We're here in Leipzig in the house of Mendelssohn - great place
and we're standing here in his study
almost a sacred spot.
This is the place where he wrote a lot of his masterpieces at this desk
including many of the pieces I recorded.
Here we see the piano at which he maybe tried things
or where he might have maintained his technique.
Here we have two busts of people Mendelssohn admired..
Johann Sebastian Bach who worked here in Leipzig as well
and Johann von Goethe, the great poet, writer of the famous Faust among others..
whom Mendelssohn visited in his youth several times.
This has all been reconstructed here after an aquarel painting by Felix Moscheles

In short, a very special place that's really great to see up close.
In the meantime we've arrived home in my own little study
As we've seen Mendelssohn had a Bach bust in his study
showing his admiration for Bach,
but Bach was not the only 'old' composer that Mendelssohn was often occupied with
and whose work he thoroughly studied.
That was for example true for Handel and Mozart as well.
He even occasionally would get blamed by his contemporaries,
colleagues for being too much into those old guys
so I think Mendelssohn would've been pleased to know
that still very many people are into those old composers,
even better, Mendelssohn has become himself
one of those people that we're still keeping ourselves occupied with
many many years after his death.
So I like to close off this series of movies in style
for which I will use a nice souvenir from the Mendelssohn-Haus in Leipzig
Here we see the noble features of the eminent man
and on the backside we see a wonderful beer-opener.
