Stephen Hawking: Wir müssen die Erde bald verlassen! - Clixoom Science & Fiction - Duration: 3:13.

This hawking one of the most famous physicists in the world beats alarm he thinks we are the world

The only way to save us is to leave as fast as we can to save space soon

building up and landing on the mars time does not stop time

So why why why now welcome to klicks and science fiction

Stephen hawking is really more of a quote earth is threatened in so many areas that it is difficult for me still positive

I hope the big nations will team up to master this challenge together for all of us

He said that at the samens festival in Trondheim

Climate change, you have them hit epidemics artificial intelligence or population growth all that we have reported here and where we partly

Scarcism has been accused of making the earth soon uninhabitable he does not deny the importance

the fight against climate change and global warming quote

In contrast to donald trump just the worst and wrong

A decision on climate change has hit the world that has ever seen one of the other problems he sees in the limited resources

quote we need more space and the only place we could go is space it's time other solar systems too

I'm convinced of that

that we have to leave the earth, yes, and that in the next 200 to 500 years from his scenario

The world in 100 years under is because of the meanwhile of from we had so long

But reports that it is always a good idea to have a second leg

There is nothing wrong with that

That's why Hawking has now called on nations of the world to build a base on the moon for the next 30 years

2025 so already in seven years humans would have to fly to Mars quote the

Propagation in space is the only thing that can save us

Hawking sees space travel ahead of the next jump The settlement of distant planets is no longer science fiction There are now around 50

Exoplanets that can be habitable, however, is the question of how we can get there that still stands me

In the true sense of the word in the star only when we drove the warp

Such a journey would have been possible until then, only the settlement in our solar system remains

And it seems to be more and more realistic that tons of water have been found on Mars

Livelihood for the settlement nasa and also the esa want to the moon where just apparently ice caves were discovered to do more

So, as it is a lot in motion and the chances are not bad that we first on the moon and later

We are going to build permanent stations on Mars

And the best of course here at pixum if he does not want to miss a video on this and all other topics then push me here

an abo on the eye and forgetful

Exactly on the bell only then you will also always informed about new videos otherwise

The youtube algorithm filters out the videos here so here it goes on with it on it

1000 rockets to the mars there are the plans of them masks spacex otherwise until then

stay tuned

Chelsea 1 Norwich 1 (5-3 pens): Willy Caballero the hero as nine-man Blues survive dramatic shootout - Duration: 6:35.

Chelsea 1 Norwich 1 (5-3 pens): Willy Caballero the hero as nine-man Blues survive dramatic shootout

EDEN HAZARD stepped up to spare Chelsea's blushes with the winning shootout penalty after a VAR controversy.

A stunning blunder denied the Blues a penalty in extra-time when Norwich defender Timm Klose appeared to trip Willian in the box.

Willy Caballero saved the decisive penalty from Nelson Oliveira.

But referee Graham Scott did not give it and the VAR Mike Jones did not over-rule the decision as they did not deem it a 'clear and obvious' error.

There were also two Blues players sent off in added time.

First Pedro, who picked up a second yellow for a foul on Wes Hoolahan after being booked for diving in normal time.

And then Alvaro Morata picked up two bookings in seconds — one for diving and then a second for dissent for protesting the decision straight after.

In the penalty incident, Willian was even booked for diving and TV pundits slammed the fact the system did not call for a spot-kick.

Eden Hazard scored the winning penalty to send Chelsea into the fourth round.

Chelsea celebrate after needing 180 minutes and a penalty shootout to knock out Norwich.

Alan Shearer said: "You saw VAR work perfectly last night at Leicester for a matter of fact— but you are now seeing why I am very doubtful.

"It's a shambles because you have four ex footballers in here plus one in the commentary box and we all think it's a pen and he books him for diving.

"Who on Earth is looking at that screen thinking it's not — that's why its a shambles.

Former Manchester United striker Dion Dublin agreed with Shearer.

Jamal Lewis celebrates scoring his first ever professional goal.

He added: "It's a shocking decision, I don't know how they have got it wrong.

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte was furious but nobody was happy at Stamford Bridge last night for an FA Cup third round replay nobody really wanted.

Norwich could not sell out their 6,000 tickets allocation with the game live on the BBC, leaving a huge blue chunk of empty seats in the ground's redeveloped Shed End.

