Super Netball celebrates Aboriginal culture with inaugural Indigenous round

In the past we've seen clubs such as the Adelaide Thunderbirds and West Coast Fever wear Indigenous style dresses — but this is the first time there will be an official round with Australia's first nations designs on the outfits of all teams involved in the domestic league.

The NSW Swifts and Giants both unveiled their uniforms in Darling Harbour on Wednesday, with a strong focus on the importance this round has for Indigenous culture, netball as a sport, and broader Australian society.

The Swifts have used artwork by Kamilario/Gamilaraay artist Dennis Golding, the man behind the 2018 South Sydney Rabbitohs Indigenous jersey and last year's Wallabies Indigenous jersey.

The Giants dress, designed by 16-year-old up-and-coming Indigenous netballer Krystal Dallinger, includes links to her previous home in Dubbo, where she resides now in Newcastle, and the rivers that connect those two places.

A talent discovered by Giants defender Sam Poolman during one of her ASPIRE coaching sessions, Dallinger was present with family and school friends at the Giants' private unveiling on Tuesday with a smoke ceremony and various important guests.

Poolman said she could tell the Hunter Sports High student was a creative player the first time they met, but only realised she was creative in an art sense when Dallinger gave her a Giants hat covered in Indigenous art as a thank you for her coaching and mentor support.

"From my first dealings with Krystal I realised she is a very creative player but also the type of kid that just takes every opportunity and wanted to listen and learn, so she definitely stood out," Poolman said.

"And then hearing about her netball journey, how her single mum and her packed up and left their family in Dubbo to find more opportunity 12 months ago, that was special.

Poolman was quick to put Dallinger's name forward as a potential artist when the team first found out Super Netball would be holding an Indigenous round, and the Giants gave her free reign to paint her own story for the dress.

"It not only reflects her netball pathway, but the influence her family has had in the journey, the importance of her community and how we all come together to share a love for netball.

"Us Giants being all about family and the community, it really represented what we're all about. But is it enough?.

Currently, Queensland Firebird Jemma Mi Mi is the only Indigenous player registered in a Super Netball team. In the Australian Netball League (ANL) — Super Netball's feeder competition — Canberra shooter Beryl Friday is also a standalone entity.

Yet 3 per cent of registered participants with Netball Australia identified themselves as Indigenous in 2017 and as of June 30th this year, 5 per cent of NSW's total participants also identified themselves as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.

There are two indigenous players in the U19s team and just one out of 55 players in the Swifts and Giants Super Netball and ANL setup — so the question is, where and why do the numbers drop off?.

Earlier in the year, when the GWS Giants unveiled their 2018 Indigenous AFL jersey, both the Giants ANL and Super Netball teams were present.

Former Diamond and captain of the Giants, Kim Green, said a group of seven or so girls stayed back to have coffee after that event and it's there that Friday gave them a feel for what this round was about.

"She sat with us for about an hour and it was just an impromptu [talk], where we were asking questions about how she felt about reconciliation and what she's gone through and what her family's gone through and getting an understanding of what that means and what makes her as a person today," Green said.

Friday, a proud Kuku Yalanji, Kaantju, Birrigubba and Kamilaroi woman, agrees that the round is a huge step in the right direction for Netball Australia.

Fond of the Giants dress in particular, she believes the way her club went about the design is a great way to include Indigenous culture.

"On a broader scale this is just representation at a national level and just a chance to prove that we're still here and important," Friday said.

"It's a sense of being proud. We're still here, we're still the oldest surviving culture in the world and we're still fighting for equal rights and equal opportunity. "The last woman to play netball for Australia retired 20 years ago.

There's still a massive gap for what we can do for Indigenous pathways and participation rates and this is a great step but it also needs to be used as a platform for further growth in this space.".

In July last year, Netball Australia held it's very first Indigenous high performance camp.

Lead by Netball Australia's Reconciliation Action Plan, 21 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples gathered for three days under the mentor of former Australian Diamonds representatives Marcia Ella-Duncan, Sharon Finnan-White and Diamonds coach Lisa Alexander.

At the time, Netball CEO Marne Fechner said the camp was an opportunity for two-way learnings. "To develop the Diamonds of the future, while also building our understanding of the cultural connections that gives these players such incredible strength," she said.

There are no plans for a 2018 edition — but there are already discussions being held for one in 2019.

Netball NSW did hold a specialist coaching course for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in May of this year at the Mt Druitt Netball Association.

The camps have already had an impact, with Friday crediting the July camp in prolonging her time in the sport.

"I had retired at the end of my Queensland Premier season last year — and that camp convinced me to keep playing," she said.

Netball Australia hopes this weekend's Indigenous round will help attract a whole lot more Indigenous players to the sport as part of their "increased efforts" to provide an "inclusive environment for all Australians".

