Norway to buy 24 K9 howitzers from South Korea - Duration: 0:48.
The Norwegian military has agreed to buy 24 K9 Thunder howitzers from South Korea.
The manufacturer, Hanwha Land Systems, announced the 230-million U.S. dollar deal on Thursday.
The deal also includes six K10 ammunition resupply vehicles to be delivered by 2020.
Beating bids from Germany and France, Hanwha's CEO said the deal shows the recognition the
system is gaining globally,... and that further sales are in the works.
Earlier this year, 48 K-9's were sold to Finland and 100 were sold to India.
First developed in 1998, the howitzer can fire 155 millimeter shells, and can travel
on mountainous terrain, with a top speed of 67 kilometers per hour.

Low-ranking N. Korean soldier defects to S. Korea via DMZ, several gunshots heard at border - Duration: 2:25.
This morning, a North Korean soldier defected to South Korea via the inter-Korean land border...
just five weeks after the dramatic defection at the Joint Security Area.
And there were several gunshots heard at the inter-Korean border.
For more, we have our Oh Jung-hee on the phone from the Ministry of National Defense in Seoul.
Jung-hee, what's the latest?
Mark, this happened just four hours ago,... a low-ranking North Korean soldier defected
to South Korea through the Demilitarized Zone.
He appeared in front of a guard post on the mid-western front at just past eight this
morning,... and South Korean guards and surveillance equipment identified him.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff said... after checking his intent to defect, the military carried
out 'appropriate actions'.
He was safely secured... and the related institutions will investigate why and how the soldier defected.
But unlike earlier reports, it turns out that there were several gunshots at the border.
At around 9:24, the South Korean military found several North Korean soldiers approaching
the Military Demarcation Line while searching for the soldier who defected.
At 9:30, the South's military turned on warning broadcasts and fired 20 rounds of a K-3 machine
gun.
No more soldiers approached the border afterwards,... but the military heard gunshots coming from
the North at 10:13 and 10:16... which left no bullets or damage on the South Korean side.
Now that makes a total of four North Korean soldiers who've defected to South Korea this
year.
And the incident this morning comes only a month after a North Korean soldier defected
to the South... via the truce village of Panmunjeom.
He first drove a jeep to get near to the border and then ran south across the military demarcation
line,... and in that process, he was shot multiple times by several North Korean soldiers.
Other than the soldier this morning,... two North Korean civilians aboard a fishing boat
defected to South Korea last night.
South Korea's naval patrol plane found their vessel in the East Sea,... and the North Koreans
expressed their intent to defect to the South.
Back to you, Mark.

Korea getting ready to greet guests for PyeongChang 2018 - Duration: 4:08.
With 2018's biggest event for Korea less than a month and a half away.
Preparations to welcome guests from across the globe shift into high gear.
These efforts are ongoing not just in select areas but covers the nation's main gateway
and the Olympic venues.
Our Cha Sang-mi takes us to these spots.
Incheon International Airport -- the gateway to Korea -- is busy preparing to host guests
from around the world during the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics.
The PyeongChang 2018 mascots Soohorang and Bandabi welcome visitors with traditional
Korean performances.
(ENGLISH) "I think it's really exciting.
I am excited for the people who get to come here for the Olympics."
(ENGLISH) "Is gonna be a lot more people coming to Korea
and it's gonna be a lot more fun and parties and events.
It's gonna be great, I think, yeah "
The airport is only the starting point.
Welcome pillars have been set up at road junctions along the way to the Olympic venues.
The snow-capped pillars serve as a lighthouse for those going to the Games.
(KOREAN) 1 "I am so excited we are hosting the Winter
Olympics, and I feel honored I that could take a small part in the Olympic preparations."
(KOREAN) 2 "We are installing various sculptures like
the welcome pillars along five different highways and at two train stations that lead to the
Olympic venues.
We are also instructing business owners with the so-called 'Good manner exercise'."
While PyeongChang County is busy making sure it leaves a good first impression, a webtoon
contest exhibition took place in Gangneung.
Webtoon illustrators and cartoonists displayed the best of their talents with works related
to the upcoming Games.
Some wanted to show their passion for the upcoming Olympics through their artistic skills.
(KOREAN) 1 "I drew the painting while thinking about
the athletes who overcame their difficulties to prepare for the Games.
I wanted to encourage the athletes."
And some wanted to please visitors to the Games with the small gift of their portraits.
(KOREAN) 3 "I am happy to participate in the Olympics
preparations with my talent."
And if you see this poster with beoseon, some traditional Korean socks, on buildings in
Gangneung, feel free to drop in.
Gangneung city has created a cultural exchange to make foreign guests feel more at home through
the so-called "Welcome Shop".
As the name suggests, some 2-hundred businesses, such as cafes, restaurants and mobile phone
dealerships offer free wifi, drinking water and restrooms for Gangneung's Olympic guests.
And among them, there are shops where visitors have the chance to experience K-beauty and
Korean aesthetic culture.
In this welcome shop, as an additional service, makeup artists apply Korean make-up to visitors
free of charge.
(KOREAN) 2 "I am so glad I can contribute my talent as
a make-up artist and be part of the Olympics.
I will be happy to present K-beauty to foreign visitors."
Another Gangneung resident, an owner of a 25-year-old barber shop, says it is an honor
for him that his hometown is hosting such a big sporting event.
(KOREAN) 3 "I would love to welcome guests from all over
the world for the Olympics.
I will make sure you get the best haircut when you visit."
Residents and business owners at the Olympic host locations are looking forward to seeing
their towns bustling with visitors from around the world.
(Stand-up) "From Incheon Airport to shops and facilities
in PyeongChang and Gangneung, visitors can not only enjoy the Olympic atmosphere, but
also experience the best of Korean culture.
Cha Sang-mi, Arirang News, Gangneung."

