Louisiana Bill To Hypercriminalize Pipeline Protests Is "Backfiring" - Duration: 9:51.

Welcome back to the Real News Network.

I'm Dharna Noor joining you from Baltimore.

I'm here with a lawyer from New Orleans.

We're discussing a bill currently being considered in the Louisiana House that would criminalize

all protests against pipelines and other, quote, critical infrastructure.

Today I'm joined with Bill Quigley, who is a professor of law and a human rights lawyer,

a civil rights lawyer, based in New Orleans.

Thanks so much for joining us again, Bill.

Thank you.

So we've been talking about this bill which seems to particularly be targeting people

who are protesting the Bayou Bridge pipeline, which is an Energy Transfer Partners pipeline

being built in Louisiana.

And you know, it's said that this is going to be helping security for that pipeline.

But the company doing security for the pipeline aren't exactly paying by the rules.

TigerSwan are the security firm infamous for their military-style actions against water

protectors and protesters at Standing Rock.

So yes, TigerSwan, I think, is well known as a really rogue operation not only provides

security but surveillance, and they're proud of it.

And they target particularly First Amendment activities of people, protests, civil disobedience

and the like.

And they applied for a license to practice in Louisiana.

But the Louisiana licensing board did not approve their their application because of

all the trouble that they got into in the Dakotas where they operated in a very aggressive

and very illegal fashion.

But not only just on the ground.

They didn't even seek permits in the Dakotas when they did this work initially.

And so Louisiana said, we're not going to, we're not going to give you a permit right

off the bat because we want to hear more about what happened up there.

And so that they have been denied.

Temporarily they're still appealing.

So they're trying to get back in but at the very same time that they were denied.

Right after they were denied, an employee of the parent company tried to open up another

security company in Louisiana.

And she didn't, she didn't explain that she was an employee of TigerSwan, and in fact

hid that on her application, and open, said that her headquarters was a little rent-a-cubbyhole

office at a place in Lafayette, Louisiana that just rents offices by the hour, essentially,

to people.

And it only by the hard work of the Louisiana licensing board were they able to find out

that in fact this woman was TigerSwan.

And she, she even named her company LTSW.

And when the investigators for that licensing group actually took her sworn statement when

they first asked her about that, she admitted at this point, you know, as she had to because

they had already found out that she who is an employee of Tiger Swan and she didn't even

know what the initials stood for.

But you could see that it easily was Louisiana TigerSwan.

And she tried to open up this company and let them come in by the back door because

they weren't being allowed to come in by the front door.

Fortunately the state has caught that, and there they are.

They haven't allowed that to come through yet either.

But that's an ongoing fight here.

And we know that TigerSwan doesn't play by the rules, that they do surveillance.

They follow people, they harass people, they post absolutely false testimony about people

on social media and like.

They do whatever they feel like doing in terms of trying to serve the masters who pay them.

And so that is just another extension, I mean, that's another part of the whole campaign

by the Bayou Bridge pipeline and the petrochemical industry to silence and intimidate people

who would dare say this is not in our state interests.

This is not in the public interest.

And we're going to do whatever we can to stop them.

So much of the focus on this bill has been about how it would impact people who are protesting

the Bayou Bridge pipeline.

But again, you're in New Orleans, where last month the City Council approved the construction

of a 210 million dollar natural gas power plant.

That plant will be in a majority black and Vietnamese neighborhood.

And you're, I understand, getting ready to challenge the process for approving that plant.

So the bill we're talking about is aimed at pipelines, it's said, but do those resisting

this power plant have anything to fear as well?

So the the critical infrastructure is focused on people who actually go on to property near

or around the, the facilities, or the pipeline if it would be.

And so yes, the people who are protesting the, the placement of this new Entergy plant

I'm sure are going to plan on some protest on the site.

They're going to plan on and probably have some people who will engage in direct action,

being willing to risk arrest by trespassing and that sort of stuff.

So they will be subject to these hypercriminal penalties if, in fact, this bill passes the

legislature.

The important thing is that we had these, a series of public hearings about this.

The Vietnamese community came out very, very strong.

