[♪ INTRO]

When you look up on a clear night,

virtually all of the stars you can see are part of the Milky Way.

Even the farthest one you can find without a telescope is less than 20,000 light-years from you.

That might seem really far away, and yeah it is, but space is way bigger than our little neighborhood.

It's so huge that it's hard to study the billions of stars outside the Milky Way.

In fact, the farthest star we've isolated is in a galaxy only 55 million light-years away.

At least, that's what used to be true.

According to a paper published this week in Nature Astronomy,

that record was blown out of the water.

Now, the most distant single star we've ever seen is 14 billion light-years from us!

Yeah, billion. With a B.

In general, it's not that uncommon for astronomers to observe faraway objects.

For example, with telescopes, they can see the brightest supernovas

up to 10 billion light-years away.

But individual stars are normally impossible to make out even a hundred times closer than that.

Unless they're gravitationally lensed.

This is what happens when a large amount of mass, like a galaxy, or an entire cluster

of galaxies, bends, distorts, and magnifies the light from objects behind them.

It's a phenomenon that happens because objects with a lot of mass

actually distort the space around them.

On average, galaxies experiencing gravitational lensing

get magnified about 50 times their 'normal' brightness.

But this new star, which was found behind a galaxy cluster

around six billion light-years away from here, got magnified 2000 times!

That star's name is officially MACS J1149 Lensed Star 1.

But the team that found it unofficially calls it Icarus.

Thank you, astronomers!

Scientists first found Icarus almost by accident, when they were studying images

of a supernova the Hubble Space Telescope took in 2016 and '17.

While studying the pictures, they noticed a second bright spot not too far away.

It was also varying in brightness over time, but not the way that supernovas do.

Specifically, the colors of light coming from it didn't change over the months of observation.

Further analysis of those colors revealed the object was a blue supergiant.

These are stars much larger, more massive,

hotter, and up to hundreds of thousands of times brighter than our Sun.

You know, just in case you needed another reminder that space is pretty hardcore.

All blue supergiants have similar profiles, so by comparing Icarus's light against stars in our galaxy,

the astronomers were able to calculate its distance.

They found that the light it's emitting is 9 billion years old,

and because the universe is expanding, that puts it about 14 billion light-years from us.

But how did Icarus manage to be magnified 2000 times,

when the regular amount from gravitational lensing is a measly 50?

The answer is microlenses, small objects within the larger lens,

like individual stars, that provide their own additional magnification.

Lenses within lenses.

That boost is only temporary,

because the microlenses will constantly be moving into and out of alignment.

But if the timing's right, the effect is massive.

Microlensing has even been used to find exoplanets outside the Milky Way!

Icarus isn't just a star for the record books, either.

By studying the pattern by which it gets magnified over time,

astronomers will be able to model exactly how matter is distributed in the lensing galaxy.

That includes its mysterious dark matter, which we can't see

but which has gravitational effects on other bodies.

So besides smashing records, Icarus probably has a lot more to teach us.

In other news announced this week, the Milky Way might be… getting bigger.

At least that's what astronomers presented this week at the

European Week of Astronomy and Space Science in Liverpool.

Our galaxy has been around for a while,

and it's grown as new stars formed over millions and billions of years.

Previous work has shown that stars of different ages now exist in different parts of the galaxy.

For example, in the central bulge and galactic halo, there are lots of older stars,

because there isn't much raw material left there to make newer ones.

Meanwhile, in the outer edge of our galaxy's disk,

studies have identified star-forming regions where baby stars form all the time.

And general models for galactic evolution suggest that the new stars in these regions

will slowly cause the galaxy to grow.

If you think about, it makes sense.

It's like a city growing because people keep

building new neighborhoods on the outskirts of town.

Still, it's hard to actually study this happening in the Milky Way, 'cause

we're kinda stuck inside of it.

To get around that, a team of astronomers studied two other galaxies

that might have similar spiral structures to ours.

If these galaxies seem to be getting bigger from star formation at their outer edge,

then it's not unreasonable to infer that the Milky Way is, too.

By collecting optical, ultraviolet, and infrared data of young, blue stars in these galaxies'

outer disks, scientists were able to calculate their vertical movement,

how much they were moving up and down compared to the disk.

