Allan Holdsworth Chords - Voicings and Inversions - Duration: 12:03.

(Jazz Guitar Chords)

Hi everybody, my name is Jens Larsen.

When I started to plan this lesson,

I was actually just going to give you

some different chord versions for some II V I progressions,

similar to what I played at the beginning of this video,

but when I played the example that I have

at the beginning of the video, then I realized

that these two voicings

(Jazz Guitar Chords)

are in fact inversions of each other,

so they are the same notes, but just in a different order.

That made me think about the fact that maybe

checking out some inversions for some of these voicings

is actually more useful, because that means

that you actually have more voicings

that you can use in other situations,

like more of a modal setting, or other progressions,

and of course, also just inverting voicings

is always something that can give you some new,

interesting material.

If you want to learn more about jazz guitar,

about improvising over chord changes,

interesting chord voicings, or analyzing progressions,

then subscribe to my channel.

If you want to make sure not to miss anything,

then click the little bell notification icon

next to the subscribe button.

(Jazz Guitar Chords)

The first voicing I want to talk about

is the one that I'm already inverting in the example.

So that's the voicing that I'm using for Cmaj7.

Strictly speaking, this is a C6/9,

because it doesn't actually have a major seven

but it does have a six,

and where I start is,

(guitar note rings out)

and so I start from the fifth,

and then I just actually stack fifths from there,

so I have G, D, and then a fifth up is A,

and another fifth up is E.

So that's the voicing I start with.

(arpeggiated guitar chord)

If you want to invert this,

so first you're going to need to figure out

what is the order of the notes

so you can make inversions of it,

and the way I did that was just to

put them all together in one octave,

and it could be something like G, A, D, and E,

and what you'll also notice is

that those four notes together

are kind of spelling out like an Asus4,

(arpeggiated guitar chord)

with an A7sus4,

which is also useful to remember,

because that means that some of your A7sus4 chords

are actually really good for using a Cmaj7

so that's another way of thinking about

finding material for a Cmaj7.

But in this case, (arpeggiated guitar chord)

we have this voicing,

so really at I'm going to do is,

right now you have the order of the notes,

so the G, A, and D, and E on the screen hopefully,

and then you can see that if I take the G,

then the note lower than that one will be,

so I actually have to go back up the octave

to the E, and if I take the D,

then the note under that one would be an A,

and if I take the A,

then the note under that one would be a G,

and if I take the E, then the note under that one

would be a D, so that's kind of how

I'm finding the version of this,

and then that gives me this one,

(arpeggiated guitar chord)

which I actually already had

in the example obviously, but still,

so now we have (arpeggiated guitar chord)

this one, and then this one. (guitar chord)

If we do that again, then E goes down to D,

A goes down to G,

G goes down to E,

and D goes down to A,

and then I have this voicing.

(Jazz guitar chord)

(arpeggiated guitar chord)

And if I do that one more time,

so D goes down to an A,

G is down to E,

E is down to D,

and A is down to G,

and then I have (arpeggiated guitar chord)

which is also, this is kind of clearly

an Asus4 voicing, this low.

Now we have the inversions.

(gentle guitar chords)

and you can try and use that.

So this will work as well if you just have

sort of a static Cmaj chord at some point,

you can start messing around

with how it is to move these around.

I would say that Holdsworth voicings,

I just made a video probably that went up last week

when you see this, about different ways of comping,

and I think the Holdsworth voicings probably work better

if you're really trying to just spell out the harmonies,

so you're not going to be just playing short steps,

you're going to be playing sustained chords

the way you can really hear,

because it's important that you have these open structures,

and if you just play short rhythms with short notes

for short chord steps, you're not really

going to get the effect of the chord out there,

so probably this kind of stuff you want to play

where you play long, sustained voicings.

So let's try and take one of the m7 voicings,

so if you take the first one that's

(arpeggiated guitar chord) this one

and there the a few different things about this,

I think it's from Looking Glass,

I'm not really sure, but this voicing

I think also is probably played like this,

(arpeggiated guitar chord)

because I checked out the video,

but the way I always remember playing it and checked it out

was like this (arpeggiated guitar chord)

so that's how I'm playing it,

so I don't have the G on the G string,

I have it here on the B string.

