U.S. State Department official describes recent defection case as window into North Korean life - Duration: 1:34.

The New York Times has published an op-ed by an official at the U.S. State Department,...

who described the recent defection case of a North Korean soldier to South Korea as a

window into life under the Kim Jong-un regime.

The article also slammed Pyongyang for letting even its most-trusted soldiers suffer from

terrible malnutrition.

Kim Hyo-sun reports.

A U.S. State Department official says the plight of the North Korean soldier who defected

to South Korea recently,... is a window into life in North Korea.

Brian Hook, director of policy planning and senior policy adviser at the State Department,

commented in an op-ed piece in the New York Times,... that the young soldier had hepatitis

B and an enormous number of parasitic worms in his intestines.

Describing the North as a slave state,...

Hook explained that even trusted soldiers suffer from terrible malnourishment as the

regime directs most of its money towards its nuclear and missile programs.

He added that the living conditions for the vast majority of other North Koreans are much

worse.

Meanwhile,... the South Korean military is broadcasting news of the defected soldier

towards North Korean servicemen.

According to officials,... they started broadcasting the news via the South Korean military's loudspeakers

set up along the border,... shortly after the defection on November 13th.

Such broadcasts are heavily criticized by North Korea,... claiming they may provoke

defections by its front-line soldiers.

42-days after proceedings were adjourned upon her lawyers' mass resignation.

The hearing got underway moments ago,... and as anticipated,... Park is not present.

Previously she has expressed a reluctance to appear,... citing health reasons.

bribery and abuse of power in a massive influence-peddling scandal that removed her from office in March.

And the court had extended her arrest warrant for another six months until April next year.

Park's legal counsel quit en masse in objection to the court decision saying she's being unfairly

treated,... and the court has since appointed five public defenders to continue the trial.

Colder morning, highs to be similar to colder _ 112717 - Duration: 2:00.

Good morning.

Much of the country had cold conditions this morning.

Temperatures dropped between 5 to 10 degrees Celsius... while cold wave alerts have been

issued in parts of Chungcheongnam-do and Jeollabukdo Provinces.

As for the highs, they will be similar to Sunday at 8 degrees Celsius in Seoul,... while

southern regions will see 13 degrees in Daegu and Gwangju.

Busan will be as mild as yesterday at 17 degrees.

Sunshine will dominate most regions.

There shouldn't be any major cold snap this week, but things will get colder as we head

towards the weekend.

With that, let's take a look at the international weather for viewers around the world.

While many regions in South Korea will see double digit afternoon highs under plenty

of sunshine, most of North Korea will have colder temperatures.

As for major cities in Asia,..

Beijing will be colder than Seoul,... while Tokyo will have a mild day with a high of

14 degrees.

Meanwhile, showers will sweep across Melbourne again on Monday... with the city's taste of

the tropics set to stay.

The heat will soon return.

Heading to North America, major cities in the U.S will see double digit afternoon highs

on Monday.

As for South America, Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro will see showers with thunderstorms.

Taking you to Europe,...major cities will be rainy.

Lastly to Africa, strong winds in Cape Town will ease overnight, and Monday will be unseasonably

warm, reaching 27.

That's all the weather update for now.

Data suggest N. Korea will conduct WMD tests in December: CSIS - Duration: 2:18.

Our starting point this morning,... the likelihood of another North Korean provocation.

It's been over two months since the Kim Jong-un regime fired any missiles or conducted a nuclear

test.

But data on Pyongyang shows the period of relative calm may not last long-- with North

Korea likely to try the international community's patience once again before the end of the

year.

Lee Jeong-yeon reports.

Speculation is rising about when the next provocation will come from North Korea.

The Center for Strategic and International Studies predicts that there is a greater chance

the regime do something involving a weapon of mass destruction within the next two- to

four-week window.

The think tank, based in Washington, says its big data analysis shows the likelihood

of a provocation in the next 30 days... on a rolling basis... has been breaking records

in the past couple of weeks.

Just last Tuesday it reached the highest level since the start of September.

And the likelihood of a provocation in the next 14 days has also been climbing every

day since November 15th.

This means that a ballistic missile test could be expected on or around the 17th of December,

the date of the previous leader Kim Jong-il's death.

This prediction comes amid a rather quiet two months from the regime despite new international

sanctions and joint military drills between South Korea and the U.S..

Two factors could be behind this.

The first are the technical limitations of tests in cold weather.

According to analysis, the North has only conducted three tests in the last two months

of the year... in the 5 years Kim Jong-un has held power.

