Hi guys. I'm gonna give this another shot because I tried to do this a couple of
days ago, after I had had about zero hours sleep and had literally just got
off a plane and it wasn't, it wasn't pretty. If I can salvage any clips from
that, I will insert them around here. I'm not entirely sure whether that is even
possible. I am in France right now. I am on holiday with my family. My mum, my
dad and my brother. And they are out getting something to eat but I wanted to just stay back and
read because I'm still absolutely exhausted. So I thought I could talk a
little bit now and I just thought I would vlog this holiday. Attempt to. Whether this
is ever gonna this is the light of day, who knows because this is me and I try to do
things sometimes and it doesn't really work out. I've never vlogged in any kind
of sense, other than just sitting down and talking about things in front of a
camera and I don't know this feels really, really different and really weird
and I'm not entirely sure how I feel about it. I can't for the life with me find anywhere good
to sit. So I'm currently sitting by window it's also 10 to 8, so that is why
it is slightly dark. And I am currently so paranoid that I'm thinking about not doing this right now
because I'm just certain someone is staring at me from a window. I can't see anyone but I've
persuaded myself that it's happening. Anyway what was I gonna say, yes, anyway.
I thought I'd vlog some of it. I'm not entirely sure how this is gonna work.
I might just kind of add in some clips here and there whilst we are out and about.
I also thought I would just vlog my reading because I have been in such a
huge reading slump recently and I'm hoping that whilst I am away, I may be
able to read something, anything. Literally anything would be great
because I feel like I haven't really thoroughly enjoyed reading for a little
while. I've enjoyed books but I haven't enjoyed the experience of
reading. I'm hoping that whilst I'm on holiday I might be able to read a little
bit more because I'm thinking if I can finally kind of just relax I think
that is what I need to do and I think that is hopefully fingers crossed what
will help me read some more. But as I said I tried to this a couple of days
ago but I'd literally just got off the plane but I did talk a little bit about
what I'm reading at the moment, so I'll put that in here. I'm currently buddy
reading 'Invictus' by Ryan Graudin which is an ARC I got from YALC with Maddie and Bea,
Carys and Lily. And this is like a time travel,
historical fiction type thing and then I also just started reading
'A Quiet Kind of Thunder' by Sara Barnard. I've only carried on with Invictus but
I've got a little bit better in that. I'm just not very good at reading two
books in one go. So I think I'm just gonna finish 'Invictus' and then get onto
'A Quiet Kind of Thunder'. I think I only have about a 100 pages left of 'Invictus'.
I'm on page 325 and as I've said, I don't have much left.
I've been zooming through it. Which is kind of amazing for me because as I said
I haven't been reading a lot and also yes, my 'Cars 2' postcard
is my bookmark because cars is my favourite. I'm really enjoying this so far.
It's kind of reminding me a little bit of 'Guardians of the Galaxy'. I think I'm a
little bit further than I meant to be in the buddy read because I couldn't really
stop reading it. Which is really nice because I haven't really felt that with
a book for quite a while. That is it for right now, I don't really have anything
more to say and I think if I carry on talking I'm just gonna carry on talking
and it's not gonna make any sense and I don't think I've really made much sense
anyway and I am still so convinced that someone is staring at me.
So I'm gonna go but hopefully I will catch up and do this a little bit later.
If not, this has been a total failure but whatever it is, it's happened. So yeah I'm
just gonna go. How do people end these kinds of clips? So I didn't film anything
yesterday because we essentially spent the entire day exploring and kind of
driving around the area that we are staying in. We went to the village in
which the Chateau that Picasso is buried in, is in. Which was really interesting
and absolutely gorgeous and the guy definitely had some money but after that
we just kind of came back and got some food. I just did some reading and we just
kind of chilled at at home. But since I am now currently home on my own, I thought I would
update you with my reading because I just finished 'Invictus' by Ryan Graudin
and absolutely loved it. I wasn't really expecting to love it as much as I did.
Not because I didn't think I would like it. I just I'm not sure I think it's
because I don't really read a lot of sci-fi and this definitely was sci-fi.
So it was just very pleasantly surprising. It had a very 'Guardians of the Galaxy' vibe to it.