If we order those notes in pitch,

then we get an E, an F, a G, and a C,

so there are different things,

you can also start looking at this chord

and get different versions out of it,

because if you take this one,

this is really also an open voiced C major triad

over an F, (arpeggiated guitar chord)

so of course, you can also experiment

with moving around the top part

and then just having a bass note, an F bass note,

so that is one open voiced triad,

this one would be another one,

(mellow guitar chord)

so we have (arpeggiated guitar chord)

and you can also have this one.

(mellow guitar chord)

So that's another way of coming up with

some other voicings just by thinking

this one as a triad and a bass note,

but the way I'm going to do it here

for the rest of this session,

it'll be just the inversions,

so those really straight inversions.

I'm going to be a little bit quicker

than I was the first one,

because the principle's completely the same.

(guitar chord)

So let's see, so we have D, and we have all of the notes

as being E, F, G, and C,

that means that if we take this,

let's take it maybe up actually,

so we have the F goes to G,

the C goes to E, and then we have here,

the G goes up to a C,

and the E goes up to the F.

So that's this, which is really difficult to play,

so you get this voicing that it's like,

you could play it I guess like this

(arpeggiated guitar chord)

but an easier way would be to play it like this,

(arpeggiated guitar chord)

where now I'm shifting the E over to the D string here.

(arpeggiated guitar chord)

If we repeat that process, then we get this voicing

(Jazz Guitar Chords)

and then we can take this also,

so the last one, let's just take that one down,

and that would be this one.

(arpeggiated guitar chord)

The difficult thing about this one is

not to mute the D string.

(Jazz Guitar Chords)

We can of course also do the same

with one of the voicings that I'm using

for the altered dominant,

so if we take the first one again, so that will be,

(arpeggiated guitar chord) this voicing,

and if I order the pitches in that one,

then that would be like, Eb, F, B, and Db.

Then if I start making inversions,

then we get this.

(jazz guitar chord)

(arpeggiated guitar chord)

So this one's really hard to play

in this key anyway.

You could move it up actually to this,

(arpeggiated guitar chord)

and then we move it up to that one,

and then we get this one,

(arpeggiated guitar chord)

and then we also get, well, this one,

there are a few versions,

you can play it like this,

or you can almost play it as a bar, like this.

(mellow guitar chord)

Now that we have a few different altered dominant voicings,

let's look at how we can put everything together

in some II V I examples.

So the first one sounds like this.

(Jazz Guitar Chords)

So here, I'm using this version of the Dmin7 voicing,

but I'm playing it up here,

and then of course, this altered dominant,

and then one of the original,

actually the original voicing I used for the major seven,

which of course is still a major 6/9 voicing.

Another example could be this.

(Jazz Guitar Chords)

So it has a nice ascending melody,

so this is starting with,

(arpeggiated guitar chord)

this kind of spicy minor seven voicing,

because we have this interval in there,

so it's really, it still wants to move on,

you can really tell that it's a dissonant voicing,

even if it is just a minor seven chord in the progression.

And this altered dominant, (Jazz Guitar Chords)

and then resolving to this major 6/9 voicing.

As you can tell, we get a lot more options

when we start making inversions

of the different chord voicings.

I think the whole idea of using inversions

is definitely something you want to check out

with whatever chords you're using,

and especially also if you can combine it

with other ways of looking at a chord,

so one of the chords that I sort of split up

into also being a Cmaj triad over an F bass note,

even though I'm still using it as a Dmin voicing,

but that way of thinking of it

is going to give me some other ways

to come up with some new material

just using those same four notes,

and really, I think stuff like that is worth exploring,

because it's just going to give you more options,

and hopefully if you play something,

when you try this out, my it resonates with you,

maybe you get a new idea and it's something you can use

in your own playing or in a composition

or an arrangement, so for that,

I think it's a really useful way to spend your time

if you want to explore some stuff with harmony.

Of course, you can also try and use these,

I know they're a little bit tricky to play,

but you could use them as arpeggios in a solo as well.

When you're practicing these voicings,

you have to be a little bit careful with your hand,

because they can be kind of heavy

for your left hand to play,

so you have to make sure that you're warmed up,

and also if it feels very difficult to play them,

see if you can find a better place on the neck

to try and work with them in the beginning,

and in general, just be careful

that you don't strain your left hand,

because that can be something

that can be difficult to get rid of again.

So think about that when you're trying to play it,

if it feels very difficult to play,

I would actually just advise you not to really play it.

For the rest, really just have fun with them.

