Youtube daily report Apr 6 2018

My Grandmother, Axie Jackson Powell, died at 99 having lived a blessed yet tragic life.

As a young girl she lost her Father and two stepfathers to illness.

Her mother, struggled to raise four children alone and out of desperation,

put Axie and two of her siblings into an orphanage.

Axie grew up separated from her mother.

The history of adoption is as old as humankind, with family members

commonly raising children orphaned by death, or war, or economic destruction.

The middle ages introduced the concept of the orphanage when babies were left

at the door of monasteries and were then raised in the institution of the church.

But much of what the world knows about adoption, and how to protect orphans,

actually stems from the orphan trains of the U.S. in the late 1800s.

The American Civil War and an increase in immigration brought orphanage over-crowding

and huge numbers of homeless children roaming the streets of east coast urban cities.

A group of religious leaders spearheaded a solution by shipping

orphaned children on trains to the rural west.

Over the next 70 years, as many as 250,000 orphaned, abandoned, or homeless children

were placed on trains and sent to western, rural, farming, foster families.

It was the largest mass relocation of children to ever occur

and helped establish the foster care system in America.

While many lost children were introduced into families where discipline and love

gave them a chance for a reasonable life,

some of these children were indentured and exploited, rather than adopted,

and were made to become farm laborers and household servants.

Because of the orphan train social experiment, laws to protect children from abuse were developed.

The best example was the Minnesota adoption law of 1917 which required

background checks of families and careful follow-up after placement.

This effort, to ensure the best interest of the child by encouraging

and monitoring foster homes and adoption, spread throughout the country

and parentless children went to orphanages only when other options failed.

Although this societal responsibility to children spread globally,

families in the U.S. presently adopt more children than the rest of the world combined.

That said, right now there are 110,000 foster children in the U.S.

eligible and waiting to be adopted,

and every year 23,000 children age out of foster care without having found a permanent family.

There are plenty of Axies out there.

The gift of "family" by fostering or adopting is a win-win proposition.

April TBR, SDFF, and Whale Watching! - Duration: 11:18.

Today's video will be about several random things that aren't related at all,

but they're not long enough to put in their own videos.

Hello, I'm Rogan and welcome to a very random video today.

First, I'm still mad at myself for doing this. Um. So I recently posted my March wrap up of books I read.

I also forgot about something I was planning to do, so I filmed that.

Then forgot about it again. So… I'm going to give you those clips from that here.

After I filmed, I realized I completely forgot I wanted to do something new. Right, so I'm doing that now.

I saw it on chelsadollingreads, on her channel. I like that idea.

What she does is a TBR jar.

She'll draw three book names from it, and has to read two of those three each month.

I put all of mine in here. I have, I don't know, 30 book names in here? I'm not sure.

So I'm going to draw them, then I'm going to go get the books and show them.

Upstream…is back there.

Lord of Snow and Shadows, okay.

Profiles in Gay and Lesbian Courage. Okay, I'll be right back.

This is probably the most random you could get with the books in that mug.

[Upstream] It's an advance copy. It's a story set in Alaska. We'll see.

[Profiles in Gay & Lesbian Courage]

Eight profiles of men and women who changed history for gay and lesbian people.

Though I'd just say queer people. Anyway.

[Lord of Snow and Shadows] Sorry it's so hard to see. But yeah, this is part of a series, so…

I don't know if I will commit to reading this one, because a series.

So that's my first three books from my mug. And we will see how that goes.

That's a thing that I will be doing from now on for my monthly wrap ups.

So we'll see how that new thing goes, since I already forgot about it for the first time. Okay. Next thing.

I… Like I mentioned in one of my videos a while ago, I went to the Seattle Deaf Film Festival.

That was this past weekend. I enjoyed it, I had a lot of fun. I want to tell you what I did on the weekend.

So I arrived in the area really early, like noon, 1ish. I was planning to meet a friend, but plans were dropped.

So I went to a bookstore, Elliott Bay Book Company, in Capitol Hill. And I ended up getting two books.

But… [shrugs]

They were both discounted so, sure!

And this one is already on my TBR, so I thought why not buy it while I'm here.

After that, I went and chilled in a coffee place, working for a little bit on video stuff for YouTube.

Then I went to my first block for films, UK films.

They had a kind of comedy about a relationship. A woman who suspects her husband of cheating on her,

so she follows him. Drama happens. It was actually really good. I enjoyed that one.

Another one was a music video. The director is someone I know, so that was cool. Nice to see someone I know.

Third, ah yes. If you're familiar with The Limping Chicken, you will know the author of that, *Charlie Swinbourne.

He was the one who wrote this.

It was several comedy sketches. Kind of like a deaf SNL, kind of.

Next… Ah yes, it was about a deaf man and his struggle with a hearing family where no one signs.

You know, the standard deaf struggle story. It was good, but just. I'm honestly tired of seeing films like this.

I want to see more films that show authentic deaf lives, not "oh, I'm struggling with my family, blah blah."

Yes, we do need to show that story, but also… I'm getting tired of it.

The final two that were shown at the end of that block.