Chelsea boss Conte certainly did not need this extra game and made that patently obvious with his complaints about fixture pile-up.

Jamal Lewis scored a last gasp header to send the game into extra-time.

But it is nobody's fault except goal-shy Chelsea's that they could not do the job in the first place against Championship opposition at Carrow Road.

Nine changes to the Blues' starting line up showed how it was time for some others to try to score the goals which could drag them out of the new year doldrums.

Danny Drinkwater had the best effort by far with a shot on 26 minutes from 30 yards plus, powering the ball through the fingertips of Norwich keeper Angus Gunn, only to smash the crossbar.

What Conte perhaps should have done is play the kids.

Michy Batshuayi scored a tap which looked to have fired Chelsea into the next round.

During the half-time break Chelsea were only too pleased to show on the giant scoreboard that their youngsters were 6-0 up against West Brom in the FA Youth Cup — goals are not a problem down in the nursery.

The timing of the announcement could not have been better, just moments after information that the Tube delays which caused kick off to be put back 15 minutes had been cleared.

Fans had a chance to escape the match if they really wanted.

Michy Batshuayi may want to do the same this month and West Ham boss David Moyes was in the stands watching him last night.

Bizarrely, Chelsea have been linked with a move for West Ham striker Andy Carroll and a £20million deal could be on the cards.

The Belgian striker grabbed his eighth goal of the season in all competitions.

Kenedy assisted Batshuayi to finally break the deadlock.

Batshuayi's second-half goal was a tap in from a low centre into the area by Brazilian left-back Kenedy.

It did not require much other than sticking a foot out to divert the ball past Gunn but it will have done him some psychological good after playing second fiddle to Morata for most of the season.

Conte will still be a bit worried about his team.

Norwich were desperately unlucky not to equalise when James Maddison's 60th-minute shot was cleared off the line by Ethan Ampadu.

Keeper Willy Caballero also made a superb one-handed save from Maddison.

Chelsea squandered numerous chances throughout the game.

Ethan Ampadu was handed a rare start in defence.

Nelson Oliveira hit the bar and did enough to rattle Chelsea consistently enough that Conte was forced to bring on Andreas Christensen and Morata for the last ten minutes of the 90.

Player of the Year N'Golo Kante had joined them supposedly to see the game out but in the fourth minute of injury time teenager Jamal Lewis sent the tie into extra-time when he flicked on a ball into the box from Timm Klose to score his first goal for the Canaries.

Antonio Conte cut a frustrated figure throughout the contest.

Red Sea fish Dessole Royal Rojana Resort Sharm El Sheikh Egypt underwater world - Duration: 1:50.

We have already several times

rested in Egypt

on the Red Sea in Sharm El Sheikh

In Dessole Royal Rodjana Resort

we stopped

more often than in other hotels

We really liked the beach of the hotel

and the ability to swim a lot

between two beaches along the reef

One day we

we are as usual

went to swim from pontoon to pontoon

But this time

everything was different

Fish blue color

who all the time swam

near the pontoons in flocks or singly

this time lost their way

in a fairly dense pack

and there were much more

We swam directly into the center of the pack

but the fish on us

did not pay much attention

Was seen

that they were attracted by something

and forced to go into a flock

Fish tight ring floated around

and it lasted about five minutes

We often remember

good rest in Egypt

in Dessole Royal Rojana Resort

and excellent hotel reef

with lots of fish

In today's episode: release of Rugby mode, best in eSports and news in 1 minute.

Hello Tankers!

Today's V-LOG is short, let's start:

Rugby mode wasn't released, as the tests show it has bugs when passing the ball,

and it's boring without passing.

For example: in a tunnel the ball sticks to the ceiling or flies through the walls.

We'll continue working on the mode and release it with the new missions soon.

This week we've disabled hard missions from appearing in new daily missions.

You can find out why on the Forum.

eSports.

We've looked at the tournaments of 2017 and picked 5 best players.

What's interesting, 3 of them play for Synergy.

And the best player is Makxxe! Here're his titles:

Makxee received 1 million crystals, Nightmare paint and 6 months of Premium.

Join eSports and be among the best.

Video of the Week.

The theme was "skills in Assault". Let's watch!

In an RV in the USA 2017 // Episode 10. - Grand Canyon - Duration: 9:09.

Good morning!

