Super Monaco GP Genesis/Mega Drive [Review] | Nostalgia Nerd - Duration: 6:53.

1989, the 48th Monnaco Grand Prix.

77 laps and a total race distance of 256 kilometres.

Annndd of course, James Hunt swearing on the race commentary....

*And all I can say to that is b*ll shit*

*Anyway...*

This was the glory days of formula one with Aryton Senna and Alan Prost leading the pack

in McLaren Honda's, Nigel Mansell was on his way up, but would find himself retired due

to gear box issues.

Out of this exciting era would come Super Monaco Grand Prix on Sega's X Board Hardware

in 1989.

This was one of the first pace paced, realistic depictions of formula one in an arcade game,

even including a rear view mirror to truly place you in the cockpit.

But the gameplay was still very arcade based, after a 45 second qualifying race you had

to race with the best of them to progress.

Interestingly, although the track featured many features of the real life Monaco, the

layout was in fact completely different.

But it was inevitable that home ports would appear on both the Master System and the Mega

Drive.

The Master System is a very different beast, placing you in a third person perspective

and failing to capture the true excitement of the arcade cabinet.

The Mega Drive game however, was a treat for the senses and truly captured my imagination,

taking the controller of my friends Mega Drive in 1991.

I was a big fan of Formula One at the time, and the nearest I'd experienced to that point

was on my Tyco Racing track.

But this was something else.

This was like being in an F1 car and participating in a real event.

Released in 1990 by Sega, the game borrows very heavily from the arcade with it's Monaco

GP mode, but graces us with a new World Championship featuring many of the tracks from the era,

although in much simpler forms.

The 16 bit conversion also lacks most the of scenery and detail found in the arcade,

but when your flying along at these speeds, who the hell cares.

The USA course has some of the sharpest turns, but in my opinion, also holds the best background

scenery of the championship.

This Championship edition was then released into arcades on the Sega Mega Tech system

board, which essentially duplicates the Mega Drive hardware into an arcade environment,

where players can purchase time credits rather than lives.

After selecting your choice of transmission, you can begin....I dunno, seeing a pixelated

Mega Drive pad on screen, always attracted me.

Your controller was in your hand, yet it's also on screen.

IT WAS LIKE MERGING REALITIES...

How did the Mega Drive know what your pad looked like?

What else did it know?

So, you begin the season in the lowly Minarae team, based on the real life Minardi, and

I love these little power output graphs.

They probably meant sod all, but all they had to do was set the scene, and it's these

little details which separated the 16 bit games apart from what we'd seen before.

We've got some familiar sounding and looking teams and racers here, and after selecting

your rival, you can then appreciate their quip and get down to some racing.

Beat your rival twice, and you'll be offered the chance to drive for them, with the loser

banished to an even lower race team as a punishment.

If you win a season you'll get the chance to join McLaren.... or should I say Madonna,

after which you can then begin the next season, defending your championship.

In this defensive season you inevitably lose to begin with and are dropped to a lower team.

In this case Dadan... and so begins the challenge to get back to the top.

Do it again and the game is beaten.

*The game takes a little while to get used to, but once you have, and you get on board

with the decent teams, things only get easier, mainly because, just like real life - well,

in the 90s at least, before all the competitive rules - their cars are much, much, better.*

The game was very well reviewed on release, and I can understand why.

*Apart from the horrific password system, which is frankly.... horrific*

This was one of my first tastes of actually feeling part of the racing experience.

From the shifting engine sounds to the moving steering wheel... *alright, maybe not the

engine souonds*.

It's the perfect balance between simulation and arcade racer, only really being beaten

by the second game, which was to all intents and purposes very similar.

Those race tracks may look simple and outdated now, and the simulated corners feel like you've

been spun off a round-about but back in 1991, but all of this felt as good as it needed

to.

This felt like the Monaco track and going through that tunnel, no matter how simplified

was a mind swelling experience.

I could have been controlling a virtual car on a real track for all I knew.