Then, they could convert that into a galactic growth rate.

These stars appeared to have velocities of about 500 meters per second,

so the Milky Way could be growing at that same rate.

That seems pretty fast, but it's really not too speedy on a galactic scale.

In about 3 billion years, it means our neighborhood would only have grown by 5%.

Then again, that growth rate might be completely messed up by then,

because our galaxy will collide with Andromeda in about 4 billion years.

But hey, no matter what happens, studying how galaxies grow

still helps us better understand the universe.

Because even though the Milky Way is our home,

there's a whole lot we don't totally understand about our corner of space.

But that doesn't mean that there's not a ton to celebrate about our corner of space!

Winter Melon Pastry

Cut the winter melon into small pieces

put into a blender, blend until it is smooth

Heat a non-stick pan , add in the winter melon paste

Add in the ingredients shown on the screen

Cook over medium heat until the melon paste thickens

now you can see it is no longer out of water as shown

add some vanilla extract and roasted white sesame if you like

Mix well and add in the glutinous rice flour

Keep stirring until the mixture becomes clear and paste like

Transfer to a plate

Put it in fridge for 1 hour and let it cool completely

Let's make the water oil pastry dough

we want to keep this dough very soft, so it's easier to work with later on

let it sit for 15 minutes

You won't have to worry about this dough sticking to your hands since there is some oil in the pastry dough

You can wipe some oil on your hands if the dough is still sticky

Knead the dough smooth with your palms as shown

Now we will make the oil pastry.

mix the flour and lard together

into a dough ball.

divide the oil pastry dough into 8 portions

roll them into a small ball

divide the water oil pastry dough into 8 portions

then knead each small water oil pastry dough again until it's smooth on the surface

make a circle. then wrap around a ball of the oil pastry like a pocket

close the top of the pocket tightly. this is why we need the water oil pastry dough to be as soft as possible.

all the pastry doughs wrapped .

remove the winter melon filling form the refrigerator and divide into 8 parts

roll them into the small ball and just dusting your hand with loose glutinous rice flour if it sticking

follow the instructions as shown in the video and form each dough into a round circle

About 11-12 cm in diameter

Add in the filling

a trick to wrapping these is to make the circles slightly bigger.

when you wrap them make sure you've tugged up every fold and closed the pocket tightly,

Now place the pocket opening side down and gently press with a rolling pin to allow the filling to distribute evenly.

Brush some egg yolk

stay in, but it is what some people believe is necessary evil.

I use drains on all of my tummy tucks regardless, there are some plastic surgeons however who

do not use them, but I think it's the necessary part of the procedure in order to maximize

results of the procedure.

If You Want Your Welfare Handout You're Now Going To Have To Make Major Sacrifice

To Keep It!

America has a huge problem with people not wanting to work.

There are so many able-bodied people refusing to work while they abuse the American welfare

system for handouts.

There are so many people searching for jobs who can't find one.

There are people who work multiple jobs just to make ends meet.

The worst people of all are those who simply refuse to work and they allow their entitlement

to carry them through life on the back of the tax paying citizens who work hard their

entire life.

There are so many people abusing the system that finally one state has decided to act

on it and place heavy requirements on the leeches of society.

This governor is forcing people to be active and productive citizens in their state and

the results will be astounding once this kicks in.

Some people are going to have a huge problem with a bill that just passed in West Virginia,

but those people are most likely the ones who abuse the system.

It was Governor Jim Justice who signed the new bill that will have a hopefully positive

impact on the state and locality where it's being implemented.

This will affect food stamp recipients starting in October and it will require people to work

or volunteer in order to continue receiving their welfare based handouts.

It's a positive move that will hopefully encourage more people to begin working and

contribute to society.

WV Gazette reported more details on the bill: "Gov. Jim Justice signed a bill into law

Tuesday that will impose work requirements on certain adults receiving benefits through

the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

Justice did not issue a release or convene any news conference to break the news, though

the Legislature's website quietly noted the change.

Butch Antolini, communications director for Justice, could not immediately be reached

for comment.

Starting Oct. 1, 2018, any able-bodied adult — a person between 18 and 49 years of age

without dependents — must either work, volunteer or participate in workforce training programs

for 20 hours per week to receive SNAP benefits.