In 2015, North Korea fired a submarine-launched ballistic missile once each in November and

December,... and in December 2012 it launched the Unha-3 ICBM.

Another reason could be that the regime conducts annual military exercises in December which

take up all its time and resources.

But historical trends aside, observers are watching the regime closely as the end of

the year approaches,... to see whether its behavior is affected either way by Washington's

pressure or the recent visit to Pyongyang by an envoy from China.

World leaders condemn Egypt mosque attack - Duration: 1:50.

Now for our look at stories making headlines around the world..... and we start with Egypt…

World leaders have condemned the deadly terrorist attack on a mosque in Sinai Peninsula on Friday

which killed at least 305 people.

With more on this and other stories we turn to our Ro Aram…

Aram… what reactions are we seeing?

Well Semin….

world leaders have come out to strongly denounce the worst attack in modern Egyptian history.

U.S. President Donald Trump offered his condolences to the people of Egypt, describing the attack

as "heinous."

He said there can be no tolerance for barbaric groups that claim to act in the name of a

faith but attack houses of worship and murder innocent people.

Russian President Vladimir Putin echoed the sentiment, also saying that the murder of

civilians in worship is striking with its cruelty and cynicism.

He added that Moscow is ready to further enhance cooperation with Egypt in fighting international

terrorism.

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday sent a message to his Egyptian counterpart Abdel

Fattah al-Sisi offering his deep condolences.

Pope Francis on Sunday invited those gathered in St. Peter's Square to pray for the victims.

EU leaders have also issued a statement condemning the attack.

They are particularly on high alert as the Islamic State Group released a sick propaganda

poster with a hooded figure looming over Santa Claus, with London's Regent Street in the

background.

The caption 'Soon on your holidays' is also written in French and German, sparking fears

that the poster is a call to action for IS followers to carry out attacks in Europe.

Damage estimates from Pohang earthquake on the rise as gov't scrambles to provide aid - Duration: 1:57.

Damages from the magnitude five-point-four earthquake,... which struck Korea's southeastern

city of Pohang earlier this month,... is now being estimated at nearly 90 million U.S.

dollars.

Although a sense of normalcy has returned to the city,... the government is still facing

a challenge in providing permanent shelter... for the hundreds of residents who have been

left homeless.

Our Yu Joonhee reports.

According to the latest damage assessment of the Pohang earthquake,... nearly 30-thousand

cases of property damage have been reported by local residents,... amounting to roughly

39 million U.S. dollars.

An additional 49 million dollars worth of losses were incurred to public infrastructure,...

such as schools and port facilities.

While damaged buildings can be repaired,... finding adequate shelter to relocate the more

than one-thousand residents who have been left homeless... is the most urgent task being

faced by the government.

The redevelopment of aging apartment complexes that have been slated for demolition,... could

provide the permanent shelter they desperately need.

(Korean) "We have asked the central government to ease

regulations so we can quickly move forward with the plan in cooperation with local residents."

The government has set aside... an additional 3-point-7 million dollars worth of special

grants,... on top of an identical amount that was previously allocated last week... for

emergency disaster relief.

Various fiscal and financial aid measures,... such as tax waivers and deadline extensions...

are being offered to help residents get back on their feet.

For owners of damaged or destroyed boats, automobiles and machinery,... transfer tax

exemptions will be provided... on the purchase of new replacements.

As of Sunday,... the government says more than 93 percent of all the damage has been

cleaned up.

Despite this figure,... the city... and especially its now homeless residents,... are still facing

a long, up-hill battle to fully recover... from this unprecedented disaster.

cancel flights and move about 24,000 residents out of the way.

Mount Agung emitted a thick plume of smoke reaching thousands of meters over the weekend

covering roads, cars and buildings in ash.

Indonesia has upgraded its Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation to red, its highest warning,

over concerns of what officials call a looming explosive eruption.

Record number of background check requests for guns on Black Friday - Duration: 0:42.

The FBI says it received more than 200-thousand background check requests for gun purchases

on Black Friday, setting a new record.

The latest figure easily outpaces those set in the previous two Black Fridays when they

both stood at just below 186-thousand.

The number of firearms sold is likely to be higher because a single background request

can cover the sale of multiple weapons in a single transaction.

The new record comes several weeks after a Texas church shooting left 26 dead.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions last week ordered a review of the federal background check system

in response to the Texas shooting.

Sweet Urban Beekeeping - Duration: 5:30.

This city looks like a concrete jungle with more buildings than green.

However, much-anticipated guests are returning to the city.

Urban beekeepers bring the bees back to the city.

