3 forwards who could strengthen Liverpool's depth in attack

Though Jurgen Klopp is set to stick with his current alternatives to Roberto Firmino, he would still be wise to add depth to Liverpools attack.

Firmino has reached a new plateau this season, with 23 goals and 13 assists in 42 games in all competitions ensuring his most productive campaign since joining the Reds.

The Brazilian is invaluable to Klopps side, with his new-found cutting edge in the final third complementing an unparalleled work ethic for a centre-forward.

This makes it near-impossible to replace Firmino, and it seems that Klopp is instead intent on nurturing Dominic Solanke and Rhian Brewster as the Reds backups, along with Danny Ings.

His faith in youth is admirable, but with Liverpool primed for another campaign fighting for honours in both England and in Europe in 2018/19, further options across the forward line would be useful.

Here are three forwards who could strengthen Klopps attack next season.

Richarlison. Age: 20. Club: Watford. Nationality: Brazilian.

After Watford hijacked Ajaxs move for Richarlison, the young Brazilian repaid the Hornets as he hit the ground running in the first months of the season.

He scored five goals and assisted a further four in his first 13 games in the Premier League, and though he is yet to find the scoresheet again since November he remains a fine talent.

Richarlison is a skilful, versatile forward who has largely occupied the left wing for Watford this season, but is similarly comfortable up front or on the opposite flank.

Crucially, his work rate is comparable to Firminos: of forwards to play regularly (15+ games) in the Premier League this season, only him (2. 1) and Swanseas Jordan Ayew (2. 5) have averaged more successful tackles per 90 than Richarlison (two).

Speaking to FourFourTwo as part of Aprils edition, Richarlison outlined his ambition as playing in the Champions League and being the top scorer in the Premier League.

These are lofty aims, but he would certainly be better placed to do so at Liverpool.

And while a significant bid would be required given Watford paid £11. 5 million for his services last summer, Klopp being able to call upon Richarlison as an alternative to both Firmino and Sadio Mane would be a very healthy situation.

Kevin Volland. Age: 25. Club: Bayer Leverkusen. Nationality: German.

When Firmino and Volland played together at Hoffenheim, one was the hardworking, supporting No.

10 and the other the goalscoring right winger.

Now both have established themselves as strikers with their new clubs, and Vollands performances for Bayer Leverkusen this season highlight him as a prime candidate for the Reds.

Volland has the speed and strength to make the grade as a Premier League striker, and while his output is considerably less than Richarlison (0. 7 tackles per 90) he still works hard in off-ball situations, which would endear him to Klopp.

His experience as a wide forward allows him to drift into other areas as well as into a deeper position, while his linkup play with the likes of Julian Brandt and Lucas Alario this season highlights his creative prowess.

Like Richarlison, that Volland is able to operate in a number of roles across the forward line ensures he would not be pigeonholed as Firminos backup, but he could certainly excel up front.

Furthermore, Firmino already has proven chemistry with Volland on the pitch, and reuniting the duo could be hugely profitable, though it remains to be seen whether he would be open to a move.

Julian Brandt. Age: 21. Club: Bayer Leverkusen.

If Klopp is content with his options up front, identifying a genuine alternative out wide or even deeper in an attacking midfield role could be more beneficial.

Valentino Lazaro and Bertrand Traore would be excellent additions, though the former only joined Hertha Berlin permanently in November and Chelsea have first refusal if Lyon part ways with the latter.

Instead, returning to a former target in Vollands Leverkusen team-mate Brandt would increase the Reds depth significantly.

Klopp is believed to have favoured a move for the young Germany international over Mohamed Salah last summer, but his preference to remain at Leverkusen prompted a fortunate change of plan.

A release clause in Brandts contract reportedly worth as little as €12. 5 million can be activated this summer, though, presenting a bargain deal.

He has largely operated off the left wing for Leverkusen, but is also comfortable on the right flank, as a No. 10 or as second striker, while his qualities could even be utilised in the No. 8 role.

A graceful dribbler, Brandt thrives in tight spaces, dovetailing with his fellow forwards and driving at defences at pace, and at 61″ would provide added physicality in the final third.

If Liverpool can convince Brandt his future lies at Anfield, Klopp could have found his Adam Lallana upgrade.

Grading Jurgen Klopp's first summer signings after almost two full seasons at Liverpool FC

Liverpool were praised for their pre-season transfer business—but how have those fared signed in Jurgen Klopps first summer?.

Talk of Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and other recent arrivals is all well and good, but in truth the recruitment drive at Liverpool has been on the up for some time.

After two-and-a-half seasons with Klopp at the helm, the team is really starting to take shape in a manner which excites the fans for what may lie ahead.

Signings have been carefully thought out and then snared, largely no matter the cost or the wait time, and show exactly what the German boss wants to achieve with the team.

Two summers ago Klopp added five seniors to his squad—along with player-goalkeeper coach Alex Manninger, who stayed only one year and is not graded here—while a whole host departed as the reshaping continued apace.

For the quintet who joined in the summer of 2016, its almost two years up at Anfield, so how have each fared?.

Loris Karius.

What a rollercoaster it has been for the German goalkeeper since his arrival.

He was heralded as one of the Bundesligas finest when he signed, but it took him around 16 months to begin to show his best form.

Twice he usurped Simon Mignolet from the No.

1 role; the first occasion, his own inconsistencies saw him lose the position again, but there appears no danger of a repeat performance this time.

