Have you ever thought that some of your nice glass beads like handmade lampwork
beads would look even nicer while being worn if they could be lit up from the
inside? Today I have a really cool product for you that does just that! Hi
there, Sandy here, welcome to another Friday findings video at
keepsakecrafts.net. So if you watched my video on my trip to the bead show a
couple weeks ago I did mention that I stopped by the table of Anglerfish,
luminous jewelry powered by nature and I was so impressed with it because when
you think of light-up jewelry you do kind of think of sort of tacky like
those blinking Christmas light necklaces but this is an entirely different thing.
The folks at Anglerfish agreed to send me one of their starter kits
can review it and demo it for you. So this is how it comes there's, no
batteries to replace, there's nothing to plug, in you just charge the clasp, and it
can be either solar powered or USB. I chose USB just because I figured I can
do that any time whereas solar power depends on the sun and you can move the
clasp to other necklaces and so you have enough in this kit to make three and it
gives you all the instructions. I haven't opened it yet. I have to say my first
impression of the packaging is that this looks like it should be on the back,
there should be maybe something a little bit more interesting to grab your
attention like a great photograph of a piece of jewelry or a few pieces lit up,
but it is all nicely and securely packaged and the package they sent to me
was in good shape. So this is the clasp, it just uses a micro USB to charge it.
A screwdriver and some other parts and pieces. So I imagine the first thing you
need to do whether you've got the USB or the solar is charge the clasp. So
after going through this a little bit more carefully I have to say the
packaging and the directions are really well done, they're very thorough
and as long as you follow them step-by-step they're easy to follow. The
first thing they have you do is take the pendant style LED, which is this one, and
they have you do a test light and they walk you through all the steps and I did
mine but I'll go through it again with you. You ready for this? Ta-da! You can see that
it's lit up. This is the clasp, yeah, there's the little micro USB for charging
and when it's clasped it lights up, so cool. So the first thing I opened was
this and there was a little note in the baggie, "This is a screwdriver," it's kind
of actually beautiful all on its own, "both ends unscrew the blade is on one
end the other end contains extra tiny set screws." They really are tiny, "unscrew
the ends over a tray or a mat to avoid losing your screws. Yes, right here. Those
are teeny, bitty, definitely. So they are contained in here, extra little set
screws, and you'll see what those are fought for in a moment. And then this end
as a little bitty screwdriver. These are screw tight crimps and if you
look at these carefully they've got a little slotted screw on them that you
can tighten and untighten. Don't know how well you could see in there but that
screw is tightened down right now and when you loosen it then you can put the
wire in there and then tighten it down again and that crimps your wire just
like on this. I have it tightened down on there so that it doesn't move
on the wire. There are also magnetic tube clasps and these as we follow the
directions you'll see they actually have one that will fit on one side, like that
that won't fit on that side of the clasp, so that one goes on this side and then
these ones go on the other side. So you have to make sure to get them in the
right order. Let's see, what else? Oh, and the packaging is pretty clever. So we have
this black piece of cardboard and my pendant style LED was just taped here
and then the two through style LEDs are up here and this is just bead stringing
wire that they're attached to and then on the back side there's a bit of bead
stringing wire with a little straw over it and that contains your tube crimps
and your springs and they do give you a few extra tube crimps. What I found the
best way was the best way of managing these was to get a pair of nylon jaw
pliers and then you can hold on to that very tightly then you can get your
slotted screwdriver in there and I found... everything is stuck to that! I found
these first ones were tough to do, they were tightened down very tightly, so what
you have to do is just press very firmly with your screwdriver. There we go, and
see that wouldn't come off before when the screw was tightened down. Now
another thing you need to make sure of is which end. Not only do the magnets
have a certain side that they will work on but also you have to have correct end
of wire. Your magnets go on the clasp with the large hole facing the magnet. So
you pop those on, find the ones that will work, see that one won't. There. So let me
pull out one of these. I'll show you the testing. Nope, that's not right, you need
the big hole facing the magnet. Okay so now I have two magnetic tube clasps on
my clasp with the big hole facing the magnet on both sides, so now I can pop
one of the wires into there and then looking, we're watching the LED, pop the
other wire and it's not coming on so swap it around. Pop the wire in, and now it's
on. So this is the way it has to go so what I'm going to do is actually pull
off this one and then slide it on and just keep it with this as I'm working
and do one side at a time. So once you make sure which end goes which way then
you can start stringing things onto your wire. The first thing is your screw tight
crimp and you want to put that on with the slightly tapered end that will be
facing away from the clasp, the flat end should be towards the clasp, then you
slide on your tube clasp putting the wire through the
narrow end.