The organisation also highlighted the theme of this year's NAIDOC week, 'Because of her, we can', as one that makes Netball Australia's recognition of Indigenous culture particularly timely.

Turning to some world cup action now.

Sweden took down Switzerland to make it to the quarterfinals.

And it was quite the nail-biter between England and Colombia.

Lee Seung-jae has the highlights and the heartbreaks from Russia.

The tournament's final round of 16 matches kicked off in St. Petersburg.... where Group

F winners Sweden went head-to-head with Group E runners-up Switzerland.

Sweden... who qualified for the World Cup by beating Italy in the playoffs,... looked

to continue their dream run.

Despite Switzerland controlling possession for most of the match,... the first half ended

goalless.

The deadlock was broken in the 66th minute when Sweden's Emil Forsberg found space on

the edge of the box,... and his strike deflected off Swiss defender Manuel Akanji,... and past

the goalkeeper,... for a 1-0 lead.

The Swedish defense did the rest,.... as Sweden held on to win and advance to the World Cup

Koreas promote peace and prosperity at friendly basketball game - Duration: 2:20.

Let's take a closer look at the inter-Korean basketball games held today.

It was neck and neck all the way, as today's teams were all comprised of players from both

sides of the border More than just about winning; it was a chance

to showcase unity between the two Koreas.

Won Jung-hwan reports.

The 25-member South Korean women's team began their training at 9:00 a.m. at Pyongyang's

( ) Ryugyong Chung Ju-yung Gymnasium... in an atmosphere of excitement and nervous anticipation.

And an hour later, the men's squad entered the same venue to warm up ahead of their game.

The women's game started at around 3:40 p.m. at Ryugyong Chung Ju-yung Gymnasium between

teams made up of a mixture of North and South Korean players, and the men's game started

two hours later.

The arena was packed with over 12-thousand spectators, including the VIPs from both countries.

As the players entered, South and North holding hands,... the crowd clapped and sang chants

representing the two teams' slogan,… "peace" and "prosperity."

In fact, the mixed teams were named "Peace" and "Prosperity",… team Peace wearing white

and Prosperity wearing green.

The first goal was scored by North Korea's Ro Suk-yong to huge applause.

It was all smiles, cheers and fans chatting to each other,... just like any other sporting

event in the world.

Of particular interest in the women's game, was the ability of the North Korean players...

since the two Koreas are planning to form a joint team at the upcoming Asian Games in

August.

Standing out among the North Korean women was Park Jin Ah , only 15 years old.

Park is the tallest player in this tournament at 2-hundred-and-5-centimeters.

The results were close.

In the women's game, team Prosperity won 103-to-102, and for men's side, two teams ended in draw

at 102 points each.

But the day wasn't about the results; it was about harmony -- seeing North Korean players

pass the ball to South Koreans, and South Koreans passing to North Koreans.

It was unity on the basketball court for the first time in 15 years, and there are two

more games set for Thursday.

Inter-Korean efforts to make Koreas green again - Duration: 3:02.

There are many potential inter-Korean projects.

Which is why we've prepared a special series dedicated to turning the spotlight on some

of these promising collaborations.

Here's Shin Se-min with part 1 of 2, focusing on forestation efforts to make both Koreas

greener.

It marks the comeback of a once-jointly run project between the two Koreas.

The two sides once held hands on joint forestry projects in the late 1990s.

But those projects were put on the backburner in 2010 when tensions spiked following a series

of military provocations by North Korea.

However, with the cloud of tensions and threats lifted,... just like many other joint initiatives

now being set up by Seoul and Pyongyang,... this one may end up being a long-term project

between the two.

However, both sides are realistic, considering the reality of North Korea's circumstances.

Some two-point-eight million hectares of forest had been cut down in North Korea as of 2008,…

and that's nearly double the amount of bare land compared to just a decade earlier.

It's so bad that a UK-based risk consulting company assessed North Korea's deforestation

as the third worst in the world in 2012.

"Precisely understanding the situation in North Korea is the most crucial first step.

It's necessary if the two sides are going to be able to make a difference.

However, we believe it will be different this time due to Pyongyang's determination."

That determination,… reflected in its leader Kim Jong-un's efforts to restore a semblance

of environmental care in his country: announcing plan to plant 6-and-a-half billion trees by

2023and even opening up a forestry science school at the elite Kim Il-sung University

in Pyongyang.

The forestry project between the two Koreas, although still very much in its infancy, could

branch out in a number of ways.

Comprehensive projects related to forest-and-agriculture already seem to be coming down the pipeline.

Related businesses' stock prices have shot up over the past couple of weeks,... especially

those involved in forest restoration, cultivating saplings, mineral exploration,... and seed

production.

"We are looking to start with cabbage, corn, broccoli and radish.

Crops like these bring about quick benefits.

especially with some of them being native to our soil.

They are most suitable when we consider the environmental circumstances."

The sentiment this time is more positive,... with North Korea showing a strong inclination

to follow through on its pledges.

