15 best places to eat and drink in Chicago
WINDY CITY: Chicago is becoming a renowned foodie destination.
When you think of Chicago what springs to mind? Deep dish pizzas? Jazz and blues music? Maybe hot dogs and basketball? But in recent years a whole new food and drink scene has sprung up in the Second City.
With over 100 independent breweries and more than 7,000 restaurants, theres enough to keep any foodie entertained for weeks.
From quirky coffee shops to bakeries and gourmet steak restaurants, here are 15 of the best off-the-beaten track foodie spots you have to visit in Chicago and the state of Illinois. .
Heritage Bicycles This stripped-back, stylish coffee shop is one of the best places to start your day in Chicago. The quirky cafe builds American-made custom bicycles while simultaneously serving-up award winning coffee.
At the back of the warehouse-style space is a shop selling everything from bike racks and helmets to jewellery fashioned from recycled bike parts.
The coffee shop have also teamed up with West Town Bakery, which offer a delightful selection of pastries. If you get a chance, try the cinnamon rolls – they are one of the best things I've ever tasted.
BEST FOR BRUNCH: Floriole Cafe & Bakery is famous for its breads and pastries.
Floriole Cafe & Bakery This cosy joint set up by owner Sandra started as a small pop-up at Chicago's famous Green City Market, but is now a permanent cafe in Lincoln Park.
Famed for its breads and pastries, the cafe now supplies baked goods to many other cafes in the city and has become known as one of the best brunch spots in town.
Whether you opt for something sweet or savoury, every dish is beautifully presented and ultimately delicious. For breakfast I recommend the avocado on toast or one of the delightful kouign amanns – a round croissant made with extra butter and sugar.
The black and white sesame biscuits and hot cross bun macaroon are also great if you're being indulgent. If you want a healthier option try salad trio.
It features a kale salad with carrots, peanuts, soy and sesame, wheat berries with feta and tomatoes and beetroot humous.
BEAUTIFUL: Ema offers up vibrant Mediterranean sharing-style dishes.
Ema America has a bit of a reputation for big portions and greasy fast food, but Ema is the complete opposite. The vibrant Mediterranean restaurant offers up colourful sharing-stye dishes which showcase Chef CJ Jacobson's lighter California style of cooking.
At the heart of the menu are signature like spreads, dips and mezzes and there are plenty of non-meat options for the veggies.
I suggest getting a selection of dishes to share including the spicy harissa lamb with homemade pita, the humous with marinated sweet roasted chillies and the charred eggplant (aubergine) with house yogurt, lemon and olive oil.
The crispy potatoes with miziatha and rosemary are also must – I never knew potatoes could taste so good. Vice District Brewery Launched by neighbours Curtis Tarver II and Quintin Cole, this small batch brewery is situated in the Chicago South loop.
With five staple beers on tap plus monthly specials, the brewery makes an impressive variety of brews from its tiny micro-brewery at the back of the rustic bar.
If you can't decide which beer to try buy a flight – a section of 5oz beers on a wooden plank. My personal favourite is the Coconut Porter – a dark and creamy beer with a hint of coconut.
ICONIC: Forget deep pan pizzas – Piece is famous for its Naples-style offer.
Piece Brewery & Pizzeria If youre desperate to try Chicago deep pan pizza there are plenty of eateries that serve it, but Piece offers more of your Naples-style pizza and its one of the locals favourites.
Pizzas are served with four different base options – white, red, BBQ or New Haven (that's tomato sauce and no mozzarella – but extra olive oil and parmesan).
The pizzas come in three different sizes and are designed for sharing – the large one takes up most of the table so amke sure youre hungry before you go. Every week they have new specials.
I tried The Beast, an aptly named meat feast topped with spicy por belly sausage, pistachio pesto, red onion and arugula. Craft beers are brewed on site and there are usually seven to choose from.
EXPERIMENTAL: Forbidden Roots was Chicagos first botanic brewery. Forbidden Root Brewery You might be able to see a pattern emerging here – craft breweries are big news in Chicago.