If 'Guardians of the Galaxy' had been about time-traveling teenagers. It was just
brilliant. I loved it. It read so quickly, it was so easy to read and I just flew through it.
Which was so refreshing because as I said before, I haven't done that for a
very long time. So I feel as though I've started off my reading holiday pretty
strongly with that. So I think I'm gonna give that probably about a 4.5 but now
I'm just gonna continue with 'A Quiet Kind of Thunder' by Sara Barnard. I'm excited
to get back into this because I really enjoyed what I had read of it.
So yeah, I think I'm just gonna go and read for a little bit until my family come
back and then I think we may go out this evening and just have a little wander
around. So if I manage to get some footage from that I will put that in
some time around now but yeah I will hopefully, fingers crossed, manage to do
this again tomorrow at some point.
Okay, I've put you in a cupboard and I'm currently standing on two books because
I can't keep sitting on the kitchen floor but also I'm too small to make
this work if I don't. So I'm probably committing some kind of sin right now
but oh well. Yesterday, oh, yesterday I didn't really do much until the evening,
when we ended up going out for a drink in this little square and there was
this band playing and they were playing KT Tunstall and things like that. Which was
really, really great because weirdly enough KT Tunstall is kind of like the
soundtrack of so many of my family's holidays because she was my mum's
favorite singer at one point and we just had her CD on loop because it was probably
one of the only CD's we owned. But whilst they were playing one of her songs, this
couple came and started dancing along to them but not just dancing, they were
actually dancing. And I am so jealous because although they were stunning in
the dancing and also the way they looked, everything about it was just gorgeous.
I'm just so jealous because I have not an ounce,
not one single drop of talent when it comes to dancing and all they made me
want to do is become a dancer. But whilst I was filming the band playing, I did also
manage to catch some of their dance I think as well. So I will put a clip in
now if I can. I'm not entirely sure how it's gonna come out because it was very
dark and my camera isn't great and they were quite far away but I'm keeping my
fingers crossed that something will come out. And then I finished 'A Quiet Kind of Thunder'
by Sara Barnard and I've really really enjoyed this. It had a really great
balance between the cute fluffiness and also discussing mental illness because the
main character in this had anxiety and selective mutism and I really, really
enjoyed the representation of that in this. And I'm going to have to have a look
and see if I can find an own voices review of it regarding the deaf
representation in it because the love interest was deaf but without any sort
of prior knowledge to it, I really enjoyed reading about that because I
really liked the fact that that was sign language in it and just discussion about
being deaf and having a relationship with someone is that is deaf when you
aren't. It was a really, really lovely read. I flew through it and I really
enjoyed it and I think I'm gonna end up giving it a 4.5 out of 5 stars but right
now I'm gonna go up onto the roof and get some reading done.
Because despite the fact that I've been in France for nearly a week, now I'm
still resembling someone that could be related to Edward Cullen. Which is my
normal state but considering I have been in the South of France for nearly a week,
that should have changed by now hopefully because I do look like I'm 300
years dead. But I am going to go and read on the roof. If I can manage to not
get distracted because I keep getting super distracted whenever I go up there
because there are so many pigeons and they keep talking to each other and it's
just really interesting. I don't know. Who gets distracted by pigeons. Anyway I'm going to
go up there and try and get some reading done and finally after so many years of
saying that I will do start 'Pride and Prejudice' by Jane Austen because I am
incredibly intrigued by this and I said on this holiday, no matter what, I had to
read this book and I've already been here nearly a week and I haven't picked
it up yet but I'm really intrigued to see how I'm going to do with this
because the last two books I've read have been very easy comfortable reads
and I'm assuming this is gonna be a little bit harder and a little bit tough
to get used to at least but I'm very intrigued. I don't really know too much
about it at all because I haven't watched the movies or the TV shows or ever read it
before and I've somehow managed to not really find out what this book is about.
So I'm very, very excited about this and I'm going to go up onto the roof now and
try and start it and see how it goes.