Specifically, the bill rescinds West Virginia's ability to allow the Department of Health

and Human Resources to issue waivers to SNAP recipients from the federal work requirements

for able-bodied working adults.

However, people in counties with a 12-month average unemployment rate above 10 percent,

a 24-month average unemployment rate 20 percent above the national average for the same period,

or a "labor surplus area" as designated by the U.S. Department of Labor, can receive

the waivers until October 2022.

At that point, barring a change in state law, no able-bodied working adults in the state

can receive waivers from the work requirement.

Those who do not receive a waiver and do not meet the work requirements can receive SNAP

benefits for up to three months every three years.

The bill also requires DHHR to report the employment impact of the work requirements,

SNAP caseload and other figures to the Legislature on a county-by-county basis.

Nine counties in the state have undergone a pilot program of SNAP work requirements.

According to DHHR's analysis of the pilot program, it did not have a significant impact

on employment figures for the population of able-bodied adults without dependents, although

it did slash the SNAP caseload."

The bill to get people working and volunteering to keep their benefits will hopefully be successful

and carry over to other states.

President Trump has already seen a major decrease in the number of people receiving benefits

during his first year in the White House.

This is likely due to the number of job increases and a stimulated economy.

Trump has seen numerous wins for which helped boom America's job count and lower the unemployment

levels.

People who need help are often granted help, but the major problem is when people who don't

need help try to essentially steal the helping hands from the taxpayers.

Too many people have been caught in fraudulent activity involving theft of welfare benefits.

One of the major crimes that involve the theft is when people trade a lower amount of cash

for a higher amount of food stamps.

This is a problem in some smaller independent deli stores where the owner allows people

to buy "generic" items, or items not legally allowed to and charges them double the number

of food stamps.

President Trump has a goal to get people working and it seems like his message is traveling

to others.

We need to work and we need to work hard.

We help those who need it and we work when we're able to.

The days of easy money sitting on the couch are over and stealing from the hard working

American taxpayers is just about over

Brexit and the Irish Border Problem - Duration: 10:32.

"I pledged the word of Great Britain that should the United States become involved in

the war with Japan, a British declaration would follow within the hour."

After learning of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill

rushed to fulfill his promise to declare war (a,424).

But his promise was quickly superseded by news that 25,000 Japanese had landed north

of Hong Kong- his stretched colonial forces were now engaged in the Pacific theater.

Curiously, between learning of Pearl Harbor and the attack at Hong Kong- in this culmanitive

moment after years of courting the USA towards engagement in World War 2, Churchill decided

to telegraph none other than the Irish Prime Minister Éamon de Valera (b,c).

"Now or never," Churchill wrote.

"'A nation once again.'"

Churchill was making an offer to the de facto independent and neutral Irish state.

Join the war effort against the axis powers.

We'll make divided Ireland whole.

The message contained something potentially compelling: for de Valera.

He had opposed the 1921 Anglo-Irish Treaty which allowed for the North to remain aligned

to Great Britain while the rest formed an independent state (d,223).

But the price of potentially reuniting Ireland: the use of Irish ports for the war effort

(a).

And de Valera's answer was...no answer.

He never wrote Churchill back.

Ireland had been neutral; it remained neutral.

Despite this, it's estimated around 43,000 Irish citizens served with the British military

in World War 2 (e).

As far as any government was concerned, no conscription, and no participation in things

like the Royal Observer Corps, tasked with spotting German air raids over the night sky.

Such was the fragility of the relationship between Westminster, Belfast, and Dublin.

Over a decade after the end of the war, as the threat of Nazi invasion of the British

Isles converted to fear of a Soviet nuclear strike at the height of the cold war, things

were different, at least for Northern Ireland.

The United Kingdom's Royal Observer Corps had changed its mission from German plane

detection to nuclear strike detection.

They had instruments not only identify to a nuclear strike, but to estimate its fallout

and strength.

The ROC had 31 so-called "operation rooms" spread across the UK, prepared to alert the

nation within minutes should a nuclear strike occur (1).

And ROC group 31 of 31 was located under Thiepval Barracks in the town of Lisburn, Northern

Ireland (2,3,4).

Today, if you visit the Barracks in Lisburn, you'll find a plaque commemorating that

time.

