Today we're going to look at two verses
from the book of Philippians.
This is from Philippians chapter 2.
It says,
Chances are if you're in high school
you're in some kind of competition.
If you're in sports alone, there's 8 million high schoolers
that compete every single year.
But maybe it's not a sport,
maybe it's band or maybe it's academics.
You're really trying to be competitive.
So the apostle Paul is telling us
that we should not do things out of vain conceit.
What does that look like?
Well, competition isn't exactly for everyone.
Laird Hamilton, a legendary surfer
and some consider one of the best athletes in the world,
has never competed in a judged surfing competition.
Now it's partly because he says
surfing is an art that should not be judged.
It's partly because by his own admission
he says he's so competitive
that he doesn't think he could handle losing.
There's a phrase that says
the creative person finds satisfaction
in doing their very best, in seeing the results.
The competitive person
finds satisfaction in delivering a loss to someone else.
So which are you?
The apostle Paul says this,
"Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit,
but in humility consider others better than yourself."
What does it look like in competition?
I'm sure your team wants to win the big game,
but my guess is it looks like a respect for the game
and a respect for the rules, a respect for your teammates,
but even in humility a respect for your opponents.
Your desire is not to just squish people down,
but God has made you different
and a different perspective that says
I can enjoy the game, go compete,
but do it in a way that brings light to God
and the glory is not just for you.
The glory isn't for you really at all.
This glory is for our Savior
who lived and died perfectly
so that we can do great things like compete.
Let's pray.
Heavenly Father, we are so thankful that
you have given us healthy competition.
Help us to be true sports men and women
as we seek to do our best and find joy in accomplishment
rather than relishing the defeat of others.
In Jesus' name who accomplished our salvation
through His perfect performance, Amen.
