Carol Channing carried dried chicken in her purse to eat - News Live - Duration: 1:38.
Carol Channing's former publicist told us the late Broadway icon had a unique way of staying slim.
"We'd eat out a lot and mostly at the Russian Tea Room — but Carol never ate a bite off the menu," Scott Gorenstein recalled. "When I would go to pick her up I'd find her pulling apart pieces of chicken, which she'd then carry with her in a fancy silver container."
He explains, "Carol was convinced she had certain allergies which prevented her from eating much other than the dried chicken she'd carry with her wherever she went."
We're told the swanky spot didn't care that she brought her own food.
"They would hand me a menu, but only bring Carol a plate [onto] which she would dump her silver tray."
Meanwhile, "Lend Me a Tenor" playwright Ken Ludwig recalls once having Channing over to discuss a project when, "Our 4-year-old daughter accidentally pulled her wig off . . . After we had all stopped breathing for 10 seconds, we all laughed and laughed — including Carol. She was a great, great shining star."
He added: "I adored Carol and will miss her greatly. She and her husband at [one] time hired me to write a television pilot, and in it I made her a duck out of water New Yorker who had become mayor of a small town in Amish country. We laughed and laughed."
She died Tuesday at 97.