Slept a night in the wilderness again

It wasn't the best sleep

It wasn't because of the place, but I left sound on my phone

And I got a couple of calls during the night

Of course, it was daytime in Finland

We were sleeping and coughing as well

It's time to head towards Grand Canyon now

We've been there before but we'll do more hiking around there this time

We're at the entrance to Grand Canyon

We're queueing for the tickets

We have the season pass though

It allows entry to all national parks in the U.S.

It's a bit on side of the road

But there aren't many parking spots and we won't bother to go further away

There's a nice nipping wind here

It's not too hot at least

Last time we had a heatwave here

Matti Nykänen had a helicopter ride somewhere down there once

- Teemu Selänne too

- Yeah there were some others

Which show was it again?

- Some stars.. - Superstars?

Whatever

The canyon is mind-bogglingly big

It's about 5000 feet deep

That's about 1500-2000 meters

- Found anything interesting?

- It's pretty interesting as a whole

You can enjoy the sights without the heat outside

Let's keep going

- Water bottle refill station

I'm spilling everything

- There's rocks down there

- Starting to get hungry

We did eat some beef jerky

And some dried fruits

They don't keep the hunger pangs away though

There's a route down there

It continues all the way there

It's starting to be really warm

A little gust of wind

Feels good

- An old village

We've walked a few kilometers now

Decide to take a bus back though

There wasn't anything really impressive on the way anyway

The bus is every half an hour

We're in a bus now. Didn't have to wait at all.

Decide not to go to the café

The sandwiches were really expensive

7 or 8 dollars each

We'll eat in the car

There's some beef jerky here

Loads of protein

We have some müesli bars too

And some dried fruits

The Canyon is right next to us

You can see it every now and then from the trees

The whole road follows the canyon

Taking a small break

Enjoying some views

It's really nice

- Yeah it is

Stopped here to view some sights, there's meant to be some kind of tower

I think there's something worthwhile because of size of the parking lot

That's the tower

I don't think it's the main attraction here

You can see the end of the canyon from here

Now we've seen that as well

Then we continue our journey

Then we head towards Page

We won't be having any longer stops in between

We'll only stop for some petrol and coffee

Time to fill up the tank again

The wind is really warm

Haha! A Desert Bar! ~ & No More Stink! - Duration: 11:54.

all right well proof you never know what you're gonna find when you just start

going the desert I love using scadoooder for this because I'm looking for free

camping or anything I came across this sign out here let me just get close

enough to it so the sun's not shining here take a look the desert bar the

Nelion saloon open October through April Saturday and Sunday high noon to 6:00

p.m. so we're gonna make it a little random to just have a bar out in the

middle of nowhere I don't know how they're gonna power it or get water but

we'll go check it out

you

holy cow that was an exhausting scooter ride that was horrible I'm glad I made

it here welcome to the bar in the middle of the desert hear the music it's it's

not the most random thing ever I don't get it

so I googled it on my phone actually this is an old mining camp up here but

some guy named Ken I forgot his name bought it in the 80s and he opened up a

bar with a liquor license and towed it in the water on trucks they have solar

for electricity so quit it put a bunch of history to this desert bar I guess

that only opened two days a week and only it for a few months in the winter

look at all the solar panels there's another one behind another roof full of

solar behind it but the entire place is runoff solar here in the desert I guess

they did actually find out well they dug deep enough to get oh well they're not

hauling in their water anymore they do have water darn random No

inside here they got some other old pictures of what it used to look like

maybe there's some horseshoe arc for you guys

turtle they're these chairs chairs laid completely out of horseshoes

and that's to signify the horseshoe pit awesome right behind the stage where you

barbecue smells good right there

it's pretty creative actually if they got old wire bundle what every call

these barrel things pretty darn quirky you guys know I like quirky I don't I

haven't seen anybody under the age of 40 here son on I don't know where all these

people come from they must just knew about it ahead of time cuz I sure found

it by accident the other thing is about in the summertime the reason they closed

in the summertime is because it is obviously really really hot and they

don't have a way to cool it out here I don't think the motivation to come out

to the desert when it's 120 degrees is that high so only opens September 30th

- I think March or April but it's cool well put some GP yeah yeah I'll find a

way to give you some GPS coordinates just guys do not try to drive an RV up

here that was about seven and a half miles but that road it took me over 40

minutes to get here on that little stretch right there so I would take

high-clearance vehicle don't take a scooter I got the scooter for Tory no

that's exactly no way I would have been here ever I wouldn't have found this

place without scooter so she's a trooper all right no biggie

back here at Parker Walmart which they say they allow you to stay here up to

three nights in a row and this is that one that's kind of an RV park there's

there's literally a lot a lot of RVs here and before it gets dark here I got

one more project one I am very excited to do and one I'm very excited to show

you the results many of you know that that RV is complaining about the smell

while you're driving and you roll down the window so to better explain that the

toilet doesn't have a p-trap like like a standard household toilet right so there