New Orleans has a very large Vietnamese community.

African-American homeowners and neighborhood associations came a very, very strong and

against this.

And we were able to find out that in fact the energy company actually paid actors to

come and be paid supporters, to come wear orange T-shirts and to give testimony in support

of this, of these efforts.

In addition to that, this is going to be a challenge because they held one of the very

important meetings at a place where people couldn't get in.

It was a very small meeting room and people couldn't get in.

And the people who couldn't get in were primarily the Vietnamese, the opponents and the like,

where the supporters were in there already, which is a pattern that was practiced again

and again.

It happened in our big city council meeting, where there was a long line of members of

the public trying to get in because they knew space was at a premium.

And just before they let the public in they opened a back door and let dozens and dozens

of supporters of the energy plant in.

And so it's going to be challenged.

This is an effort that's going by 350 Louisiana, Earthjustice, the Sierra Club, the Deep South

Center at Dillard, and a number of other environmental and environmental justice organizations.

So we're getting ready to take them to court, saying that the whole process is deeply flawed

because they're ignoring open meetings law, they're ignoring, really, the will of the

public.

And it was clear that this decision was wired in advance by Entergy.

And so we're hoping that the courts will set that whole process aside.

New Orleans is in the process right now of transition from one city council to another.

We had elections already.

They're going to take office in the next couple of weeks.

So we hope that we'll be successful in setting that aside and making them do that over again,

and really listen to people who said, look, we want alternative sources of energy.

We want just to fix the infrastructure that we have now.

And we don't need a new big plant, particularly put into a working class neighborhood of people

of color in our city.

It's just, it's just unjust, inappropriate.

It's not good for the world, it's not good for the environment, it's certainly not good

for our city.

And how will this bill sort of impact the actions and the effects of all of these protest

movements?

I mean, you work with Louisiana Bucket Brigade and Bold Louisiana, and a number of other

groups have sort of been at the forefront of the protest movement against the Bayou

Bridge pipeline and other infrastructure.

So how will this bill impact this movement, and how can they be protected legally?

So I think it's clearly an attempt to intimidate people and to try to tamp down protests.

But I think it's backfiring, because people are not, not backing down.

And they see it as an indication of how much progress they've made at the petro lobby,

and the pipeline people will try to enhance the penalties.

There's a number of people that were arrested a few weeks ago outside of Napoleonville,

Louisiana.

There's other actions that are likely to take place across Louisiana over the coming weeks

and months as they continue to try to dig this pipeline.

So I don't think it will, actually.

It's not going to stop the people who are really dedicated to it.

I think the goal is to try to contain it and intimidate people.

I don't think either one of those things is going to happen, but that's clearly what the

intent is.

All right.

Well, please keep us posted.

Let us know how this bill is or isn't progressing and how it's impacting the movements.

And we look forward to talking to you again soon, Bill.

Thanks for taking us up and helping people understand it.

Appreciate it.

Thank you.

And thank you for joining us on the Real News Network.

iPad Rehab iCloud Solution Explained "English Subtitle" شرح طريقه جيسا لفك ايكلاود ايفون - Duration: 10:38.

Salam Alikom "Peace on you"

How are you guys today, I hope you all are fine

Today I am making this video

Because i received many questions & requests

About iCloud unlocking by hardware method for iPhone

Most of you saw the videos made by Jessa, iPad Rehab Channel

And they still don't understand the solution

This method exist long time ago

But i don't like to copy other people's ideas

And i don't like to do a video for something

someone already did a video for it before

That is why i didn't make a video for this solution

This solution is out more than one year already

But the people are so lazy to try it

Some people they don't know English but that is not an excuse

Ask your friends to translate & explain for you

It is really simple solution you just need practice

To be able to get it done

Jessa also published a new video few days ago

about new iCloud hardware unlocking method but i never heard about it before

I want to try it as well but right now i don't have a Microwave in my workshop

Soon i will buy a Microwave and i will test it and let you know the results

lets talk about the first method guys

You know when we do repair for Error 9 in iPhone we drill in the CPU

And we make two jumpers From CPU to Eeprom IC

It is exactly the same thing

The CPU from inside divided to sections

Each section is responsible for something

The iCloud Data is stored in a section which below the Apple Logo on CPU

All you have to do is to dril inside the Apple Logo, No need to drill the curvy edges

Only 4 or 6 pads are the one responsible for storing iCloud data

Some people who claim that this method don't work, They actually drill too deep

I will show you now that it is really working

First you must have a dremel tool with really fine tip same as that one

Lets turn it on

I am sorry for the noise

I can't believe you thought i am gonna do this

What is happening guys, is your brain on vacation ?