It's the next day and I'm about ten chapters into 'Pride and Prejudice' and I'm
enjoying it but I'm gonna be honest, I am definitely struggling a little bit with
it and I think that is basically purely because I am not used to the
language or the writing style at all. So I've put a poll onto Twitter and
asked whether I should read the book first or watch the movie or TV show
first. Which I feel like a little bit of a fraud for doing but I'm thinking that
maybe being initially familiar with the story might help me kind of get into it
a little bit more and understand it a bit more. Just because it is taking me a very
very little time read. So I am going to continue and read a little bit more now
and just see whether I get used to the writing and also I'm just gonna wait and
see what more people say on the tweet and on the poll and things like that.
Poll update. I've had a lot of people now recommending to me 'The Lizzie Bennett Diaries'
on YouTube. So what I think I'm gonna do is continue reading this today and just
see how far I can get in it and then this evening, I'm gonna catch up on 'The
Lizzie Bennet Diaries' and watch up until the point that I am in the book. I am really
enjoying the characters and I am really liking the plot, it's just so tiring
because it is definitely quite a bit of work for me but I've had a lot of people
telling me how fantastic that is, especially since it is set in a
modern day setting. So it doesn't really spoil anything but it definitely gives
you a feel of the different characters and things like that. So that is what I'm gonna do and I'm
going to continue reading this now. I'm back on the books and you're back in the cupboard because I just got
a splinter, about that big in my foot and I now hate the outdoors and I knew that there was a
good reason why I don't trust it. So I'm never going out there again but I am now
on page 127 in this edition of 'Pride and Prejudice' and I have just read
the best passage I think I've read in a book at a very long time and it made
me laugh a lot. Which makes me feel kind of great because it means that I think I'm
finally getting used to the writing because I'm actually getting it.
following along and I'm understanding what's going on. So I'm slightly proud
of myself right now. I'm not gonna use any names because I don't want to spoil
it for anyone, in case they haven't watched it or haven't read it.
Basically it's this chapter where Lizzie Bennet the main character in it, whose name I
will use. A guy asks her to marry him and she's like nah no thanks
and he goes oh no I know you mean yes because I've been told
so many times that people always refuse the first proposal and sometimes second
and third but that's only because basically you want attention and more
admiration. She's just like, no I just I don't to marry you. So then he goes off
and is essentially like, yeah well you'll never get any better than me. I'm rich. I've
got this amazing house. I've got so much money. I've got this old lady looking
after me. You're really poor, so you'll be lucky if anyone marries you if it's
not me and she's just like, okay bye and walks off to her dad really cooly and
it's just the best thing ever and he just now feels like a bachelorette
contestant and I'm absolutely loving it and it's just one of my favourite things
I've read in a very long time. So that's my little update. I feel like I was
reading a weird 1800s version of 'The Bachelorette'. So I'm enjoying it.
Also I am now very aware that none of that probably made any sense whatsoever.
It's been a couple of days since I last updated you but I am now officially
halfway through 'Pride and Prejudice' and I haven't watched the movie, nor have I
watched the TV show but I have been watching 'The Lizzie Bennet Diaries' on
YouTube. I'm really enjoying that, although there are so many episodes that
I'm not even I think about four chapters in yet. I didn't read too much of this
yesterday as we were out for most of the day
and I didn't bring my book because I thought it was going to be a very short
car journey, so I didn't wanna read in the car. It turns out we were in a traffic
jam for about two hours. So I ended up reading a novella that I had downloaded
on my phone and I just stumbled across on Kindle. Which was 'Plain Vanilla'
by Ines Bautista-Yao. I'm so, so sorry that I've probably pronounced their name
wrong but that is the cover of it and I absolutely loved it. It was so cute.
It was set in Manila and it was basically about this girl who decides to do a
bunch of dares after a guy calls her boring.
I loved all of the characters, I loved all the relationships and I just
finished it kind of wishing that it had been a full length novel. So that I ended
up giving it four out of five stars. It was just a really, really cute summery
fun read. Now I'm currently deciding what to read because I'm going home
tomorrow and I don't want to read this on the plane because I know I won't be
able to fully focus on it and I'm sure I'll end up reading a bunch of pages and
have to reread it. I'm currently deciding out of two other books. 'Love & Gelato'
by Jenna Evans Welch and 'If Birds Fly Back' by Carlie Sorosiak. I think I might
read a chapter of each now and try and get into one of them this evening, so that I don't
end up starting a book on the plane. I do think I might go for this one but we shall see.
