Hey everybody! Welcome back to my channel. Today I'm going to be doing my fall
book haul for you guys. As you guys might know, I've been trying to stick to a
project 5 book buying plan which I will leave a link to in the description so
you guys can see what that is. However over the past few months I haven't
really been sticking to it. I had a couple of weeks there in end of
September/early October where I like, was going through a lot, and I was finding
comfort in buying books and I was kind of letting myself just do it. And since
then, things have gotten a little bit better for me. I don't feel the need to
comfort myself through buying books. However, I haven't really been sticking
to the project 5 book buying plan anyway, But I have found that I have scaled my
buying back quite a bit on my own anyway. I've been finding that I don't
necessarily go out and buy books as soon as I want them. I kind of wait to see if
it's something that I actually want to read and if it's something that I want
to read soon. One of my main goals for 2017 was to kind of taper my book buying
a bit and I feel like through the project 5 book buying plan and the way
I've been buying books this year I've definitely kind of achieved that goal.
I'm not buying books willy-nilly. I'm buying books that I'm actually thinking
I want to read and books that I am hoping to get to very soon versus books
that I'm like, I'm kind of interested in it, maybe I'll read it one day. So without
further ado, I'm going to hop into all the books that I got in these fall
months between the end of August and the beginning of November. The first book
that I got was an audiobook and that was The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue
by Mackenzi Lee. I've already listened to this book and it was a pretty
enjoyable listen. This is about Monty. It's set back in the - I want to say 1700s.
1700/1800s. And Monty is about to inherit his father's estate and this book is
about his final, like, hurrah. He's going on a tour of Europe
before he has to settle down and run the estate. The next book that I bought was
It by Stephen King. This was - I got some dog hair on here. This was a
buddy read with Michael and Becky and I actually also obtained the audiobook
which, I kind of I read both the audiobook and the
physical book together. I have already completed this. I really, really enjoyed
it. It's very very well-written, obviously, because it's a Stephen King book, but I
just really enjoyed myself while reading this and I'm very happy that I now have
it as part of my collection. Next book that I received I've also already read
and that is They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera. This I buddy read with
Michael and this is about a world where on the day that you die you receive a
phone call informing you that you will die at some point in that day. This is
about two boys who received that phone call and they actually end up finding
each other to spend the last day of their lives together. Next up I received
my September Book of the Month box and in that box I got three books like I
usually do every month. First up in that box I got Little Fires Everywhere by
Celeste Ng. This is Celeste Ng's second book and it's about two families. One family
who's a little bit richer and one family who is just a mother-daughter duo and
the richer family rents out a house to the mother-daughter duo and then
unexpectedly the richer family's house burns down and no one knows what happens.
So it's got a lot of family drama. It's got a lot of mystery. It sounds very
similar - not similar, but like, a lot of family drama and mystery definitely
reflects Celeste Ng's first book Everything I Never Told You. Do I'm
excited to get to this one and check it out.
*SNEEZE*
BRETT: (from the next room) BLESS YOU! RILEY: THANK YOU!
The next book I got was
Sourdough by Robin Sloane. This is a book about I believe a woman who works in
like a very - I think she's an either in marketing or finance or something or...
She's a software programmer. So she has like a very intense, like, demanding job
and so she kind of turns to baking bread as a new hobby and a new passion and I
just am really intrigued by that premise because I just love books about
food and reading stories of chefs is always very interesting to me. The next
book I got was Startup by Doree Shafrir. This is written by somebody who works at
BuzzFeed and it's very much so a study of what it means to be at a tech startup
company. I've heard that this is really funny and
I just definitely want to give this a shot. The next few I picked up on a
Barnes & Noble trip I went on in mid-September. It's been a long time
since I've gone to a bookstore and actually like purchased books from the
bookstore so it was really fun and it like definitely made me feel better.
