Robert F. Kennedy used a now-famous phrase in a speech in 1966 when he said, "There

is a Chinese curse, which says 'May he live in interesting times.'"

Kennedy continued, "Like it or not, we live in interesting times.

They are times of danger and uncertainty; but they are also the most creative of any

time in the history of mankind."

Though Kennedy's generation had ample reason to believe they lived in extraordinary times

of pain, danger, and uncertainty, we might very well assume the same for our day.

This weekend, like many of you, I watched with disbelief the events in Charlottesville.

Everyone who works in an American college or university shares the pain our brothers

and sisters at the University of Virginia feel today.

When violence erupts, the evidence of our national failure in teaching and embracing

the critical importance of civil discourse and the rejection of hate, bigotry, and violence

is stark and gut-wrenching.

The heartbreaking development in Charlottesville this weekend is only the latest evidence that

the hard work of teaching and embracing a more noble way forward must become a national

priority, with our leaders and our universities setting the best examples.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the many people who have been hurt both physically

and emotionally by the weekend's events.

I have extended our encouragement, our prayers and our offer of support to University of

Virginia President Teresa Sullivan.

Let me state unequivocally, our university condemns bigotry, prejudice, and violence.

As University of Virginia President Sullivan stated this weekend, "Violence is not Free Speech."

Instead we celebrate our diversity as a reflection of the beautiful world we live in, and we

embrace civil discourse as the most noble environment for the advancement of human knowledge.

As we prepare to welcome our freshmen this week, and eventually more than 29,000 pirates

to our beloved university, our commitment is to set an example of what is best about

a university.

We may live in interesting times, but we can choose the path we follow as a community of

students and scholars.

To our faculty and staff, thank you for your commitment to our students and their success,

to public service, and regional transformation.

Together, we can make sure these days are instead among the most creative in history

as we prepare our students to make a positive difference in the world they will inherit.

Why Fruits Change Color and Flavor as They Ripen - Duration: 7:05.

come in a wide array of colors that change throughout their ripening process, with the

brightest colors often occurring when the fruit is optimally ripened.

But why do fruits change color at all?

There are two ways to answer this question- first, looking at what's going on internally

while the fruit is ripening and second looking at why these plants have evolved to do this

at all, especially considering it's seemingly a massive waste of the plant's energy and

resources to produce fruit of any color around its seeds.

While there are many different types of fruits, speaking generally, many fruits start out

some shade of green thanks to an abundance of chlorophyll, which, with the help of the

sun and nutrients from the soil, is used to produce much of the contents of the fruit,

at this stage mainly starch.

At a certain point in the fruit's development, usually when the seed is nearly fully matured,

the ripening process begins, in many fruits triggered by the naturally produced hydrocarbon

gas ethylene.

Exactly how ethylene facilitates ripening is still an ongoing area of research, but,

in a nutshell, receptors in the plant end up binding to the ethylene.

This triggers certain genes to turn off and others to turn on, resulting in the creation

of various enzymes that facilitate the ripening process, such as amylases, which converts

the starch to simple sugars, and pectinases, which breaks down the cell walls of the fruit,

softening it to make the inside more accessible.

While the enticing innards are being sweetened and made easier to access, the chlorophyll

is broken down via hydrolytic enzymes, ultimately removing the green color.

As this is happening some pigments are getting synthesized while others that were there all

along, but masked by the chlorophyll, are revealed.

The two primary culprits producing the colors here are carotenoids, which are generally

responsible for the orange and yellow colors in fruits, and anthocyanins, which are usually

responsible for the purples, reds, and blues.

(Incidentally, a similar process to this is what's happening in autumn with tree leaves,

Now for why certain plants have evolved to produce colorful, tasty fruit.

Other than in science fiction, plants are relatively immobile so those that have survived

over the millennia have evolved a few ingenious methods for spreading their seeds.

Some have buoyant seeds that float on the wind or water, others are carried and buried

by industrious rodents and mammals, while still others stick to the fur and feathers

of passing fauna and hitch a ride.

But perhaps the most common, and certainly the most scatological, way seeds are spread

is when they are eaten, and later pooped out, by animals.

