Youtube daily report Jan 28 2019

Many Vietnamese people confuse the /ɔʊ/ gliding vowel with the simple /ɑ/ and /ɔ/ vowels

so let's see how we make the English /ɔʊ/ sound correctly.

The /ɔʊ/ sound has two parts:

a starting /ɔ/ sound and an ending /ʊ/ sound,

and you have to pronounce BOTH the /ɔ/ and then the /ʊ/

to make sure that foreigners understand your English easily.

The /ɔʊ/ sound itself is not difficult for Vietnamese people,

so they can usually say "go", "no" and "low" accurately.

However, when the /ɔʊ/ is followed by a consonant,

Vietnamese forget to say the /ʊ/ sound and they only say a short /ɔ/ or /ɑ/ sound instead.

Let's look at the example word "home".

This word has four sounds: /h/, /ɔ/, /ʊ/ and /m/:

So after the /ɔ/ sound we cannot jump immediately to the /m/ sound,

we have to say the /ʊ/ first.

After the /ɔ/ sound, the lips will not close immediately,

but will round a little more, and come forward a little to make the /ʊ/,

before closing in completely for the /m/ sound.

Because we have to say this /ʊ/ vowel as well

and because we need the time to move our lips

from the /ɔ/ position to the /ʊ/ position,

the /ɔʊ/ cannot be said as a short sound.

Compare the /ɔʊ/ sound to the /ɔ/ and /ɑ/ sounds:

the /ɔʊ/ is longer and the lips are moving while you are saying it,

whereas the /ɔ/ and /ɑ/ are shorter and the lips don't move during the sound:

short /ɔ/ - gliding /ɔʊ/ - short /ɑ/ - gliding /ɔʊ/

So when practicing the /ɔʊ/ sound,

focus on the /ʊ/ part and how your lips round more and come forward at the end of the sound,

before closing completely for the /m/ sound:

Here are some words with the /ɔʊ/ sound:

Pause this video and practice saying these words with the correct /ɔʊ/ sound.

Remember that the /ɔʊ/ is NOT a short sound

and that you need to say the /ʊ/ sound after the /ɔ/ sound.

Also, make sure that you are not saying a long /ɔ:/ sound instead of the /ɔʊ/ sound.

It's "hope", not /hɔ:p/, and "note", not /nɔ:t/.

When we say the /ɔʊ/, the lips must come a bit forward

and close almost fully to make the /ʊ/ sound.

If you find it difficult to say the /ɔʊ/ correctly in these words

and if you hear that you miss the /ʊ/ part of /ɔʊ/,

then first try saying the words without the final consonant

and feel your lips rounding and coming forward on the /ʊ/ sound.

When you can do this well, only then add the final consonant,

but first put a little gap between the /ɔʊ/ and the final consonant

and then gradually take away this gap:

Don't forget to use a mirror to check your lip position

to make sure that you are also saying the /ʊ/ sound.

Pause now.

Arsenal 'ramp up interest in Ligue 1 sensation' - Duration: 2:27.

Arsenal are stepping up their interest in Ligue 1 starlet Marcus Thuram, according to reports

Thuram, the son of former France defender Lillian, plays up front and has been attracting interest from a host of Premier League teams

But TeamTalk report that the Gunners are now increasing their efforts to land the 21-year-old

Thuram has been impressing for Guingamp in France's top tier this season, despite his side struggling at the bottom of the table

Brighton , Cardiff, Crystal Palace , Watford , Southampton and Everton are all also thought to have been keeping an eye on Thuram's progress

Perisic hands in transfer request   has handed in a transfer request amid reports Arsenal are keen to sign the Croatian

The winger is desperate to leave the Serie A giants but Inter Milan have yet to receive a suitable offer for the 29-year-old

Inter Milan director Guiseppe Marotta said: "Perisic has asked to leave but there is no suitable offer for him

We will see in the coming days.  "We will listen to the request of Perisic, he has put in a transfer request; we must try to satisfy him but also respect the value of him

" No recall for Chambers   Arsenal do not have the option to recall Calum Chambers from his Fulham loan

The Gunners have been hit with a defensive crisis ahead of the visit of Cardiff on Tuesday night

But there is no chance of Chambers returning to the Emirates this month.  There is no clause in the loan agreement that would allow the Gunners to recall Chambers, even if they managed to persuade Fulham to let him go

Rams DC Wade Phillips pays homage to father Bum Phillips with fantastic outfit - Duration: 13:05.

CONNECTTWEETLINKEDINCOMMENTEMAILMOREThe Los Angeles Rams' send-off rally is now over, and the team is on its way to Atlanta for the Super Bowl

The Rams have a lot of stylish players, but it was defensive coordinator Wade Phillips' fashion sense that stole the show

Phillips rocked the runway with a massive cowboy hat and a tracksuit. Phillips has indisputably claimed the title of league's funniest coordinator this season, and has shown off his sense of humor every chance he gets

He added a Bum Phillips-inspired jacket for the Rams' arrival in Atlanta, too.Like a boss

#SBLIIIpic.twitter.com/aUyPBZAnr3— Los Angeles Rams (@RamsNFL) January 28, 2019Bum Phillips, Wade's father and inspiration for his Twitter handle @sonofbum, served as head coach of the Houston Oilers and New Orleans Saints from 1975-1985

Wade served on his staff at both stops. Bum Phillips died in 2013 at the age of 90

Son of Bum. @sonofbum | #SBLIIIpic.twitter.com/uS6iHzVGbh— Los Angeles Rams (@RamsNFL) January 28, 2019There was no official indication Sunday night as to whether the jacket Phillips was wearing was actually his father's, or just one very similar in design

It's dad's jacket!! pic.twitter.com/inSJTRP2TH— Eric Edholm (@Eric_Edholm) January 28, 2019Wade Phillips has become universally beloved by Rams fans, and he pulls off the cowboy hat here like nobody else could

All jokes aside, the Super Bowl will be Phillips' time to shine, and he's had plenty of success coordinating defenses against Tom Brady and the Patriots in the past

If he can keep the Rams' defensive success going and help deliver a championship, you might see 10-gallon cowboy hats popping up at the Coliseum next year