Okay, I have you very, very precariously balancing on a curved roof tile. So if you fall
that way, the camera's the goner but I think I've decided that I'm going to
pick up 'Love & Gelato' by Jenna Evans Welch because I'm so excited about this.
So I don't really want to start it now and start it on the plane because I'm
not entirely sure how well I will be able to get into it and also this seems
like it's gonna be incredibly easy read. Then tomorrow I'm going home and I'm so
gutted about it because I just don't want to go back to the grey sky. I don't
even mind so much not being on holiday. I just want the sunshine but the upside is
that I get to see my dogs again, which I'm so happy about. Oh my goodness. Literally
you will fall down there, so this is really not the best plan I've had. Oh this is just a mess. I start talking
about the dogs and I nearly lose my camera. Anyway, what I was saying was I get to
see my dogs tomorrow, for the first time in 10 days, which I am so, so happy about
because I've missed them so much. I have pined over my dog for this entire holiday.
I am now gonna go and start this or maybe possibly watch a little bit
more of 'The Lizzie Bennet Diaries' before we have to wake up super early again
to get the plane home tomorrow.
I am home. I am officially back from France and I thought I would just do one
last update, as I finished 'Love & Gelato' whilst travelling back. I enjoyed this.
I didn't love it. It was just a very mediocre read for me. I think I'm going to
give it a 3 out of 5 stars but I read this so quickly. I think I read two
or three chapters before we left and then I just finished the last two
chapters as we got back but the rest of it I read traveling to the airport,
whilst at the airport, on the plane and traveling back home. I can't remember the
last time that I finished a book in a day, so this was definitely the perfect
book for me to have read because it was very easy, very quick and I really didn't
need to concentrate too much on it because it was pretty simple but this
officially concludes my holiday reading. So I managed to finish this, 'A Quiet Kind of Thunder',
'Invictus' and I am so, so close to finally finishing 'Pride and Prejudice'.
So I'm really happy with what I managed to read actually. I think I've read more
this holiday and enjoyed reading more this holiday than I have done for the
past couple of months. I was also wondering whether this, as in reading vlogs,
is something you would like me to do more of and something you would enjoy,
if you did like this. If you didn't I won't do it again but if you did do let
me know so that I can consider doing it again. This vlog probably isn't even
interesting in itself and my usual day-to-day life isn't even 1% as
interesting as my past couple of weeks have been. So it would literally just be me
updating you on what I'm reading and maybe what I'm watching, TV wise and
movie wise and things like that. I really enjoyed doing it. So yeah do let
me know if this is something you would like me to do more of. I'm not sure
whether I would do it monthly or weekly or fortnightly or something like that.
Now I'm just gonna go and cuddle my dogs because I've missed them so much
and I can't leave them alone and I'm just going to pretend and convince myself
that it isn't extremely grey and pouring that rain outside. I hope you've had a
fantastic past couple of weeks and you've read some really great books and
I would absolutely love to know what you have been reading over the past couple
of weeks and yeah that is it, bye!

Draw the bats, save the bats. - Duration: 8:34.
hello friends this is Kat from MeowMeowKapow and today we are gonna go a bit batty.
Sometimes you just kind of need to do something purely for the fun of it
like squishing some play-doh between your fingers or ripping something up
into a zillion tiny pieces and throwing them like so much joyful confetti.
It's kind of okay to take time to do something purely just because YOU need to do it.
This is what I do to relax. Each one of the bats and this batty rainbow
started out the exact same way: I taped a watercolor trading card to my desk,
used a big Brush to wet the entire surface so the paint will bloom and flow
and just kind of randomly added scribbles and blobs... sometimes even
splashes of whatever colors I had chosen. most of the paints I used were
Daniel Smith watercolors, but all of the materials i used will be listed in the
doobly-doo down below. From here it's just a matter of finding a reference
photo that I like and drawing it directly on the paper with black and
white pen. This seems like it would be stressful but it was oddly freeing. All
six were done in exactly the same method, each taking only about an hour from
start to finish which is kind of incredible! I usually describe myself as
one of the slowest artists and something like this, if I were to have planned it,
to do pencil ahead of time I probably would have taken hours and hours so it
was really nice to just let go and be free about this. Which i think is what I
needed. It's really important to make sure that you find time for yourself to
stress relieve because it's kind of a big scary crazy world out there; we all
need something to keep us sane.