It reads: "To monitor the nuclear threat during the cold war...forewarned is forearmed".

Leaving Lisburn and Northern Ireland on the A3, heading towards Carrick-On-Shannon in

the Republic of Ireland, you'll encounter a peculiarity.

About a third of the way, you'll cross the border between Northern Ireland (part of the

United Kingdom) and the Republic of Ireland.

So far so good.

But not long after you cross the border, you'll cross again, back in N. Ireland and the UK.

2 miles later, another international border, back in Republic of Ireland.

2 miles later- again, Northern Ireland.

Once more for good measure, you're finally in Republic of Ireland for good.

In all, you've crossed an international border 5 times, four of which happened in

the space of 6 miles.

That's no problem today, as both Northern Ireland as part of the UK and the Republic

of Ireland are in the European Union, and all 28 member states enjoy freedom of movement

within, which means no border checkpoints.

If you actually drove the route you probably wouldn't even notice the international crossings,

as the only real difference is the occasional sign indicating the speed limit changing from

miles per hour in Northern Ireland to kilometers per hour in the Republic of Ireland.

But that simplicity is threatened as the United Kingdom transitions out of the EU.

The stability of Ireland depends on how the UK and EU negotiate a future trading relationship.

Let's go deeper with this topic.

When the UK voted to leave the European Union in June of 2016, for better or worse, they

also signed on to a whole lot of complication: divorce bill, EU migration, common fisheries

policy, financial services, the overall trading relationship…

But perhaps none with larger historical complication as that of Northern Ireland and the Republic

of Ireland.

Northern Ireland has been officially partitioned from the rest of the island since a series

of acts and treaties made it so in the early 1920's.

1968-1998 were 30 years of intense violence in the North, mainly between those who wanted

to be part of the UK, and those who wanted a united Ireland.

Through the Good Friday Agreement of 1998, Northern Ireland's status as a country within

the United Kingdom was mostly settled- "The two Prime Ministers emerged just before

six this evening to inaugurate what the historic agreement they hope will usher in a new era

for the island" and the Republic of Ireland amended its constitution

to take out any right to reclaim the North.

And for 20 years that agreement has held, in part because the movement of people, goods,

and services are seamless over the border.

As part of the EU Single Market and Customs Union, any Irish national can go to Northern

Ireland, and any Teddy Bear assembled in Northern Ireland can be imported and sold in the Republic

of Ireland.

But if the UK leaves the Single Market and Customs Union, UK product regulations might

shift; different regulatory standards mean the need for border checks.

Products might also be subject to customs duties or tariffs, meaning a need for border

checks.

The freedom of movement of people might also end, meaning a need for immigration border

checks.

In short, leaving the EU creates a significant challenge for Northern Ireland, which unlike

the mainland, shares a land border with an EU nation.

Here's the implication: after Brexit, the open border might be repartitioned with barriers

and checks, back to the day when travel between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland

meant disruptions, smugglers, and violence.

And though Ireland seemed to take a back seat to other issues during the referendum campaign,

it's not as though politicians didn't realize this might be a problem (5).

Phase one of the negotiations last year included a dialogue on the Ireland/Northern Ireland

border led by the chief negotiators themselves (6).

In her Mansion House Speech earlier this year, Theresa May made two things clear.

One, that the UK is leaving the single market: "We are leaving the single market.

Life is going to be different.

In certain ways, our access to each other's markets will be less than it is now."

And two, just a few sentences prior: "As prime minister of the whole United Kingdom,

I am not going to let our departure from the European Union do anything to set back the

historic progress that we have made in Northern Ireland - nor will I allow anything that would

damage the integrity of our precious Union."

"We also want as frictionless a border as possible between us and the EU - so that we

don't damage the integrated supply chains our industries depend on and don't have a

hard border between Northern Ireland and Ireland."

This begs the question: how?

How could borders be enforced, tariffs applied, immigration papers checked- all without a

hard border?

Labour opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn has suggested a "permanent customs union"

after Brexit to avoid a hard border in Ireland (8).

"No one should be willing to sacrifice the Good Friday Agreement...So Labour would seek

to negotiate a new comprehensive UK-EU customs union to ensure there are no tariffs with

Europe, and to help avoid any need whatsoever for a hard border in Northern Ireland."

