Understanding Financial Statements Part 4 | Statement of Cash Flows - Indirect Method Explained - Duration: 5:48.

hey it's Patti Scharf CPA and co-founder of catching clouds the leader in

e-commerce accounting and today we're going to go through part four of our

series on understanding financial statements today we're going to talk

about the statement of cash flows using the indirect method the indirect method

is a lot more common than the direct method QuickBooks Online uses the

indirect method Xero uses the direct method but the reason why the indirect

method is much more popular is because the direct method means you have to

attach a second supplementary statement to kind of reconcile between your other

financial statements whereas the indirect method includes it as part of

the process so I'm going to talk about the indirect method today and let's just

go through an example because I think it helps seeing it kind of on paper so so

using the indirect method you start with your net income from your income

statement that net income amount includes activities it includes income

and expenses that may or may not have touched cash or it may or may not have

included everything that needs to be included so the indirect method has some

adjustments to get you to your actual cash flow the the income statement

doesn't do that naturally it you really need to do the statement of cash flows

so that you can make sure that you understand everything that's going in

and out and touching your checking account okay so you start with your net

income number in this case $115,000 and we're gonna make adjustments for any

operating activities so operating activities are things that are normal

part of operations business as usual it's you're collecting money from your

customers you're spending money paying your suppliers you're doing your

depreciating your assets in the normal course of business okay

depreciation and amortization by definition are and are non-cash

activities it doesn't have anything to do with cash it's just an accounting

function so that will always get adjusted out I think one of the most

common examples of an adjustment in operating expenses

is accounts receivable so like if your accounts receivable goes down it means

that your customers paid you and it doesn't matter whether the sales were

recorded this year last year or whenever they paid you so if they paid you your

cash should go up because it's not related to the sales necessarily that's

in your profit and loss statement okay same thing when your accounts payable

goes down it's because you paid bills so from one period to the next

if you're looking at your balance sheet from last year compared to this year if

you see that your accounts payable goes down extra cash went out the door if you

see your accounts receivable went down more cash came in the door so if you

take a look at this example there is net cash provided by these operating

activities of twenty thousand dollars so this is going to be adjustment to the

original amount that we've got okay the next section is for investing activities

investing activities most commonly these are things like buying computers or

assets to use in your business some kind of equipment investment or something

like that or if you sell those assets that and you get money for selling those

assets that would be an adjustment to your cash so in this case we've

purchased an extra five thousand dollars of fixed assets so cash went down that

that cash outlay went to purchase those assets it was a balance sheet activity

it wasn't an income statement activity okay so same thing with the financing

activities financing activities relate to things like loans loans from

shareholders loans from the bank loans to other entities or something like that

so in this case we have notes we we had a loan that we paid down by $50,000 so

because that loan went down that cash went out that that payment of the loan

because the loan is on your balance she is not going to be included in your

net income number of 115,000 so we have to account for that cash elsewhere

same thing with dividends dividends it's an item on your balance sheet it's not

going to be in your income and expense profit and loss statement so that

$100,000 of cash needs to be accounted for here so at the end of the day you've

got your net income that came from your profit and loss statement and then you

have these adjustments accounting for activities that don't relate

specifically to the items that are on your profit and loss statement and at

the end of the day you've got $20,000 Crees $20,000 decrease in cash if you

take that away from the amount of cash you had at the beginning of the period

you should have $100,000 at the end and when you look at your balance sheet it

does so that's how you know that you did it right so hopefully this was helpful

Taiwanese Identity: Who We Are is Beyond Politics - Duration: 5:41.

hey guys it's Iris

so a while ago I was on reddit

and I saw this news titling

in Australia, staying loyal to Taiwan can mean losing a job

and it was about a waitress who actually shares the first name with me

Ya-Ting

she was working at a barbecue restaurant in Sydney when a customer asked her

are you Chinese? she said no I'm Taiwanese

and she was never given another shift after that

same thing happened to another waitress who was working at a Chinese restaurant

her manager asked her is Taiwan part of China

she said no definitely not

a Canadian friend actually saw this news and he asked me

he was so confused

what was the big deal? and honestly I had no idea where to begin to explain

how complicated the situations are from the very beginning of the history

at the same time

I felt very happy that these Taiwanese people are standing up for themselves in a foreign country

after reading this book called the Taiwanese Psyche

written by a psychologist who has his own clinic in the United States

I really understood the Taiwanese psyche and it just gave me a sense of realization

how powerless we Taiwanese feel sometimes

on the February 28th 1947 which we refer to as 228 in Taiwan

the intellectuals and students who were suppressed violently even killed on that day by the KMT Republic of China government

the idea of participating in any sort of political activities is dangerous really stuck

I remember vividly that my mom told me

when she was in school the students would be fined if they spoke Taiwanese in school

because the government at the time wanted to press on the education of Chinese language