So.... while I draw the bats, let's talk about them.
Bats are probably some of my favorite creatures, especially because-depending
on the species-they really just look like tiny flying cats and dogs. I mean,
who doesn't love an adorable kitten or puppy?! For a very small mammal they live
incredibly long lives; up to maybe about 30 years, sometimes more. Rats really only
live about two be... two? and they're pretty much the same size.
Hedgehogs would be lucky to make it to four and cats and dogs, which again, who
doesn't love them... they're known to live to about their 20s. With bats living so
long and with their primary food source being bugs (like mosquitoes up to 1200
in just an hour honestly, which is crazy!) a couple of these little cuties around
your next barbecue instead of those little citronella candles would be a
blessing. Unfortunately, bat populations in the US and Canada are suffering
greatly right now and many different species are in danger of going extinct.
A plague called white noise syndrome is infecting thousands of bats during their
hibernation cycles and, among other things, causing them to starve to death.
Without bats, who will protect us at our barbecues? I know that most people either
don't think about bats that much or actively don't care for them but they
really are an important part of our ecosystem. Their guano is one of the best
and most potent fertilizers...on the whole planet! They can help protect your
neighborhood or garden from pests, and it is possible that studying the saliva of
vampire bats actually may help lead to the breakthrough we need for how to
prevent strokes and how to treat heart conditions, which is amazing! So, what can
you do to keep our little flying puppies safe? If you or someone you know comes
across a bat in distress, please don't call pest control, don't call Animal
Services call a local bat rescuer immediately at batworld.org the link
for that will also be down on the doobly-doo. If you want to create a safe
place at home for your local bat population you can put up a bat box at
your house, which is basically just an artificial roost that they can move into.
it'll help protect the bat family and you'll reap the benefits of their presence.
If you have a pool, keep it covered when it's not in use since bats
can and DO drown while trying to swoop down for a drink. They can swim, that's
not a problem, but if there is no shore or gentle slope for them to easily climb
up they'll be unable to get out. And if you really want to get involved, sponsor
or adopt a bat from a bat rescue organization like bat world sanctuary or
bat conservation international. you can also like and share this video to help
spread awareness for these sweet and helpful little creatures.
As you can see here I'm almost done the whole rainbow, which is both sad and
happy for me. All that I have left to do is the blue, and I kind of dragged my
feet on it because I didn't want this to end. I ended up doing a couple of extra
projects in-between which were poster all on my Instagram. I don't really have
good advice for how to continue a project when you start to procrastinate
about it, if you have any ideas like tips about how to maybe make bargains
with yourself or keep yourself motivated, especially if you're sad that
something's ending (which i think is uncommon)
please share your advice, I'd love it.
Well it looks like we've come to the end of this piece and here comes my favorite
part-getting to take off the tape! You'll notice that I'm peeling off the tape at
a 90 degree angle and a good tip for when you're peeling off tape is to do
that because it's less likely to catch the paper underneath and rip it up. So if
you're trying to get a nice smooth tape removal, do that. And it's okay if you
have to switch directions because maybe one direction is causing the tape to not
go as smoothly or maybe catch-totally fine if you switch it up, you'll even see
that I did it too.
if you want a print of all six of these bats check out my shop in the doobly-doo.
They will be available both individually and as a complete set. Now, what's your
favorite misunderstood animal and how can we help to protect it? Comment down
below.
Thank you so much for watching, I really appreciate all of your support and all
of your attention. And because YouTube will collapse in a blackhole if I don't
say it please, remember to Like and subscribe.
Till I see you again, I wish you nothing but peace love and happiness. Bye! <3

Magnet recognition - LIVE Interview - Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center - Duration: 8:55.
From Penn State Health, thanks for tuning into this Facebook Live video about
Magnet recognition. I'm Scott Gilbert. You might have heard the news recently that
Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center received it's third
consecutive Magnet designation. That's deemed to be the highest national honor
for nursing excellence. Less than twelve percent of registered hospitals in the
U.S. have earned that. Now. here today to tell us a bit about, why it is such an
important designation are Stephanie Wachter and Jared Dougherty. They're both
staff nurses here at the Medical Center. Thanks for being here today guys. Let's
talk a bit about what Magnet recognition does signify. Tell me a bit about that.