Beyond potentially spreading the seed far and wide, this also has the side benefit of

providing the seed a good starter of nutrition.

To facilitate this type of dispersal, fruits have evolved to become tastier when their

seeds are ready and to change to a more noticeable color as a potentially attractive signal to

animals that it is time to eat.

Animals that eat fruits are frugivores, including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish.

Among these, it appears that birds and mammals play the largest role in seed dispersal, and,

in fact, more than 35% of all terrestrial birds and 20% of non-marine mammals are frugivores,

at least to some extent.

Nonetheless, the others have a role to play, and fish are especially key to dispersing

tropical seeds, while tortoises and lizards are integral to seed dispersal in insular

and arid ecosystems.[1]

As far back as the 19th century, Charles Darwin in On the Origin of the Species (1859) noticed

that frugivores (or more particularly, birds) more commonly ate brightly-colored, as opposed

to dull-colored, fruits.

Subsequent studies discerned that, for European birds, the fruit they ate was most frequently

red, while for those in the New World, and neo- and sub- tropics, black fruits are the

most popular.

Interestingly, in those regions where fruit eating birds were less common, multi-colored

fruits proliferated, and subsequent studies showed that birds were more likely to remove

a fruit with more than one color than a mono-colored fruit.

Similarly, in at least one study, scientists found that multi- and brighter- colored ripe

fruits were more common in the understory (to be visible in the low light), while duller

colors were found higher up (where it is easier for a fruit to be noticed).[2]

The hue, brightness and location of the variety of different ripe fruit colors has led many

to conclude that color serves three purposes: (1) it draws attention to the fruit; (2) it

reveals (or camouflages) the fruit's location depending on ripening stage (often hiding

when not ripe and revealing when the seed inside is ready for dispersal); and (3) it

signals when the fruit is ripe and, thus, optimally tasty for its target consumer.

Of course, there may be other reasons why fruits have different colors, and one theory

holds that blue, brown and black fruits may have evolved their dark colors as this "absorbs

more radiation . . . thereby raising fruit temperatures [and] increasing metabolic and

developmental rates."[3]

Nonetheless, seed dispersal appears to be the primary purpose of a fruit's coloring,

as is the production of the tasty, juicy pulp, so sought after by the dispersers.

In fact, it has been noted that "the energy allocated to produce the pulp . . represents

a cost to the plant that probably has no purpose other than to attract seed dispersers and

to protect the seeds."[4]

In addition to transporting eaten seeds, it is believed that disperser ingestion also

aids in seed germination.

In the disperser's gut, the pulp, which if not removed could preclude sprouting, is

removed, as often is all or a part of the tough outer seed coating – the removal of

which frequently speeds up germination.

Another benefit of ingestion is that, as previously mentioned, when the seeds finally leave the

disperser at a distant location, they are surrounded by a rich source of potential fertilizer

(known to you and me as fecal matter).

HX Outdoors ZD010 Knife Review. Smoother but not cheaper than a Colt 45. - Duration: 6:57.

According to knife theory, the bigger, the heavier, the folding knife- the more of a

beating it can take.

Throw a lock on a lock.

And you can baton right through that log.

Ok that's really not true.

And by the way I exchanged my Lion Steel SR-11 at Blade HQ- a big thanks to them... by flexing

their return policy... but unfortunately that lock bar still flexes more than their return

policy.

If you remember that review- well this model still has that problem.

But we're not here to talk about Lion Steel a $200 knife, we're here to talk about another

big ass flipper the HX Outdoors ZD-010.

Unfortunately this video can't answer why we need a folder that weighs as much as a

fixed blade or if you'll ever amount to anything.

So let's stare at the numbers for a minute and see if we can figure out why videos of

a similar length are more watchable.

The blade length and cutting edge.

Oh I think I figured it out.

The handle size and that grip area... made for big hands.

The spine thickness and handle thickness.

And the tallness closed and flipper protrusion.

There are a few key differences between my Italian made flipper that costs $200 and this

$16 flipper made by fine Chinese craftsmen.

And none of those differences will make me carry any one more.

But a big one is the steel.