The first book I picked up was Landline by Rainbow Rowell. I loved Attachments
when I read it this summer and I definitely wanted to give Rainbow Rowell
another chance. This is another one of her adult contemporary novels and I'm
excited to get to this one. The next one I'm very intrigued by and this is Romeo
and/or Juliet by Ryan North and this is kind of like a choose-your-own-adventure
version of the story of Romeo and Juliet. So there's like, all of these like,
different prompts and you can really kind of build the story however you like
and I'm just like super intrigued by this and I'm very excited to like give
this a try. And there's lots of really cool illustrations and there's a few
illustrations in here by Noelle Stevenson who is one of the main artists
and writers on the Lumberjanes series she wrote Nimona and I just - I'm a big
fan. Like, all of these illustrations are hers. So I'm a very big fan of her
artwork. So I'm really really excited to dive into this one and see what it's
like. The next one I picked up at Barnes & Noble was Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt
Vonnegut. I read Galapagos by Kurt Vonnegut last summer and really
enjoyed it. That was my first Kurt Vonnegut and so I decided to go with one
that's a little bit more well-known and so I picked up Slaughterhouse-Five. Can't
wait to get to it. I think his writing is just so brilliant so I hope I enjoy
this one just as much as I like Galapagos. I then picked up the only
Maria Semple book I did not own. This one is called This One Is Mine. I really
don't know a lot about this book but I just know I really enjoy Maria
Semple's writing. I'm going on a vacation in a couple of weeks and the last time I
went on vacation I read Where'd You Go Bernadette for the first time. So I
thought I could pick this up and take this on my vacation with me. I am so
excited to get to it and see if this one matches up to Where'd You Go Bernadette.
I read her newest book called Today Will Be Different over the summer
and didn't like it as much as I liked Where'd You Go Bernadette. So hopefully
this one will remind me of the Maria Semple that I love. And then the last book
I picked up from Barnes Noble was the Barnes & Noble classic edition of To
Kill a Mockingbird. I think that's what these editions are called. Barnes & Noble
has a bunch of classics in these really beautiful hard covers. I actually have a
couple over here. I don't know if you can see them in frame but I have Pride and Prejudice
and Tom Sawyer. And so I wanted you to pick up a new copy of To Kill a
Mockingbird because my copy of To Kill a Mockingbird is extremely beat up. I
wanted to get a nice new copy of To Kill a Mockingbird just to have. I'm gonna keep
my nice beat-up one because that's the first time I read To Kill a Mockingbird.
It got really beat up when I read it so I wanted to get a new one. I'm going to
reread To Kill a Mockingbird in 2018 at some point so I wanted to have a nice
new copy to break in and love. The next book that I received is Crooked Kingdom
by Leigh Bardugo. This is the second and final book in the
Six of Crows duology. I originally got this because Becky, Michael, and I wanted
to buddy read it, but I just never got around to it. October was a very crazy
month and that's when we were going to read it, and I just never got around to
it. But I do hope to get to it very early on in 2018 so I can finish of the
duology and I cannot wait to pick this up and
see what happens. I then picked up another audio book and this one was
Thanks, Obama: My Hopey, Changey, White House Years by David Litt. I did already
listen to this and I really, really enjoyed it. It's about David Litt's time
working as a speechwriter for a President Obama and it's just so
intriguing. So if you are at all interested in the Obama presidency and
how his speeches were developed I would definitely check out this audio book. It
was really great and it's actually really humorous too so if you're looking
for a good laugh definitely check this one out. The next one I picked up was
Lumberjanes, volume Five: Band Together. Again, I've already read this one and I
love the Lumberjanes so much. I talk about them a lot on this channel so if
you want to know anything about the Lumberjanes definitely like, click on any
of one of my other videos. You'll probably find out more.