I think that also stuck to us until the present day because

a lot of times I get this image that it is embarrassing or even shameful to speak Taiwanese among the younger generations

and what the media in Taiwan referring China as mainland China or simply mainland

how would the people in Taiwan not be affected by these thoughts and perspectives

this just adds even more to our powerlessness

as time goes this weakness of attitude will actually become a weakness of character

of course I'm not saying that being Taiwanese

our self-identity is all about politics our self-identity is beyond politics

we as Taiwanese have our own distinctive culture

whether it's the aboriginals or the immigrants from Southeast Asia

we are kind and accepting

we have our own values and that it's something to stand for

and you're probably thinking so what are you doing as a Taiwanese living in Canada

what are you doing for Taiwan's independence it's a good argument

but I can also tell you that because we are so mingled with different people from different countries

that we are also potential subjects to expressing our political stance

one time I was in my Chinese friend's car

I don't know what exactly led us to this subject of Taiwan's independence

and I told him I truly believe Taiwan is not part of China

immediately he got very angry and told me that if I spoke any more of it he would drop me off on the highway

my reaction was yeah drop me off here drop me off and I will walk home

please open the door

if there's one thing that I learned from all these experiences is that

if you don't stand for something you will fall for everything

and I stand for the Taiwanese values

So for doing this I'm going to use razor tool right here

Cut it

Going to effects and search for Gaussian blur

There we go

Place it on your adjustment layer

like this

Go to control panel

Set a keyframe

next to bluriness set a keyframe right here and change blurriness to 100

So now you see a

Black black line or black corner like things. Did you guys see that?

You can easily remove it by clicking this repeat edge pixels

So now it's gone right now, so now at the beginning set keyframes 0

At the end set keyframes 0 again

so now we get a cool little blur transition effect

Do you guys like it

Now we add some glow to it

For doing that

under opacity change blend mode to color dodge

Okay now

At the beginning set opacity

0

At center set opacity

hundred

At the end set opacity zero again

Good morning, we slept another 3 h, that should be enough.

The property owner just passed and asked us if we need help

in Italian and then he figured out that we were not Italian

and he made clear that it's okay for him that we stay here.

I introduced ourselves and everything's alright.

We were feeling a bit worried

because there are so many gates and barriers etc. that we thought that we're not so welcome here.

But he was really friendly. And the dogs got used to us too.

I'm editing the video where we leave Morocco

and it feels like months have passed

because so much happened.

And we really rushed through Portugal, Spain and Andorra.

But only 10 days or so have passed.

Two weeks.

Out of all the ACSI campsites on this island there are only four open! Five.

We still have to order new wiper arms

and we have to send them to an address.

And we called two and now looked for other ones

and almost every camp site is closed till May.

We've got a book of ASCI camp sites, which is convenient because you know if they have a washing machine etc.

They are all closed!

There are so many camp sites here.

And only five are open.

The sun has come out as the wind blew all the clouds aside.

And as it's not so nice here

and Karin is still not so well

because of her grandfather

we'll move to the next beach without filming.

It just started raining.

in March in Sardinia.

And I'm missing my rain jacket.

The walk is really nice and the sun is setting and it's beautiful

I think it's a bit less than an hour till we're at the parking.

There's another giant puddle that we can't pass.

It got quite dark

and we followed a small path to get around the puddle

it's an official path but it was way longer than we thought.

And we're happy to get back to the larger path where we don't need a torch so much.

- it's too dark to see it on camera -

but it's like 20 m long

and there's no grass or so so we could get around it.

So we're putting off our shoes and walk through it barefoot.

The trail is really in need of maintenance. (I would say it's an adventure.)

That's really adventurous.

It's only 7 pm although it looks like the middle of the night.

We're always picking the worst times to go hiking.

And we didn't think that it would be so far.

There was this giant puddle where we took the small path

and this took us so long.

And it got dark. But there's no question we'll make it to the car.

40 minutes left. Whouah that was deep.

We reached the paved road!

Only 1 km left then we're home!

And it's not even 8 pm.

We're back, we made it!

We're really relieved to be back

and we'll have salad and popcorn for dinner.

For everyone out there in the internet: don't go hiking if you don't know how far it is and it's getting dark! That's stupid.

And the mountain looks like on the Lofoten islands.

Beautiful but windy.

But we got used to it

and we always put on our jackets when leaving the car.

Although it's so sunny.

When looking left and right

you can see that there's lots of vegetation but there are no tall trees, only bushes.

So for example we see on the map that there's a wood but if we opened the roof tent there it would be higher than the trees.

So it's a bit difficult to find a place that is sheltered from the wind.

Trump Tweeted Fake Photos To Convince His Base That The Border Wall Was Being Built - Duration: 3:28.

On Wednesday afternoon, Donald Trump was absolutely delighted about the fact that construction

along a southern portion of the border wall was coming along so nicely.