The ZD010 uses 8Cr14MoV, which has never been a steel I have seen anyone go out of their

way to praise.

It wasn't razor sharp out of the box... so after my minor beatings it took me about 30

minutes to touch up- oh wait maybe that means it's a super steel.

Or just hard man.

It features a drop point and a very slight hollow grind.

With a semi polished satin finish.

It has real thick jimping on the blade spine, and thins out near the tip.

Blade centering is pretty good.

The blade is deployed by a flipper stud, and can really be deployed easily however you

hold it.

It is one of the smoothest ball bearing flippers I have tested.

Not necessarily the fastest, because of it's blade size... but pretty close.

If it had a stronger detent it would rocket out like an assisted.

Still though, it's much smoother and easier to deploy than my Sr-11a... but it kind of

has a weak detent.

So if you drop it, like I did a lot, the blade would probably pop out.

The flipper stud is nice and smooth, and probably the least fatiguing flipper I've used from

full open to close.

The blade is locked into place with a liner lock that's neither overly strong, or secure...

but it's as reliable as my lion steel rotoblock with even the rotoblock engaged.

For regular use it's a fine lock.

Whacking the spine on the lock repeatedly didn't cause it to fold... although it did

once when I threw it at the stump.

I said detent was sort of weak and it doesn't take much to deploy the blade when closed

without hitting the stud.

The handle is a nice size.

It has a full liner with a little bit of skeletonization .... or rather weight saving holes drilled...

otherwise it would weigh 8 ounces presumably.

It has G10 camo scales, that facilitates a new knife every few months if you use it in

the woods frequently.

The G10 and various ridges allow the knife to be not too slippery when wet and create

some great hot spots when using hard... although, regular pocket knife use it's fairly comfortable.

I don't really need the thick jimping up top, but then again I don't need a nearly 7 ounce

folder either.

The pocket clip ain't changeable or reversible or assignable.

Tip down blade forward in my right pocket.

That gets a thumbs down for tactic-ability.

Ok, so I think the need for a folder this large is basically overcompensating... something

I guess I could say for about 3/4 of my knife collection.

Let's look at a few other big knives.

Like the SR-11... which has a slightly smaller blade, a nice comfortable handle... more comfortable

than this one- but also it's a harder knife to flip with a stronger detent, but a lock

that functions the same despite the marketing.

How about another knife that I basically have no practical use for but I spent about $160

on.

The Spyderco K2.

It's bigger but with a handle that doesnt feel as comfortable.

It also looks imposing and tactical, even though it doesn't have a beard and a tight

shirt.

Ok I stole that joke from a subscriber.

I prefer the spyderco because it's bigger and weighs about the same and I paid more

for it.

Ok another Chinese flipper, that I think showed up in a video or two ago.

This one sucks at flipping, is heavy, and even it's parents don't like it.

What a disappointment.

The Enlan EW054, something I keep around for a reason I can't think of- hey these are like

$15 too.

Ok let's do one more.

How about the D2 steel and another large knife you'll see a review on from me very soon.

The Y-Start JIN02... which looks like something out of the Soviet Union in the 80's.

I like the clean design of that one a bit better, even though it's isnt a smooth AF

flipper like this Ok, should you buy this knife.

Why should you buy this knife.

I don't know you figure it out.

I don't even know why I buy expensive knives I don't use.

Alright I'll give you one thing... it flips easier than probably most or all knives you

own... and it could conveniently open on the ground if you drop it.

Digital Transformation at MicroStrategy: IT and the New Services Economy - Duration: 5:06.

I'm Michael Krigsman, an industry analyst and the host of CxOTalk.

And I'm here in Las Vegas at FinancialForce.com's Community Live 2017 conference.

And I'm speaking with Ferny Bengali, who is the VP of Applications at Microstrategy.

Hey, Ferny!

How are you doing?

Good!

How are you?

I am well.

So, tell us about MicroStrategy.

MicroStrategy is an enterprise software company, and we are the best BI tool out there.

You've been around for a long time.

We're actually the original BI tool.

And you're the VP of Applications, so what do?

What does that mean?

So, I work under the CIO's office, and I manage all of our software applications.