it's not it's not helping invent that by using water although we do have a gasket

in the toilet and you're supposed to keep water that helps but but our vent

pipes go up separately to the roof and I'll show you so up here on the RV roof

you can see I've got two vents there that one there and that one back there

those are for my gray and black tanks and it's supposed to bring all of the

sense out this way so that it doesn't go inside the RV the problem is and if

you're an RVer you probably know this if you've ever tried to roll down your

window while driving even a little bit the entire RV can fill with the smell of

raw sewage it's it's a very unpleasant smell and sometimes the actual gray tank

can smell even worse than the black tank it just depends or just stagnant water

anyway the stock system on nearly every larvae just does not work and the path

of least resistance apparently it's more convenient for the smell to go up

through the toilet and then underneath the door of the bathroom and then fill

the entire RV and go out the tiny crack of my window than it is to just simply

go out one of these events that come stock so they literally do not work at

all I don't even know what their purpose is and yeah there are a lot of gadgets

out there that can't be world in other places will try to sell

you that are better caps but they they just don't have very good reviews and

this one actually has a really good review there's some videos out there I

forgot the name of the couple but they're in their RV after installing two

of these guys 55 mile an hour both windows down passenger and driver's

window down and then the lady goes back and flushes the toilet and keeps the

valve open while they're driving and they say with straight faces and smiling

don't smell a thing in here that's shocking right but apparently these

cheap pieces of plastic I think I paid 20 bucks apiece for these but there's

they're creating that type of vacuum science or something I don't know how it

works but there's people that say these things work and then it actually will be

sucking those fumes out as you're driving instead of letting them go

somewhere else so whereas before I just had a vent that is supposed to vent the

tank this is going to pull the sense from the tanks and force them to come

out over the roof instead of in the RV so I got two of these they are supposed

to be really really simple to install so I'm gonna get on that right now before

it gets dark so I'm gonna be stripping away the caulking around here

to remove to aint access to the screws and then we'll take this off and I will

show you how it works and so this turned out to be a it's the dirty annoying job

I guess you'd call it cuz I mean I'm working right on the vent right here

this is literally the toilet poop tank right there and I'm you know trying to

carve off stuff and take off the old one and I'll tell you what it definitely

works because it smells a little like poo up here this is the old one that I

pulled off obviously I still need to clean up the area but I'm gonna I'm

gonna prep it and I'm gonna go get myself leveling dicor and start filling

in some of these holes also going to be replacing this you can see how dry and

cracked that is so we'll get a new layer around the tube and then we will prep

the surface what the heck what isn't about every

easy project I do so basically what we're gonna end up doing again after

this is clean but this is gonna go on there like that obviously all these

holes need to be sealed because this one is smaller in diameter it's all gonna be

exposed and then this guy right that's gonna sit up here but as you can see I

can't even push it down all the way because this pipe sticks up too high for

the old one so I need to get a hacksaw and I need to physically cut it right

here to make this smaller so that this will fit on there

it's never easy but since the project took a little longer than I thought I'm

just gonna do the one tonight seal it all up and then tomorrow I'll do the one

for the other side but let me clean it and silicone it or clean it and Dicor it

up I got her all sealed up and secured and

latched in there I did get some black dust on the inside part but I got all

the screws covered and in a couple days this dye core will flatten out and be

really even and you won't even see any of the imperfections there wasn't really

going for perfection anyway but it looks good so like I said since it got dark

I'm gonna save the other one there for later but at least I know I can do it

now and I know what I need to do to cut that pipe I almost got rid of this

hacksaw actually forgot to tell you guys I've when I went through my tools I was

trying to think of the stuff that I don't use and this is one of the tools

that I had not used since I cut the bar on the solar panel and so I almost got

rid of this glad I didn't though so I actually got my second wind took a

shower and had some hot apple cider and went backing up there and finished the

other one tonight - so they're both completed but I ran out a dike or did

not get to finish sealing the second one so need to find an RV parts store that's