I did already read this like I said and this one I wasn't as impressed by as the
rest of the series but it's still really great to hang out with these characters
and just kind of see what they get up to. I then picked up the third and final
book in the Chaos Walking trilogy and that is Monsters of Men by Patrick Nes.s I
want to finish this series by the end of 2017 and this is the last book that I
need to read so this will be read very soon. And then I decided to pick up the
only other Patrick Ness book that I didn't own and that is More Than This by
Patrick Ness and I've heard fantastic things about this which I'm not
surprised by. His kind of standalone contemporary is wonderful. So I cannot
wait to read this one as well. I then picked up Honor Girl by Maggie Thrash. I
don't remember where I originally heard of this graphic novel. I did originally
hear about it last fall, but then Chelsea from Chelsea Dolling Reads read this
during Booktubeathon and I just like really needed to read it because I do
really trust her opinions on books and so I finally picked this up. It's a
beautiful hardcover graphic novel. It's a graphic memoir actually. It's like a
coming-of-age story about this girl who goes to camp and I believe she's discovering
her sexuality for the first time. So I've heard fantastic things about this
graphic novel and it's beautiful so I cannot wait to dive into this one as
well. I then decided to pick up two more Stephen King books and the first one I
picked up was Misery. This one is about a an author who is ending a series - a
really, really popular, well known book series, and I believe he like, crashes his
car in the snow and then one of his like, really big fans finds him and kind of
keeps him hostage until he continues to write another novel for this series. And
then I also picked up The Long Walk by Stephen King. This one is about, I think,
it's about these kids who are in like a juvenile detention center and they have
to walk for their freedom, essentially, and they have to keep a certain pace and
if they fall behind the end up getting killed and I guess the last person
standing I think gets their freedom or something along those lines. This one is
very intriguing to me and I'm very interested to read this sometime soon. I
then received my October Book of the Month box and in this box I received
Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstance by Ruth Emmie Lang. I'm gonna read the
synopsises, synopsis, synopsi? (laughs) of these books cuz I'm not entirely sure
what they were. "Orphaned, raised by wolves, and the proud owner of a horned pig
named Merlin, Waylen Grey knew he wasn't like other people, but when he
single-handedly stopped that tornado on a stormy Christmas day in Oklahoma, he
realized just how different he actually was." That was very interesting to me and
I definitely want to check this out. There's, of course, more to the synopsis
than that, but that just got me hooked and I'm very intrigued. This is very
magical realism and I'm into that. The next one I got in this box was something
that lots of people all around the world have already been hyping up but that is
The Power by Naomi Alderman. This is, from what I know, about women who through time
kind of developed this power to I think electrocute men and then all of a sudden
there's like a shift in power. Like women now hold the power in the world. So
I'm very intrigued by this. So I cannot wait to get to it. And the last book that
I got in the October Book of the Month box was The Impossible Fortress by Jason
Rekulak. I think that's how you say his name. This is a video game centered
like romance, contemporary romance, from what I know which I'm very intrigued by.
I think this is gonna be a really fun read so I cannot wait to get this one as
well. I then found on a kindle daily deal Miles Morales: Spider-Man by Jason
Reynolds and I wanted to snap it up immediately. So I did I saw that book in
Barnes & Noble when I went on the trip in September to Barnes & Noble, but I
didn't pick it up there, but when I saw it on the kindle deal I just like
snapped it up. I'm very excited to get to it. I also picked up another audio book
and this one is Member of the Family by Dianne Lake. I'm currently
listening to this and this is about Dianne Lake - it's a memoir - her time with
Charles Manson. She was one of like his "girls". Like he was she was a member of
the family between the ages of 14 and 16 and then afterwards she helped put him
in jail. It's been very intriguing so far I'm about halfway done and it's just
very interesting how she found her way into being part of the family and I'm
interested to see what her experience is like during her time there and how she
gets out. I then got my November Book of the Month box and in my November box I
received Artemis by Andy Weir. I was very excited when this was an option for Book
of the Month. This is Andy Weir's second novel. I read
The Martian earlier this year and absolutely loved it I'm so I'm excited
to see what his follow-up novel is all about. From what I know this is about a
woman who is on the moon. So I don't know how different from the Martian it's
going to be but I'm excited to get into this and see what it's all about.
