Hey there booktube Katie here and you're watching Katie loves to read. So after
doing my books I'll probably never read tag and seeing that you guys do indeed
enjoy the occasional controversial video I thought today we would talk about
popular books that I don't like so here goes nothing. As always this is not
an insult to you if you like these books, we just disagree so no need to attack me in
the comments. The first popular book I really don't like his Queen of Shadows
by Sarah J Maas, I know that there is a significant minority of people who
really thought that this book was crap and I was among them. I really enjoyed
the first three of Sarah J masses what does she call them whatever the Celena
Sardothien series is called. The throne of glass series? I don't know. I was going
through my ya binge phase, I just started booktube I just started getting
back into reading and ya is a really nice entry point if that's the point
you're at your life where you haven't been reading much and you just
want something that's maybe not super challenging. There are a lot of YA books
that fit that bill and then there are a lot of challenging YA books out there.
This is not one of the challenging ones and I really liked fantasy, I got
really into the series. I fell in love with Chaol and then Chaol got yep
treated very badly in this book and then all of the characters felt completely out of
character and I just I realized I was done with this. This was support where I
kind of discovered adult fantasy and I was like yeah I don't think this kind of
ya fantasy is for me anymore, there are plenty of good ya fantasies
out there I will read but this is absolute trash and I do not need it in
my life and since then I have not read another Sarah J Maas book and girl has
problems. She does not understand how representation of marginalized groups
works a lot so ever and yeah she's just not a very good writer point blank when
I look back on like the um her sentence structure nah. There's often so
much padding in her stories that could just be sliced right out of there it
should just been edited properly and suffice it to say I just didn't enjoy
this book and I steer clear of Sarah J Maas.
nNw the next book just one thing Nebula Award and that is All the Birds in the
Sky by Charlie Jane Anders this is this weird mishmash of science fiction and
fantasy. It's about two kids who are friends in school, one of them invents a
two-second time machine and the other one finds out that she's a witch who
could talk to birds. I don't know this book was just like, I don't even know
what to say about this. iIt didn't find it's audience, it started with the
writing like a YA book at the start and personally I enjoyed that. I was enjoying
the tone of the start and then when the kids grow up the tone completely changed
and it totally lost me. I hated the ending with a passion, it was a terrible
ending. I hated both of the characters, the plot didn't intrigue me and the only
thing I was actually interested in was the assassins
and we never got much discussion of the assassins so I'd I don't I don't
understand what the hype is with this book and I know a lot of people love it
clearly it just won a big award but it's not the kind of book for me whatsoever.
The next book I have on here was also a 2016 release and that was This Savage
Song by VE Schwab. I like VE Schwab, I like Vicious, I liked her A Darker Shade
of Magic series even though it's not necessarily the most accomplished
fantasy series - it's fun, I like it. This Savage Song on the other hand I hated
absolutely hate it. It was essentially twilight with monsters, it felt like
Twilight the whole entire time and I was bored and I wanted it to end. The one thing
I will give it is it read really really quickly so even though I was reading it
with a rather intense hangover I got through it in a day and possibly the
hangover contributed to the fact that I wasn't enjoying it,
but yeah the world-building was boring, it wasn't an original story and I just
yeah the only thing I liked about it was the different types of monsters, that was
it that was really it. I certainly won't be reading the sequel in this
duology. The next book also won't be a surprise to anyone - The Name of the
Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. This is one that I didn't hate at the time I read it,
I felt it was fairly mediocre but my animosity for this book has grown over
time and it might be because it has a lot of crazy stans out there who want
to kill you whenever you say that you don't think that Patrick Rothfuss walks
on air and can never do anything wrong because they're totally obsessed with
him and ensorcelled and in his power and if you're not, you must be doing
something wrong with your life but I don't like this book. I didn't find the
world that intriguing, I thought the writing was meh, the humor was good, there were
way too many coincidences driving the plot and the main character Kvothe or
however you say his name was an a**hole and I don't particularly love reading
about a**holes and he did some really stupid things and just overall and I'll
leave you with with one name: Denna or Diana or whatever her face was who
popped up to drive the plot at any given moment she really really irritated me
and then from what I hear the next book has like a weird fairy rape scene that
goes on for a quarter of the book so nope not going to be reading that, really don't
like this book and don't get the hype around the series. Next we have Among Others
by Jo Walton I think just about everyone knows why I dislike this book.