gonna sell that self-leveling stuff I wanted to show you this Walmart at night

because this is that Parker Arizona Walmart that I'm staying at and there's

bees everywhere first of all you got the the blue GMC which is cool but does

anybody recognize this Dodge vogue right here guys if you seen my RV evolution

video this was my first RV ever it's a Canadian made 79 dodge vogue same color

scheme and everything who actually wasn't my RV was my girlfriend's RV but

it started everything it started the RV life this RV right here so kind of

interesting seen it here in Arizona there definitely can't be too many of

those left right it's tough because there's so many interesting things there

but you don't want invaded people's privacy there's people living in their

cars and there's a van they're an RV another van there it's a home built self

built on a big huge truck it's like a tiny house but it's definitely mobile a

little door on the outside it's that weird or what man I made to talk to him

in the morning and see if I can get a tour of that that is something different

I know what you're gonna see at Walmart all right got them both installed and

sealed over there it's this one's still gonna level out a little better but

lastly gonna do is going to be to test these out see if they do any better than

the stock vents they have - all right here's my good test right

how do you have to roll my window down very much

my tanks are full I need to dump both tanks today

so far so good

I don't smell anything

it's magic Jax

that is awesome yes

feeling good now alright let's head back to quartzite

Should You Buy a CVT Transmission Car (How It Works) - with Scotty Kilmer - Duration: 4:44.

rev up your engines, believe it or not, it's snowing in Houston,

since I can't work outside now, I'm just going to talk about CVT transmissions,

now many modern cars come with CVT transmissions, it stands for, continuously variable transmissions,

they don't have gears like a normal transmission, they don't shift from first gear, second gear,

third gear, now to understand CVT transmissions,

here's a little history on transmissions in general,

now the first widely accepted transmissions in vehicles were standard transmissions,

with a standard shifter, and a clutch that you push down with your foot,

they were extremely reliable, you shifted it when you need to with your hand,

but they have one drawback, they are a pain to drive in traffic,

and then came automatic transmissions that were still geared transmissions,

but they shifted themselves automatically, which of course people in the city love,

because then they don't have to think about shifting,

they just step on the gas or the brake, it makes driving a lot easier,

now for a long time, the standard transmissions had more power, and got better gas mileage

than the automatics, but as time went on, the automatic transmissions

got more sophisticated and more complex, and more computer controlled, so that they would

get just about the same gas mileage as a standard transmission,

but that wasn't enough, with pressure from the EPA to get better and better gas mileage

from manufacturers, especially in the United States, they started making these CVT transmissions,

because they get about 6 percent or so better gas mileage than the normal automatic geared

transmissions, as you can see in this diagram, there's a

gear shift that allows you to manually change it from first, to second, to third, to fourth

gear, and there's actual gears that you shift into

by yourself, while in this diagram of an automatic transmission,

although it's a very basic one, the transmission automatically shifts itself using various

types of devices to send power to the wheels, while in this CVT diagram, you can see that

there are no real gears, it uses metal belts and various shaped drums,

in order to make the car run most efficiently, they have a lot less moving parts than any

modern automatic transmission and they get the best gas mileage for whatever speed your

going that you can possibly get, and decades and decades ago,

my grandfather who was also a mechanic, worked on CVT transmissions, but they didn't work

all that well back then, the garage was down at the bottom of a big

hill, and when he worked on these CVT transmissions,

a lot of times they just would not go up the hill,

they would slip so badly that they had to go around to flatter ground to get up, they

wouldn't make it up the hill, now metallurgy has gone a long way since then,

so the modern CVT transmissions, they'll go up the hills and stuff, but a lot of them

have a lot of lag, which many people refer to as a rubber band

effect, you step on the gas and it's like winding

up a rubber band, it doesn't go, it doesn't go, and then it

starts going, but your going to find with many modern cars

like this Nissan, they come only with CVT transmissions,

so what is there for you to do? because the CVT transmissions are cheaper

to manufacture, and get better gas mileage, your going to be seeing more and more of them

as time goes on, so if your going to get a CVT transmission,

listen to this warning, do some serious research on the models your

thinking about buying, for example, I have never yet seen a Toyota Corolla CVT

transmission go bad, not a single one yet, but I personally have seen dozens of Nissan