And in February of 2018, the EU released a "draft Withdrawal Agreement, offering a

backup plan that if nothing else was agreed, Northern Ireland would remain a part of the

EU customs union, separate from the rest of the UK (9).

But Prime Minister Theresa May has rejected both these options: the permanent customs

union on grounds it doesn't realign the UK away from Europe sufficiently; the second

being that if Northern Ireland stays in the single market and customs union it's effectively

cut it off from the rest of the United Kingdom.

And unfortunately an UK-EU Brexit transition agreement in March failed to find an agreeable

solution to this problem (10).

The UK is kind of stuck.

On the one hand, they could stay aligned with the EU, maintain an open border, but then

lose the exit part of brexit.

On the other hand, they could realign away from the Europe, but potentially cut off Northern

Ireland in the process.

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson acknowledged as much in a leaked letter to the Prime Minister.

Reading from the article: "...he tried to play down the 'exaggerated

impression' of 'how important checks are' at EU external borders," while also admitting

that border issue was one of the most important challenges to the whole process (11).

Third way solutions have been offered, but not substantiated.

Some have offered that countries like Switzerland enjoy free trade arrangements with the EU,

but the Swiss accept free movement of people, unacceptable to most Brexiteers (12).

Even an arrangement like that between Canada and the EU would require border checks to

ensure that third-party countries goods weren't given preferential treatment (13,14).

Brexit Secretary and chief negotiator David Davis asserted that technology might be able

to solve the issues through a so-called 'smart border', but critics argue that technology

simply can't achieve a perfectly frictionless Irish border (15).

Adding to the practical complications is a political one (16).

Theresa May gambled on a general election in 2017 and actually lost her governing majority

in Parliament.

9 seats short, she was forced to form a minority government with the help of none other than

10 members of the Northern Irish Democratic Unionist Party, supportive of Brexit, but

opposed to a Brexit arrangement with a hard Irish border, and opposed to a Brexit arrangement

with Northern Ireland partitioned off from the rest of the UK (17, 18, 19).

In fact, they saw the backstop option to maintain regulatory alignment on the island as an assault

on UK sovereignty.

On any close Brexit vote in Parliament, it is exactly these 10 members on which a majority

will hinge.

The Irish border of today, cutting through homes, businesses, roadways, and ocean boundaries

We are here at Oneka Elementary, and we just

finished our Orchestra Concert.

We played a couple songs in the dark,

like "Mary Had a Little Lamb" and "We Will Rock You,"

and it was really fun performing in front

of the whole entire school.

And I enjoy the orchestra.

Today, we are at Otter Lake and making our butterfly project

using pipe cleaners, popsicle sticks and tape.

We're testing it by seeing if its wings will

move automatically by wind, and seeing how long it will stand.

Today, we're here at Central Middle School

and we're working on the pop art project of our choice, which

could be the plaster casters, Warhol printers,

or Lichtenstein dotters.

This project was fun because we could choose the project that

interested us the most.

Today, we're here at Hamline University

with our freshmen and sophomore students

from North Campus.

The students are getting the opportunity

to tour the classes to get a glimpse of what college life is

like in the future.

Mary Fallin (R) is facing criticism after she likened teachers who are demanding raises and improved education funding to a teenager asking for a new car.

"Teachers want more," Fallin told CBS News on Tuesday as thousands of striking educators descended upon the state Capitol in Oklahoma City.

Tens of thousands of educators across Oklahoma have been on strike since Monday.

They're seeking a $200 million bump in education funding, a $10,000 raise over three years for teachers and a $5,000 raise for support staff.

The governor signed a bill last week raising teacher salaries by only $6,100 on average and restoring education funding by $50 million.

On Tuesday, Fallin signed a measure giving support staff a $1,250 raise.  The Oklahoma Education Association, the union coordinating the strike, said the new legislation is simply not adequate.

"Tens of thousands of educators, parents and community members are showing up at the capitol every day because they are overwhelmed by classrooms with more students than desks, duct-taped textbooks, and schools that are only heated to 60 degrees," said Alicia Priest, the union's president, in a statement.

"This legislation falls well short of fixing those problems.