If you want to check out more stuff like this,

I have another lesson I'll link to in the description

that's covering these types of voicings,

but done on a complete jazz standard,

and it's actually on Days of Wine and Roses,

so there's a video there, and you can also just download

How to change the sky in Photoshop - Learn how to change the sky using masks - Duration: 8:24.

In today's video, you learn how to turn a photo like this

in a photo like this

In this video, we will learn how to change the sky of a photo

and all this can be done using masks in Photoshop

Photoshop masks are great for doing a number of things

And one of them is to hide things or show things that you want to show

Let's choose the photos we will use

After choosing the stumps dimension them to the desired format

The mask can be activated in the second icon from left to right in the bar on the right side

With the mask on, what you paint in black will be hidden, revealing the photo of the previous layer

I'll just paint in a way that I can see the photo in a general context

Okay, this is what I want.

Now I'll select the correct one

I'll use the selection tool to select all the sky I want to change in the photo

Once everything is selected, I will invent the selection

and then activate the mask

Some adjustments to position the sky better

Do not forget to select hollow places so the mask becomes more real.

For time reasons, I will not be very precise in the selections here

The leaves between the trees need a touch

Now that the mask is complete let's hit the colors of the photos

For this, I will use an adjustment layer, Color Balance

As the house layer is less blue than the sky layer, I will add blue to the house layer

Then I hit the lights and shadows of the sky layer with another layer of adjustment, Curves

Once you're all balanced, then now is the time to finish editing.

At this time you can use Lightroom, simply export a JPEG or TIFF

Once all the layers are ready, I'll merge them all

After this, I will use Camera Raw to edit the photo just like using Lightroom

Camera Raw is pretty much the same as Lightroom

See the other videos about Lightroom on the channel

In Photoshop you can also use the Nik Collection Plugins

I will use Viveza 2 for a better photo

As the photo has a bit of noise I will use the Dfine2, also from Nik to take some of the noise of the photo

Some more details on Camera Raw

Once everything is ready you just need to export your photo!

How to Canoe | 3 Key Strokes All Paddlers Should Know - Duration: 4:22.

This episode of Paddle TV is brought to you by the ACA—improving the paddlesports

experience for over a century. Learn more at American canoe dot-org

One of the reasons canoeing is such a popular activity is that as long as you

stick to small calm bodies of water and stay close to shore, you can throw on a

lifejacket, hop into a canoe and go for a paddle without having received any

formal instruction. That being said, taking the time to learn a few key canoe

strokes will make you a more competent paddler and make you safer on the water,

because you'll be more equipped to deal with wind and waves which can play havoc

on inexperienced canoers. And so in this video, we're gonna look at three key

strokes that will dramatically improve your paddling competency. The first

stroke we're going to talk about is the J stroke. The J stroke is the form of a

forward stroke that allows you to keep the boat going straight while you paddle.

On one side of the canoe, the J stroke starts like a normal forward stroke but

once your paddle shaft is alongside your knee you'll twist your top control hands

thumb forward and down while you pull the same hand inward. While doing this,

your lower shaft hand stays still and acts as a pivot so that as your top hand

pulls inward, the paddle blade is prying water away from the stern of the canoe,

which counters the natural turning effect of the forward stroke. This prying

action will only be effective if you've twisted your top control hand enough so

that the blade is parallel to the side of the boat while doing so. The next

essential canoe stroke we'll talk about is the draw stroke. The draw stroke is

used to move a canoe sideways, or in tandem, it can be used to spin a canoe

around if both paddlers use it on opposite sides.

The draw stroke is a key maneuvering stroke when launching, landing,

and a great positioning stroke when performing a rescue. The draw stroke

begins with the paddle positioned to the side of the canoe adjacent to your hip,

with your arms extended and your torso rotated to face the paddle. The more

vertical you get your paddle, the more effective the stroke will be.

Now with the blade planted deeply in the water, pull it

towards your body. The stroke ends before the paddle hits the side of the canoe

and there are two ways to finish the stroke. The easy finish is to slice the

paddle out of the water towards the stern. The more advanced and fluid

technique involves twisting your top control hand thumb away from you to

rotate the paddle 90 degrees, you can then slice your paddle blade through the

water back out to where it started. You can then twist your blade back into

position and take another draw stroke. The last stroke we're going to talk

about has two variations—the stern draw and the stern pry. These are key strokes

for solo canoers and for the person at the back of a tandem canoe, because they

represent the best way to initiate turns or for keeping the boat going straight.