CVT transmissions go bad, especially in the Altimas, and when the Altimas went bad, it

was either spend $3,500 to $4,500 having them rebuild,

or buying a factory re-manufactured unit and spending $5,000 to $6,000 to have it replaced,

so in this case, if you don't mind the way the CVT's drive,

you would definitely get a Toyota Corolla and you would pass on a Nissan Altima, now

since CVT transmissions are being mass produced now, more than they ever have been,

I'm assuming in the future they will probably perfect all the problems like they did with

automatic transmissions, but me, I'm going to stick with my four speed

automatic transmission that's in this Toyota, it's got 240,000 miles on it, and it's never

been touched and it still shifts like a dream, more quick fixes on the Scotty Kilmer Channel,

1000 rockets to the mars there are the plans of them masks spacex otherwise until then

stay tuned

Miss BumBum breaks the internet with INSANE booty that rivals Kim K

The Miss BumBum star, who was crowned as having the best bum in Brazil in 2015, put her prize peach on display in her latest snap.

The Suzy Cortez Instagram snap saw the brunette stunner putting her rear centre-stage as she posed with her back to the camera.

Suzy, 27, got seriously cheeky as she donned a teeny thong bodysuit.

She had her long dark locks let loose, however she brushed the forward so as not to distract from her impressive booty.

"Youre so hot Suzy" Instagram user Fans went into metldown over the exposé, with it racking up more than 21,000 likes.

One fan exclaimed: Youre so hot Suzy, while another added: Gorgeous my dear. A third confident fan insisted: Shell be my wife..

Suzy, who says she can predict football results with her booty, was seen practicing her balls skills this week.

She posed in just a thong and Barcelona scarf as she rested a football on her behind.

We think shes definitely the hottest footy mascot ever to be honest.

Suzy also got ready for the upcoming World Cup with a sizzling Playboy Magazine shoot recently.

She dressed in bunny ears, football socks and an array of skimpy ensembles as she got ready for the big tournament.

Were sure the players would be a bit distracted if they saw these photos before hitting the pitch.

Keifer tilman the

Choosing the host of the tea party today today's the day I wonder who it's going to be my ho borrowed teacups on

Blankets Oh Sophia these tea parties are a much bigger deal the whole class goes

even the fairies good times

as

You know only students who haven't had a chance to host a party should submit their names

Sorry, I'll cross my fingers for you, Sophia and the host of the next Royal prep tea party will be

Princess Sophia and have fun

You're going to have to do better than borrowed teacups Sophia much better. I

Think it's a pretty good idea. I'll show you when we get home

Here we are what is that well amber?

Everyone will get to decorate their own teacup brilliant sounds fun right hmm. That's not the word I'd use to describe it

What word would you use?

Hmm, so I guess I need to come up with the bigger idea then Oh Sophia

That's what I've been trying to tell you do I need to sing the song again. No

cookies and cakes sounds lovely and

Definitely more

Maybe we could get mr.. Ceedric to make the tables and chairs float in the air, but are you sure you want to do?

So much, she has to baileywick, huh?

It's true all the students and teachers will be there it needs to be a great party

And it will be that sounds pretty important. We can come back another time. No no I could use a break

Maybe a little snack sounds good to me, and I know the perfect spot

it's

Beautiful look at all the butterflies

This reminds me of it, but I have a lot left to do oh

Come on one more teeny teeny weenie weenie, biscuit, okay?

But just one more or need it's too small too plain and too simple you need something like this oh

Really, isn't it a bit tiny of course? That's the idea. It looks more like a feast than a tea party

Oh Sophia you can never have too much of a good thing you could say that again James

Did you thought this was Sofia's party amber? Oh it is?

I'm just helping Sofia. What kind of cookies would you like well?

Again, what's next? Oh?

The floating tables

He will have a spell that can make things float do I have a spell that can make things float

Do I ever spell the connecting float?

