Time of sowing influence on phosphorus requirements and soil testing - Duration: 1:25.
This is a SAGIT project looking at the effect of time of sowing on
phosphorus requirements
The theory is that the earlier you sow in your sowing window
the less phosphorus you need to apply and that's due to whole heap of
circumstances. In South Australia we've got a unique soil set in the
calcium carbonate soils which do behave very differently in terms of
phosphorus availability. I'm standing in front of one of the three trials we've
got this year and we're looking at a response to phosphorus of wheat, two
varieties, Trojan and Mace, and looking at the response whether it's sown late April
so traditional Anzac Day sowing, mid May which is sort of middle towards the
end of the sowing window and an extreme of early June. This is year one so
we did a glasshouse trial that style this project as a controlled
environment study but we this is year one of a two year field program so the
idea is to to hopefully get a variability in climatic conditions and
starting conditions between the two years and seeing what, basically decipher
what effect that has on on the effects of phosphorus nutrition.

Games: True Confessions - Duration: 1:39.

Hello,
and welcome to the Rue des Rosiers Adidas flagship store
as we celebrate the launch of the ARKYN shoe.
It's a 100% feminine sport shoe, which gives us a chance to celebrate women's creativity,
and particularly femininity and multi-faceted creativity.
So, can we be good at more than one thing ?
I'm pleased to introduce Joséphine de la Baume, musician and actress,
and Camélia Jordana, singer and actress.
I have a question for you.
Do you remember your first creative act when you were little,
your first little play, your first movie, your first pasta necklace,
something that made you think "I'm making something that might be my future" ?
I remember I attended a sort of music school when I was little.
One day we did pottery.
I really loved it.
I remember I made this awful vase.
I gave it to my dad for Father's Day.
He still has it on his desk today.
I remember being so little.
I took this thing home, I painted it a bit and I was so proud.
I thought: "It's pretty good, you really can put a flower in it".
I thought it was wonderful.
I had a feeling of achievement as a result of true creative effort.
Did you think you might become a potter ?
I was really excited about it because I was just a kid,
but I was aware of doing something more than just being three and playing.
There was a little something more when the wheel was turning
and you had to be super adept and agile, I think.
I was delighted.
What I loved most was that it was manual
and you could make something real using the wheel.
I found it very exciting.
I loved going to my pottery courses and once I was there,
it was almost meditative I think.
It helped me focus, and it was really nice.
What about you ?
I wrote a whole musical.
It was the first and only time that I combined music and writing.
I forced my little brother and all our friends to be in it.
We were all out in the country.
I was a pretty bossy little thing !
We filmed it on VHS tape,
so it was a kind of short musical and I orchestrated the whole thing.
It was pretty great because my brother ended up making music with me.
By forcing him to participate, I ended up convincing him to join a group.
So maybe it was the start of something.
But I was quite proud to have managed to create and convince so many people
to work on this musical and visual experience with me.
I made macaroni necklaces and thought I had a great future in fashion but well
When did you realize that you could make only one choice ?
Because there always comes a time when people ask you :
" What do you want to be when you grow up ? "
But actually, I don't think creativity works like that.
You don't realize you're good at just one thing.
Do you remember a time when you were told "You have to choose just one thing" ?
I've always thought it's a bit ridiculous to have to choose.
Instead, I think it's great to be interested in several things.
You may not be good at lots of things, but that doesn't mean you can't try.
I think that if you keep trying, you can do something interesting.
Anyway, it's the thought that counts.
Then again, it's true that whenever I was on a promotional tour for an album or a film,
people would always ask me "Which do you prefer ?"
And actually, they were two completely separate disciplines, although you need to be honest in both.
And if you realize that what you're going to give doesn't touch people,
as an actress or a musician,
you need to dig deep within yourself in both disciplines.
But they're not the same; they're different interests.
Fortunately, there's no reason to limit yourself to one profession if you're interested in three things.
So, when we were promoting something,
it was as if I hadn't necessarily made a choice but I was supposed to.
It's as if there's automatically something you prefer. But that's not necessarily so.
There are people who love listening to music and watching movies.
They can watch a movie, then listen to music and, well my days are sort of like that.