How could you believe that to unlock your phone you have to drill a hole in the CPU

Of course that is not true

The iCloud Data is not even stored in your device

The iCloud data is stored on Apple servers

Did you ever asked yourselves why you can't activate your iPhone without a simcard and internet

Because when you try to activate an iPhone the phone send activation request to the server

like that, Hi server i am the iphone 6 16GB black color serial bla bla imei bla bla please i want to activate

Apple server will check if the information is match with the database and if there is no sim lock or iCloud lock

it will let the phone activate

If the IMEI is iCloud on, the user will get the activation lock screen on his phone

Asking the user to enter the iCloud user & password

All the process is done on apple server

and what you see on your phone is a user interface to access the activation server

So defiantly the iCloud lock is not something stored on your iPhone

So how could you unlock it by drilling a hole in your device

The only real hardware method to unlock iCloud which is really difficult

Is by replacing the CPU + RAM + Baseband + Nand + Eeprom from anothe Board

Like if you have another board with no icloud on it but the board is faulty like long screw damage

But the CPU and RAM and everything else is working fine

You can unlock the iCloud by switching the set of ICs i mentioned before from the damaged board to the iCloud one

If you have the skills to do that method it will work 100% for real

but what make me wonder that is more than 100 person asked me to explain the iPad Rehab method for iCloud unlocking

Jessa Made that video last April as a joke as an April's fool

And she never imagine that there is someone working in this industry is fool enough to believe the joke

And this april also she made a new iCloud solution video as a joke and i still getting question from people

They call themselves techs asking if i tryed the new method

I wonder how people work in tech could be so ignorant like that

Use your brain guys

Don't believe everything on youtube without using your brain

When you get new information you have to validate it before you keep it in your mind

Don't store information before you try it yourself

Now photo and video editing can make you believe any fake information

it is very easy to drill this board and i put another in the phone and i tell you it is working

As you can see nowadays there is a lot of youtube channels shows fake repairs on their videos

I hope you don't get angry to me because of the title of the video

I had to do it like that to get people's attention so i can make them aware

Specially Arab people who don't know English

I know Some people will say that this video is a waste of time

But really guys you don't see how many person didn't understand jessa's joke and came asking me for explanation

And of course this is not jessa's fault that people can't understand her language or people are ignorant

I swear one guy didn't believe me when i told him she is joking :)

Even she write on her video "April's fool"

Before i made this video i asked a permition from jessa to do it so i can make Arab techs aware

Some people will wonder how we can drill the CPU work for error 9 solution

Yes that is possible

The first team discoverd that method as i know is G-LON team from China

They are very professional and highly skilled team

Maybe they was able to get the CPU & RAM layout

Or the engrave the first layer so carefully

That Area in RAM has GND & NC Pads so no harm if you drill it

Unlike the center area of the RAM which i am sure have lot of connected pads

So it is totally different scenarios

And as i said before iCloud is not something stored on the phone it is on Apple server

I would like to thank deeply Mrs. Jessa from iPad Rehab for her cooperation, she directly agreed when i asked her permetion to do this video

Thank you all for watching, use your brains, and see you soon

The Self: Who We Are - Duration: 3:28.

I THINK ARISTOTLE HAD A GOOD IDEA ABOUT THE SELF WHEN

HE TALKED ABOUT THE VEGETATIVE OR NUTRITIVE SOUL ON THE ONE

HAND.

WHICH IS JUST REALLY A PRINCIPLE OF ORGANIZATIONS,

A PRINCIPLE OF SELF-PRESERVATION.

