We've been talking a lot this week about what God expects of us.
Sometimes people will look at Christians and say,
"I don't understand why you do what you do.
It's like you pick and choose the laws you want to follow from the Bible."
How would you answer?
Well, I thought that this, today I'd take the opportunity to try to answer that question.
You see, when God gave the Israelites the law on Mount Sinai,
he gave them the law.
Now, for
teaching purposes, we've divided that up into three categories:
We talk about civil laws, ceremonial laws, moral laws.
The civil law governed everyday life.
Things like, if my ox gores you, this is the penalty.
The ceremonial laws dealt with
the worship life. How many sacrifices to make. When do you sacrifice them?
Where do you sacrifice them? It dealt with things like
What can you eat? What can't you eat?
Like, you can't eat bacon. I would personally struggle with that one, but I digress.
The moral law was God's will for all people for all time.
And a good summary of the moral law is actually the Ten Commandments,
which you're very familiar with.
So which commandments do we need to follow?
The apostle Paul says in Colossians,
And so the way Paul sets it up
is, imagine that
this is a building, because it says building.
You've got the sun shining this way and someone
is walking down the sidewalk
but you can only see their shadow.
Now, can you tell some things about the person?
Yeah, you can tell
roughly how large they are, maybe if they have large hair
or long hair.
But you can't tell the color of their eyes.
Um, and this is what Paul says the Old Testament law was.
This law was just a shadow
of Jesus.
But once Jesus comes, do you keep looking at the shadow?
No, then you look at Jesus. So,
does that mean we don't have to follow the Ten Commandments?
Well, as they're recorded for us in Exodus chapter 20 in the Old Testament,
all of those have been fulfilled by Jesus.
And yet, since they are part of God's moral law,
his will for all people for all time,
Jesus repeated things like,
"You shall have no other gods. You shouldn't misuse God's name.
You should make time for God's Word in worship.
Honor the authority that is over you.
Don't murder, don't commit adultery, don't steal, don't give false testimony, don't covet."
Do these things sound familiar?
It's actually why we can worship on Sunday.
Because Jesus fulfilled the Sabbath,
and he gave us the heart of that commandment,
to gladly hear and learn his Word.
And what do we hear when we do?
We hear about a Savior who lived for us,
who died for us, who rose for us and who now lives for us.
God bless you as you strive to live for him, according to his will.
We are so moved by all the love and support you've all shown