Environmentalists here in South Korea have one thing in mind,... improving this fertile

land bestowed to us by our ancestors... and adding a lot more greenery along the way.

U.S. is "not going to provide a timeline" for North Korea's denuclearization: State Dept. - Duration: 2:56.

How long would North Korea need to denuclearize?

One senior American official believes it could be done in a year.

However, with Washington's top diplomat set to head to North Korea, the U.S. State Department

once again clarified.... there's currently NO timeline set for the process.

Lee Ji-won gets us up to speed with the developments.

The U.S. continues to say it will not put a timeline on North Korea's denuclearization.

Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday,...

State Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert said she was aware of the timeline given by

"some individuals",... but simply said the U.S. government will not be providing one.

Those comments would appear to be in line with what Secretary Mike Pompeo told CNN last

week -- that there would be no timeline, but Washington would continue to monitor the North's

progress.

Those who *have said there's a timeline include National Security Advisor John Bolton, who

said in a TV interview last weekend that it would be possible for the U.S. to dismantle

the North's weapons programs within a year.

In terms of expectations for U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's third visit to Pyongyang

that's set to start later this week, Nauert said they will be continuing talks on following

up on the joint statement signed at the June 12th summit between U.S. President Donald

Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Singapore.

She said former nuclear negotiator and the U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Sung Kim

had a good series of meetings with his North Korean counterpart in planning Pompeo's visit.

She added the U.S. has been very clear in terms of its expectations,... which remain

unchanged from the Singapore summit.

And compared to just last year, Nauert said significant progress has been made.

"We're in a good spot today.

The secretary's looking forward to having meetings with his North Korean counterparts

and we go into this eyes wide open, but nevertheless we've made a lot of progress in the past year."

While the exact calculations have not yet been done, Nauert said the U.S. delegation

will be spending a "good bit" of time in Pyongyang, with at least a day-and-a-half of meetings

planned.

Progress with Pyongyang was also reaffirmed by President Trump.

He tweeted on Tuesday that talks with North Korea were "going well",... adding that there

have been no rocket launches or nuclear tests for eight months.

While slamming the Democrats and what he calls the "fake news" media for their complaints,

Trump said that,... if it weren't for him, the U.S. would now be at war with the North.

The tweet caused a stir at the White House on Tuesday,... with Press Secretary Sarah

Huckabee Sanders being quizzed on whether America's goal had changed from denuclearizing

Pyongyang to avoiding war.

Sanders insisted the goal remains the same as it has always been, denuclearization,...

adding the U.S. will continue pushing for that... and working closely with North Korea.

S. Korea's financial stability improves with foreign exchange reserve hitting landmark $400 bil. - Duration: 2:53.

Korea's economic growth has been slowing down in recent months..... with a sudden drop in

exports.

But we do find some solace in foreign exchange reserves hitting a landmark figure.

Oh Soo-young explains further.

South Korea's foreign exchange reserves topped 400 billion dollars for the first time in

June,... bolstering the country's financial stability.

The Bank of Korea said Wednesday the country's reserves grew one-point-three billion dollars

from the previous month,... to 400-point-three billion dollars.

The record-breaking figure comes more than seven years after the country's foreign reserves

surpassed the 300 billion dollar threshold in 2011.

Korea had reserves of just four billion dollars back in 1997 during the Asian Financial Crisis.

A bank official said the recent surge was largely due to a steady current account surplus,...

and also cited constant gains in assets held in foreign currencies.

Securities holdings alone reached 367 billion dollars -- up by one-point-five-six billion

dollars on-month.

"Amid concerns of a downturn in exports, consumption and investment,... experts say the country's

burgeoning foreign reserves are an encouraging sign of financial resilience,... as they translate

to a growing ability to service foreign debt."

South Korea's short-term external debt in 1997 was roughly three times its foreign exchange

reserves.

The ratio came to 75 percent during the global financial crisis,... and fell to just 30-point-four

percent in March this year.

"We have more than enough foreign reserves to pay back short term debt should they want

their dollars back.

If the investors have confidence that Korea has enough dollars to pay them back, paradoxically,

they're less likely to ask for their money back."

However, the expert says the country shouldn't grow complacent, but rather work to maintain

the right balance of foreign reserves in the vault.

"There's sort of an ideal level to guard against currency crisis but not excessivereserves

so that the government has enough money to make welfare payments, infrastructure and

so on...

Having a lot of foreign currency reserves does make the Korean government more vulnerable

to changes in exchange rates.

When the dollar strengthens, it's good for the BOK because their assets go up but if

the dollar weakens then it's bad for BOK as the value of their assets go down..."

Some experts are also concerned that there may be limits to increasing foreign currency

holdings,... when Korea begins disclosing its market intervention records next year,

following pressure from the U.S. and IMF, so as to avoid being labeled as a currency

manipulator.