So you're a part of IT?

I am a part of IT, but funny enough, I have no IT background.

Okay, tell us about that!

So, just came up from an accounting and consulting background, and they really wanted somebody

for this job that could help them modernize their applications, which is my role.

So, your background is very clearly with the business, and it sounds like you're taking

that and applying it very directly to your activities within IT.

I hate to say "within IT" because it's really focused outside of IT.

Well, I'm actually helping optimize the business processes for everybody, every other

department in the company.

What does that actually translate to?

So, I have marketing coming to me and saying, "Hey, we can't get leads out to our internal

reps fast enough.

Can you implement X tool," right?

And I'll think through and help them say, "Okay, before I implement the new, shiny

tool that you've heard about or watched a YouTube video on, walk me through what is

your leads process?

What tools do we use today?

What people are involved?

What is the process involved?"

And, then I will help them tailor a solution.

It may be a new tool.

It may be optimizing something we have currently.

Or, it may just be a business process change.

Do we really need a new software application?

That's my job.

I'll implement it for you.

Or, is it something we can just tweak in something current, or a business process?

At this conference, there has been a lot of talk about the new services economy, and it

sounds like you are applying this concept directly to your work inside IT.

I'm trying to make IT a services organization.

They have customers.

Their customers are corporate and around the organization, but we should treat them as

if they were external paying customers.

And, you actually are using FinancialForce to manage IT as if it's a professional services

organization, in fact.

Yes.

We primarily implemented the PSA tool to manage our consulting arm, because we do external

services out to our clients and customers.

But, I'm actually also using the tool to manage my internal projects.

That's a really interesting use-case for professional services automation software,

and again, it stems from your focus on IT as a business partner.

To be honest, we've had no issues extending the software to do that, because as I said,

we're a services organization, and without that customer service hat on, most of us wouldn't

be employed.

What are the challenges involved in rethinking IT from this service perspective?

Making them understand the value and the proposition we bring to the table.

I've done that by ensuring that not only do I have the right IT people in the organization,

but I've also hired-in a marketing person, somebody who's got a finance hat on, somebody

who's got an accounting hat on, a sales hat; in the past, so that we're bringing that expertise

to the table from a decision making perspective.

So you want IT to actually possess the full range of business expertise?

Absolutely.

It's been very successful.

We've been brought to the table, our adoption is a lot better, and we're not necessarily

just back-end people implementing systems anymore.

I know that you've spoken about wanting a seat at the table.

Mhmm.

What does that mean in your case; in your context?

Just like if you were to hold a product conference like the one we're at right now, you would

bring sales and marketing into the table.

You'd try to think about what customers you want there, who you're marketing to,

all those kinds of things.

I'm also trying to bring IT to that table; the internal IT department.

You may be looking at three different venues.

We can help you understand which of your venues are going to accommodate the people that you

need from a wireless and infrastructure perspective.

We can also think through what kind of support you need at the conference so we can bring

that expertise to the table, and focus the decision to be better because now, you've

got more facts.

Before we finish, give us advice.

Share your advice for other IT organizations who want to have that kind of relationship

with the business, but they're maybe struggling to do it.

My advice would be: Hire the right skill set.

Ensure that you're able to scale properly; don't do too much, too fast.

And, really focus on the process.

2015-2017 F150 Stainless Works Cat-Back Exhaust - Dual Mid-Side Exit 5.0L Sound Clip & Install - Duration: 6:48.

The Stainless Works Cat-Back Exhaust System, featuring the dual mid-side e xit configuration should

appeal to the new F-150 owners out there who want a noticeable increase both inside and

outside.

In volume, over your factory system, and you just really dig that dual mid-side configuration,

which I think is one of the coolest looks right now going for the F-150.

In addition to that guys, plain and simple, you should be checking this thing out if you

want a quality system, quality materials, and you'd like to keep the price point below

$1000 bucks.

Well this install, it's gonna be very straightforward making for a simple one-out-of-three wrench

on the difficulty meter.

So Stainless Works is certainly making their presence known in the newer F-150 market with

their exhaust offerings, bringing a few different variations to the table, giving prospective

buyers out there a few different options.