The stern pry starts with your paddle flat against the side of the canoe at

the stern, with your lower shaft hand resting on the gunnel just behind the

hip and your top control hand reaching across the canoe. With your blade fully

immersed, you'll pull your top control hand inward, while your lower shaft hand

stays on the gunnel acting as a pivot point for the pry. The stern draw is

used to turn your canoe in the opposite direction.

The idea is to pull water directly to the stern of your canoe and this is done

by planting your paddle blade behind you and away from the side of the canoe.

To take the stroke, you'll push your top control hand across the canoe while you pull

your lower shaft hand back and towards the stern of the canoe. Just make sure to

lift the blade out of the water before it hits your canoe, where it can get

pinned and throw you off balance. Well I hope you found this video helpful and if

you enjoyed it, please subscribe to our Paddle TV YouTube channel for more tips and tricks.

DK YOO MEGA FIST PUNCH - Duration: 5:12.

We haven't been able to see all the basic mechanisms of punching

You see, he's got joints.

These joints need to move like a wave.

Imagine you have nunchucks like that.

The joints need to be relaxed

You can't make too big a move.

Nobody's boxing like that in boxing.

They're only doing straight shots.

Elbow kicks like Muay Thai

There are some people who hit like that.

By forming a circle

But normally it would have to be a straight line.

That's the area that must strike.

It's the same axis as a straight line

Cause if we don't, we'll risk hitting ourselves.

During training it's best to make big gestures

The most important thing is to pull the force from the ground.

That's the Taichi method.

There he drops out

It's that exercise

Falling is the same thing

This is the principle that

He can use his limbs as a whip

At the wing chun you can use strikes like this

We're throwing a hand out.

We lift and launch

If you put speed

The hand stays stuck to the cheek

And then we can go on with a punch.

It is necessary to use the rotation of the pelvis after use

It's just the strength that comes from the ground.

After that, it's gonna be a reflex to draw power from the ground.

You really have to press your legs to make a powerful shot

the Tesla battery pack heater well what does it do well as the name suggests it

heats the battery pack but why well two main reasons number one if lithium gets

Model S X and three do not like to be charged at far below freezing as such

the battery pack warmer heats the pack up to a safe temperature to allow

charging and charging means actually plugging it in and also region this is

why if it's very cold out you might not have regen when you first get in your

car and it's been sitting singing overnight now the battery pack heater

uses a considerable amount of power it usually kicked in when you get in your

car or plug it in and the pack temperature is at or below freezing and

brings it up to a necessary temperature usually shuts off at around forty five

degrees Fahrenheit roughly I think that's seven point five degrees Celsius

roughly approximate and of course freezing would be zero Celsius

now in terms of using the battery pack heater to gain your region back personal

opinion it's not worth it why because the amount of power it consumes is going

to use more power than it would if you just used your friction brakes in the

car as such we have this nice feature on our model our Tesla vehicles called

range mode it does a couple of different things and it varies depending on which

type of Model S xr3 you have and features such as two wheel drive or

four-wheel drive but one big thing it does is it reduces the temperature that

the battery pack heater will turn on in most cases so if you turn on range mode

instead of that battery pack heater turning on at 32 degrees Fahrenheit or

zero degrees Celsius it won't turn on until about negative 5 to negative 10

degrees Fahrenheit hey Siri negative 10 degrees Fahrenheit to Celsius or

negative twenty three point three degrees Celsius

now that's Tesla's hard-coded cutoff limit we're below that they don't want

the vehicle to not heat the battery pack now if the vehicle is parked not

charging and just just parked that heater it's and this is a misconception

that heater is not going to turn on unless the battery pack gets to the

danger levels that Tesla has hard-coded now if you're not plugged in that

battery pack here will draw power from the natural traction pack and if you are

plugged in but not charging it will draw that power from the wall or the grid now

that is why Tesla says do not leave your vehicle unplugged in temperatures of

negative 20 degrees Fahrenheit or colder for periods of exceeding 24 hours

and me Hyneman is if it's a charged up battery pack and within 24 hours of it

keeping and this is self-preservation mode pretty much here that battery pack

is going to be dead and it will no longer be able to maintain the proper

temperatures to keep damage from happening to your traction pack now

anything can help and it could be as simple as a hundred and twenty Volt

15-amp outlet you're not probably at those temperatures you're probably not

going to gain any range but you're also not going to really lose too much and at

the very worst you might lose a little bit but the car will be able to pretty

much maintain its systems indefinitely as long as there's shore power even on

that 15-amp outlet consider it this way for every two minutes of power drawn

from a 15 amp 120 volt outlet that gives the car enough power to heat the battery