When did you realize that being a woman might limit you ?
When did you hear a comment or a cliché that made you think: "You can't be serious!"?
I was lucky to start working quite young when I was 16 or 17.
I've been even luckier to come across very, very kind people
who always seem to be very scholarly, highly politicized,
very cultivated
and very curious about others and about the world and different cultures and food,
languages, customs and traditions.
So I was lucky to be immersed in these sorts of environments quite young.
And yet, despite their openness,
these men could confidently assert that hysteria was purely for women,
because as we all know, hysteria comes from the uterus.
So, I was a bit suspicious and surprised because,
what's funny is that the people who say these things can be ones who claim to feminists.
As if all girls spent their days flailing around on the ground.
Yeah.
And what's even funnier is that there are even women who say they're not feminist,
which is funny because it's a bit as if an Arab called another Arab a "filthy Arab".
So it's something I don't really understand.
But I think being a woman is hilarious.
Because our society is advancing and evolving but,
at the same time, there are also large regressions in other areas and I love playing on that,
even though there are some pretty awful things happening that we hear about, witness or are subject to.
I'm lucky to be a pretty strong person, which means that I generally get what I want in life.
So, I love to play with these rules.
I think it's wonderful to find myself face to face
with someone who thinks the fact that I'm a woman places me somewhere else.
The fact of switching from one to the other is great.
Going back to your creative process, what happens when you have two creative zones ?
Do they both have the same source of inspiration ?
Are they two facets of your personality that are completely separate ?
For you, is inspiration something completely cross cutting? How do you create ?
I think there are two points in common for me between acting, like when you're someone else, and music.
The thing I love the most in life is telling stories.
Then, the other thing that's necessary for me is other people.
I need to feed and to be fed to be able to tell stories.
So, I have different sources of inspiration.
To be able to be someone, I observe people and myself a lot.
I've always loved putting on shows and being different people.
I think it's a lot more relaxing and more fun.
Then, when it comes to songs, at least for the ones I write,
I love to use "I" to talk about other people and I love to use other people to talk about myself.
So, my next album, for example, is a project where I feel like I'm talking about myself all the time,
when the subjects are actually about femininity.
There's a tribute to women,
there's a super satirical song about the diktats we're under
and how we deal with them and how we have fun with them as well.
There's a song about refugees, there's a song that talks to a political leader.
So, it's a super engaged album in English, French and Arabic.
There's another song about plurality that,
at the same time, lets me be a bit everywhere I want to be.
And at the same time, when I'm making the videos, I feel like this is where I can express myself,
where I can use absolutely everything that I am.
I feel like this is the place most useful to me, everything I am all year.
Like you said, I think the idea is to live and be aware and live life.
I think that writing, at least as I see it, is a kind of exercise.
I have no patience for waiting.
I need inspiration, a bit like a craftsman who makes a table.
Sometimes he's going to make a simple table with four legs and that's good enough: it stands up.
There will be a song that stands on its own, and then by working on it more and more,
you get to a point where there are automatic reflexes that you have to avoid,
but you create your own language.
So, I think you get to a point where you've made one of your prettiest tables,
and you can't wait to invite all your friends over to see it.
Returning to Adidas, what inspires you in the ARKYN project?
In terms of the philosophy, the shoe itself, the brand, any specific thing.
This campaign's philosophy is that
it supports women who have many interests and many professions.
So, I see myself in it.
You too, I think.
And well, it's a sports shoe... I tend to like men's sports shoes over women's.
I don't know why they don't do both every time.
This time, it's the opposite: it's only available in a women's model.
So, like I was saying, the first time the project was presented to me,
I was quite surprised at the choice to create a sports shoe model exclusively for women.
I thought: "Hey, guys don't get this one".
It's a sort of refusal, denial, kind of like "You're not coming here, not this time."
I found it pretty surprising. Then, after thinking more about it,
I find it pretty nice because we're so used to what we see every day, not necessarily in fashion,
but in general, that there are things we don't necessarily think about in daily life,
even in terms of language like we just said, where thin
I like the idea that someone decided to say "Not for you, not tonight."