*You can even smash over the flag man, and with the right cheat, lift your own head at

the end of arcade mode, rather than the cup... it's all about these little, absolutely mental

touches*

It's inclusion on Mega Games 3 is more than justified, and although it's not everyone's

cup of tea.

It's one of the games which made the Mega Drive feel like a must have device back in

the day.

Note 8 Reveal, Shot by Linus! He's... Terrible - Duration: 11:17.

Oh, this is already not going very well. So, I'm here for the Samsung Note 8 launch. I forgot my shaving supplies

and they didn't have a budget to send me with a camera person, so I have to figure out how to put this camera together.

Oh, I wish Brandon was here.

Yeah

[Intro Music]

The Corsair One features a compact form factor that is fast, quiet,

and, you guessed it, compact! Check it out through Amazon or Newegg at the links below

Ok, well... at least the camera will look good even if the operator doesn't?

I think I've got the audio working

I'm not sure. The audio level monitoring is here, but... I'd love to play around with this but in my infinite wisdom

I didn't bring a charger for the batteries. So I've got what I've got and besides

I've got to be over at the event in like

Oh great, don't have a charger for that either

Ok so hopefully this sounds ok because otherwise I'm screwed

I still don't know exactly what today's format will be so right now

I'm just lamenting that I didn't bring a better way to carry this stupid camera around with me all day

This thing is very heavy, and I'm filled with regret right now, but on a positive side Ubisoft followed me on Twitter

I'm famous!

Rate my skills with... hold on, you're out of focus. Oh, man

I can't even use the phone! "Rate my skills on how to... oh wait, I don't know how to use the phone"

Rate my skills on operating the Red camera out of 5

1.2

Ah, 1.

Hahahaha

Oh my God, there's so many stairs, this thing is so heavy

Fortunately for everybody who's with me, I've resolved to suffer in silence.

All the silence That's pretty good

I got Austin's approval Let's not be rash here and say approval

let's not throw words like that around. Also you know you can zoom in, right, like you can do like something

Oh, I could oh right, I do a little, right, this is a zoom lens

Yeah, so you can do it like that and get actual proper 8k. Oh, there you go. There we go, 8K Wi-Fi password

Booyah!

Thank you everybody

Thank you

[clapping]

Oh man, I finally pull out the camera, and it's over. And now I get to haul it down all the stairs

It's a good thing I got all that great footage

during the presentation.

In 8K.

You've got to be kidding me... Access to the product demo space... Wait, what?

Hey guys, we can just wait here for a bit

We're trapped on the stairs

Well come on, like, this is a concern

I'm trying to get me walking on the crazy water display, and I can't even get my SSD to mount. Come on, Red!

There's one thing that is epic. An epic fail.

Wow, this is a super trippy... Oh, I'm not apparently allowed to be out here. Well, everyone else was walking on it

It is a freakin zoo in here

Try and get some... oh, you have gotta be kidding me

Austin's Mag isn't mounting now, either.

I'm gonna have a new Red rant pretty soon. The last one was: it's expensive

The next one's gonna be: it doesn't work when you need it to work.

Your Mag's not detecting, dude What? It's not?

It's really broken? Look! No, I'm not even joking

It's gotta be your camera, dude. Well, I mean, that's not good news, either.

Holy crap, this is, like, terrible.

Shoot it on an iPhone, man. I'm not using it and just shoot it on the iPhone. Yeah

After four minutes of detecting

We have SSD. Okay...

Time to get some footage before I breathe on it too hard.

Alright, so let's get some initial handling impressions here

Well, Bixby is still there, so if you were hoping that wasn't then

you were hoping wrong

In fact one of the big things they were talking about is how you can use Bixby to essentially program like voice-activated macros

Which does sound kind of cool, although I'd have to spend some time with it to evaluate exactly how well it works.

Like the Note 7, the holdability is

much better than previous Notes for me, thanks to the rounded shape along the edges.

I don't know how people do this whole, like, filming yourself, like I'm back here trying to

hold it up and keep it in focus. This is impossible.