This high off the ground Oh wouldn't you know it I'm afraid I already have plans huh I thought

The real sorcerer that won't be necessary what I said I had plans

I met plans to make your parties special as can be

Hmm, that's more like it. Thank you. Oh

What next I have to do this one myself, but I'll catch up with you later, okay, I'll go check on the decorations

Not the best idea you're going to let Sofia throw her own party know what I'm going to make Sophie's party even bigger oh

Boy what can I do for you princess Sofia what you need I'm hosting a tea party for my school

And I was hoping you could perform a water ballet ballet

Hello with I mean. Uh we'd love to write heads up. Funds. Are we all in

It would be our

Princess Sofia oh hi mom baileywick told me all about your party Oh

Is everything okay? Yes, I've just been really busy. It's so big. I can't believe we didn't think of it before

ready and ice

I'm strong you can't throw us one party without an ice Swan everyone expects an ice Swan ice Swan and it is

Just yeah, did you check the tables?

Yes, the tables look great, and we have enough teapots more than enough what about the cookies and cakes here they come now

and

Wait until you see the ice Swan wait

Where is the ice Swan it's on its way amber? I'm going to go check on the real swans be right back

Maybe bigger is better Princess Sofia your royal sorcerer has arrived

That's great

No it was the Swans fault silly birds should watch where they're flying

Ruins no I'm sorry honey what am I going to do? Everyone's about to show up well?

You'll just have to come up with a new plan something a little simpler

I guess but fun like the parties. I had with Ruby and Jade well

Now's your chance to throw the party you want to throw not the one everyone expects you to it won't be very big

But it'll be fun

And I know just where to have it yeah at my favorite spot in the whole castle hmm, we'll see how fun

I see the next one. Let's go in and find out

a secret garden

Welcomes my tea party

But there's just one thing what yes what plain white teacups. They will be playing for long

Everyone gets to beat their own

I like small parties, but both are just as good. I believe this might be the most charming tea party. We've ever attended

El Niño and La Niña prediction explained by climate scientists - Duration: 8:22.

Lisa: The hardest part of EL Nino forecasting is probably the uncertainty that's due to

all the other factors that are going on at the same time.

(interviewees saying ENSO/EL Nino/La Nina montaged together)

Andrew: Basically, ENSO is that cycle between El Nino and La Nina

Michelle: ENSO stands for the El Nino Southern Oscillation and it is what we call a coupled

climate mode,

Miriam: For ENSO, that coupling is between the slow-moving ocean and faster-moving atmosphere.

Michelle: One of the reasons that it is important for ENSO to couple is that's why it lasts

so long there's this feedback between the ocean and the atmosphere to make it what it

is.

Miriam: Because it lasts so long, ENSO has far reaching effects across the world.

Elizabeth: El Nino is a global phenomena.

However, its impacts are at a local scale.

Andrew: Lots of impacts upon Australia during El Nino and La Nina.

So It really is a time that offers a lot of threats to both public safety and also our

farming communities as well.

Elizabeth: It has several impacts on food security.

You lose crops, you cannot transport the products and the access roads are damaged.

Miriam: So before we go too far, let's talk a little about how ENSO actually works.

Normally, or under 'Normal Conditions', the western tropical pacific is warmer than

in the eastern Pacific, which creates a gradient of high pressure in the east and low pressure

in the west.

This whole cycle?

It's called the Walker Circulation, describing how these equatorial winds, flow from the

high pressure down to the low pressure.

Ken: So the sea surface temperature along the equatorial pacific and the temperature

below the surface that is where the memory or the inertia of the whole system lies.

Miriam: And those sub-surface temperatures, can be shifted by things called Kelvin waves.

Elizabeth: The frequency and intensity of the Kelvin waves.

These waves are responsible for the transportation of the warm mass.

Miriam: A Kelvin wave travels from west to east along the equator below the surface of

the water, pushing down the separation between cool deep water and warmer surface water,

bringing warmer surface temperatures into the east.

Michelle: On occasion it is weather or this, you know, sub-seasonal phenomenon that cause

the winds to essentially kick-off, you know, an oceanic Kelvin wave which then can result

in an El Nino.

Lisa: So, for example if you have an El Nino event and you got warm anomalies in the eastern

Pacific and that weakened Walker Circulation, that's allowing heat content to be lost

effectively subsurface cold anomalies in the western pacific.

Miriam: And to reverse it?

Lisa: if there's enough energy left in that sub surface signal after that current event

is gone it can come to the surface and be the trigger for the next positive feedback—and

say into a La Nina event.

Miriam: In a La Nina event, the temperature of the Eastern Pacific decreases compared

to normal, strengthening the Walker Circulation.

So, we know what's actually happening, but how did we figure it all out in the first

place?