U.S. passes China draft proposal for tougher sanctions on Pyongyang: source - Duration: 0:43.
Hoping for a quick vote on the matter,... the United States has handed China a draft
resolution for stronger UN Security Council sanctions on North Korea.
A senior Trump administration official told Reuters that talks are already underway, but
there's been no agreement yet.
There's no word on the details,... but it's thought the U.S. wants to sharply restrict
Pyongyang's supply of refined petroleum, which is capped by previous UN sanctions at two
million barrels a year.
China, which supplies most of North Korea's oil, has long been reluctant to agree to such
a strong move.
Reuters also reported this week that the U.S. is urging the UN Security Council to blacklist
ten ships for circumventing sanctions on North Korea.

People's Party and Bareun Party to hold separate party meetings over possible merger - Duration: 0:50.
Two political parties here in Korea could become one in the coming days or weeks.
The minor opposition Bareun Party is holding a closed-door general meeting this morning
to confirm where the party stands on merging with the center-left People's Party.
This follows an announcement by Ahn Cheol-soo of the People's Party on Wednesday where he
said he wants to join forces with the Bareun Party.
The statement was slammed by some of his own party's members.
The Bareun Party is expected to vote on whether to push ahead wiht the merger.
Also later today,... the People's Party is tabling Ahn Cheol-soo's proposal of holding
a vote on the possible merger at 2 PM Korea time.
Ahn has pledged to step down if party members vote against the merger.

S. Korean economy to grow 3% next year: BOK Governor - Duration: 2:10.
Korea's central bank governor projects that if there are no surprises, the local economy
is expected to maintain its growth momentum through next year... on the back of the country's
robust exports.
Kim Ji-yeon gives us the details.
At a meeting with economic experts on Thursday, Bank of Korea Governor Lee Ju-yeol said the
South Korean economy will continue to grow and will reach its potential growth rate of
three percent next year on the back of the global economic recovery,... under the assumption
that there are no surprises on the way that may trigger a setback.
This comes as the Governor looked back on 2017, which was riddled with uncertainties
including the impeachment of President Park Geun-hye, increased trade protectionist measures,
and nuclear and missile provocations from North Korea.
(Korean ) "Despite these hardships, the local economy
has managed to keep its growth rate in the three-percent range this year...
mainly due to companies' efforts to achieve high levels of exports."
( 3% ... .)
He said Korean exports grew at the fastest rate among any of the ten major exporting
countries during the first nine months this year.
Its trade volume exceeded one-trillion U.S. dollars for the first time in three years.
And the volume of Korean exports is expected to increase for the 14th consecutive month
in December... as data from the Korea Customs Services shows it grew more than 16-percent
during the first 20 days of this month compared to the previous year... to reach 31-and-half-billion
dollars for the month,... mainly due to semiconductor exports.
The BOK Governor did however cite normalization of monetary policies including rate hikes
by major economies as a major risk that could hamper growth.
In order to maneuver through these potential risks, he stressed the country needs to address
its structural problems that are weighing on the recovery pace of the local economy,...
mainly the one-point-three-trillion dollar household debt, record-high youth unemployment
and low birthrate.