SO THAT EVEN PLANTS HAVE A VEGETATIVE SOUL.

AND IT'S NOT A THING.

IT'S A WAY OF BEING ORGANIZED.

AND AT ITS SIMPLEST LEVEL, THAT'S WHAT A SELF IS.

AND EVERY LIVING THING HAS A SELF IN THAT SENSE.

BECAUSE IT PROTECTS ITSELF AND NOT THE REST OF THE WORLD.

IT DRAWS A LINE AROUND ITSELF IN EFFECT AND SAYS, THIS IS ME.

AND THAT'S THE REST OF THE WORLD.

SO THAT THAT'S THE SENSE OF SELF THAT IMMUNOLOGISTS

SPEAK ABOUT WHEN THEY TALK ABOUT SELF-RECOGNITION.

IT'S YOU CAN'T PROTECT THE WHOLE WORLD.

YOU PROTECT THIS.

AND EVERYTHING ELSE IS OUTSIDE YOU.

AND SO DOES A LOBSTER HAVE A SELF?

SURE.

BECAUSE WHEN IT'S HUNGRY, IT DOESN'T EAT ITS OWN CLAW.

IT COULD.

BUT IT DOESN'T.

IT DISTINGUISHES ITSELF FROM THE REST OF THE WORLD.

FOR A HUMAN BEING, A SELF IS A MUCH FANCIER THING.

A HUMAN SELF, AGAIN, IT'S A WAY OF BEING ORGANIZED.

IT'S NOT A THING.

IT'S NOT AN ORGAN.

IT'S NOT A PEARL.

AND SO IT FOLLOWS THAT IT ISN'T ANYTHING PERMANENT

IN THE SENSE OF LIKE AN IMMORTAL SOUL

OR LIKE A SPECIAL MARKER OF SOME KIND WHICH IS IMMUTABLE.

IT'S MORE LIKE THE WHIRLPOOL THAT STAYS THERE

BEHIND THE ROCK IN THE STREAM.

NO MATTER HOW MUCH WATER RUNS BY,

THERE'S STILL THAT LITTLE WHIRLPOOL THERE.

AND IT HAS A CERTAIN IDENTITY EVEN THOUGH THE WATER'S

CHANGING ALL THE TIME.

THE ATOMS IN YOUR BODY ARE BEING SHED.

AND NEW ATOMS ARE TAKING THEIR PLACE.

NEW CELLS ARE BEING MADE ALL THE TIME.

AND OVER THIS LONG PERIOD OF TIME, THERE IS A CERTAIN UNITY.

THAT'S WHAT A SELF IS.

MORE PARTICULARLY, IT'S A PSYCHOLOGICAL SELF.

WHICH I'VE CALLED IT THE CENTER OF NARRATIVE GRAVITY.

AND A CENTER OF GRAVITY IN PHYSICS, IT'S NOT AN ATOM.

YOU CAN'T SAY, WELL, IS IT MADE OF IRON?

IS IT MADE OF CARBON?

IS IT AN ELECTRON?

NO.

A CENTER OF GRAVITY, IT'S AN ABSTRACTION.

BUT IT'S PHYSICALLY, NON-ARBITRARILY LOCATED.

IT HAS A PARTICULAR LOCATION.

FOR ANY PARTICULAR OBJECT, YOU CAN

CALCULATE WHAT THE CENTER OF GRAVITY IS.

AND IT'S A VERY USEFUL WAY OF SIMPLIFYING WHAT IS OTHERWISE

A VERY COMPLEX PHENOMENON.

NOW, A SELF IS AN ABSTRACTION LIKE A CENTER OF GRAVITY.

BUT IT'S NOT AN ABSTRACTION OF PHYSICS.

IT'S AN ABSTRACTION OF FOLK PSYCHOLOGY.

IT'S AN ABSTRACTION OF ACTING, THINKING, TALKING, BELIEVING,

WORRYING, WONDERING, BEING IN PAIN.

IT'S THE AUTHOR OF RECORD.