Well Magnet recognition is the highest honor for nursing staffs that achieve in
the nation. What it signifies is that the nurses physicians and allied health
professionals at the hospital work together to create excellent patient
care outcomes through a series of processes that they've designed
themselves. And I think the institution has really put this at the forefront
over the past few years. When we look at our strategic imperatives and the vision
for not just nursing as the profession but the organization as a
whole to really put the patient at the center
of that interaction. And so I'm curious since you're both staff nurses you have
a lot of use a lot of experience you know working directly with our patients,
what does it mean, first of all, for you as staff members to be able to say as
nurses we work for a magnet recognized institution? For me, it just kind of
signifies that the level to which I practice and the level to which my
colleagues practice is something that can achieve those high quality patient
outcomes and that we really do provide excellent care for our patients at this
facility. How about for you Stephanie? Well for me, it's really more about my
nursing practice being supported in many ways at the Med Center. Whether it's the
days that I engage in direct patient care or if I'm involving myself in a
more professional development opportunities such as going back to
school or doing community outreach or perhaps engaging in direct Magnet
activities. Like providing counsel work for our staff nurses as well. And so
people watching this, like I said upfront, I've probably heard the term Magnet
recognized but they may wonder what it means for them as patients. Can you talk
a bit about that? What's the significance? What can a patient expect at a
Magnet recognized hospital? Well patients simply need to know that a Magnet
organization is proven to have excellent patient care outcomes through
collaboration among nurses, physicians, administrators and leaders and other
allied health professionals that work at the hospital. So the patients that come
to our hospital are getting the best care. The nurses that provide that care
have a voice in how they provide it and it's really proven to be the best
thinking process around providing nursing care. That's how it translates
for patients then Jarad? Yeah, I think as a patient, you know being in that
vulnerable position of being in the hospital and having to kind of have
somebody else being responsible for your care, it gives them a little bit of ease
of mind knowing that you're gonna have a team really collaborating to keep you at
the forefront. You're watching a Facebook live interview from Penn State Health
Milton Hershey Medical Center; I'm Scott Gilbert. I'm joined by
Stephanie Wachter and Jared Dougherty, they're both staff nurses here. We're talking
about Magnet recognition and what that means. What does that tell us about our
nurses here at the Medical Center? I do know this is a very long and involved
process to go for this designation and the medical center earned its first
Magnet designation in 2007, again in 2012, again in 2017. And in each time, there's
quite a process to go through. Walk me through some of the basic parts of that
process. Involves what, writing, site visits, everything in between? Yes, so
there's actually a team that gets together to write the Magnet document.
Thousands and thousands of pages of information goes into writing this
Magnet document and a whole host of individuals throughout the organization
kind of get together and collaborate to showcase the examples of excellent
patient care that we provide here at the organization. So that then goes on to a
team of Magnet surveyors who will review that. And then kind of get back to us on
our Magnet program director about a site visit date. And once the site visit date
is here, it's really all about celebrating nursing and about
celebrating the excellent patient outcomes that we have
and the excellent environment that we work in. What is it like to have that
site visit when you get to kind of show off what you do? Well, the site visit is
really like the Superbowl of nursing. For me as a staff nurse. The surveyors say
they're here to amplify and clarify the work that the nurses do and I think
that's a really great way to phrase it. It's important during the site visit
that the information that was typed in black and white on the page, really comes
to life so that the American Nurses Credentialing Center representatives can
really see that we live and breathe the Magnet mission each day here at Hershey.
They want to make sure it's not just something you write down, it's something you actually live?
Absolutely! The American Nurses Credentialing Center, that's the ANCC,
they're the ones who designate hospitals, give out the Magnet
designation. They singled out a Hershey Medical Center for a few particular
initiatives and areas. Can you tell me about some of those? Yes, so one of the
areas was in particular the way that nurses and physicians and other allied
health professionals collaborate. So they actually on the phone call that we
received from them recognized one of our units specifically for their initiatives
in driving forth positive patient outcomes and really working together as
a team to achieve those outcomes. Also, community outreach was recognized?
