5 Hispanic Books || TBR Sampler - Duration: 6:41.

Bibliophiles of the internet, my name's Adriana and today I'm here to talk about five Hispanic or Latinx books

books that I would like to prioritize in the coming months.

To give you a little background on this video, Hispanic Heritage month is coming up,

September 15th to October 15th, and notoriously in the past, because I just suck at keeping track of things,

I can never remember when it's coming up.

So because our heritage month spills over into two months and because the dates slightly differ

from year to year, what ends up happening is I make reading plans for September and October,

and it's not until halfway through the month that I realize it's the time of my people and I want to represent.

But then I have books that I'm really excited for that I don't want to set aside.

So then I only end up reading maybe one or two Hispanic books.

Honestly...it's stupid. Because Hispanic Heritage Month means so much to me.

I need to do better. I need to plan better. I need to stop making excuses.

So you know what? 2017 Adriana is on it.

In fact several months ago, I made a list on my phone of just a ton of unread Hispanic or Latinx

books I have on my shelves or my devices. And I said to myself, "You know what? I'm gonna take it to the next level."

"I'm not just gonna read these things during Hispanic Heritage Month."

I'm going to read pretty much nothing but Hispanic books for all of September and all of October—

—because I have that many choices.

That's why today I'm giving you a small sample and sharing with you five Hispanic books

I would like to read in the next couple of months.

The very first book I thought of when making this list was "Shadowshaper" by Daniel José Older,

which I bought a million years ago when it was a Kindle Daily Deal for, like, less than a buck.

This is a YA urban fantasy inspired by Latinx and Caribbean legend.

It's about a character named Sierra Santiago, who discovers a secret supernatural order of people

called Shadowshapers, who can connect with spirits via music, stories, paintings, and art.

I believe she discovers her family is somehow connected to this order,

which is actually under attack by an interloper. And it's up to Sierra to find a way to save her family's

past, present, and future.

This story ticks off a lot of boxes for me, and it just sounds really great.

The next book I would like to read is "When the Moon Was Ours" by Anna-Marie McLemore.

I do own her first book, "The Weight of Feathers," and I know her newest release, "Wild Beauty,"

is going to be out soon. So I really could have chosen any one of them. But I'm gravitating towards

"When the Moon Was Ours," because I know this story is explicitly queer, because the two main characters

are a couple and one of them is trans.

From what I remember, this story is a mixture of magical realism and romance.

It's about these two characters, one is a girl who has roses growing out of her wrists,

and the other is a mysterious boy who paints moons and hangs them along the trees.

Apparently there are these four sisters in town who are rumored to be witches,

and they want the roses from Miel's wrists, because they believe the scent of these roses

will cause anyone to fall in love, and they will do anything to make sure she gives them up.

I've heard so many fantastic things about this book, and I think I just intrinsically trust this author

even though I've never read anything of hers, because she's written so many great online pieces

about the connection between Latin America and magical realism, how we use that to explore

family, oppression, and pain, and you can tell she just gets it.

Speaking of queer Latinx fiction, my next choice is "The Gods of Tango" by Carolina de Robertis.

This is more of a literary, historical fiction type story, and the main character, Leda, arrives in Buenos Aires

in 1913, with nothing but a suitcase and her father's violin, only to find out that

the man she came to marry is dead.

With no means of returning home and nowhere else to go, she finds herself on the street,

and she's seduced by the world of the tango; she wants to play tango music.

But to do so, she must disguise herself as a man, and the longer that carries on,

the more the lines between her identity and her disguise begin to blur.

I'm really excited for this book, because it's a cross-dressing story where the character actually gains

a new understanding of their gender and their sexuality *because* of their disguise.

I actually tend to avoid cross-dressing stories because they fail to acknowledge the existence of trans people,

the existence of other genders, because they completely neglect to explore what it means

to present as another gender and how that would impact a character's sense of self—

—which just makes no sense.

But as I've said before, I first heard about this book when the author herself came to my University

and she read from this story. She talked about her experiences, her identity, her inspiration,

what she was hoping to accomplish with this book.

So I know exactly what the expect—and I expect great things.

My next choice is middle grade and also historical fiction,

and that is "The Red Umbrella" by Christina Diaz Gonzalez.

This story is set in 1961 Cuba, two years after the Communist revolution, and the main character, Lucia,

lives a relatively peaceful life. But it's around this time that the effects of the revolution are finally

taking shape and things are becoming much more oppressive and dangerous.

