A small "OUT" lick based on the TRITONE SUBSTITUTION - Learning Gypsy Jazz - Duration: 5:04.
Hi, Clément here
So, in this video I'll show you an "out" lick
based on the tritone substitution
So, if you don't know what's the tritone substitution
I wrote an article on that, you can click on 'i' for info
in the top right corner
that way you can read the article and then watch the video
to better understand to what the tritone substitution corresponds
So I'll show you a small lick based on the substitution principle
So it's a lick with a bit of an "out" color with a harmonic tension
which is rather nice
So first I'll show you the lick on the guitar
and then I'll explain how it's built
and how you can play it yourself
So, that's the lick
So in fact it's based around arpeggios
Here I'm on a A7 chord
So, if you studied the tritone substitution, you should know that A7 is substituted by Eb7
to understand that check out the article on the tritone substitution
So, the tritone substitution of A7 is Eb7
and to play that lick we will mix up
the A7 arpeggio and the Eb7 arpeggio
well, we'll play major arpeggios
We'll start by playing the A7 arpeggio
So, root note, third and fifth
then a little chromatiscism
to then arrive on Eb and play the Eb arpeggio
same thing a little chromatiscism
there we come back on A and play again the A arpeggio
chromatiscism
we arrive on the Eb arpeggio
to come back on A
so in fact we do
the A arpeggio, the Eb arpeggio
the A arpeggio
the Eb arpeggio
we fit in once the A arpeggio, once the Eb arpeggio
and to link those two arpeggios we play a little chromaticism
which results in
which gives us the main seventh chord
then the tritone, the main chord, the tritone, etc
which gives a nice effect with that small repeating pattern
so here the key is A7
but you can play it in other keys like D7
or like G
so, it's an "out" lick with this tritone substitution principle
Here I was on a A7, and I add the A and Eb arpeggios
but for example if you were on a Eb7 you could also play this lick
except that it would invert it
it would be the substitution then the seventh chord
For example if we are on a D7
you can start by D here, but you can also start with the Ab
which would give the substitution first then the seventh chord, etc.
So, to play that lick you take the chord
and you start either from the first note of the root note of the seventh chord
or the root note of the tritone substitution corresponding to the seventh chord
So, it was a small "out" lick that you can use in many contexts
and I'll make the tablature of this lick
in the PDF that you can download on the website if you are on Youtube you can click in the description
there is a link leading you to the website apprendre-le-jazz-manouche.com
at the end of the article you can download the PDF
if you're already on the website the PDF is at the end of the page
if you have any questions on all of that, on either the substitution the lick or anything