Exactly! The ANCC did recognize our strong community outreach department and
I've had the blessings to be able to work with the director of community
outreach here at Hershey to kind of participate in some of those programs as
well. They include providing patient education in the community at places
like the farmers market here in Hershey or at food pantries throughout Central
Pennsylvania. It's an opportunity for me as a nurse to get to know patients
before they become a patient so that I understand what their home life is like,
so that the interventions we provide as nurses here are easily translated to
things that we can do at home for them. We welcome your questions for Jared and
Stephanie. They're both staff nurses here at Penn State Health Milton Hershey
Medical Center. Feel free to put your questions in the comment field on this
Facebook post and we can certainly pose those questions to them about Magnet
recognition here at Hershey Medical Center.
Major news that was just shared recently and we're glad to have them helping us
share it here as well. Now, 76 percent of the nurses here at the Medical Center
have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. A BSN degree or higher.
Why is that important? I know both of you have your
BSNs. Tell me a bit about why that's important to you? I think it really just
validates the fact that the research shows that baccalaureate prepared nurses
or higher really do achieve those great patient
outcomes that we strive for here at Hershey and they have the knowledge to
kind of put that text that they read in in their classes and their undergraduate
studies or the graduate studies really into practice and make it come to life
in the patient care setting. For you Stephanie? I'll give an example, so one of the cornerstones of a
bachelor's degree in nursing is understanding how to implement research
into practice. And on the Cancer Institute where I work, we know that
patients can sometimes get central line infections and we've created multiple
nurse driven interventions to ensure that our patients don't receive central
line associated infections when they come to us. Just because we have the
knowledge base and understanding of current practices and best evidence to
implement for our patients here every day. Fantastic! I think you've answered
all my questions anything else that you guys would like to add about Magnet
designation? Of why it's important to a hospital like Hershey Medical Center?
I think the biggest take-home message about working at a Magnet hospital is
that the nurses voices are heard. From the patient side through the
interdisciplinary teams on the unit level, all the way up through senior
leadership and that the nurses who are the bread and butter workers at the
hospital providing that direct patient care really are listened to and have
direct decision-making capacity with regard to the care that they provide.
Any closing thoughts, Jarad? No. I mean, I I'm just so fortunate to be able to have a facility
like Hershey in my back yard and really be able to practice to the fullest of my
extent that I can as a registered nurse here. We're gonna share a story about the
Magnet designation we'll share that in the comment field below this post.
We'll also share a link to a recent video that we produced with bunch of nurses here at
the medical center, sharing their thoughts and what this Magnet
designation means. Jared, Stephanie, thanks so much for joining me today. I appreciate it.
And thank you for watching this Facebook live interview from Penn State Health
Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.

HOW FORD CLASS COMPARES AGAINST QUEEN ELIZABETH CLASS? - Duration: 7:54.
Ford class super-carriers are being built to replace some of the United States Navy's
existing Nimitz-class carriers from 2017.
The first ship of this class is GERALD R. FORD.
The ships of this class are expected to be in service with the US Navy till 2065.
The QUEEN ELIZABETH class is a class of two aircraft carriers of the United Kingdom's
Royal Navy.
The first, HMS Queen Elizabeth has commissioning planned for late 2017,and an initial operating
capability expected in 2018.
The second, HMS Prince of Wales, is scheduled for commissioning in 2020.
Both of these represent the some of the best engineering of our times.
In this video, Defense Updates compares the two carriers on the basis of 5 important parameters
& draws an unbiased conclusion
So, lets get started.
In May 1997, the newly elected Labour government of UK launched the Strategic Defense Review
which re-evaluated every weapon system (active or in procurement) with the exception of the
Eurofighter Typhoon and the Vanguard-class ballistic missile submarines.
One of the important outcomes of the report was that the government intended to replace
the current carrier force with two larger vessels capable of deploying up to 50 aircraft,
including helicopters.
This decision ultimately led to the development of Queen Elizabeth class carrier.
The FORD class aircraft carriers were designed to be improvements on previous U.S. aircraft
carriers, in particular the Nimitz class.
