Liverpool 3-0 Man City: Player Ratings

The whole Liverpool team shone as the Reds produced an incredible collective performance to take a huge 3-0 first-leg lead against Man City.

Loris Karius – 8 (out of 10).

The German, somewhat incredibly, had precious little to do on a night he was under scrutiny with a City bombardment on his goal expected.

Did what he had to with minimal fuss and constantly looked to distribute quickly, which was helpful as the Reds stormed City in the first half.

The lack of distance on his kicks in the second half was slightly frustrating but nothing costly.

Trent Alexander-Arnold – 9.5 Man of the Match.

This was the biggest night of the teenager's career, especially under added pressure from recent struggles, but he put those behind him and rose to the occasion with a magnificent display.

Was pinpointed as the potential weak link pre-match but showed no such signs as he defended excellently, clever in his positional play and winning the one-on-one battle with Leroy Sane who saw his influence restricted.

Was also crisp in possession and picked his moments to support the attack with impressive maturity.

A man-of-the-match display on such a stage handed a timely reminder just what a talent this boy is.

Dejan Lovren – 8.5

Recalled to the lineup as the last centre-back standing, Lovren had an excellent night on his return as the Reds posted a vital clean sheet.

Was simple and effective with no-nonsense defending all night, clearing his lines decisively, winning key headers and making some vital blocks—one particularly crucial one as Kevin De Bruyne lurked to shoot.

Exactly the sort of simplified role that suits his game and deserves full credit for doing it brilliantly.

Virgil van Dijk – 8.5

It is games like these that the towering Dutchman was bought for and he delivered a fantastic performance leading the back line.

Won everything that came his way in air to defend the box with desire and determination, and showed great awareness to danger to cover well using his impressive recovery pace.

Most pleasing was undoubtedly his organisation and leadership at the back, particularly second half when the Reds were under the cosh.

Completely showed why the money was invested.

Andy Robertson – 9.

Robertson just continues to go from strength to strength, with this another fantastic performance from the left-back.

Shone in the league win over City in January and did again here as relentless marauding presence taking the game to Guardiola's side first half—one lung-bursting run and shot was incredible.

Defended impressively second half when on the back foot, doing a great job matching Raheem Sterling for pace and giving the ex-Red very little route into the game.

A complete performance from a complete left-back.

Jordan Henderson – 8.

The captain had a huge job on his hands trying to retain control of midfield and provide valuable protection to the back four, but he did the job well after a nervy start.

Backed up the sterling efforts of James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain by buzzing around collecting second balls in midfield, and kept things simple in possession to get the danger men on the ball.

Picked up a yellow card which sees him miss the second leg, which was a blemish on an otherwise very good night.

James Milner – 8.5

There were a few concerns with whether Milner could cope with two starts in quick succession but the vice-captain put any fears to bed with a monstrous performance.

Set the tone for the midfield battle from the off as he constantly won the ball back with the Reds on the front foot, doing a particularly great job buzzing around to stop De Bruyne playing.

Played vital roles in the first two goals with a great ball to release Mohamed Salah for the first and winning a crunching tackle which landed at the feet of Oxlade-Chamberlain who rifled home.

Always a wise head and great influence on such occasions and was so again here.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – 9.

A big performance was needed from the man becoming Liverpool's midfield driving force and boy did he deliver.

Was Man of the Match in the 4-3 league win over City and clearly took confidence from that display into this game.

Bulldozed through the visitors' midfield time and again first half to make things happen in the final third with some great runs, and hit an absolute thunderbolt of a goal to make it 2-0.

Also did his defensive duties impressively, providing key support to Alexander-Arnold with Sane and David Silva before moving into the attack second half where he filled in well.

Sadio Mane – 8.5

You always need your big players and main match-winners to perform on the big occasions and the Senegalese delivered at Anfield.

Scored the all-important third with a great header after some clever movement, but apart from his goal he impressed as he was a constant threat when the Reds were on top.

Had less influence after the break naturally, but still looked lively on the break and also never stopped working to dig in and contribute to the tireless defensive effort.