In order to keep them safe, Lucia's parents decide to sent her and her younger brother to the United States—

—by themselves.

I actually bought this book a few years ago, and I've never read it because there's never really a reading mood

where you WANT to confront this devastating of a story—a story that's about loss of family,

loss of identity, loss of home.

But I'm gonna do it. I will.

And the final book I wanna mention in this video is one that's actually in the mail right now on its way to me,

and that is also middle grade. It is "The Epic Fail of Arturo Zamora" by Pablo Cartaya.

This story is about 13 year-old Arturo Zamora, who usually spends his summer washing dishes

in his abuela's restaurant.

But this summer, there's been a sneaky, smarmy land developer lurking around

who not only wants to shut down his abuela's restaurant, but who wants to make a lot of changes

that will negatively impact Arturo's family and community.

So the story's really about him discovering the power of poetry and protest.

I mean, this book was practically written for me. It has everything I've ever wanted in a story.

And Hispanic middle grade is my literal favorite thing on this planet, so I KNOW I'm going to love this.

So those are only five of the Hispanic of Latinx books I hope to read over the next couple of months.

If you have any thoughts on any of the books I mentioned in this video today, please feel free to share

them in the comments below. Or if you have any more recommendations for #ownvoices Hispanic fiction,

hit me up!

So a lot of you have requested us to play blindfolded table tennis, so I guess we will

have to give it a shot!

And the way we are going to do this is that we have 5 different serves.

Number 1: Normal serve Number 2: High serve

Number 3: Fast serve Number 4: Backspin serve

And for the fifth and final one we have: A Special Surprise.

And the one who is playing blindfolded has to guess the serve.

This is going to be very interesting, don't you think Emil?

Emil?

Let's go.

Are you ready?

Yea, I'm ready!

Have you found the table?

Yea!

That was the high one!

Or was it the backspin one?

No?

That was the high one.

Which one?

High one!

That was the normal one!

I was pretty close!

You went to wrong side!

Yea!

That was the fast serve.

Ow!

That was not a serve!

What was that one?

That was the special one!

Yup, exactly.

That's not fair!

Good one.

That was the high one.

Yup.

Was it all?

That was all.

That was hard!

Okay, is the contestant ready?

Yea.

Are you sure you can't see anything?

Yuupp, nothing!

Okay, let's go!

Alright, let's go.

I was close, I was close!

It hit my hand.

You were pretty close.

That was a..

That was a.. high one!

Yes!

Correct!

Wait, wait!

I have to find the table!

Ok, it's here.

Wooow!

It felt like it would go here but it went here.

That was the fast one!

Wow.

That was a normal one.

Was I close?

You were pretty close.

Yea, it felt like it went a bit…

Okay..

WHAT!?

How many balls was it?

Three or?

That was one, one ball!

No way!

Ye, ye, yea!

That was at least two balls.

That was the normal one.

No, that was the special one!

Okay.

So that's zero.

That was a backspin.

That was a backspin.

You got all of them right I think.

Okay.

That's pretty good.

Nice.

But I didn't hit any of them!

Well..

At least you tried!

Well that didn't go too well at all, but at least you guessed them right.

Yea, playing blindfolded table tennis is so much harder than it looks like.

It's nearly impossible to react to the sound of the ball in time.

Yea, trying it out with your friends, it was a lot of fun, but..

It's really really hard!

What was that!?

Was I close?

Thanks for watching guys!

SUEZ Collaborative Tour #4, Bordeaux (France) - Duration: 3:03.

Jean-Luc Rodriguez, Director at R3, a reuse network.

R3 is an Association working on bulky waste produced by social landlords

we get local players to collect the bulky waste

we then sort out everything that can be reused and given to local recycling centers

what is left is then sorted to be given to industrial recycling companies

Grégoire Maës, I'm Regional Director for SUEZ Water France

Today, we're welcoming 5 innovative companies at the SUEZ Collaborative Tour

Together, we will try to create projects that commitment to pursue innovation even further

We expect to bring concrete partnerships into being with the Group SUEZ

through skills patronage or subsidies to open and maintain recycling sites throughout the city

The Aquitaine region will be one of the most affected by climate change in France

Therefore we need to support cities so they can offer a better quality of life

This will happen through smart cities, closer bonds between citizens,

and by creating opportunities for everyone.

Philippe Bru, Atlantique Agency Director at SUEZ

covering the region of Aquitaine

The relationship between R3 and SUEZ was instantaneous

We needed a partner who could collect waste

And they needed an important actor with expertise and experience in waste sorting activities

Today, we managed to create this new partnership that will be deployed in Bordeaux.