IT'S THE VICTIM OF RECORD.

IT'S THE OFFICIAL ENTITY THAT SPEAKS

THE SPEECH ACTS AND SUFFERS THE PAINS.

AND THE NORMAL RULE IS ONE SELF TO A CUSTOMER.

THAT IS ONE SELF PER BODY.

Grand Jury Witness Brings Mueller TO HIS KNEES With This Shocking Look Inside His Russia Probe - Duration: 5:33.

Grand Jury Witness Brings Mueller TO HIS KNEES With This Shocking Look Inside His Russia

Probe

One witness on Mueller's grand jury has had ENOUGH and is speaking out against this

drawn-out witch hunt.

Ronn Torossian wrote this powerful op-ed for The Daily Caller, where he reveals the disturbing

details inside Mueller's corrupt investigation.

From The Daily Caller

On December 15, 2017, I spent the day testifying in Washington, D.C., in front of the Mueller

Commission grand jury at the United States District Court.

As Business Insider first reported in 2012, I was approached by Paul Manafort and Rick

Gates to do public relations work for the Ukrainian government, and not to report said

work to the Department of Justice as required by FARA laws.

(I am the president of a large public relations firm in New York City.)

Manafort and Gates also implied they'd pay me off-shore.

Kyle R. Freeny, a special investigator in Mr. Mueller's office, strongly urged me

to do my patriotic duty, drop all my professional and personal responsibilities and appear immediately

in front of the grand jury (about a short meeting held over five years ago which I vaguely

remembered).

I reluctantly woke up for a 6 a.m. shuttle flight and spent the day in court.

Prior to that testimony, I shared the limited details during interviews with government

investigators.

I verified that I spoke with Manafort and Gates a few times in February and March 2012.

I shared the handful of emails of which I was in possession and testified under oath

that the emails were accurate.

After hours of repeating the same thing again and again, questions then veered into Russian

names I'd never before heard (including Konstantin Kilimnik), and questions about

previous work I have done for Russian oligarchs, confirming that I know Roger Stone, worked

for Eric Trump's Foundation in 2017 and more.

(Yes, my New-York- City-born kids understand Russian as my ex-wife is Russian, and yes,

they attend the same New York City school that Ivanka's and Jared's kids did.)

After being thanked profusely by Ms. Freeny and a series of stern-looking attorneys, alone,

I exited the courtroom, ignored questions from the media outside the courthouse and

took the ACELA back to my Park Avenue office.

Not surprisingly, Manafort and Gates have been indicted, yet nothing has connected this

matter to President Donald Trump.

This investigation feels like a witch hunt, even more so after reading yesterday's CNN

report that

"Special counsel Robert Mueller's investigators have questioned Russian oligarchs travelling

in the U.S. about whether they donated to Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign.

One oligarch was questioned and his electronic devices searched when his private jet landed

in the U.S., and a second Russian oligarch was also questioned during a recent trip to

the U.S.

An informal interview request has been made to a third oligarch who has not recently been

to the U.S."

 If, in fact, foreign money came into the United

States and impacted elections, then it must be uncovered.

Yet is it the American way now to question the most powerful people of a foreign foe

as those people enter this country?

What would our government say if billionaire GOP donor Sheldon Adelson was questioned when

visiting Russia?

How would we feel, say, if George Soros's private plane was searched upon arrival in

Moscow and he was questioned?

Our government would rightfully be in an uproar — and Russian President Vladimir Putin is

right to raise hell if these reports are accurate.

(And he will surely order American billionaires to be questioned in Russia.)

It is a dangerous, slippery slope, and one which has nothing to do with the mission of

the special counsel investigation, which is supposedly to explore links or coordination

between Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign and the Russian government.

By now, the cost of this government investigation is tens of millions of dollars (including

an $86.52 reimbursement check I cashed for travel).

Finally, this week there was the first sentencing of someone indicted by Mueller.

Stop the presses: A 34-year-old attorney of Skadden Arps was sentenced to 30 days in prison

and fined $20,000 for lying to the FBI about not reporting work he did for a Ukrainian

oligarch (who he's related to).