Apart from being slow and relatively boring, Jo Walton says some really nasty
things about Irish people in it which are so uncalled for and unnecessary
and [pause] I don't need that in my life. I don't need that in my life, I don't need
to buy any of Jo Walton's other books, I don't need to support her because if she
hates me and my people just because we're from a particular country then
clearly that's her problem and not mine. I'll link my review on
screen if you want to hear more of my angry rant about it. Next on the list
and Wuthering Heights hmm Wuthering Heights and I well we have a long
story. So we had to read this in sixth year, which is the final year of
secondary school in Ireland, for our Leaving Certificate. It was part of our
comparative studies for English so we compared it to a movie and to a play, loved
the movie, loved the play. Wuthering Heights was the actual worst. We had to
read it aloud in class and different people would have to take turns and we
read it aloud twice so I have this like terrible horrible story about awful
characters and uh just terrible plot hammered into my brain twice. It was like
pain it was pure pain and the funniest thing and probably the worst thing was
that our English teacher hated the book too but like another English teacher in
the school had chosen it as a book we have to use our comparative so we just
used to spend the whole time in English class bitching about the book and how
much we hated it and how much of an idiot the characters were and I know a
lot of people love this there is one girl in my class who just thought it was
the most wonderful tragic love story. I just couldn't I couldn't with those
characters I couldn't with their story the only person I liked is Hareton and
if it had been a book just about Hareton I probably would have enjoyed it yeah.
Also there's this weird necrophilia scene which was disturbing and totally
unnecessary and yeh. Next on this list is You will Know Me by Megan Abbott. I did
actually record a review video of this and then I never uploaded it and then I
lost the footage so I apologize for that but I had multiple problems with this
book it's basically a why a thriller set around a like an elite gymnast and not
only does it like reinforce a lot of negative stereotypes about gymnasts and
gymnastics and gymnastics coaches and I struggle with this book because it talks
about sexual abuse in gymnastics that's a huge problem at the moment in the u.s.
in particular with the Larry Nassar scandal. It's something that does
need to be talked about the way this book does it was seriously weird and
then the thing that really got to me about this book was the fact that it
would throw in gymnastics jargon that made no sense
like our lead character who was just like just had transitioned and qualified
to elite was doing a vault that no woman has ever managed to do and she doesn't
like she meant one thing but was saying the other and it was just clear there
was a lack of understanding in terms of technical stuff and in terms of what it
is like to be a gymnast I think and I don't know I feel like it was it was one
of these books that was big because it was released around the same time as the
Olympics and it was kind of I don't know catching people because you know
that post-olympic for your fan obsession. That's what it was trying to
tap into with the thriller. The story was predictable, it wasn't all that
interesting and yeah I don't know it just it did reinforce negative
stereotypes in gymnastics and it hadn't been fact checked properly I
think that's why it particularly annoyed me but I may have to rethink my opinion
on stereotypes in light of everything that has come out now but still I think
I might have to reread this one and come back to you
to be honest but I don't really want to so we'll see. Then I have The Unexpected
Everything by Morgan Matson. This is one of these books I was so excited about. I
had pre-ordered it and was coming out in the middle of my exams last year. I was
like it's gonna be the nicest break I'm going to sit down and read it 500 pages
long and I did read it really really quickly
but I had so many issues with it, so many issues. I will actually link my review
down below because it's been a while. All I just remember is this like frustration
with the degree of coincidences used to drive the plot it was just like.
Also the may characters mother had died of cancer and that is a little bit too
close to home with this book for me so I don't think that was something that was a
necessarily wrong with book, it was the place I was in at the time. I did not need to be
reading about a parent who's died and this book was doing that so that
probably didn't help but there were a lot of issues with this book and I don't
get how it did get so many positive reviews. The final book I have on my list
is Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. i know a lot of people love
this book - its new-age sci-fi about these two teens who have broken up and
are sort of together and there's an AI involved and they've been kicked off
their planet and now they're on three ships and it's all told in documents I
couldn't get into the format. It just made me feel really detached from the
story and from the characters and it took me I think two or three does to
actually finish this so even though it's actually a very quick read like I could
read like 100 pages in like a half an hour because of the formatting
I just, just couldn't get into it and then I just felt the plotline was
totally dull like two whiny teenagers, plot twists that were completely
predictable and it just it didn't do anything for me. I just felt like there
was a lot better SF I out there and I couldn't understand why this was getting
all of the hype and I presume just beyond good marketing and interesting
formatting it wouldn't have but thems the breaks kids I guess. Anyway those are
some of the popular books that I really didn't like. If you want to tell me what
a popular book you didn't like is you can leave that in a comment down below,
if you want to shout at me for not liking your favorite book you're also
free to do that just please keep it civil, anyway thank you guys for watching
and I will see you next video bye!