The next one I picked up was The Rules of Magic by Alice Hoffman. "For the Owens
family, love is a curse that began in the 1600s when Maria Owens was accused of
witchery for loving the wrong man. Hundreds of years later in New York City,
at the cusp of the 60s when the whole world is about to change,
Susannah Owens knows that her three children are dangerously unique.
Difficult Frannie with skin as pale milk and blood red hair; shy and
beautiful Jett who can read other people's thoughts; and charismatic
Vincent who began looking for trouble on the day he could walk. From the start,
Suzanna sets down the rules for her children: no walking in the moonlight, no red shoes
no wearing black, no cats, no crows, no candles, no books about magic, and most
importantly, never, ever fall in love. But her children will never adhere to the
rules and all three are desperate to uncover who they really are
when they visit their aunt Isabelle in the small Massachusetts town where the
Owens family has been blamed for everything that has ever gone wrong, they
begin to understand the truth of who they are. The siblings discovered there
are family secrets to uncover as well as secrets they have kept hidden from each
other. When they move to 44 Greenwich Avenue in New York City,
each begins a risky journey as they tried to escape the family curse." I've
heard good things about Alice Hoffman's writing. I'm excited to get to this.
This premise, again, seems very intriguing, and I'm sure this is
something that I will enjoy. And the last book that I got in my November box was a
suggestion from Becky at Beck's Books. During my Halloween live show a lot of
us were kind of giving recommendations on horror/thrillers that we really enjoy
and this is one that she suggested. It's Behind Her Eyes by Sarah Pinborough.
Honestly I don't really know much about it, but it was a suggestion from Becky
and I really trust her opinions on books. She said this is a great thriller so I
can't wait to get to this one as well. And then the last of the physical books
that I picked up this fall was Turtles All the Way Down by John Green. I did
order a signed copy and I was really excited to find this out, but I got one
of his DFTBA signatures which, you know, weren't in every book. I think some of
the books had DTFBA, some of the books have like Turtles drawn in them. So I felt
very lucky to get a DFTBA one. I have high hopes for this one. I've been
hearing really positive things, so hopefully I agree
with all the positive hype that this one has been getting. I then went on a Kindle
buying kick. I think I, again, had vacation in mind. I didn't want to bring a ton of
physical books with me so I bought quite a few Kindle books. So I'm gonna whip
right through those as well. The first one I got is The Shining by Stephen King.
I'm going to be doing a group read of this with Anita, Michael, and Becky in
December. I've always heard this is one of the scariest books of all time and I
just I can't wait. I can't wait to be scared. The next book I got was To All
the Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han. I've heard that this is a wonderful
contemporary. All I hear is positive things about this trilogy. So I decided to give
it a shot. Next one I got was Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty. This one is going
to be such a good beach read. It's like a mystery, it's a contemporary, it's - I've
heard nothing but great things and I really do want to watch the HBO series
but I wanted to read the book first. So I'm excited to it check that out. The
next book I got was The Little Book of Hygge by - forgive me if I butcher this
name but I think it's Meik Wiking or Wiking. Earlier
this year I read The Year of Living Danishly and became very intrigued
with Danish culture and hygge is just kind of like the art of being cozy and
I'm just so into that idea and especially with the winter months coming
up I feel like it's going to be perfect to read this book and kind of integrate
some cozy techniques into my life. The next kindle book I got was The Good Girl
by Mary Kubica. This was a kindle daily deal and I've heard it's a great
thriller. I honestly don't know too much about it but it was on sale and I
figured having a good thriller on my kindle while I'm on vacation will be
good to have. And then I got another horror/thriller called A Head Full of
Ghosts by Paul Tremblay. Again, don't know too much about it, but want some more
horror/thriller on my Kindle so I can just read it whenever I feel like I want
to be scared. Anyway, that is it for my fall book haul. I'm not even gonna
attempt to hold these up for you guys right now, but I hope you guys enjoyed
this video. If you did please leave a big thumbs up. Subscribe if you haven't
already. I do try to make a new video each and every week and I will see you
guys again very soon. Bye!