So now you put on the spring and then we'll put on a tube crimp, and they do
give you a couple extras so that you can practice. The folks at Anglerfish asked
me to let you know that you really need to use just a standard pair of crimping
pliers and you want to make sure that you do your first crimp with this hole
that's more u-shaped that's closer to you and further from
the tip of the pliers. That will give you a more secure connection than just
flattening it with a chain nose pliers like we sometimes do. So I'm going to
squeeze that with that end to make that u-shape, then you turn it 90 degrees
and put it in the upper one, the more round or oval one, and flatten, and that
gives you a nice, small, crimp that's very discreet and it's actually going to fit
inside that clasp. You can kind of see how this works.
Now this will slide down, compress on the spring, and that crimp is hidden inside
there. So what you need to do now is slide your screw tight crimp up against
it so all of, all four of your pieces are at the end of the wire. You just want it
so that the spring is just a couple of millimeters past this magnetic clasp,
hold everything in place and then grab your screwdriver. This can be a little
tricky because the magnet wants to jump about, but tighten down that screw
so that that is firmly, you see it only took a couple turns, and that is firmly
on the wire. Do that on both ends and tada we have light! And you definitely
want to make the test piece before you do any stringing. And they've given you a
fair amount of wire so that you can string your necklace nice and long. Like
I said the directions are pretty clear, this is the diagram for what I just
showed you how to do, and it's really nice and clear. And now comes the fun
part because we can use this to test our beads and see which ones are going to
work best to be lit up for a necklace.
And I pulled out a whole bunch of beads just to play, some are going to work
better than others. Some are just too opaque, there's just too much white. I'm
gonna, I'm gonna turn off my lights. All right I turned off my light so
hopefully you can see the glow a little bit better. Here's, here's one problem
that you can see with it is that this bead is a little bit big for this
application because the light only is contained in one spot so you kinda can't
light up the whole bead evenly. Just gonna turn my light back on. It's kind of
hard to catch it on camera to show you the light this one's pretty cool in a
dark room but in a lit up room you just barely see the glow because there's a
lot of white in here. Well maybe that helps, there we go. I just put a piece of
cardboard over the light. We have some harsh shadows but at least you can kind
of see better now. This one has some gold foil in there and
also there's a lot of the white bead release still left in there and so that
kind of shows up it doesn't look very nice. You really just have to go through
your beads. That one you just kind of sort of get a
dim glow. You would think this one one like this that's very transparent would
work well but you can see it, you just sort of see that sharp light behind it,
it's not diffused. The ones that I think look the best are ones that are a little
bit frosted because that really diffuses the light, it also, unfortunately, shows up
a lot of the flaws in the bead. Sadly I never was able to get enough practice in
to get really good at lamp working. You would think this one would look good but
again it's too big and so what you end up is just this kind of sharp point
of light showing instead of a nice pretty, even glow. You'd even think one of
these would would look good, if we discount the fact that it's cracked, but
again it's a little big it might work for some applications. This is one of my
favorites actually was this red one. I think it's just gorgeous,
it would be a really pretty at Christmas time. This is just one from the craft
store, so they don't necessarily have to be expensive beads, you just have to find
some, if they're crackled or if they're frosted. This one's kind of cool, this
one's got some swirly stuff in it so you get a lot of variation in it. This is,
again, another inexpensive bead from the craft store that's got a bit of an
interesting coating on the outside which helps diffuse the light. Actually this
one is one of the prettier ones, it's got a lovely glow that one's pretty with the
veining. I sort of like that. You'd think the crystals would be cool and that,
that's kind of cool and that you get the faceted reflections, but because it's
glass, clear glass you sort of have that sharp light I was talking about.
This one's interesting, this one won't fit all the way in there, but I love the
way it shines out the bottom so you just have glow at
the top and the bottom. And and this one, again you'd think it would look good, but
because it's an uneven thickness, you just... it's not as good as you'd think. This
one was actually one of my favorites, this is just a bead I made with green
glass and some gold leaf, that one's pretty cool. That one's really pretty
again because it's a little bit frosted and not totally clear. So this is the fun
part, finding the beads that will work. So this
is just really too cool. As opposed to those kind of tacky, kitschy
light-up necklaces that you've seen I think this is just a really cool kind of
interesting and different sophisticated look for lighting up beads. So if you're
interested in something a little bit different and kind of fun
I'd recommend it. I think it's a well-designed product. So thanks so much
to Anglerfish, I've really had a good time playing with this and I'm looking
forward to putting together a necklace. I'll be sharing that with you folks once
I get it figured out. If you want more information check out the Anglerfish
website, that will be linked in my blog and you can find my blog post by
clicking on the cards in the upper right of this video or the link in the bottom
left or the description box. The Anglerfish site has a fantastic support
page with several PDFs and videos to help walk you through the steps. They
also have a blog and they have a gallery full of wonderful inspirational pieces.
They don't yet ship internationally but they're working on it and hope to be
able to in 2018. Once you get your three necklaces put together if you want to
make more you can actually purchase all of the components from the starter kit
individually at the website. Thanks for watching, make sure to subscribe to my
channel if you haven't already. Happy creating, bye bye.
