Hi, I'm Cheryl with Saskatchewan Pension
Plan. I'm going to discuss the importance
of investment goals. When it comes to
investing some investors feel they can
"beat the market". They want to see immediate
short-term gains while avoiding losses. For
the average investor timing the market
is unrealistic and results in a high
amount of risk and a very low success
rate. It's important to have realistic
investment goals. As an investor you want
to accumulate capital and end up with a
good return on your investment. Saving
requires perseverance and patience. With
a "slow and steady" outlook the focus is more
on ensuring financial security over the
long-term by having a well-diversified
portfolio. Having this increases the
probability of reaching your goals. So
when it comes to investing for
retirement, slow and steady wins the race,
time is an asset. The objective of the
Saskatchewan Pension Plan Balanced Fund
has been capital accumulation-growing
members' accounts to provide income to
members at retirement in a prudent, risk
controlled manner. Rather than focusing
on market timing as a defense mechanism,
diversification of the investment
portfolio, combined with a long-term
focus has proven to be successful. With
Saskatchewan Pension Plan's Balanced Fund,
this has been achieved by diversifying
investments first across several asset
classes, and further diversifying them
between our two investment managers, Leith
Wheeler Investment Council and Greystone
Managed Investments, having two opposing
management styles. The Balanced
Fund is designed for long-term investors
who can tolerate a moderate level of
risk accepting short-term losses along
the road to long-term gains. The chart
reflects Saskatchewan Pension Plan's annual
returns resulting in an average return
to members of 8.1% since inception. It is
easy to validate the saying "slow and
steady wins the race"
when it comes to investment strategies.
Even if a member had only invested $100
monthly since inception of the Plan they
would have over $163,000
after 31 years.
Our goal at Saskatchewan Pension Plan is
to strive for maximumizing
investor returns while avoiding
unnecessary risks. For more information on
investing and investment fund options
please see the fund fact sheets available
on our website. Thank you