The carriers have been envisaged to be more efficient and future proof with capability
to integrate most modern technologies.
Like all 10 Nimitz-class aircraft carriers, Gerald R. Ford is constructed at Newport News
Shipbuilding Company, Virginia, in the largest dry-dock in the western hemisphere.
Ford-class displaces about 100,000 tons and spans 337 meters long, where as Queen Elizabeth-class
displaces 70,000 tons and has a length of 280 meters.
The numbers bear out the fact that the both are super carriers but Ford is significantly larger.
Size has undeniable impact on the capability of any aircraft carrier as it determines the
number of aircrafts that it can operate.
Queen Elizabeth-air wing of 50 fighters falls well short of Ford class capability to hold
over 70 jets.
It can be easily inferred that Ford has a distinct advantage over Queen Elizabeth in this parameter
Queen Elizabeth-class has an engine configuration as follows:
2 × Rolls-Royce Marine Trent MT30, 36 MW (48,000 hp) gas turbine engine
4 × Wärtsilä 38, 11.6 MW (15,600 hp) marine diesel engines
It has a speed in excess of 26 knots (48 km/h; 30 mph) and range of 10,000 nautical miles
Ford-class carrier has 2 Bechtel A1B nuclear reactors are installed.
Each one these are capable of producing 300 MW of electricity
Ford has maximum speed of over 30 knots (56 km/h.) and practically unlimited rang as it
is capable of operating continuously for over 20 years without refueling.
The non-nuclear propulsion limits the Queen Elizabeth-class range.
Clearly Ford class has huge advantage in terms of propulsion technology, and Queen Elizabeth
is no match for it in this category.
The Queen Elizabeth will have F-35B Lightning II as the fighter aircraft.
It will also have the Chinook, Apache AH64, Merlin HM2 and HC4, Wildcat AH1 and HMA2 and
Merlin Crowsnest AEW
The Ford class will embark F-35C Lightning II and F 18 Super Hornets as fighter aircrafts.
It will also carry EA-18G Growler electronic attack jets, E-2D Hawkeye airborne early-warning
and control aircraft, and C-2 Greyhound carrier onboard delivery (COD) planes.
Apart from these MH-60S Seahawk helicopters will be also present.
The Ford has better combination of fighters with versatile F 18 Super Hornets being onboard
apart from stealthy F 35s, which are present in both.
Also it has EA-18G Growler which is very important in modern combat scenarios as well as own
AEW&C aircraft in the form of E-2D Hawkeye.
Advantage goes to Ford class in this parameter.
Aircraft carriers are very costly and must be designed to have long service lives.
For the carrier to be effective throughout the service life, it has to be enhanced with
new technologies.
One of important constraints in incorporating new technologies is the onboard power availability.
The total power available for Queen Elizabeth class is around 115 MW.
One of the main reasons for America to build Ford class was to have more onboard power.
Ford class has in total 600 MW of electricity, triple the 200 MW Nimitz-class and more than
5 times that of Queen Elizabeth class.
The huge power supply provides legroom, required for future expansions like inducting Laser
Guns and Electromagnetic Rail Guns.
As evident Ford has huge advantage in this regards.
The cost of each of Queen Elizabeth class is $ 4.5 billion USD where as the Ford class
costs $12.8 billion USD.
So for the cost of 1 Ford class, 3 Queen Elizabeth can be deployed.
That is a massive difference and Queen Elizabeth class wins hands down.
This also signifies the financial capability of United States to fund such massive expenses.
It must be noted that according to Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI),
United Kingdom spent about 48.3 billion USD in 2016, whereas US spend around 611 billion
USD in the same period.
The two classes of aircraft carriers are customized according to the specific needs of the respective countries.
UK and US being allies, these two massively powerful platforms are not expected to come
face to face in battlefield.
America has gone for the latest and greatest technologies with their
massive financial muscle.
Britain has gone with adequately modern stuff though they have slashed few things that they
would have really like to have.
One on one Ford class is distinctively superior the Queen Elizabeth class.
With rapidly changing technologies, things can get obsolete quicker than expected, like
what happened to battleships.
Keeping in view the path chosen by UK is rational with the kind of defense budget it currently has.
US has been in the forefront of military technology and will continue to be so in
foreseeable future.