Mohamed Salah – 8.5

This was billed as a head-to-head between the Egyptian King and Player of the Year rival contender De Bruyne, and Salah outshone his main competitor at Anfield.

Pep Guardiola deployed Aymeric Laporte simply to stop Salah but the No.

11 was simply too sharp and too difficult to pin down as he ran riot drifting from the right.

Opened the scoring with a typical Salah goal being in the right place at the right time, and also provided a great cross for Mane's header.

A real dampener comes in the injury that forced him off after half-time—hopefully it is nothing serious.

Roberto Firmino – 8.

Needed the Brazilian to lead from the front to stop City settling into rhythm at Anfield, and he did so superbly with all of his typical industry and craft on show.

Incredible work rate was in full effect for Salah's opener as he made what was the most important toe-poke of his career to prod the ball in the Egyptian's direction.

Provided a great platform to spring attacks all first half while also working relentlessly, which makes him such a key component of Klopp's system.

Starting XI Average Rating: 8.6

Substitutes. Gini Wijnaldum (on for Salah, 52′) – 7.

On into midfield, Wijnaldum had a big responsibility to help solidify the middle of the park with Oxlade-Chamberlain moving into the attack.

Did a reliable job working hard to plug gaps City looked to exploit while also keeping things simple in possession.

Dominic Solanke (on for Firmino, 71′) – 6. One nice burst and dangerous ball across to find Mane who couldn't arrive in time to convert.

Manager. Jurgen Klopp – 10.

Had his hands tied from before the first whistle due to the untimely injury crisis, which made it a night all about making the best of what was at his disposal.

And he did so spectacularly, setting up the team perfectly tactically and mentally to produce the brave display called for one of the most astonishing for halves of football Anfield has likely ever witnessed.

Settled his side at half-time and reset the Reds to manage the game after the break, and used his limited subs well to help see the game out—with Wijnaldum shoring up midfield and Solanke and Moreno offering fresh legs.

It says everything about the way Klopp has this Reds team playing that Pep Guardiola changed what has led him to the Premier League title by going with a less expansive and gung-ho team.

A perfect night for the boss who we are incredibly lucky to have.

Liverpool produced a performance for the ages to open up a 3-0 first-leg lead over Man City in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Fast Starts & Fantastic Presses.

Theres no question about the best part of this Liverpool team—flooding forward at pace and in numbers.

That might have been difficult to do against one of the best sides around, but City had no answer to the Reds rampant start to the match—and once confidence was up, there was no stopping them.

The crowd were already up for the game, but a few fast breaks and chances on goal was all it took to really ignite the atmosphere.

Weve seen it before: the players respond to the supporters encouragement at Anfield, and on a long-awaited big European occasion, that went double.

Liverpool starting on the front foot, offensive-minded and relentless, is a sight to behold.

And it has given the Reds a perfect first-leg scoreline.

Trents Big Test.

Pre-game, defensive injuries had caused Jurgen Klopp a headache, and some supporters were vocal about their biggest worry: Trent Alexander-Arnold against Leroy Sane.

They neednt have troubled themselves.

The right-back was utterly magnificent, faultless throughout the 90, consistent, composed and disciplined.

Sanes pace was matched, the flight of the ball on a relentless diagonal out to the German was well-judged and the maturity he showed when one-on-one was sublime.

He made tackles and got a toe on the ball when he could, and sent Sane back toward his own half of the pitch when he couldnt.

A superb display, one of the men of the match without question, and a game which elevates his standing and self-confidence at a time when the senior contender for his position has returned to fitness.

Klopp vs. Pep.

The lineup picked by Klopp had no surprises; Pep Guardiolas contained one—Ilkay Gundogan over Raheem Sterling.

That selection from the Spanish boss was aimed at controlling the centre of the park, but tactically Klopp was spot-on with his own selection and City had very little to change the course of the match, even with more possession.

Clearly, plenty of work has gone in on the Melwood training pitches over organisation off the ball, team shape out of possession and when to break.

The calming presence of Virgil van Dijk continues to play a huge role for the Reds, but Klopps game plan again overall was precisely what was required.

Credit to the boss for getting it right, and credit to the players for executing it.

