Today we have a really serious and sobering question.
The question is,
"Do babies who die go to heaven?"
It's hard to answer that just objectively, without emotion.
Think about the women who've lost children in the womb.
Those who've been stillborn.
Those who've had complications at birth.
I never knew him but I had a baby brother who died when he was just six weeks old.
What does the Bible say about that?
There's obviously an answer that we want to give without ever opening the Bible.
We want to say, "Yes, they haven't done anything wrong.
Why in the world would they not be in heaven?"
But as Christians, we trust that God is full of truth,
and he's full of justice and he's full of love and he's full of grace.
So we open this book for answers.
And the short answer is,
the Bible doesn't exactly say.
There's a bunch of truths that we try to fit together when we answer that question.
And the first is that from the time of our very conception,
we have a problem with God.
Psalm 51 says, "Surely I was sinful at birth.
Sinful from the time my mother conceived me."
We're not innocent,
because Adam and Eve took the whole human race into sin.
And yet, at the same time, we find out that God loves children,
even before they're born.
Psalm 139 says, "God, you knit me together in my mother's womb."
In Psalm chapter 8, God talks about the praise of little children and even infants.
And just before Jesus was born, we hear the story of little John the Baptist
in his mother's womb, leaping to praise Jesus in faith.
And so even though we believe children are born sinful,
we believe that God can reach them, that God loves them and that God wants to save them.
This is why we encourage parents to make their home a sanctuary.
You never know, God forbid, when a tragedy will happen.
It's why we love the washing of water and the Word.
Baptism, where children are reborn into the family of God.
So, we can't say definitively, but I can say this.
Our God is good.
He never does what's wrong.
When it comes to the life to come, he never ever makes a mistake.
You can trust him.
And we can teach our children from the youngest age
to know the only Jesus
that can save them from their sins.
My prayer is to all of you who have miscarried,
have lost a child,
rely on the family of God. So, we don't just have a,
a black and white answer to this question.
But we have the living, breathing arms of God
and the community of faith to which we belong.