Karius has grown in stature over the last three or four months, keeping clean sheets with a mix of his own better handling, improved organisation in front of him and increased confidence from everyone—including the fans behind his goal.

The assuredness he now displays in claiming high crosses and his decision-making when leaving his six-yard box show just why Klopp was right to reintroduce him to the team.

Grade: C+.

Hes quickly pushing that grade up though; he could have been a D three months ago.

By the end of the campaign he could prove a B-.

Joel Matip.

A free transfer arrival from Schalke, Matip was Klopps chosen general to improve the Reds back line which had suffered years of torment and misfortune.

Matip has done his part to stem the tide at times, proving largely reliable, strong aerially and impressive in possession when fit and in-form.

Unfortunately, that combination has not happened too often.

The Cameroonian has been somewhat prone to niggles and muscle strains, missing isolated matches which makes it difficult to see him established as an undisputed starter.

Hes not a leader of the back line, which has necessitated an additional signing, but he is an able deputy and a good second-in-command when at his best.

Grade: C.

Decent in spells, disappointing in others.

A good defender, just not a great one so far.

Ragnar Klavan.

The Estonian raised eyebrows when Klopp brought him to Anfield, but he hasnt looked particularly out of place—certainly no more so than other centre-backs who have passed through the club over the past decade.

Klavan is the elder statesman of the back line which somehow immediately relegates him to fourth-choice; he has games where he looks indomitable and others where his lack of pace is severely tested.

Hell perhaps never be anything other than a squad player, but thats fine given his low-cost transfer fee and the fact hes mostly available when required.

Grade: C.

Hes come in and done exactly as expected: played back-up, been important when needed, sidelined for spells.

Gini Wijnaldum.

A key figure in his first season at Anfield, Wijnaldum has been in and out of the side this year as rotation and competition for places increases.

The Dutch midfielder is a real all-rounder, good in possession and tenacious in the challenge, without having a genuine stand-out attribute to his game.

At times he can frustrate on two counts: his tendency to drift through matches and not affect play, particularly on the road where his long-standing tally of zero Premier League goals is oft-cited against him, but also because there are times he utterly dominates the opposition.

In a heartbeat, Wijnaldum can sometimes stride through two or three challenges, change direction and open up huge spaces for the attack to exploit—but its a relative rarity when it happens and he can often fade out of the match shortly afterward.

He could be so much more, but it doesnt seem to occur often enough for him to be a first-name-on-the-team-sheet candidate.

Grade: B-.

There cant be too many complaints about Wijnaldum despite his away-day misfortunes.

Sadio Mane.

An absolute star at his best, unstoppable and unplayable and a joy to watch.

Sadio Mane has proven plenty of people wrong since joining the Reds, scoring more than his share along the way and proving a critical outlet for Klopps team, particularly in his debut campaign when there was nobody else capable of doing so.

For a period he was the most important member of the starting XI; that hes not this term is more down to the clubs recruitment paying dividends rather than Manes own drop-off.

He suffered a downturn this year, yes, but he remains a critical part of the team and very few go through entire campaigns, back-to-back, without suffering at least one drop-off.

A tremendous addition and an absolute steal, as it turned out.

Grade: A-.

Superb, exhilarating, explosive and exciting—just missing a little consistency.

Daniel Sturridge injury update sets up crucial end to West Brom loan spell

Daniel Sturridges physical fortitude will be tested as the Liverpool striker prepares to end his frustrating loan spell with West Brom on a high.

Sturridge joined the Baggies on a temporary deal at the end of the January transfer window, but has so far made just three appearances for the club.

With Alan Pardews side facing relegation to the Championship in May, Sturridges inability to play more than 78 minutes over the past two months will be a major disappointment.

The 28-year-old limped off with a hamstring injury just three minutes into West Broms 3-0 loss to former club Chelsea in February.

Pardew maintained hopes his absence would not be lengthy, however, initially claiming he could only miss a couple of weeks, having previously explained how he would slowly build his stamina over the games rather than in training.

This has clearly failed to pay off, with Sturridge now having missed four Premier League games, all of which his side lost—including to relegation rivals Huddersfield Town.

But according to the Birmingham Mail, the No. 15 is edging closer to a return, and could be included for Saturdays clash with Burnley at the Hawthorns.

Having made his comeback to training last week, Sturridge came through the sessions without bothering the hamstring strain suffered at Chelsea, which Pardew will hope is not a false dawn.

Since his breakthrough campaign with Liverpool in 2013/14, Sturridge has played just 87 times at club level in four seasons, scoring 28 goals and assisting a further 10.

In his first full term at Anfield alone he struck 25 and laid on nine in 33 appearances, highlighting how his diminishing fitness has impacted his top-level potential.

This latest struggle, far from the lofty heights the Reds are currently operating at, is a blow to Sturridges long-term hopes.

He is unlikely to have a future under Jurgen Klopp when he returns to Merseyside this summer, but having so far failed to prove himself at West Brom it is difficult to see a route away.

The Baggies have seven games left to play before the end of the season, and are currently seven points off 19th-placed Stoke City, rooted to the bottom of the table.

They have scored fewer goals than any other side in the Premier League, Championship, League One and League Two (24), and have also won the least amount of games (three).

Sturridge was brought in to fire West Brom away from the drop, but has been unable to do so, and his return from injury represents a last-gasp attempt at proving his vitality.