A concrete and planned follow-up with fast results expected !

Intro to the Ketogenic Diet - Duration: 6:11.

- Hey, guys.

Robby here from CrossFit South Bend.

Today we're gonna talk about the ketogenic diet.

So keto or the ketogenic diet,

you have probably heard of

if you've ever heard of Bulletproof Coffee,

that's kind of in the same mold.

It's something that's become a lot more en vogue these days

and people are curious about what it is

and who it can be beneficial for.

So today we're gonna answer those questions.

So we're gonna talk about what is the ketogenic diet,

who can it be beneficial for and then should you do it?

Is it something that you should do

or are there certain cases where you might wanna hold off.

So, first of all, what is the ketogenic diet?

So in a lot of ways,

the ketogenic diet is a gigantic middle finger, if you will,

to the high carb, low fat dietary orthodoxy

that has prevailed for the past 40 to 50 years.

Now it wasn't designed that way, of course,

but it's basically the exact opposite.

If the prevailing orthodoxy of dietary advice

for the food pyramid and things like that

was super high carb and super low fat,

keto is the exact opposite.

It's super low carb and super high fat.

In particular, orthodox keto,

there are lots of different variations

but orthodox keto follows the macro-nutrient ratios

in the following way:

protein is about 20%, carbs are about 5%,

it's a really small amount and then fat is about 75%.

So the goal is to keep carbs very, very, very low,

to keep healthy fats very, very, very high

and keep protein to a very minimum level to ward off

what's called gluconeogenesis,

basically where your body makes glucose

from the protein that you eat.

So we're trying to reduce chronic blood sugar spikes

that come from excess carbohydrate consumption

and to a certain extent sometimes elevated glucose

and insulin that can come from excess protein consumption.

So that's what the ketogenic diet is.

It's a very high fat, very low carb, moderate protein diet.

So who's it beneficial for?

Well, it can be beneficial

in a lot of different circumstances.

Number one, above all else,

things like mental health conditions.

Epilepsy is a very, very famous example

where nothing else works for a lot of people

and epileptics who go on a ketogenic diet

see tremendous benefit,

neurological conditions more generally,

so not just epilepsy but things like Alzheimer's

or Parkinson's or multiple sclerosis

have all been show to be greatly benefited

by a ketogenic diet.

Another area that can be,

that it can be very helpful in is if someone is

let's say morbidly obese and severely insulin resistant,

one of the best ways to reverse that,

say in the case of Type II Diabetes,

is to go on a ketogenic diet

and one of the main ways

this is supposed to work is, again,

with the ratios of macro-nutrients that you have,

fat does not spike blood glucose

and therefore does not spike insulin.

Carbs are the most insulin spiking

and blood sugar spiking macro-nutrient, of course,

and then protein is kind of in the middle there

so that's why it's super high fat,

super low carb and then moderate protein.

So it's something that can be very, very beneficial

in those types of conditions

and there are other types of conditions as well

but those are the most famous.

Now aside from health conditions, in the endurance world,

just for performance,

people have been turning to a ketogenic diet recently

because when you do endurance events

like long cycles or marathons or things like that,

you're primarily tapping into your body's fat stores

if you're fueling yourself correctly

rather than lots of carbs and goo's

and all these other things that endurance athletes

typically consume and when you're fueling yourself

with fat rather than carbs,

you tend not to bonk out the same way people

who have lots of breads and pastas

and goo's before races tend to.

Now, should you do the ketogenic diet?

This is a very important question.

So the answer is, of course, it depends.

It depends on your context.

Always consult with a practitioner

or make sure you're talking with your doctor

about these things,

but that being said,

if you're someone with a neurological condition

or someone who's really insulin resistant,

it could be something to try.

On the other hand, the ketogenic diet isn't for everyone

and it can have its problems

because it's super low in carbohydrates,

it's also very low in fermentable fiber

which is necessary for your gut bacteria to produce

more beneficial bacteria and to grow and to thrive.

So cutting carbs that low can be problematic

from a beneficial bacteria perspective.

If someone is chronically stressed

or they have hormonal issues,

say thyroid issues or sex hormone imbalances,

like estrogen and progesterone,

or if they're trying to get pregnant for example,

a ketogenic diet may not be the best choice.

Again, it depends on the context.

There can be exceptions but, in general,

it may not be the best thing and then, lastly,

one thing you have to always judge with the ketogenic diet

and with any diet really, paleo,

vegan what have you is to what extent

can you live your life?