pack for one minute and it's not going to be continuous once the pack reaches a

safe temperature the pack heater will shut off and they'll continue to

hopefully charge the battery then and as it's needed turns on/off on/off just

like when you're heating your house and your furnace will turn on and off on and

off to keep the temperature set as required now another way to keep your

battery pack warm is the actual act of charging it so if yours is like mine and

plugged in outdoors in a driveway most of the time they're parked outside in

the driveway most of the time at night do these charging what you can do is

adjust the average of your charging so that way the the charging completes

shortly before you need to use your vehicle the next day

benefit of this number one you will have your full region right away when you're

driving without having to worry about the battery pack heater needing to keep

the battery pack to give your region and act of charging alone should provide in

most situations except the absolute most coats off your northern canada or alaska

you might have a little bit of issue there but in general it will provide

enough heat just from charging the battery to be able to keep the pack warm

enough to provide you at least some sort of regen windchill will be the the

quickest thing to cold plus the windchill will give me the quickest

thing to reduce that pack temperature so even if you have an unheated garage that

you could park in you're gonna be so far ahead in terms of how warm your pack

will stay then if you're parked outside now

just in terms of the car maintaining itself until it hits that magic

temperature where Tesla has determined yeah that's it which is probably gonna

be around I can't give you an exact number because we don't get those kind

of temperatures here in Wisconsin and if we do it's only for a few hours

overnight and by morning the Sun come enough that temperature is raising

anyways but I'd have to say it's gonna be right around negative 20 degrees

Fahrenheit hey Siri negative 20 degrees Fahrenheit to Celsius negative twenty

eight point nine degrees Celsius so since that's what Tesla States not to

leave your carpet unplugged in for more than 24 hours we'll say around negative

20 degrees Fahrenheit that's the only time in general that the pack will

heater will kick in when the car is not charging or not in operation so say your

car's plugged in outside overnight and charging completes within one hour so at

that point the car's not charging it's also not being used it's not gonna heat

the battery pack so you're not wasting power heating a battery pack it's not

like an internal combustion engines block heater or that suckers running all

night just to keep that block that that block warm so it starts to the next day

it doesn't work quite like that common misconception so it's not that you're

wasting power it's just that it's not being used and it only will kick in

again then once again if you have range mode off when you get in the next day so

you can start having your region now also not warming up the battery pack

not only provides you slower charging or no charging at all or / no region at all

you might also have lower power output when driving so if you watched my video

a couple days ago about I plugged in with a absolutely frozen battery pack

you can see my my energy graph and I had I was limited to about 75 kilowatt of

acceleration drawing a lot of power at colder temperatures there's also a lot

more resistance in the batteries and that resistance will prevent you from

being able to efficiently draw a lot of power out of them and which is why test

limits out the output net out for that output limit also limits the amount of

stress placed on those cells so I hope that answered some questions now if you

do have a little bit of regen now even if you have range mode on when you plug

the car in the car takes over everything battery management system controls

everything you have no way to disable that pack heater it's gonna draw Shore

power once you're plugged in - until it can start charging the battery and it

hits that magic limit around 45 degrees Fahrenheit and despite belief it does

not bring the battery pack up to full pop temperature it just gives you enough

so you get some region you can do your charging now with superchargers the

supercharger alone once that starts charging it it's able to dump so much

current and so much power and energy into your battery pack that it really

won't need the heater in the entire time it will once the heater shuts off just

the act of that charging is also going to continue to bring the temperature of

the pack up and you'll notice then as a pack warms the charging current from the

supercharger will go up and pretty much it's only a supercharger is going to be

able to output enough power or it will be limited on a colder

pack once the battery pack heater shuts off and I know I've seen some variations

over the versions my 90 D draws about 3 to 3.5 kilowatt for the battery pack

heater and on my old M s60 from 2013 I actually noticed it draw at one point at

least it appeared to approximately 6 kilowatt although it was a couple of

versions ago they might have found that they don't really need that much power

for charging or warming the battery pack so I hope you learned just a little bit

here if you want me to clarify something else or a little more please post in the