Austin, you just wrecked my shot again, bro. I was trying to show off the Bixby button

Wow, what?

Wow!

I always get such a kick out of people who carry around cleaning cloths for phones, because, like, I carry around a cleaning cloth

It's called my shirt

sucka

Look at that... okay... Well... It didn't do a great job. Yeah, I think you're just making it worse

Wow, I think it's... is that scratched? Hahahahaha

Oops, I didn't even drop it! Look, they even installed Linus drop-proof floors. It's carpet!

So we're actually going to lunch with Samsung, but they're giving out bag lunches

So I don't really need the lunch, but check this out. It's like a it's like a Happy Meal

You don't really want the food, but it's the goodie that's important. It's got S-Pens inside.

Okay, I can't find my S-Pen! Our Uber's here...

S-Pen...

What is this? You've got to be kidding me... Hahaha

That's not, wait, what? That's not an S-Pen.

Well one of them's an S-Pen, it's got like a little plastic cover on it, but the other two are just pencils.

Well now I feel like an idiot for shooting anything back at the event, this place is way cooler, check this out.

And Eber's here too, and we've got our own phones to run around and shoot B-Roll with

So as long as the camera's working, then hopefully I'll get some more footage here.

Good news, the camera is working and

the more serious setting is gonna bring about a more serious tone to the rest of the video.

Let's talk about some actual impressions here.

So, number one: Ergonomics. A lot of what was good about the Note 7 returns.

Like the Note 7, this is a phablet

that is actually holdable even with my tiny lady hands.

Part of that is due to the fact that the sides are

curved on both the front and the back, and another part of it is actually due to this flat

part that they've got on both the left and right side.

It gives it a little bit more grip around the edges, and I personally really like the change.

Other changes: The screen. It's still the 18 1/2 by 9 aspect ratio that I personally, absolutely

loved on the Galaxy S8, just more of it.

Whether you're scrolling through

you know, long walls of text or your Twitter or Instagram feed, or

watching wide aspect ratio content like Brandon's recent review of the Red Weapon 8K camera

There's just more of it to love. I'm a huge fan.

I absolutely love the taller size. With that said, it does affect ergonomics a little bit

And I'm probably not the only one who was really hoping that Samsung was going to deliver an under-screen fingerprint sensor on this guy

rather than the one at the back, because it takes me a couple shuffles to get up there to unlock the phone.

Another improvement on the screen, though, is the always-on functionality. So, I checked this out on the show floor

But now you can actually create up to a hundred pages of notes just on your lock screen

in a way that consumes very little power and allows you to quickly jot down like a tracking number or phone number or

whatever else the case may be

The camera is already generating some mixed feedback. The telephoto lens which has a 2X optical zoom

does not capture images that are nearly as sharp as the wide-angle

but, for me personally

I don't mind the approach because

With dual capture, you've got the option to do the whole, like, adjust the background blur boka thing in post

Which is neat if you're into that kind of artsy stuff, but it's really not my bag, but, for me

What's cool about dual capture is the fact that I don't really have to compromise. So, I can try and capture the close-up

but if it kind of looks soft

or doesn't look as good or I got the framing kind of wrong, then at least I can fall back to the

wide-angle shot and know that I've captured the moment, which is far more important for me when it comes to cell phone cameras.

On the subject of things that matter to me

Styluses generally not so much

The Note 7 was my first Note device

and I had precious little time with it before the recall, so I never really have gotten in the habit of using a stylus

But apparently this one's

better than ever with more pressure levels and lower latency

So I look forward to, you know, kind of tinkering around with it over the next couple of weeks while I work on my full review.

And on that subject

Bixby voice has finally launched in Canada.

So when I did my S8 review, Bixby seemed pretty freaking pointless, just a

regrettably un re-mappable button on the side that I would always hit by accident, and that would annoy me.

Hopefully, I'll change my mind. Their pitch for it is like pretty hardcore, they're like "yeah, you can change your Wi-Fi settings

You can adjust your screen brightness, it can to do everything."