He tweeted out the following.

He said: "Great briefing this afternoon on the start of our southern border WALL ... WALL

was in all caps for some reason.

But then attached to the tweet was several pictures of construction of what looked to

be the wall.

It looked like, "Hey, the wall's going up.

Donald Trump is keeping his horrible promise there."

But as it turns out, those photos were actually from 2009.

Those pictures were almost nine years old.

And they actually were just showing a piece of border fencing that was being repaired

at the time.

So, either Donald Trump doesn't know that his own wall is not being built or he figured

he'd go ahead and try to dupe his idiotic base by tweeting out these pictures assuming

that nobody would try to fact-check the guy that lies all the time.

Donald Trump, and this is the thing about stupid people, stupid people think that everybody

else is as stupid as they are.

That's something everybody needs to remember.

That helps to explain a lot of what Donald Trump and Sarah Huckabee Sanders and Kellyanne

Conway, it explains a lot of what this administration does.

Stupid people think everyone else is just as stupid as they are, so they think they

can get away with these kinds of stupid lies that they tell on a near daily basis.

I don't think Donald Trump accidentally attached those pictures to his tweet.

I don't think that Donald Trump doesn't know that his wall is not currently under construction.

No part of Donald Trump's wall is being built right now.

Not one single inch of it.

And yet he tweets this out probably to get his base happy because they're pretty pissed

off right now and Ann Coulter is leading the charge on that because he's not building the

border wall.

So he assumed he could just pull one over on everybody and say: "Look, here's some shiny

pictures of a wall, please love me again because you're all I have in the world."

Not gonna work.

I'm sure there's some conservatives that believe the pictures and, you know, they probably

hear the fact-checking and say it's just fake news.

But it's not.

It's reality.

Not one square inch of Donald Trump's border wall is currently under construction.

They're still going through prototypes.

I don't even know if they've made that see-though wall that he wants so badly.

But he thinks that he can continue to lie to the American public and that we're all

just as stupid as him and that we'll just believe whatever he says.

That's not how America works.

Yeah, there's lots of stupid people here, just like there's lots of stupid people in

every country.

But there's not enough stupid people in here to approve of what Donald Trump is doing or

to buy into his lies.

hey guys it's Iris

so a while ago I was on reddit

and I saw this news titling

in Australia, staying loyal to Taiwan can mean losing a job

and it was about a waitress who actually shares the first name with me

Ya-Ting

she was working at a barbecue restaurant in Sydney when a customer asked her

are you Chinese? she said no I'm Taiwanese

and she was never given another shift after that

same thing happened to another waitress who was working at a Chinese restaurant

her manager asked her is Taiwan part of China

she said no definitely not

a Canadian friend actually saw this news and he asked me

he was so confused

what was the big deal? and honestly I had no idea where to begin to explain

how complicated the situations are from the very beginning of the history

at the same time

I felt very happy that these Taiwanese people are standing up for themselves in a foreign country

after reading this book called the Taiwanese Psyche

written by a psychologist who has his own clinic in the United States

I really understood the Taiwanese psyche and it just gave me a sense of realization

how powerless we Taiwanese feel sometimes

on the February 28th 1947 which we refer to as 228 in Taiwan

the intellectuals and students who were suppressed violently even killed on that day by the KMT Republic of China government

the idea of participating in any sort of political activities is dangerous really stuck

I remember vividly that my mom told me

when she was in school the students would be fined if they spoke Taiwanese in school

because the government at the time wanted to press on the education of Chinese language

I think that also stuck to us until the present day because

a lot of times I get this image that it is embarrassing or even shameful to speak Taiwanese among the younger generations

and what the media in Taiwan referring China as mainland China or simply mainland

how would the people in Taiwan not be affected by these thoughts and perspectives

this just adds even more to our powerlessness

as time goes this weakness of attitude will actually become a weakness of character

of course I'm not saying that being Taiwanese

our self-identity is all about politics our self-identity is beyond politics

we as Taiwanese have our own distinctive culture

whether it's the aboriginals or the immigrants from Southeast Asia

we are kind and accepting

we have our own values and that it's something to stand for

and you're probably thinking so what are you doing as a Taiwanese living in Canada

what are you doing for Taiwan's independence it's a good argument

but I can also tell you that because we are so mingled with different people from different countries

that we are also potential subjects to expressing our political stance

one time I was in my Chinese friend's car

I don't know what exactly led us to this subject of Taiwan's independence

and I told him I truly believe Taiwan is not part of China

immediately he got very angry and told me that if I spoke any more of it he would drop me off on the highway

my reaction was yeah drop me off here drop me off and I will walk home

please open the door

if there's one thing that I learned from all these experiences is that

if you don't stand for something you will fall for everything

and I stand for the Taiwanese values