Forbidden Roots was teh citys first botanic brewery and they offer a fascinating selection of beers made from ingredients including ginger, key limes, dandelion and juniper berries.
Set in an old theatre, the beautiful building is all exposed brick and industrial fittings and the food menu is amazing. Who it comes to drinks you can opt for a flight – a selection five 5oz beers.
Money on My Rind, a gin and juice inspired beer with hints of grapefruit and Sublime Ginger, a refreshing tart beer with key limes notes, were two of my favourites. The food is just as exciting as the beers.
If you want something hearty go for the milk brined pork schnitzel sandwich with pickled beet mayo, slaw and a sesame seed bun.
For a lighter lunch or dinner opt for sharing dishes such as the cranberry humous, lamb ribs and kale salad with fennel, herbs, fried shallots and tahini orange dressing.
SWEET TREAT: Katherine Anne Confections serves the best hot chocolate I've ever had.
7. Katherine Anne Confections Located in the trendy Logan Square neighbourhood, this is a sweet shop with a difference. The counter is adorned with experimental dipped truffles, soft honey caramels and pillowy marshmallows.
They also serve the best hot chocolate I've ever tasted. You can opt from a host of different drinking chocolate flavours and get three mini mugs.
I went for salted caramel, grapefruit and chill – they were all divine but the salted caramel won hands down.
Swift and Sons Right in the heart of the former meatpacking district, Swift and Sons has a reputation as one of the best steak joints in the city.
The menu features all the classic cuts, from Ribeye to Wagyu strip lion, as well as a host of fresh seafood.
The eatery has become renowned for its Beef Wellington for two, which is wrapped in mushroom, foie gras and spinach. At $10500 (around £80) it's certainly not cheap, but definitely worth it for a special occasion.
Dinners can also opt for a host of experimental, sometimes flaming, drinks from the portable cocktail cart.
Chicago Distillery After hitting every brewery in town, you might want to move onto something a bit stronger and Chicago Distillery is the perfect spot to do this.
The distillery features a huge open plan bar with giant garage-door-sized windows running along the front. Out back the DiPrizio brothers and their families make whiskey, vodka, gin and absinthe and serve it to the public out the front.
The distillery is located in Logan Square, which is the latest up-and-coming area of the city and basically where all the cool kids hangout. THE BEAST: The Stinger Burger at Obed and Isacs is every foodies dream.
Fancy heading off-the-beaten track? If you feel like being more adventurous, there are some amazing culinary spots outside the city in the state of Illinois.
You can drive out to the original Route 66 and pick up a piece of cheery pie or venture into Galena to test out their famous hot sauce. Blaum Brothers Distilling Co If you haven't had enough alcohol to last you a lifetime, head to Blaum Brothers Distilling Co to sample their selection of fine spirits. 3.
Goldmoor Inn This elegant hilltop hotel overlooks a beautiful lake and their gourmet restaurant is perfect for a romantic dinner.
DELICIOUS: Beer and bison balls at The Lone Buffalo by Tangled Roots Brewery. For the outdoorsy type: Starved Rock State Park is a beautiful area of wilderness and is a great place to hike (approximately 1.5 hours from Chicago) 1.

Illinois Sparkling Co (downtown Ottawa) When you think of sparkling wine you probably think of Europe, but this Illinois company offers a great selection of locally made sparkling wines. For the history buff: Springfield is the capital of the U.S.
state of Illinois 3. Obed and Isaac's Microbrewery If you're craving some hearty American food this is the place to go. Order the intimidatingly huge Stinger Burger – with an extra side of mac 'n' cheese.
Danenberger Family Vineyard in New Berlin (just outside of Springfield). This vineyard is a real hidden gem.
Winemaker Susan Sullivan Danenberger and her family run the place and it's got a real family feel. They offer wine tasting sessions, wine and food pairing evenings and they certainly know how to throw a party.