But that remains to be seen. I've been promised that I can talk naturally to my device and it will behave in a way that

I'd expect, a lot of times

and it's never really come through. But one thing that's gotten my attention is apparently the ability to program Bixby with like

Macros

So you can tell it to take a picture

Save it to a particular album and open up a photo editing program, or something like that.

IS NVIDIA RUINING YOUR PERFORMANCE? - Duration: 9:00.

It feels like every driver update we get from Nvidia

"NVIDIA RUINED MY FPS IN GAME X WITH DRIVER YYY.ZZ

"AND (x3) PLANNED OBSOLESCENCE!"

But is there really any rhyme or reason to these claims?

The simple VPN app, start your seven day free trial

At the link in the video description.

Now before we really get into this,

I wanna clarify that I've been a LONG time skeptic

When it comes to Nvidia and AMD conspiracy theories

They're almost always, half-baked, fanboy purchase decision

Reinforcing rants and frankly, they make my brain hurt.

Seriously, Jake tried a LOT of different search terms,

All the way from "Nvidia driver hurts performance" to

"Nvidia broken halp plsss" and not even one post

Contained concrete evidence of a legitimate decrease in

Performance over time.

I mean, don't get me wrong, there were a lot of posts about

The 375.86 driver's memory clock issue, BUT,

No one has gathered sufficient, or really any evidence

Showing that Nvidia has purposely harmed performance of older cards

To force their users to upgrade through a driver update.

So, I decided to painstakingly assign Jake, the task of testing it ourselves.

First, we needed to pick some games.

We wanted a mix of ones that use only standard features of the DirectX API,

And at least one example that uses Nvidia's proprietary GameWorks.

Then, to ensure we weren't missing out on a particular architecture that got knee capped,

Because it was like "Too good!" compared to the new thing they needed to sell,

We grabbed a flagship from every generation,

From GTX 680, all the way to 1080 Ti.

With games and cards selected, the next challenge was drivers.

We can't test all of them.

So we eventually settled on the drivers one release after the launch of each card that we used,

And, the most recent one available at this time.

So the idea then, was that this would show us a clear progression over time.

Is Nvidia improving, ignoring, or outright harming the performance of older cards

Once the new generation comes out?

So, driver by driver, card by card, Jake ran almost 200 rounds of benchmarks,

Collecting three metric ass tons of data, then he sat down to organise it, into some charts,

...aaaand the results are astonishingly boring.

The most recent release seems to be a turd across the board, so there's that, but,

In general, not only did performance not decrease,

There were small but noticeable increases over time,

In almost every case.

Due to the minuscule nature of these improvements,

It's hard to see where they actually start and end so,

We're not much closer to a clear picture of Nvidia's internal policy

With respect to product software support,

But it does at least tell us that Nvidia has never rolled out a,

"Sandbag edition" driver.

Which DOESN'T mean they've never rolled out a bad driver.

375.86 hurt performance, and SLI issues seem to come and go like,

Shadow, from Final Fantasy VI.

So, what is going on then? Where are people getting these ideas?

WE THINK the perception mostly stands from this:

When a new game launches, older GPU's don't get the full optimisation treatment,

The way that the current ones would.

That means, that you might run into situations,

Where older cards with more raw power might be beat by newer ones with less.

Textbot showcased this in their articles on Project CARS and Battlefield 1 performance,

Which are linked down in the video description,

Where you can see a GTX 970 outperforming a 780 Ti.

And, there's another major factor, the tech.

Not all graphics solutions are the same, the goal with every new generation is to tailor it

For the features of the game engines that are in wide use, or, right on the horizon.

Examples would be Nvidia specific features like, HairWorks, or general rendering techniques

Like HBAO+ ambient occlusion.

Older silicon doesn't handle either of these things as well, because,

They either didn't exist when it was being designed, or Nvidia guessed it wouldn't be widely implemented.

The work of designing a GPU, starts YEARS before you'll be able to buy one.