These measures leave millions in revenue on the table and still leave Oklahoma students among the worst-funded in the nation." Oklahoma teachers are also among the lowest paid in the country.

Tensions between the state's educators and lawmakers have been running high since the walkout began.  After the Republican-controlled state House of Representatives failed to move legislation on Monday, the Oklahoma Education Association said that "disrespect from lawmakers" was fueling teachers' "anger and frustration." Fallin has also provoked the wrath of educators and their supporters.

Besides her comparison of teachers to teens, she suggested in the same CBS interview that "antifa," or anti-fascist militant groups on the left, had joined the protests at the Capitol.  Talked w/Ok Gov Mary Fallin about #oklahomateachersstrike.

She mentioned "outside" groups w/teachers at Capitol.

Kevin McDugle (R-Broken Arrow) has also faced backlash this week for saying in a Facebook video, since deleted, that he would not vote "for another stinking measure when [teachers] are acting the way they are acting." Cyndi Ralston, a 30-year teacher, announced on Tuesday that she would run for McDugle's seat as a Democrat.

"For years, my profession has been under siege by our legislature.

Budget cut after budget cut have forced us to do ever more with ever less, and it cannot continue on this path," Ralston said in a statement.

"When my colleagues and I have visited our Republican representatives and senators, we have been brushed off, if not outright lied to.

Republican members of the legislature have made it crystal clear that they do not believe they work for us, that our concerns do not matter." The Oklahoma walkout follows a teacher strike in West Virginia, which resulted in a 5 percent pay raise for educators there. Arizona teachers are planning a statewide strike as well.

On Friday and Monday, educators in Kentucky walked out to protest proposed changes to their pension plans.

Dozens of teachers in that state are now seeking public office.

They've had enough, they say, of lawmakers' failure to stand up for them.

Rapid Fire BOOK TAG [CC] - Duration: 9:19.

Hello everybody, it's Anna, and welcome back to my booktube channel! I am

filming in a slightly different location today, with the board games behind me,

because my front room is currently super hot and super sunny, and if I was trying

to film in there, I would be blinded by the sun coming in through the windows.

So yeah, today I am going to be bringing you the rapid fire book tag, which I most

recently watched on Sloan's channel, and that reminded me that this was a tag

that I wanted to do. And also things have just been really chaotic lately, so I

wanted to film something that would be quick and easy and something I could

get done in a not-too-long amount of time. So without further ado, here we go with

the questions! Ebook or physical book? Physical book.

It's what I feel more comfortable reading. I'll read e-books out of

convenience or if that's the only way that I'm actually able to get the book

affordably, but I will take the physical book almost nine times out of ten.

Paperback or hardback? um... god, this one is so hard to decide! Because like hardcover

does look really good, and they have the dust jacket and everything, but they

already take up a lot of space, and then I get more worried about dinging them up.

So maybe paperback, because I feel like I'm less stressed about trying to make

them work. Next is online or in-store book shopping? In store 100%. I did a lot

more online book shopping when I lived in a place that didn't really have good

bookstores, but I will always prefer to shop for books in the store because I

believe in supporting local booksellers and that experience that they provide

is just irreplaceable. Trilogies or series? um-hmm? Again, this is

another one that's kind of hard to answer because I think so much of it

depends on whether it's well done. For a while there like in the 2012- 2015- ish era,

we had so many books series that were just coming out as trilogies,

these like young adult trilogies. I think I'd have to say

series. Sometimes I think the trilogy gets a

little shoehorned and formulaic, but then again people can write series poorly -

so, hmm... Heroes or villains? Villains 100%. Villains allow you to tell stories

that just heroes don't, so I think I will always prefer that. A book you want

everyone to read? I want everybody to read "Mr. Penumbra's 24-hour Bookstore" by

Robin Sloan. That is my favorite contemporary novel of all time. It is a

great book about people that love books and mysteries and fun things that happen

when you combine books with technology. Recommend an underrated book? hmm...