Now they just have to do it all over again in a week!.

Game of Two Halves.

If the first half was all-action, blistering offensive shenanigans at its finest, the second 45 was a new Liverpool: resilient, composed, full of self-belief, impenetrable.

Liverpool have been great going forward for some time—but a shambles at the back.

That viewpoint is quickly being rewritten, and this big a stage was an enormous test of that newfound ability to impress at both ends of the pitch.

Doubtless some supporters still felt an inch away from disaster, that a 3-0 lead would crumble to an inevitable 3-2, or even 3-3, late in the match.

But City barely had a sniff.

This was a coming-of-age performance, one which must be held up and repeated now, if Liverpool are to truly regain their place among Englands and Europes elite on a longer-term basis.

Two Down, Two to Go.

A massive month for the Reds has started perfectly: late Premier League victory over Crystal Palace at the weekend, now a monstrous lead in the Champions League.

Still to come in this season-defining spell are two more matches, with the Merseyside derby at Everton next up before the second leg in Manchester.

Klopps anger at the timing of the Everton match is clearly still in place and hell have to decide whether to rotate, risking derby defeat, or whether to trust his players can cope with three full-on fixtures in the space of a week.

Jordan Henderson will certainly start at the weekend—his booking late on at Anfield rules him out of the second leg, meaning its imperative Emre Can returns to full fitness by then.

Nathaniel Clyne may see game time, one or more of the front three might be rested at Goodison Park—hopefully no long-lasting damage is done to Mo Salah, subbed off in the second half—and, who knows, a central defender may even declare themselves available.

Two down, two even bigger ones to come.

Steven Gerrard hailed a "perfect" performance as Liverpool took control of their Champions League quarter-final against Manchester City.

Mohamed Salah, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Sadio Mane netted at Anfield as Jurgen Klopp's men beat the Premier League pacesetters 3-0 in the first leg.

And former Reds captain Gerrard, asked for a word to describe the Merseysiders' display, told BT Sport: "Perfect.

Defensively, to a man, I thought the back four were stunning and the goalkeeper is getting better and better.

I think Jurgen Klopp will be delighted.

City didn't get the run of the ball and I thought they lacked a bit in the final third but at home they're more than capable of getting goals.".

Rio Ferdinand said the German got the better of City boss Pep Guardiola in the tactical battle and also questioned the quality of the visitors' defending.

Former England defender Ferdinand said: Guardiola got his tactics wrong.

Manchester City, when forced to defend deep in their own half, they struggle.

Up the other end of the pitch, keeping teams penned back, they're great at that.

But on the edge of their box, they're a very different team.

Their defence were a weakness today..

On Oxlade-Chamberlain, Ferdinand added: He's gathering momentum at a crucial part of the season and it's testament to him.

I've always liked him in this position, someone who can get the ball, break from midfield lines and cause problems.

It's just about decision-making..

Another former England international, Frank Lampard, said of the former Arsenal player: There are not many people who can open up a game with pace, direction and end product.

End product was always a question mark but he's shown tonight he's got it.

City never got to grips with the game.

Liverpool had no fear, a perfect gameplan and pressed at the right time..

Meanwhile, Gerrard condemned fans who threw bottles and fireworks at the City coach as it arrived at Anfield.

The Reds had earlier issued a statement apologising to their opponents after the vehicles was damaged by missiles thrown as it arrived at Anfield.

Gerrard added: Scenes like this sour the night.

We want a great atmosphere and to make it hostile but certain individuals have overstepped the mark and that's bang out of order..

what I do like about her is she wasn't going to let anything hold her

back and she was on her own. This young lady I'm incredibly

impressed with. Her grandmother called me and said I have a young lady that lives with me

and I need to get her a smile that doesn't make her look like she

has neglected her smile. They actually pulled two of her teeth to get her into

braces now they can't afford the implants

this is a very very, uh charismatic

young lady and I think that she smiles all the time

This young lady come to me from San Diego

I was proud of what we did for her and I was able to work with her

We worked with her to get it done. This is one that started

with me probably 2 years ago. Came to me and said