He should be charged and punished.

Yet, is this the most important task for the Department of Justice?

Yesterday, media reported that my client Felix Sater was questioned about "Russian election

meddling."

Sater — a real estate entrepreneur and former partner of Donald Trump — sent an email

in 2016 to his childhood friend, Michael Cohen, who is Trump's lawyer about his desire to

build a Trump Tower in Moscow.

The deal went nowhere, and Sater, now having spent who knows how much in legal fees, is

being dragged repeatedly to Washington, D.C., to speak about his desire to build a building.

What in the world does this have to do with Russians meddling in the election?

Sater — who alleges that he is a former high-level U.S. government intelligence asset

who provided vital security to the government for years — came to the United States at

the age of eight, is an American citizen.

He is American-educated.

And while he is, in fact, well connected, he's about as connected to meddling in the

election as I am to life on Mars.

In February, the House Intelligence Committee memo revealed that a dossier funded by the

Democratic National Committee and the Clinton campaign led to the creation of the Mueller

commission.

It's time for this witch hunt to end.

There are plenty of things not to like about President Trump, but if the American people

seek to remove him from office the place to remove him is at the ballot box.

Enough is enough.

Senator Tim Scott Makes Shocking Admission About Trump, Liberals Are Stunned - Duration: 5:25.

South Carolina Republican Senator Tim Scott just made a shocking admission about a private

moment that he had with President Donald Trump in the Oval Office.

Liberals are stunned b what he had to say, which was captured on video.

Even before President Donald Trump took office, liberals have gone out of their way to paint

him as a racist and a bigot.

Everyone from Democrats to the mainstream media has continually tried to portray our

President as a closed-minded buffoon and as someone who isn't sensitive to the rocky

history of race relations in our country.

However, after they see a CNN interview with Senator Scott (R-SC), they won't have a

leg to stand on.

According to Daily Caller, during the interview with CNN host Alisyn Camerota, Scott shared

the set with Congressman Trey Gowdy (R-SC) and relayed a very specific encounter that

he had with President Donald Trump.

Liberals weren't ready to hear about this.

"I tell you the truth, I go back to a specific incident in the Charlottesville situation,

where I had some very harsh comments about the president.

And, I was very candid about my displeasure and how I found some of his comments to be

indefensible.

He invited me into the Oval Office after my criticism, and I found something quite surprising

happening in the Oval Office," Sen. Scott recounted.

"He said, 'We're not on the same page on the history of race relations in this country.

Help me find the way forward.'

So, I started talking about legislative remedies that would help poor kids from poor communities,

like the ones I grew up in," Scott continued.

According to Newsmax, Scott credits that conversation with Trump as what eventually led to the bipartisan

passage of new legislation.

"And, he said that he was interested in the legislation.

Long story short, he supported the legislation, and now, Cory Booker and myself, Chris Coons,

and other Democrats, along with Republicans on the finance committee got that bill passed

into law, and every state is now looking at ways to create opportunities," Scott explained.

"Yes, the rhetoric cannot be helpful, it can be indefensible at times, but the challenge

I laid on the president's desk was to help me find a path forward, and legislatively

you

had to concede that that legislation, as well as now record low unemployment in communities

of color, are helpful targets from a public policy standpoint," Scott continued.

"But, we still have to wrestle with the rhetoric that can sometimes be hurtful."

Obviously caught off guard by Scott's candid and unexpected story about Trump, Camerota

simply said, "I think that's a really valuable story."

It's never easy for liberals to give Trump credit for being open-minded or even to admit

that he isn't filled with contempt for people of color.

Liberals will eventually have to come to terms with the fact that Donald Trump is probably

one of the greatest presidents our country has ever had.

In all honesty, former President Barack Obama didn't exactly set the bar for performance

very high after eight years of increasing debt and destructive policies across the board.

Despite his predecessor having been an absolute failure, Trump is proving himself to be a

true leader for all Americans regardless of their ethnicity.

Trump's accomplishments in the jobs sector alone prove that he is a far better President

than Obama ever was for minorities.