I mean if you were in the PC scene a few years back,

You might remember this happening with tesselation.

Nvidia cards were, and still seem to be, MUCH faster at rendering tessellated meshes.

To such a degree, that AMD had to add "AMD Optimised Tessellation" to their drivers.

Basically removing a bunch of it.

And when CryTek controversially put an overkill amount of tessellation in Crysis 2,

It completely tanked the ability of similarly performing AMD cards,

compared to their Nvidia counterparts.

So, in this case, your older hardware literally wasn't made for the questionable decisions

Of game devs in newer games.

So in conclusion then, from our testing, Nvidia does NOT appear to be slowing down older cards

To encourage upgrades.

The better performance from newer cards probably has more to do with their engineers,

NOT just sitting down on their ass all day, I mean look at it from their perspective,

if they don't optimise their **** from generation to generation,

Jensen, will yell at them.

What DOES seem like it's happening, is that newer game features

Aren't getting as much optimisation for older cards.

But I also think it's a little unreasonable to get too mad at Nvidia for this.

They support cards as far back as the 8000 series on Windows 10,

and while they might not perform clock for clock the same as they used to,

They simply weren't built for modern rendering technologies.

So if you want bleeding edge performance, you need to be on the bleeding edge in terms of hardware.

Whether or not that's worth bleeding your wallet dry, that one's up to you.

Intel Stock Cooler on STEROIDS? - Duration: 9:33.

Every Non-K or X processor from Intel comes packed with this little guy right here,

and I mean little.

Whether it's been by removing fin area or

eliminating performance-enhancing copper slugs,

Intel has been

"costing down" their box cooler for years.

Years!

I mean, to be clear, it is adequate for default operation,

but it would easily be overwhelmed by an overclocked processor.

But what if

Intel made a "stock" heatsink

specifically for K-series and X-series overclockable chips?

Well,

it turns out,

they do!

And it looks pretty much like what you'd expect if

Intel's cooling engineers

- the same ones what bring you this -

were terminally unimaginative

and,

we're told, "well, make

something like that, but that performs a bit better."

So it looks about like the stock cooler on 'roids.

But did the treatment give it better performance, or just

mood swings, fatigue, and a deflated sex drive?

Let's find out!

♪ Introduction music ♪

The Be Quiet! Dark Basspro 900's modular design supports a variety of different layouts and configurations.

Click on the link in the video description to learn more.

Okay, silly intro aside taking the intel

thermal solution

TS-15a out of the box it looks pretty much like somebody took three or so

regular intel stock heat sinks and

glued them together the push mounting pins remain for that easy

Installation and the fan clips on to the top exactly the same way it normally would

Looking more closely at it. Though reveal some differences, so the regular heatsink uses an aluminum

Extrusion process to create the required profile that's great for keeping costs down

But not so great for having thin higher performance fins

So for the TS-15a which will be calling roy D from now on each pin

Here is actually its own

Bent piece of metal that meets at the center

So you can kind of see it here around a copper slug

This increases performance

but also increases manufacturing cost

but how much additional performance

does it actually get you and can you slap a decent overclock on your processor using it?

And then perhaps more importantly at this price

Does it make any sense to actually go and buy this product compared to

larger and

probably

better Coolers? Like the Cooler Master hyper 212 Evo

They are available for as little as only two dollars more

To test this we first ran a couple of other heat sinks on an intel core i7

7700 K at both the stock speed of 4.5 Gigahertz Turbo and A

Modest 4.8 gigahertz overclock that was mostly there to increase its heat output

The stocks and curve was used for these tests

And we also used the thermal compound that comes pre applied to these things out of the box

and

yeah, it couldn't quite do it add the stock speed the roided Cooler was able to pull off a

warm

81 degrees Celsius, but with our

fairly

Reasonable overclock it throttled hard

reaching a hundred degrees

Celsius in about 30 seconds the only thing in our test table here that

performed worse

Than the Roi D Cooler was actually the regular intel stock cooler which immediately throttled