I guess I'll go with a book that I read in graduate school. It's called "The Princess

de Cleves," and it is a French novel from, I believe the 1400's or 1500's,

and it is basically like a "Pride and Prejudice"-esque

story before its time. I really enjoyed reading that book, and it was a

lot better than I expected, so it was definitely one of those surprise

gems that that I really enjoyed. Okay, the last book you finished? Let's look at

Goodreads... it was "Monstress, Volume one," which is a graphic novel, and I gave it 5

stars. I really liked that. I actually went straight into reading the second

book because of how much I liked it. Ok, the last book you bought? hmm, I think I

have it with me-- be right back. "Lumberjanes Bonus Tracks," which is a

collection of all of the singly released Lumberjanes comics that have finally

been gathered together into one volume, and I had every intention of reading

this this weekend, but still haven't gotten to it, and for that I am very sad.

I just... my life has been crazy busy lately. I started a new job, and I have

had like zero time to read or film or anything like that.

So that's sad! Let's see, weirdest thing you've used as a bookmark?

I want to say there have been times that I've done something like put a bowl

of soup or a bowl of ice cream in between the pages of a book, but honestly

that would have been a long time ago when I was like a kid so, [noncommittal noise]

Used books, yes or no? Absolutely yes! I really love buying used. Where I was

living previously, there was only one really good used book store, but we had

this incredible friends of the library sale every year that I really enjoyed,

and I would always go and spend like 50 or 60 bucks, but get 50 or 60 new books.

And I really enjoy used books. I enjoy the fact that they've had a life before me; I

enjoy the kind of surprises that you can find inside of them. Yeah, used books are a

ton of fun. Top three favorite genres? science fiction / fantasy, historical

fiction, and I guess adult literary fiction. Borrow or buy? I think I

prefer to buy my books, although I do borrow a lot of them as

well, but I guess if there's a book that I really like that I don't have, I will

always prefer to buy it and just have it for myself rather than borrow it and

read it again. Characters or plot? Uh, I guess I'll just answer this with a non

answer that if you can't write either of them, well, why am I even reading your

book? Long or short books? I really like long books. I like books that I can feel

like I'm really sinking my teeth into, and I'm getting a lot out of the story.

Yeah, long books it is. Long or short chapters? Short chapters, because I do a

lot of reading when I'm like on my lunch break at work, or right before bed, or

something like, that and then it's really hard if your chapter is like 20 pages

long to be able to put the book down and be like, okay, it's time to go to sleep! in

the middle of a chapter feeling like you have no resolution. So short chapters,

long books. Name the first three books that you think of: "the catcher

the rye"-- don't even know why because I haven't read it. "the merry spinster," which

is something that I'm currently reading. And "a court of wings and ruin" because

people talk about that a lot on YouTube, and I will never read it, but I that's

what I thought of. Books that make you laugh or cry? Um, laugh. I think I cry a

lot more at things like movies and TV shows, where there's the visual

medium, but I really prefer to read things that make me laugh. Audiobooks, yes or no?

Yes audiobooks! I used to listen to a lot more audiobooks when I was in high

school because I had a really long commute to my school everyday, but yeah,

even though I haven't listened to them as much as I used to, I really still do

enjoyed them, and I like audiobooks a lot. Do you ever judge a book by its cover?

Yes, I do. Sometimes I will buy a book just because the cover looks pretty or

looks cool. I've been burned by that before, but when you've read often enough,

we all kind of have to judge some books by their covers, really, because

otherwise we would never like be able to pick out what we actually want to read

at any given time! I would hate a world in which everything was just that

terrible card stock proof copy cover. That would make me very upset.

Book-to-movie or book to TV adaptations? I guess I'm gonna say book to TV, because I

tend to like book to TV adaptations more than I like book to single movie

adaptations. Just because TV lends itself well to spending more time with the

story and being able to build up to... build up bigger arcs, I suppose.

A mvieor TV show you preferred to its book? I definitely... okay, I definitely preferred

the Lord of the Rings movies to the Lord of the Rings books. Having gone back and

reread the Fellowship of the Ring this year, I'm sorry, but that book just-

it's such a drag! It goes on for so long. It's super tedious for the first half,

nothing really happens... the movie just kind of does away with all of that

and makes it very quick and snappy and yeah, I prefer the movie.

Series or stand-alones? Ugh, this is another really hard question to answer

because it really depends, but I think I'd have to go with series, just like as

a holdover from my childhood. I really loved getting a good series that I can

sink my teeth into. So that is going to be it for the rapid fire book tag. I will