Lisa: The real game changer was the very simple model that Mark Cane and Steve Zebiak developed

in the 1980s.

Steve: The work was not particularly well accepted initially,

Mark: There was some tough months in there when we're, you know, our forecast was going

up and the world was not.

Miriam: And this was definitely a breakthrough in forecasting.

We had a working model, but it was really simple and eventually a model that simple

could be wrong.

Since then, a ton of work has gone into the different types of models and forecasting.

Michelle: The development right now with respect to ENSO is on the models, particularly on

improving the dynamical models.

Miriam: Okay, so there are two main types of models climate scientist use to predict

ENSO. statistical models –- that use all the historical information we've got about

ENSO to predict what'll happen in the future and dynamical models – that are based on

what we know about the physics of the earth.

Michelle: These are global climate circulation models that are run on big supercomputers

and they ingest tons of data from satellites and buoys and various other locations to try

and essentially initialize the model and then run it forward using the physical equations

that are our understanding of the atmosphere.

Miriam: Until recently, though, those dynamical models weren't as good as the statistical

models.

In a sense models based on statistics were just easier.

Lisa: Well the advantage of those [statistical models] is that they're a lot faster to

run that.

The characteristic shape of ENSO events will be captured.

The disadvantage is that it's very hard for them to distinguish one type of event from

another type of event.

To get that inter-event variability.

Andrew: The dynamical models, even some statistical models now are better than they've ever

been and really, I think, we have to trust them a lot more these days

Miriam: Though the models are improving - there are still a lot of challenges with making

an accurate prediction.

And that starts with getting good data.

Steve: To do a prediction you have to say something about what is the initial state

of the system that you're then trying to forecast the subsequent evolution of.

Mark: That depends on what the background state is, by which we just mean the climatological

state that varies over the course of the year from spring to summer to fall to winter.

If you don't get that right, then you're not going to get the predictions exactly right.

Miriam: A good model needs to know the conditions of the atmosphere, like how surface winds

are moving and how much rain there is in the equatorial pacific.

And it needs to have good information on the temperature across the ocean.

But sometimes, even that isn't enough.

Michelle: There can be some debate over how predictable is ENSO really.

Lisa: Certainly one of the limitations to predictability is the sensitivity to initial

conditions—it's also referred to as chaos—and with respect to something like an El Nino

forecast or a seasonal forecast when you're looking out that far, chaos can just refer

to the weather.

Miriam: And because of that, it is hard to tell how much more forecasting skill can improve.

Tony: For the last 10 years there's been very little improvement in the prediction

models.

It's possible that we can get a little bit better, but we believe there's an inherent

predictability limit.

And we may be near that limit.

Miriam: This gets especially muddied when we start to ask what is going to happen to

ENSO as the climate changes.

Mark: It may be that global warming is changing the background state in such a way as to change

the character of ENSO some, where it's going to peak.

Michelle: I think we are reliant on the models to some extent to understand whether climate

change will impact ENSO, but when you're in the model world, you better also have some

very good physical mechanisms to explain why El Nino to La Nina will become more frequent.

Tony: it's very debatable whether it will start having a systematic effect on the behavior

of ENSO.

Some models say yes.

Some models say not much.

Michelle: And one of the concerns I have is that climate change could impact ENSO but

it would take us, you know, a 100 years, 200 years to actually in the observations see

that.

Lisa: What we can say though is that some of the regional climate impacts may be altered

because of climate change.

So, in particular places that tend to get warmer, places that tend to have drought that

could be exacerbated by a warmer climate.

Miriam: And that's a legitimate worry, because ENSO has real, sometimes dangerous, effects

all over the world.

Mark: You can get all this rearranging heating in an El Nino event for the atmosphere and

that affects everything all over the globe Mark: We have a jargon word, teleconnection,

which only means that things are connected over a large region.

Miriam: And for ENSO those connections lead to a cascade of global impacts.

(overlapping voices describing impacts across the earth)

Ken: The difference in the impacts can be very very strong depending on the patterns

and the timing of the, of the events.

Miriam: At the heart of the story of ENSO prediction is finding ways to help society

prepare.

Michelle: We try to uncover, and sort of tease out, what is weather and what is climate.

Tony: You learn that ENSO affects the climate.

Therefore I must be interested in ENSO in order to be interested in seeing what governs

the climate Miriam: Because what governs the climate,

governs fundamental aspects of our everyday lives.