Trump threatens to cut US aid ahead of UN Jerusalem vote - Duration: 1:33.
The UN General Assembly will hold an emergency session on Thursday to vote on a draft resolution
rejecting the U.S. decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
Amid international criticism, President Trump has threatened to cut aid to countries that
vote against the United States.
Park Se-young has more.
There was no beating around the bush.
Ahead of the UN General Assembly's emergency session on Thursday, President Trump threatened
to sever financial aid to countries that vote against the U.S. decision to recognize Jerusalem
as Israel's capital.
(English) "For all of these nations that take our money
and then they vote against us at the Security Council, or they vote against us, potentially,
at the Assembly, they take hundreds of millions of dollars and even billions of dollars and
then they vote against us.
Well, we're watching those votes.
Let them vote against us; we'll save a lot.
We don't care."
His comments came after Nikki Haley, the U.S. ambassador to the UN, sent a letter to member
states, …saying the president will take the vote personally.
She followed the letter with a tweet warning (quote) "the U.S. will be taking names."
After Monday's U.S. veto, Haley told the Security Council that the U.S. will not be told by
any country where it puts its embassy.
Despite Washington's warnings, the proposed measure is expected to pass easily in the
193-member General Assembly,… which has no vetoes.

IOC releases guidelines on uniforms for 'neutral' Russian athletes - Duration: 1:42.
They are one of the powerhouses of winter sports.
Russia was recently banned from competing under their national colors at the PyeongChang
Olympics because of a massive state-sponsored doping scandal.
With just a month-and-a-half to go until the curtain comes up on the Games,... the International
Olympic Committee has released requirements for Russian athletes competing in February
as neutrals.
Kim Hyesung has the details.
A list of 13 guidelines has been revealed for Russian Olympic hopefuls for the upcoming
PyeongChang Winter Games.
The International Olympic Committee's ruling Wednesday comes two weeks after a ban was
imposed on Russia for widespread doping, with the exception of athletes who passed a strict
anti-doping process.
Russian athletes, coaches and team officials must wear a logo that reads "Olympic Athlete
from Russia" and the word "Russia" will also be upside down.
A maximum of two colors are allowed for their uniform, but it cannot have the same tone
as the red, white and blue colors of the Russian flag, though darker shades of red and blue
will be permitted.
As for the Winter Paralympics, it's not yet clear whether Russia can compete in the games.
The International Paralympic Committee said Wednesday it will maintain its suspension
of the Russian Paralympic Committee, which has been in place since the Rio Paralympics
last year.
The Committee said it will make its final decision in late January, weeks before PyeongChang
Paralympics begin in March.
In the interim, Russian athletes can compete as neutrals in qualification events across
four sports - alpine skiing, biathlon, cross-country skiing and snowboard.

North Korea starting to test loading anthrax on ICBMs: Report - Duration: 1:44.
North Korea is reportedly testing the possibility of fitting biological weapons to its long-range
missiles out of concern its nuclear warheads aren't up to scratch.
A Japanese daily says the regime is seeing whether anthrax can survive the intense heat
caused when a missile re-enters the atmosphere.
Park Soyun reports.
North Korea's test of its new Hwasong-15 missile in November revealed it has the range to hit
any part of the continental United States.
It's a worrying development,... but that might not be all.
Citing an unidentified source in South Korea,.. the Japanese daily Asahi Shimbun reports that
Pyongyang is conducting heat and pressure tests to see whether anthrax could survive
a missile's reentry into the atmosphere.
Missiles have to withstand temperatures of up to 7,000 degrees Celsius when they fall
to Earth.
The source added the regime is likely developing biological weapons because its nuclear-tipped
warheads might not be able to reach the U.S. mainland intact.
(Korean) - "I believe North Korea has started developing
biological and chemical weapons since its technology still isn't good enough to reduce
the weight of its warheads."
Anthrax is particularly dangerous -- aside from being deadly it's difficult to detect
as it's hard to see, smell or taste.
The report comes as the Trump Administration -- in its new U.S. National Security Strategy
-- stated that North Korea funnels hundreds of millions of dollars into nuclear, chemical,
and biological weapons that could threaten the United States.
North Korea rejects the U.S. allegations that it's developing biological weapons, saying
it's part of Washington's scheme to stifle the regime.