Let's find out about their sweet story

This small park in the heart of the concrete jungle offers a quiet retreat from city life.

A group of people came to the park early in the morning on a weekday.

At first glance, it seemed like they came here for a walk, but now they are putting

on protective clothing.

They are here to learn how to keep bees in the city.

Run by a borough office in Seoul, this beekeeping class has had some 400 students since its

establishment in 2014.

The class runs twice a year, once in the first half and again in the second half of the year,

and it is always full.

(Korean) "I have always been concerned about food safety

and was unhappy about the watery honey that I recently purchased.

Therefore, I took part in this class to learn more about honey."

Some of them want to make their own honey while others hope to take up beekeeping professionally

in the near future.

Although they are all here for varying reasons, they all have a shared passion.

(Korean) "The importance of honeybees in our lives

made me think that urban beekeeping deserves more attention."

Each class runs for 6 months, and the students get to harvest honey as well.

The class produces an average of 500kg of honey every year, boosting the local economy.

(Korean) "This bee farm is used as a medium to increase

the bee population, preserve the ecosystem and offer practical training for students."

Due to the rapid urbanization and industrialization that took place in the city, flowers, trees,

and forestland were decimated, pushing honeybees to the brink of extinction.

The problem is all sorts of fruit and vegetables are pollinated by honeybees, therefore, the

extinction of bees could mean the end of humanity.

With a clear purpose, this urban beekeeping class was initiated as part of the environmental

preservation campaign that began in Europe in 2000.

(Korean) "We hope to prove that cities can also be

home to wild bees and that we can make cities more ecologically friendly with bees.

That's one of the factors that distinguishes urban beekeeping from traditional beekeeping."

Haebangchon is one of the oldest neighborhoods in central Seoul with some urban beekeepers

on the rooftop.

Among them are Yoo Ah-reum and Lee Jong-cheol.

The two have been beekeeping in this area for 4 years.

They check their hives once a week, something they anticipate.

(Korean) "We have to check the bees on a regular basis

to prevent any damage from harmful insects and maintain the ideal environment for them

to breed.

It's one of the most important factors in beekeeping."

Now they know how comfortable or uncomfortable their bees are just by the buzzing, but things

were very difficult in the beginning.

(Korean) "We have faced many unexpected challenges

since we started this bee farm.

For example, bees died all of a sudden, and the weather was unfavorable for beekeeping

at times, too."

In particular, the public's general fear of bees is an ongoing challenge.

But that fear is derived from a general misunderstanding of honeybees.

As opposed to predatory wasps, honeybees rarely attack unless they are in danger.

In an effort to break down that preconception, the two started collective beekeeping with

their neighbors this year in which they had to build another bee farm in the neighborhood

and provide adequate instruction.

(Korean) "People are generally scared of bees, but

they are beginning to understand the importance of bees to our environment.

Now that we can organize many events related to bees here in the city, public perception

toward bees is changing."

This neighborhood is located at the foot of Namsan Mountain where wildflowers are everywhere.

However, since the habitat is located in a residential area, the urban beekeepers sowed

some honey plants for the bees.

(Korean) "We try to plant flowers or trees whenever

we can.

Bees will benefit from those plants, and so will humans emotionally from watching flowers

bloom and plants bear fruit."

Creating a good environment for bees is the first and most important step to creating

a good environment for humans.

What needs to be done for these urban beekeepers to revive the urban ecological system?

(Korean) "I hope to build more bee farms in places

like schools so that we can keep bees close to the public, especially children."

Urban beekeeping protects both the city-environment and bees.

All eyes are focused on this sweet strategy to preserve the city as well as its potential.

Researchers find gene responsible for autism - Duration: 1:22.

Korean researchers have, for the first time, found that the gene responsible for Down syndrome

is linked to autism.

This study is expected to pave the way for the development of medicines and contribute

to autism research.

Park Se-young reports.

The rate of autism in Korean children aged seven to twelve is two-point-six percent,…

or one in every 38 children.

This is already more than twice the figure in the U.S. and Europe,… and the number

is only expected to rise.

It's long been known that genetic mutations and environmental influences both play a role

in the development of autism.

Now, researchers have found that one of the genes that cause symptoms in Down syndrome

also induces autism.

It's the gene involved in neuro-genesis, brain size, cognition and degenerative brain diseases.

Zebrafish were used to research the gene.

(Korean) "Autistic people find social interaction challenging

and become isolated.

We observed how this change occurs using the zebrafish model."

The zebrafish model is expected to contribute to the search for candidate genes for autism

and the development of new medicines.

The study was published in the journal Molecular Autism.