One of the things that's pretty hard about keto

is that you're basically cutting out

the vast majority of vegetables,

that you have to be eating a very small quantity

of vegetables aside from leafy greens to stay keto.

So that's a relevant consideration as well

but that being said,

it can be tremendously therapeutic for people

with mental health conditions, for endurance athletes,

and for people with insulin resistance.

Alright guys,

so hope you have a better sense

of what the ketogenic diet is,

who it can be beneficial for

and whether you should do it or not.

Thanks so much for tuning in.

We'll see you next time.

We have to come through in the clutch.

This is the beginning of our funny trip!

We didn't have to cancel 'FlyJam TV' today.

Indeed!

We can join the programme!

I don't want to livestream at the airport.

We've arrived in Frankfurt and Sogo has already started to work!

Master Akiyoshi's working so hard.

I didn't finish stuff before I departed.

I'm depressed.

I've just found out...

they have Dutch signage as well.

How do you know it's in Dutch.

But it's possible.

It says 'Ausgang' in German,

then 'exit' in English,

and next to 'exit,' there is an unfamiliar word.

It makes sense since it's near the border with the Netherlands.

Do you like the Netherlands?

Yup!

What a cute answer!

Where are you now?

Emmerich am Rhein

What happened?

We thought we were supposed to take a train in Emmerich.

But we realized that we had to take a bus.

When your ticket says just 'transfer,'

you may think that you have to transfer to another line, right? But it wasn't like that.

This is a German trap.

Sport of Germany...

Yes, we are.

We missed the bus... so we have to wait for an hour!

What shall we do now?

This is such an idyllic place.

We...we are heading to the festival in Kleve, right?

We have an hour, so we can try street performance here.

Street?

Yeah, street.

It'll be more like a picnic.

Our Euro tour got off to a rocky start.

'a rocky start'...yeah...

By the way, haven't you found out something in the gentlemen's room?

Yes, we have.

When you use the gents in Germany,

you have to pay to enter.

Even in a restaurant?

Yes, even in a restaurant.

In a restaurant, at a station, you have to pay if you want to go to the toilet.

I was truly surprised.

You may want to keep coins in your pocket then.

€1 coins and €2 coins are useful here.

If you are suffering from a stomachache,

and if you don't have any coins,

you may have to face a tragic ending.

Thank you for listening to our travel tip!

Kocha,

now are are...

at ALDI, a supermarket.

We have an hour because we missed a bus.

We are in a peopled hinterland in Germany.

Wow, there are so many kinds of yoghurt!

Look, look.

wow, so many varieties of cheese!

Wait, I can't see any juice here...

We've arrived in Kleve.

This is our first dinner in Kleve.

I'm really tired.

I'd like to introduce you to an organiser of this music festival...

Chris!

We'll do our best to perform well tomorrow.

EuroTour2017 (2/9) - Kleve, Germany 2 - (English Subtitle) - Duration: 14:51.

Come here quickly! Come here and join me!

Quickly, please!!! Please!!!

Don't join, Kocha.

If we jump like Charlie, we will have severe muscle pain and have to cancel our performance.

I'm saying 'come here quick'!

Quick, quick, quick!

They are enjoying jumping so much!

Crazy Japanese!

I'm begging you, Charlie. Please don't get hurt before our performance!

It's raining today.

But everybody's so energetic.

It's actually raining hard.

It's still raining.

On a festival day, it's raining.

But people are enjoying the festival. They are...

being merry!

It's raining so hard.

...from Japan!

And we are called "Imaginary Machete Swinger'!

And

The first song we are going to play is called...

'Irij.'

Our dear friend Michael is kindly holding a cable for us.↑

I was worried because there was a cable trouble.

So Michael from another band kindly held the cable during our performance.

I don't understand why the cable kept pulling out by itself.

But that trouble made us closer to Michael and other friends.

For the drum set,

we had to borrow a cymbal from another band.

There were many troubles.

There were many technical troubles.

Personally,

it was fun to play here.

It was fun to see people dancing like crazy

while we were playing 'Last Dance.'

Everybody was drunk at that point, so...

Do you mean everybody wanted to dance?

Yeah. To be honest, when we were playing acoustic, the audience didn't love it so much.

I wish we could make them love the songs.

We have to improve our ability.

We have to think it over.

Before Michael stepped in,

the cable malfunction troubled us so much.

We got really nervous at the beginning, but we could recover quickly.