U.S. pours cold water on President Moon's drill postponement proposal - Duration: 1:44.
President Moon Jae-in's suggestion of delaying the annual South Korea-U.S. joint military
drills gained traction in some circles when he made his surprise pronouncement.
It won a degree of support from U.S. forces in Korea,... but Washington's top diplomat
has poured cold water on the idea.
Won Jung-hwan reports.
In an interview with a U.S. broadcaster earlier this week,...
President Moon said he had proposed postponing the joint military drills during the PyeongChang
Winter Olympics.
But the liberal leader stressed it could only happen if North Korea were to halt its military
provocations.
The unprecedented proposal seemed to gain some traction,... with U.S. forces stationed
in the country releasing a short press release,... saying it's committed to the two countries'
decision on whether to delay the annual drills.
The South Korea-U.S. Combined Forces Command added it wants the PyeongChang Olympics to
be successful and is committed to ensure the Games run smoothly.
But a different sentiment out of Washington.
A spokesperson for the Pentagon said it would be inappropriate to discuss plans for future
exercises at this time,.. while not confirming remarks made by President Moon.
U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said he was *not aware of any discussions to change
their regular joint exercises.
Responding to that, South Korea's top office said discussions on a possible delay have
been held between the allies' military authorities.
The presidential office said it's possible Tillerson may not have been part of such discussions
as they are more related to the military rather than foreign relations.
The top office added that it's waiting for Washington's response,... saying the proposal
is a matter worthy of review.

U.S. Congress wraps up massive tax package - Duration: 2:26.
U.S. Republicans have joined President Trump in celebrating their first major legislative
accomplishment of the year.
The House of Representatives on Wedensday gave its final approval to the most sweeping
tax reform since the 1980s.
Ro Aram reports.
President Trump has finally got his first big win in Congress after a year of GOP infighting
and political stumbles.
The largest tax reform bill since 1986 now heads to Trump's desk to be signed into law
at a later date for technical reasons.
But, before that he joined his fellow Republicans to celebrate outside the White House.
He said the one-and-a-half-trillion-dollar package will create jobs and boost the economy
and also left room to say his trademark statement.
(English) Reuters - Edit No3210 "We are going to bring at least four trillion
dollars back into this country.
Money that was frozen overseas and in parts and worlds and, some of them don't even like
us.
And they had the money.
Well they're not going to have the money long.....And so it's really, I guess it's very simple,
when you think you haven't heard this expression, but, we are making America great again.
You haven't heard that, have you?"
But, Democrats call the legislation a boon to the rich.
(English) Reuters - Edit No3211 "The president does very well under this bill,
most of his cabinet does very well under this bill, a large percentage of his contributors
do very well under this bill.
Yes the president is part of the top 1 percent.
And the bill is aimed to help the top 1 percent."
The president himself, while praising the bill, cited the deep cut in the corporate
tax rate, from 35 to 21 percent, as "probably the biggest factor in our plan."
American individuals making less that 75-thousand dollars a year will get temporary tax cuts,
but after the year 2027, may see the rate increase.
Democrats also argue that the tax reform plan will blow up national debt.
House Speaker Paul Ryan said the GOP is willing to risk running up deficits with the aim of
getting a higher annual economic growth rate.
Though Democrats are furious over the new policy, they remain upbeat about the potential
political fallout in next year's congressional elections.

AI virus detected in Yeongnam confirmed to be H5N6 - Duration: 0:54.
It has been confirmed that the strain of avian influenza discovered on one of the two virus-hit
farms in Yeongam county, Jeollanam-do province... was the H5N6 bird flu strain,... which is
a cross between the highly pathogenic H5N8 that spread through Europe in late 2016 and
a less pathogenic N6 virus.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs made the announcement on Wednesday,
adding that they will be able to know whether the virus is highly pathogenic by Thursday.
They also said that there is the possibility that the virus found on the other farm, which
is only eleven kilometers away, comes from the same strain.
Earlier this month, quarantine officials culled some 76,000 ducks at five duck farms in Jeolla
Province, the nation's largest duck producing region.

degrees on Thursday.
Heading to North America, those in Chicago will get a bit of relief from the cold on
Thursday then things will get colder each day.