Now the system that we have in the video is what's known as their Resonator Cat-Back Exhaust

System.

It is available in the factory connect configuration which we have here, and also their performance

connect variation.

Now the factory connect version is as it sounds.

Right, it's designed to work with the factory manifolds or factory headers still in place

along with that factory mid-pipe making for a very easy install with no other parts needed.

The Performance Connect version, on the other hand, will require the use of a set of Stainless

Works long tube headers along with the corresponding mid-pipe, and therefore will not work with

the factory stuff or factory manifold still in place.

This is very important and just make sure you're ordering the correct exhaust for your

setup.

You heard the sound clips at the very top of the video so ultimately you can be the

judge and jury, but in my opinion the Stainless Works systems for the five-liter truck just

sound awesome.

They're bringing out some good tone, but they're not hitting you over the head with overall

volume.

And that really is the case here with this particular Cat-Back that we have in this video.

In my opinion, this one isn't quite as loud as their Turbo S2 variety, so breaking out

the wake the neighbor scale, I'm going soft three out of five on my one to five, or one

to wake the neighbors scale.

Again, you're getting a noticeable increase in volume both inside and outside of the truck,

but it's just a tad tamer than their S2 variety.

With the sound covered, let's move into the construction and material aspect here of this

review.

And in true Stainless Works fashion, you're really getting some top-quality stuff here.

304 grade stainless steel throughout, the premium material in the exhaust world.

Three-inch mandrill bent tubing, what little of it there is.

All the welds here are tig-welded for added strength.

The entire system is made in the USA and is backed by their limited lifetime warranty.

Again, the centerpiece here for this particular system is their resonator-style muffler, this

long guy here.

There's actually some chambers going on inside the muffler which you can't really see, and

everything is gonna exit out these 3.5-inch stainless steel tips, also 304 grade, and

they are polished to a mirror finish.

Let's go back and talk about that dual mid-side exit configuration, because I think it's one

of the coolest exhausts out there right now.

They call it the Dual Mid-Side Exit, I just call it the lightning exit because in my opinion

this just totally reminds me of the early 2000s SVT 4 Lightning.

You're dumping the exhaust right before that passenger side rear tire.

And again, I know I've said it a few times, I'll say it again.

I just think it looks really cool.

If you don't feel that way, if you're not a big fan of this configuration, again, Stainless

Works has a few different offerings for the 2015 and newer F-150s, so if you really like

the quality, you like the price point of the Stainless Works stuff, check out some of the

other options on the site, they do have a few different configurations available for

your truck.

A lot of times you'll hear manufacturers refer to a Cat-Back as a power modification here,

and while there is some benefit to be had there, this is mainly gonna be more of a sound

or appearance benefit first with a small bump in power taking a back seat to those first

two things I just mentioned.

Now if you were to go with that Performance Connect version instead with the long tube

headers and the aftermarket mid pipe, sure you're gonna see some bigger gains there,

but also expect a slightly larger investment in both time and money.

Moving on to the install and as mentioned at the very top of this video, you're looking

at a pretty straightforward job here with the Stainless Works system for any super crew

or super cab F-150 owner out there.

So I'm sticking with what I said at the top of this video.

One out of three wrenches on the difficulty meter, maybe an hour to two before you're

making some noise in the garage or driveway.

As far as tools, you're looking at a basic socket set here.

Hanger removal tool, if you don't have one of those, don't worry, neither do I. I just

always use a flathead screwdriver or pry bar just to help you remove the actual hanger

from the rubber portion on your truck.

I also like to use a little bit of penetrating oil, whether it be WD-40, PB Blaster, whatever

I have laying around the shop.

This just helps make that a little bit easier in addition to loosening up some of those

bolts on your factory exhaust system.

When it does come time to get this puppy in place, again, you're gonna need to remove

that factory system first.

Obviously, there's a couple bolts there, the entire system will drop down in one piece.

Then you can get to work installing the new Stainless Works system.

Work from front to back, you can leave pipe in place, get the muffler in place, and then

finally the tips here.

And again, you're looking at an hour or two tops.

No cutting, no permanent modification needed.