So badly that we just cancelled the test out of pity for both our board and our chip

You know what it's not all terrible news though. I mean it was able to maintain

4.7 Gigahertz in the Point 1 volt offset test which

wasn't really fair because

That makes this chip more like a space heater than a room heater get it cuz like outer space

Anyway, and with a bit of tweaking we were actually able to get this processor up to a stable

4.9 Gigahertz without it thermal throttling

That is to say upstairs where the temperatures are about 5 degrees cooler

Here it is

Definitely thermal throttling, but it's still managing about 4.8. Gigahertz sustained at

100 degrees ok then so it performs a bit worse than a hyper 212 Evo

dome product video over right

wrong if I'm investing

33 of my hard-earned dollars plus shipping

We're going to dig deep

What about a comparison to amd's Cooler? That's

Sort of a stocks cooler, but you also have to buy it separately

Now the easiest way to see how these stack up would be to use the same

heat load of the Same cPU

but unfortunately that isn't possible given that there aren't currently any

Am4 to LGA 1151 Mounting adapters or Vice-Versa

so we devised a

Completely over engineered and clever plan to use an intermediary

reference Cooler that was compatible with both or

Because we're thorough like that. We actually used a total of

three references

and

Looking at the results

Amd is

The winner for non stock stock Cooler performance although only by a slim

5% over royalty and at 12 percent more expensive

It looks like it's pretty much coming down to whether it's worth it to you to pay

seven percent for that RGB lighting

Although there is one other thing that really differentiates them as well the noise level once the intel fan kicks in it

Reaches about 40 decibels which isn't overly loud

But the amd wraith Cooler comes in at 38 decibels, so you think okay?

That's pretty similar uh ah the amd cooler is at a low frequency

So tuning it out is easy kind of like a clothes dryer in the other room the intel cooler on the other hand is

High-pitched and

very distracting kind of like your boss which

Hey

Anyway at this point?

You might assume that we aren't big fans of paying

Aftermarket dollars for oem design and that we think buying the intel thermal solution ts

50 I would be super dumb and that would be correct great work detective

This is Omar's Cherrywood

Earbuds they are as I mentioned

Handcrafted from natural cherry wood with handmade details, and they've got all the normal features you'd expect from headphones as well

including a built-in microphone with one button function control coaxial dual driver speakers a

45-degree Oblique Angle Design and

It comes prepackaged with three pairs of Ultra soft Silicon Ear pads and small

Medium and large sizes these things are 50 bucks on Amazon and us residents can use code oh earbuds to save

40% which would make them

$30 and these are absolutely ignoring the

wood

handcrafted miss these things sound killer for 30 bucks like

Unbelievable, so go check them out at the link below

Music Plays

Who oh, who, oh,

I feel so unsure

As I take your hand and lead you to the dance floor

As the music dies, something in your eyes

Calls to mind the silver screen

And all its sad good-byes

I'm never gonna dance again

Guilty feet have got no rhythm

Though it's easy to pretend

I know you're not a fool

Should've known better than to cheat a friend

And waste this chance that I've been given

So I'm never gonna dance again

The way I danced with you

Never without you girl

Time can never mend

The careless whispers of a good friend

To the heart and mind

Ignorance is kind

There's no comfort in the truth Pain is all you'll find

I'm never gonna dance again Guilty feet have got no rhythm

Though it's easy to pretend I know you're not a fool

should've known better than to cheat a friend And waste the chance that I've been given

So I'm never gonna dance again The way I danced with you oh yeah, yeah,

Now that your gone and you had to leave me alone

Tonight the music seems so loud I wish that we could lose this crowd

Maybe it's better this way if we hurt each other with the things we wanna' say

We could have been so good together We could have lived this dance forever

But no one's gonna dance with me Please stay

And I'm never gonna dance again Guilty feet have got no rhythm

Though it's easy to pretend I know you're not a fool

Should've known better than to cheat a friend And waste the chance that I've been given

So I'm never gonna dance again The way I danced with you Never without you girl