Then, there's that plurality again, it's something essential and, like we said,
in American culture it's something that's sought after and will be held up and celebrated.
Even though it's something that takes life in France, with a hell of a lot of warmth and generosity,
where I understand it was more complicated a few years ago.
I think I've been pretty lucky to have been well received by the business.
Anyway, I like that there's street brand that takes this stance,
saying "Hey girls, you're allowed, and it's really great. Come on."
Plus, it's a pretty recent idea that we have to make a single choice.
I mean, think of the Renaissance man Leonardo da Vinci,
who had something like 17 jobs,
and was a botanist, event organizer, poet, physicist.
Event organizer?
Yeah. He organized great parties.
We remember. So, we isolated and rewrote history so that he was known for only one thing,
but I think that for a very, very long time, people
Really? I didn't know. That's interesting.
Oh yeah. Apparently fabulous parties. You're invited to the next one!
I have a question for you, Joséphine.
You've got a pretty sexy image. Is it a form of empowerment for you?
I think we have to do things just for fun, too.
I take what I do totally seriously.
My new project is very serious,
there isn't a lot of irony compared to the last one.
The same is true about my film roles.
I was on the cover of Playboy. I did it, first of all,
"Hey, I wasn't bad once upon a time".
You know, because we need to do things for laughs too.
But it's not at all something I would do if I thought it was demeaning.
I think it's a way to be comfortable with my femininity.
I'm no model. I'm only 5 foot 3, and I have curves.
I thought it would be fun to put myself in that situation.
Plus, it was entirely among friends.
I didn't feel objectified at all.
We created the whole concept together, both in terms of the set design and the styling.
I didn't feel like I was being promoted because I was sexy or a sex object.
Instead it was more like: I feel comfortable with who I am in this fun little adventure.
You have to do stuff just for fun.
You need to be consistent, but you also need to have fun, like you said.
And Camélia, you started in television.
What clichés did you come up against, and how did you break them down?
There weren't really any clichés. I think they were more like reflexes.
During promotional tours, after a while people tended to talk more about my glasses than about my music.
So, we made a really stupid video, and we loved it because it was so totally stupid,
with violins and me totally full of myself, or feeling totally bad about myself,
taking my glasses and throwing them on the street.
It was a stupid little thing for fun, saying "Ok guys, and if we talk about my music?"
I've been really lucky to have worked with people who care about me.
I've had people tell me that since I came from TV, my music was too good.
People expected it to be of poorer quality since I came from TV.
It's abstract but flattering at the same time.
Plus, it's funny because it was someone from the TV industry who said it.
I think I've been pretty lucky.
I wanted to add something.
At a time when we're looking for equality, I don't think it means that we become men.
We need to do things that somehow highlight our femininity.
It's not a defect, and it doesn't mean we're less than they are.
We need to change what it means.
Yes, and we can have the power to say:
"I'm a woman and I'm comfortable being a woman and I'm not trying to be a man either.
I just want the same rights to do things that are perhaps more specific to women,
whether what we were talking about before, we don't need to diminish ourselves,
to express our sexy part, or whatever."
To be honest, I get the impression that our generation,
I don't know about you, but I'm lucky. Of all the guys and girls of my generation,
my girlfriends have said that they're not feminists because the word has an old-fashioned image
and doesn't reflect where we're at in terms of feminism.
They say that it's of no interest to them, and the guys feel pretty much the same.
It's clearly not a topic, and we can talk about a guy's
I get the impression that our generation still has a sort of blind colour...
I don't know. I don't know, we leave each other alone, don't we?
Thanks a lot.
Now, please welcome Daniëlle Cathari, a 23-year-old designer from Amsterdam and who speaks English.
So, we'll switch to English.
Please welcome Daniëlle Cathari, 23-year-old designer from Amsterdam.
So could you maybe tell us a little bit about yourself,
your background, your path as a designer, and how you ended up here?
Definitely. So, I am Daniëlle Cathari, I am 23 years old, I am from Amsterdam, I live in Amsterdam.
Since I was young, I have always been into fashion, I taught myself how to sew, from Youtube,
just cutting old garments apart to see how it was all constructed.
