctor.

But if you're stressed about a project, or just feeling down in the dumps, getting

a little bit of exercise might help.

Thanks for watching this episode of SciShow Psych!

about that in our episode on why you get that runner's high.

Become a Candidate Campaign Contributions - Duration: 7:33.

Campaign contributions and money, goods or services given to a candidate for his or

her election campaign candidates must open a bank account if they know they

are going to raise funds or spend money so because any contribution or

fundraising that you will be getting for your campaign you must be deposited into

your campaign account however if you know you're not going to raise any funds

or spend any money you do not have to open a campaign accounts trade unions

and corporations will no longer be eligible to contribute to candidates a

contribution includes money goods or services and contributions to candidates

from trades or corporations are prohibited like I mentioned earlier

municipalities and local boards are required to set policies about the use

of resources so for there should be a policy should being place for

candidates to be able to use a school board resources during the campaign

period municipalities or local boards providing information to the public on a

website or other electronic means it's not considered a contribution

candidates can accept contributions from so as a candidate you can accept

contribution from yourself you cannot serve contribution from the spouse

contributions from the candidate and the spouse are considered to have

come from one person and such and when such you when you're receiving

those contributions like I said earlier you have to be mindful of the contribution

limits even if you're getting contributions from yourself and your

spouse the rules for determining where the corporations

are considered to be one contributor are clarified and that is listed on the

slide so for example if one corporation controls the order directly or

indirectly then they are considered to be the same contributor if

the corporations are owned or controlled by the same person or groups of person

either directly or indirectly they are considered to be the

same contributor so you have to keep that in mind they can't accept

contributions from any of the entities listed on the slide so the further

political party from constituency association or a registered candidate in

the federal election and other entities listed on the slide something to keep in

mind when it comes to contributions from volunteers is that if a volunteer is

providing a good or service to you let's say for example you have a relative or a

friend who does web design or they are good event planners and to decide to

contribute this to you for your campaign they can do that but you have to get a

quote from them if the professional leave that service they are providing to

you they would normally provide to a client and try to

do it you have to get a quote and that should be filed in your financial

statement so similar to last election if you are receiving any contribution over

$25 you have to issue a receipt and that money has to be made by either

cheque or money order if goods sold to raise funds as sold

for less than $25 that is considered as a campaign income and not

a contribution anything less than $25 you don't issue a receipt and that

could be received as from an anonymous and you don't have to issue a

receipt but once it exceeds $25 you have to issue a receipt that states the

name of the person that is giving you the money the dates and also the address

of the person because you have to file that information during your financial

statements donations under $25 at fundraising events and not contributions

like I said they are considered campaign income ticket price of fundraising is

the contribution so what do we define as the fundraising fundraising

functions are events or activities held by or on behalf of a

candidate for the primary purpose of raising money so it's important that you

also read the candidates guide because a lot of the information was sharing with

you guys today is all in the candidates guide contribution limits the individual

contribution amount has increased from $750 to $1,200 but the

aggregate amount of 5,000 stays the same however for the City of Toronto there is

an exception for a candidate is running for the role of mayor the

contribution limit is $2,500 candidates are required to inform contributors of

the contribution limits because that is another aspect that candidates have to

be very careful about based on the contribution limit so you have to let

your contributors know the limits so that they don't exceed the limit and a

way you can do this is by having just a line at the bottom of your receipts to

let them know the maximum they can't contribute there is now a limit on the

amount that a candidate for a municipal council can make to their own campaign

and this is known as self funding the limit is based on the number of electors

voting for the office to a maximum of $25,000 per candidates the head of

council is $7,500 plus a 20 cent per elector for the head of Council and for

the for other council officers it's a $5,000 plus 20 cent per elector so the

highest self funding limit that anyone can possibly have is $25,000 so if

the formula works out to a number that is over twenty five thousand dollars the

candidate gets $25,000 because that is the limits if the formula works out to

less than 25 thousand dollars then the candidate gets whatever that formula

works out as a candidate you can borrow a loan from any bank or recognize

lending institution in Ontario if you're going to raise funds or you're

going to receive contribution you must open a campaign account so if you are

going to get a loan that loan will be paid directly into that campaign account

loans may only be guaranteed by the candidate or their spouse while

candidates can open their campaign accounts with their own funds the

candidate cannot loan funds to his or her campaign to kick-start the campaign

with intention of getting it all back you can't receive a loan from a family

member or from any corporate accounts that you may have access to you should

keep in mind the contribution limit for candidates and spouses when you are

going to get a loan because you have to be sure you don't exceed the

contribution limit and also the spending limit and also any interest that the

campaign pays on the loan is a campaign expense.

PIPA 2018 | Tiago Sant'Ana - Duration: 2:33.

I'm Tiago Sant'Ana.

I was born in the Recôncavo Baiano region,

in a city called Santo Antônio de Jesus.

I currently live in Salvador.

My investigation in the visual arts

is connected to the performance field.

I started creating art when I was in university.

I studied journalism,

where I met professor and artist Ayrson Heráclito

who helped me get into the arts

and develop my performances.

I started creating in Cachoeira,

a city in Bahia where I studied.

It was Cachoeira that influenced me

to create and think art

as a political tool, a tool for criticism.

It allows us to talk about our own reality,

instead of other people speaking for us.

The great challenge for me as an artist is exactly this.

It's to create different narratives

that step away from canonical narratives,

which come from an Eurocentric and white perspective.

This is where I'm coming from.

I'm an artist from Recôncavo Baiano,

from the Northeast, I'm black.

My work reflects exactly that.

It reflects the area I'm from

and the identity inscriptions on my body.

My creative process comes from the contact

with people, places and situations.

A Message For You - Duration: 1:37.

Hello

I'm Philip J. Wolfe

I am running for Portland City Council 2018, position 2

For the past 9 months of running my campaign, it has been very challenging, exciting and fun

There is one thing I want you to seriously think about who you want to vote for

Hey, you know, I have faced barriers, oppression, and discrimination through certain forums I have gone to...

There was this certain forum that stuck in my head...

Where all candidates on the panel who witnessed me struggling with barriers which affects my presentation. This impacts my vote

This clearly proves that this is not a fair, transparent and accessible race

All the candidates perfectly saw and knew this, yet, they did nothing but went on with it

There was a candidate, Julia who sat next to me, I wrote a note to her telling her this is not accessible...

Julia nodded in agreement, looked at me and then looked at the audience and went on as if nothing happened. I was like... ouch

Now with that said, I ask you, will these candidates fight for you?

If it was the other way around, I would have stood up and say, hey, this is not accessible, this is not right, using my privilege to empower accessibility

I would. I will fight for you.

Now, you, please, hold me accountable to my promise that I will fight for you

So, please, when you vote, take this in serious consideration. Thank you. Good luck!