One was an interview with Rachel Shenton, if I'm spelling that right.

She was the writer of The Silent Child, which won an Oscar recently.

The interview with her was about her background, her history, why she got involved in the deaf community,

and so on. A little bit more about HER as a person.

Then the second one was The Silent Child.

SO good. It deserves that Oscar, absolutely deserves that Oscar. Yes.

After UK Films finished, I had a little bit of time in between, so I went and hung out with Jules (Dameron)

and Josh (Castille) at their temporary living place while they were here for the weekend.

The second block was Reverse Polarity. A short TV show produced by DPAN, and directed by Jules Dameron.

I am SO excited for you to see it. How you can see it is by going to dpan.tv

It will come out on April 12th, and on every Thursday after that for six weeks.

The show is about two different people who have their own struggles. They're looking for love… It's SO good.

Be warned, this is not for children, it's not.

It's mature. It's mature. But. Yes, we need more content like this. I said the same thing about This Close.

We need more things like this. Yes. I'm excited for you to see it. Worth it.

Reverse Polarity finished, and they had a panel afterwards.

They needed a film person to shoot for them, so that was me. I was working after watching.

I enjoyed that, it was really fun working with them.

Just filming the panel, I will link that video when it's uploaded. I'll link it below.

After Reverse Polarity, the panel, we went to an afterparty, we had a lot of fun.

That was it for me, for the festival. But really, it started on Friday night and went to Sunday afternoon, I believe.

They had a whole list of different documentaries, narratives, music videos, and so on.

A lot of different films, it's great. I'm really looking forward to seeing this continue.

So that's it for the Seattle Deaf Film Festival and me.

Next thing, my family recently went whale watching in the Everett area.

That was really fun, about three hours on the water, going around and looking for whales.

And we found them! We saw three, no, three or four whales.

We saw 10 bald eagles, MANY harbor seals, saw a harbor porpoise, plenty of cormorants, and so on.

It was really nice, a fun trip.

Pretty cool! That obviously wasn't all of the trip. We saw the whales surfacing over the water a lot more than that.

We did see a tail only twice. That very, very, very short clip was the only one I got.

But the other one we saw was very clear, a full tail coming out, so that was cool!

Okay, one more thing I want to add.

I'm SO excited. Earlier, on Monday, I bought a new camera. A Panasonic LUMIX G7. YES.

I was able to get it for less than $500 on eBay, so yesss. It will be arriving next week, on Tuesday.

So I'm really excited for that, and finally having a nice camera that I can SEE MYSELF IN.

I don't know if I will continue using this setup. Maybe I will occasionally, but…

I will have to figure out a whole new setup with my new, beautiful camera.

But yeah, that is a thing that is happening.

I will end today, and I hope you enjoyed this little, kind of update? Let me know…things down below.

Morgan J. Freeman personally apologized to Mexico for Trump's 'Egregious' Military Border Order - Duration: 2:08.

Morgan J. Freeman personally apologized to Mexico for Trump's 'Egregious' Military

Border Order

American film director Morgan J. Freeman personally apologized to Mexico on Wednesday after President

Donald Trump ordered National Guard troops to the southern border.

In a tweet, Freeman said the "egregious step" amounted to an "ego stunt" that

had left him "embarrassed" to be an American.

"Dear Mexico, I apologize for the egregious step taken by our President today," he wrote.

"I hope you know his views do not reflect those of the majority of Americans, and I

hope his little "ego stunt" will be over soon.

Embarrassed to be an American today."

Freeman made the comments after Trump signed an official memorandum on Wednesday to deploy

the National Guard to the U.S.-Mexico border, claiming that "the security of the United

States is imperiled by a drastic surge of illegal activity on the southern border."

"During the administrations of Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, the National

Guard provided support for efforts to secure our southern border," the memo says.

"The crisis at our southern border once again calls for the National Guard to help

secure our border and protect our homeland."

President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he would order National Guard troops to the

U.S.-Mexican border, hours after leading transition policy adviser Ken Blackwell told Fox Business

Network that sending troops would show a coherent Trump policy of treating illegal immigration

as a national security and homeland security issue, using all the levers of American foreign

and domestic power to enact his policy.

The president had been considering deploying the U.S. military to the border as a caravan

of Central Americans are traveling through Mexico, approaching the American border.

On Tuesday, President Trump announced that until a border wall is built, he believes

he should send troops to secure the border, and he was exploring options with Defense

Secretary James Mattis.

The White House announced late that evening that the president was specifically mobilizing

the National Guard to take on this task.

Olympic 2020 in Japan: What Japanese want the foreigners to do. - Duration: 9:32.

I want foreigners to try our good food from Osaka.

I want people to take that back home.

let it grow and bring it back to Japan.

Hey guys we went to a special event called Brilliant Star Decorations.

They did a special part which was the world lolita collection.

Which means Lolita brands from all across the world came

to display their cool stuff.

There were quite a lot of interesting people there and

we're gonna go and ask them, what Japan should do during the Olympics

and what foreigners should ENJOY

when they come during the Olympics to Japan.

