We love engineers, but sometimes they need to be taken to one side so someone can have a quiet word with them. Heres the top 10 maddest engines ever fitted to cars. 1) Volkswagen Passat W8.
This was the peak-Piech era of Volkswagen engines seemingly developed using a random number and letter generator in a quest to push the brand upmarket.
But instead of making a super-hot Golf, it went in the Passat to create a luxury express that fewer than 250 UK buyers sought out. 2) Lancia Thema 8.
Possibly the most spectacular bit of parts bin excavation ever, the 8.32 took the Tipo 105L Ferrari V8 – its usual home being the 308 GTB quattrovalvole – and put it in the nose of the front-drive Type Four Thema.
Madness, especially when a cambelt change needs 12 hours of labour.
The only V5 car engine to make it into production, you have to wonder if this qualifies as unique genius or wilful obscurity.
Essentially a VR6 with a cylinder lopped off, it offered 148bhp then 168bhp when it switched to four valves per cylinder – but still less than the more economical 1.8T. 4) Cadillac Fleetwood 8-6-4.
A good idea that arrived 30 years too soon. Attempting to balance the conflicting needs of V8 luxury and rising fuel prices, Cadillac tried cylinder deactivation on its L62 eight-banger.
But the electronics werent up to the job, and owners made their own deactivation with wire cutters.
Built by The Adams Company in 1905, the Adams-Farwells innovations included a four-speed dual-clutch gearbox and steering on the left or right. The most head-scratching feature was a three-cylinder radial engine where the cylinders spun around a vertically fixed crank.
In a classic piece of Italian one-upmanship, little-known manufacturer Cizeta decided to out-gun former employers Lamborghini by fitting its Moroder with a V16: two V8s with a gearbox in the middle, transversely mounted.

Needing a diesel engine sufficiently short to fit under the drivers cab, Commer designed a three-cylinder engine with six – yes six – horizontally opposed pistons; thats two per cylinder, facing in opposite directions.
The TS3 had a single crankshaft, but needed two sets of rockers.
The engine of choice for tittering schoolboys everywhere, the Wankel has survived longer than most of the other examples here thanks to its smoothness and punch-per-litre.
But virtually everyone gave up on it except for Mazda, who are currently turning it into a range extender – possibly for the best.
Clearly BRM had a thing for the number 16 as its history contains two 16-cylinder engines. But the H-design is the one that comes closest to defying understanding.
Made up of two 1.5 V8s flattened and geared together, when it worked it delivered 600bhp. The key word being when.
The Deltic is an 18-cylinder, opposed-piston, two-stroke supercharged diesel, with three banks of six pistons in triangles. Understand? A version with the Deltic as a gas generator inside a gas turbine was tested but blew up past 5600bhp.
It never made it into a car.

The first post-war British GP at Silverstone saw the Maseratis of Luigi Villoresi and Alberto Ascari miss qualifying, perhaps because of traffic on the A43, yet scythe through the field inside two laps.
Villoresi won despite his tachometer being wedged under the clutch. He was that good. Ferraris first ever F1 victory came on account of superior fuel economy, not pace.
The works Alfa Romeos were getting 1.5mpg and had to stop twice to take on 70 gallons a time, and despite Juan Manuel Fangios brilliance it was fellow Argentinian Jose Froilan Gonzalez who won.
One of five outings at Aintree, the 1961 British GP was the last time a front-engined car competed in the class. It was also the last time Stirling Moss would compete in a British GP before retiring post-injury the following year.
Jackie Stewart was well on his way to his first championship, having won four of the five previous races.
Going head to head with Jochen Rindt for most of the 84 laps, Stewart eventually prevailed and lapped the entire field in the process.
In what became known as the race won by lawyers, a first-lap crash involving James Hunt meant he was off-track and banned from the restart. The crowds booed until he was reinstated.
Then Ferrari protested to the RAC and FIA, Niki Lauda eventually being given the win two months later.
In a pre-qualifying session more exciting than the race itself, David Purley made it into the record books after the throttle stuck open on his LEC.
Hitting a wall, he went from 108mph to zero in 66cm, experiencing 179.8g in the process – and survived.
Nigel Mansell found himself 29 seconds behind team-mate Nelson Piquet with 28 laps left, but on new tyres.
Breaking the lap record eight times, Mansell caught his rival and sold him a dummy to take the lead, running out of fuel two corners after the chequered flag.
With two F1 wins under his belt, ticket sales went ballistic for Lewis Hamiltons first home GP. The race summed up the year: Hamilton and Fernando Alonso duked it out with Kimi Räikkönen, who prevailed.
Lewis equalled Jim Clarks record with a ninth consecutive podium finish.
It was already a tricky relationship, but Mark Webber was extra displeased with team-mate Sebastian Vettel after Red Bull gave the German his new-spec front wing.
But Webber hung him out to dry into the first bend and won, quipping Not bad for a number two driver, eh? as he crossed the line.
Changeable conditions saw Hamilton sit in the pits at the end of Q3 watching himself get bumped down to sixth on his monitor.
Then Räikkönen decided to have a huge shunt on lap one that stopped the race for an hour while the barrier was repaired. Hamilton won by 30 seconds.