So my interest in fashion continued to grow, and this eventually, and very organically,
led to my decision to enrol in the Amsterdam Fashion Institute in Amsterdam.
So I went to fashion school, and in my third year, I pa
The response was so encouraging, so I wanted to keep on perfecting my skill.
This has been such a huge stepping stone in my career, ultimately getting me to where I am today.
So what happened exactly after that?
After that well, what happens tight now.
The whole AdiCollab. It's amazing, It has been such a great experience.
I am feeling super glad for this opportunity.
Last year, we started a conversation, Adidas and I, and from there, we started creating the collection.
And now, next week is the second launching, and I am very excited for that
And you are an Adidas creator, what does this mean exactly?
For me, it means you have amazing resources, and inspiration from the whole Adidas archive.
The team, the collaborators, the teammates, the whole team, we really worked closely together,
and we all work to create and to elaborate a certain vision, THE certain vision we wanted to have.
And it's also a huge, a global platform where I communicate and where I have my individuality to perform.
Can you perhaps tell me a little bit more about how the collaboration came about,
how they found you, how it progressed?
Yes, I started with
I was very interested in vintage sportswear, and particularly in Adidas track suits, super iconic!
And so I found that the designs that I made had a strong impact on my social media channel,
which is amazing, and I appreciate it a lot.
And this is actually also where Adidas first found out
And from there, we started a conversation, and now we are here.
We also have some students from Institut français de la mode.
Do you have any advice for young designers?
That would be to never compromise your creativity, and your vision
That's really corny, but really stay true to yourself,
because at the end, this is what will set you apart what people will notice.

Why do I sound terrible in recording? - Duration: 5:13.
Hello all, welcome welcome to the very first episode of the Speak Better podcast.
I am Phong Ngo, your host and also your coach in this program.
And in today episode, we shall find out the truth behind why does your voice sound so
different in a recording.
Right, ok, have you ever come across this moment in your life when you'd listen to
the recording of your own voice and you ask yourself " OMG!
Do I really sound like this?
Am I that disgusting?
OMG, I'm so ashamed of myself!
Yes yes, if you ever had that thought before, you're not alone!
Cause I've been there and… experienced that.
And the reason for that is, because every sound we hear—birds chirping, bees buzzing,
people talking, and recordings—is a wave of pressure moving through the air.
Our outer ears "catch" these waves and funnel them into our head through the ear
canal.
They strike the ear drum, which starts vibrating, and those vibrations travel to the inner ear,
where they're translated into signals that can be sent via the auditory nerve to the
brain for interpretation.
The inner ear doesn't get stimulated only by external sound waves coming down the ear
canal, though.
It also picks up on vibrations happening inside the body, and it's a combination of these
two things that makes up the sound you hear when you talk.
When you speak, vibrations from your vocal cords resonate in your throat and mouth, and
some get transmitted and conducted by the bones in your neck and head.
The inner ear responds to these just like any other vibrations, turning them into electrical
signals and sending them to the brain.
Whenever you speak, your inner ear is stimulated both by internal vibrations in your bones
and by the sound coming out of your mouth and traveling through the air and into the
ears.
This combination of vibrations coming to the inner ear by two different paths gives your
voice (as you normally hear it) a unique character that other, "air only" sounds don't
have.
In particular, your bones enhance deeper, lower-frequency vibrations and give your voice
a fuller, bassier quality that's lacking when you hear it on a recording.
Alright, for anyone who find the information was too scientific, here I have a simplified
explanation for it.
What makes the recording of your own voice sound so different.
It's because when you speak you hear your own voice in two different ways.
The first is as above, vibrating sound waves hitting your ear drum.
The second way is via vibrations inside your skull actually set off by your vocal chords.
Those vibrations travel up through your bony skull and again set the ear drum vibrating.
However as they travel through the bone they spread out and lower in pitch, giving you
a false sense of bass.
Then when you hear a recording of your voice, it sounds distinctly higher, which is something
you never expected to hear.
Alright, alright, so there goes the answer for you.
If you find yourself struggle with your voice and you don't like how you sound in your
recording, work with me more and do my training and you could improve your voice within few
weeks.
That's it for the episode today.