There might be some cool ideas of what you should do when you come to Tokyo

next time so

Please take notes and don't forget, if you are new, please subscribe to our channel.

So you don't miss any future videos that we do with Ask Japanese.

So now let's go and Ask Japanese.

I want people to know the good aspects of Japan.

Like the way Japanese people care for others.

And going into stores here in Japan you can see

we have a special way of dealing with each other kindly.

Our culture is very exciting and of course,

I want people to know about other parts of our culture.

I hope they will think "I am glad I came" and "I am glad I got to meet Japanese people."

I hope they can have many experiences like that.

So don't just enjoy sports, also enjoy food and such.

I am from Hyogo.

That's close to Osaka and the food there is very delicious.

I think some foreigners come for the food.

If you come to Osaka please come and try the tasty food there.

When I talk normally I will also talk in the Osaka dialect.

Don't just come to Tokyo, go down to the Kansai prefecture too!

Yes but not just Kansai, all the other places too.

There are many wonderful places, so not just Tokyo.

If foreigners have the time to travel, I'd like them to go there.

I think Tokyo is interesting, of course...

I was however born in Nagoya...

I hope foreigners can come outside of Tokyo and into the countryside.

We have a special food culture out in Nagoya.

Visitors don't have to go on a gourmet tour but...

outside of the main capital cities...

You can really enjoy how people connect with each other

and taste the good food.

I want people to enjoy all of Japan.

Just be aware of your manners when you come.

Enjoy the food.

And enjoy Japanese hospitality. - Hospitality!

I want foreigners to have their hearts touched by it.

Until the Olympics in 2020 we want to continue doing fashion events like these.

If we can we will announce the events around that time early.

We would like to to come to the Olympics and to our fashion events too.

We asked your visitors and many said they would like to have a fashion event

for them time when the Olympics are on. - Really?

We want to make it possible! Let's try our best!

Cathy you need to work hard too. - I will do my best!

Let's do our best!

I think there are some wonderful cultures abroad.

but there is a culture you can only find in Japan.

This includes anime, music and fashion.

I want people to bring that back home.

then let it grow and bring it back to Japan

So foreigners should enjoy Japanese culture and bring it back to Japan?

How shall they bring it back?

In case of Lolita fashion I would say...

Learn about Lolita fashion in Japan...

Then express that in your country, maybe in a different way.

I think that would be great.

How do you want people from abroad to enjoy Japan?

During the Olympics a lot of foreigners will come and visit.

But ... saying it like that Japan is actually quite save.

I want people to feel secure and enjoy Japan.

Take lots of fun pictures, do lots of shopping, and have a good time here.

But if you wear clothes like there, people might secretly take pictures.

I want foreigners to ask for pictures first before taking them.

No sneaky pictures!

Yes please.

Japanese people often point out visitors as foreigners.

Sometimes foreigners will act unlawful.

I want people to respect other Japanese people.

When we wear clothes like this, people will be aggressively taking pictures.

But we will also think other foreigners look very cool.

I want Japanese people and foreigners to mind their manners.

I want visitors to really mind their manners when they come.

And during the Olympics, people need to take their own garbage home...

And in our fashion circles, taking pictures...

is something you can do after asking the person first.

I want people to know about these rules.

I want to be able to communicate with foreigners.

I want to learn more languages.

But also with using gestures and showing things, we can communicate.

Some things will be communicated without words.

Enjoy those things.

But most of all I want people to enjoy wearing Lolita fashion.

The lolita fashion model Aoki Misako said she wants us all to wear Lolita fashion

for the Olympic opening ceremony.

It would be nice if we could all do that one day.

What should Japan do 2020?

In Japan we have many doll cultures and shops.

I want to show it to people.

Is there anything you want people to do when they come to Japan?

I think foreigners are very tall.

So please take care not to bump your head when you go on the train.

Nice one.

I have once seen one person getting caught in the ventilator on the train.

So please be careful.

The summer in Japan is VERY hot, so please be careful of your health.

Those were all our questions. Thank you. - Thank you Cathy.

So there were some ideas of how you can enjoy Japan when you come

during the Olympics.

The Olympics are coming up and I must say the whole of Japan is very excited.

Everyone is looking forward to the visitors coming in.

Hopefully you are among the people who will come, maybe during

the Olympics and enjoy Japanese culture.

If there is anything you think other people should enjoy if they come

during the Olympics, then leave a comment.

maybe someone else will pick it up and find it and use it as reference

when they come.

I wish you a lovely day. Don't forget to subscribe if you are new to our channel.

If you have been here before with our Ask Japanese channel...

Don't forget to leave a like on the way out. Thank you for watching.

Catch you soon on Ask Japanese...

So, Lolita fashion and Gothic fashion lovers all around the world come together

and celebrate their unique styles and find out about different brands

and different styles. It was inspiring to see a different take on lolita fashion,

and this event gives Lolita fashion lovers a chance to find a new brand,

new friends and a new style.

Brilliant Star Decorations do more events during the year,

so check our links to find out when the next event is

and if you can maybe take part and become enchanted.