Still, these are things that liberals have trouble seeing because they aren't interested

in Americans having a higher quality of life.

The unfortunate truth is that the left really only thrives when people fail and when they

become dependent on the government for sustenance.

After decades of that kind of thinking, there are entire cities that have become criminal

hotbeds where the majority of minorities live in sub-poverty conditions.

I think Chicago is a great example to look at when criticizing liberals for the negative

effects of their ideology.

I applaud Senator Scott for taking the time to compliment our President for his quality

of character and open-mindedness when it comes to bringing different views to the table.

How Regulations Dictate the Look of New Cars - Duration: 4:54.

Car design is far from a purely aesthetic pursuit.

In addition to accommodating all manner of engineering needs, designers must work within

tight regulatory constraints.

In our hyperregulated modern world, the government dictates nearly every aspect of car design,

from the size and color of the exterior lighting elements to how sharp the creases stamped

into sheetmetal can be.

If a designer is lucky, those rules are the same in the United States and Europe.

Often, though, they're not, leading to designs that adhere to the stricter stipulations of

the two rulebooks.

Because, as Joe Grace, head of concepts and innovation at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, notes,

if a vehicle isn't designed from the outset with both markets in mind, "even changing

the plastic pieces can be expensive."

We also spoke with Robert Lesnik, director of exterior design for Mercedes-Benz, and

Christopher Chapman, senior chief designer for Hyundai Design North America, about the

surprising specificity of rules dictating the look of your new car.1.

Sheetmetal Edges

Most pedestrians have no clue how much they've affected car design.

European regulations attempting to cushion a person's impact with a moving car have

led to taller hoods, which provide for more space between the head of a struck pedestrian

and any hard engine component.

Hyundai's Chapman says that means the design of a car is "set up" at the base of its

A-pillar, with shoulderlines rising and greenhouses slimming from there.

There are even regulations regarding the creases in sheetmetal.

As Mercedes-Benz's Lesnik explains: "Everything that could hit a theoretical body or head

has to be soft."

Any sharp exterior line is an illusion made possible by talented designers and precision

manufacturing processes.

EU law dictates a minimum 0.2-inch radius for all edges on the front and rear fascias,

with a sharper 0.1-inch radius allowed for all other exposed body panels.

Even grilles and badges—basically everything above the doorsills—must have blunted edges.

But brush bars, protruding tow hooks, and front fenders that expose parts of the front

tires, like those on the new Jeep Wrangler, are welcome in America.

(In Europe, a different front bumper fills that gap on the Wrangler.)

2.

Rear Bodywork

Designers also like to pull in the bodywork aft of the rear wheel-well cutouts to show

off a little tire tread—the sports-car equivalent of a plunging neckline.

But European regulations dictate that fenders must cover the entire tread width as measured

from 30 degrees forward of the tire's top center to 50 degrees rearward.

Black plastic fins like those you'll find on the Jaguar F-type allow stylists to create

that provocative view while still adhering to the letter of the law.

3.

Taillights

The McLaren P1's arcing taillights can't get much thinner.

U.S. law requires a minimum of 7.8 square inches of illuminated surface area per brake

light, 1.9 square inches of which must be visible 45 degrees off the car's center

and 15 degrees below the taillight's horizontal centerline.

4.

Turn Signals

U.S. regs allow automakers to use the same element as both taillight and turn signal.

In Europe, the turn signals have to be separate and amber in color.

Some designers suspect the U.S. will soon follow suit, a development that FCA's Grace

tells us he'd champion.

And he's already preparing for the change, as the 2019 Ram 1500 sports amber turn signals.

Audi's sequential signals illuminate too small an area when they first fire up, so

in the U.S., they're combined with a standard turn signal.

Each turn-signal lamp (or bank of LEDs) must cover at least 3.4 square inches.

5.

Marker Lights

The U.S. requires all vehicles to have marker lights—amber lights mounted to the front

fenders or integrated into the sides of headlight housings and red lights on the rear fenders.

Europe doesn't mandate markers for any car less than 19.7 feet long but does require

redundant turn signals be installed along the sides of

the vehicle.