Wan't it nice to see people enjoying 'Last Dance' so much?

We face that kind of trouble a lot in our career.

But Charlie has just started his/her career, so S/he got really nervous.

Agree.

It was a great beginning of our training journey.

It hasn't been so easy for Kocha and me to play here.

If a Japanese band comes over and is asked to play,

I don't believe they can do that.

In that sense...

Did we do our best!?

Yeah, we did.

Under any circumstances, we can play our music.

It's very important that we created our own music

and bring it all the way from Japan.

If you face another technical problem and there's no sound from speakers,

you can sing a cappella.

The thing which made me nervous most is...

Of course, I was trying my best to sing... you know

but I was troubled by my own movement and talking.

I didn't really understand what you were saying between the songs.

But s/he said some sentences in German.

That was so Charlie.

You were properly communicating with the audience.

After our performance,

people gathered around Charlie.

So I started to clear up by myself.

I saw people asking Kocha for his autograph.

Two of you were besieged by autograph hunters.

And I was besieged by a guitar, drum sticks, pedals, etc., etc.

Finally there was one person who started to talk to me.

I didn't understand what he was saying.

I could feel people were saying nice things to us.

But I didn't understand what they were saying.

So I couldn't share joy with your guys.

I can't speak other languages so well...but...

Until today, I never thought

speaking other languages could be a kind of skill.

Today I had a task to find a gas canister for Kocha.

Yeah, Charlie helped me out for that.

And I talked to many people after our performance.

For the first time in my life, I felt this 'skill' may have been useful.

That's super useful.

How about music?

How was Kocha?

And myself?

You guys were really cool.

Even when Kocha made minor mistakes,

he was always calm.

He feigned a look of innocence.

So I also kept calm.

But Nii (Sogo)!

You cannot fake it!

I can sense when you make mistakes!

You mean when I play drums?

Any instruments!

When it comes to Kocha,

he can pretend that nothing has happened.

So I don't get nervous.

When something happens to you,

I can really sense it.

Me?

guitar?

Anything.

drums?

Anything.

Really? Was it so obvious today?

He's laughing.

I want to say something about it.

Why?

Look at Kocha. He seems so innocent.

I make mistakes innocently.

Look, look.

For instance, often I get nervous like this, right?

and let's say I peep how Kocha is doing next to me.

His eyes will be definitely saying 'everything is alright.'

Well, at the end of the day, IMS can't exist without Master Akiyoshi.

You wrapped it well.

Really?

I just summed up the nature of IMS.

Now, let's drink together and relax.

Well, there are so many things to learn from today's performance.

and I'm really happy that we could play here.

I enjoyed it very much.

Before I came here, I was worried about the festival in Kleve.

But it was a great event.

I am honoured to play here.

Also, I loved the audience.

Everyone was so lively and energetic.

I agree. Everyone was so powerful.

I could feel that they came over because they loved music!

I truly appreciate that.

They know how to enjoy the festival for themselves.

There were passionate hoopsters.

And there were a few people jumping on the trampoline.

Next to the stage, they were hula-hooping so passionately.

They were highly probably not listening to music.

It was rather shocking to see the adults being so passionate about hula-hooping.

The audience was so young.

Yeah, there were so many young people.

They were all in their teens or early twenties.

Yet, everyone thought I was far younger than them.

(...really!?)

I'm sure about it.

Recently, you've been saying, 'I look young.'

Me?

Yeah. What happened?

It's not just about myself.

Asians generally look young.

Even in Japan, I look young, though.

Anyways,

Kocha... he can't just cherry pick the best bits!

No, he can't.

The girls were asking for his autograph.

A girl asked me to sign my name on a pick.

Not a band name.

Which one of you gave away a pick?

Did you give that pick?

Yeah, I did.

I saw a girl who was being really energetic.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

That girl was asking Kocha for his autograph,

so I was watching them.

Kocha asked her if he should have written 'IMS'

but the girl said she wanted to have Kocha's name on the pick.

She was really excited

and came to my friend and yielded to him,

'That cool guy gave me a pick!!!!!'

I thought it must have been either of you guys.

Kocha is really popular.

Ahhhhhh, cherry pick again...

In our activities as IMS,

I often say, 'I want to be popular'

But it's always a joke.

But Kocha always cherry pick the best bits.

I want Charlie to be popular.

I want to see girls begging for your autograph.

I thought

Kocha had the same feeling and wish.

It was only me.

Until today, I thought we had the same wish.

What are you talking about?

I'm just saying you were so popular.
