How do we study living brains? - John Borghi and Elizabeth Waters - Duration: 5:00.
As far as we know,
there's only one thing in our solar system sophisticated enough to study itself:
the human brain.
But this self-investigation is incredibly challenging;
a living brain is shielded by a thick skull,
swaddled in layers of protective tissue,
and made up of billions of tiny, connected cells.
That's why it's so difficult to isolate, observe, and understand diseases
like Alzheimer's.
So how do we study living brains without harming their owners?
We can use a trio of techniques called EEG,
fMRI,
and PET.
Each measures something different and has its own strengths and weaknesses,
and we'll look at each in turn.
First is EEG, or electroencephalography,
which measures electrical activity in your brain.
As brain cells communicate, they produce waves of electricity.
Electrodes placed on the skull pick up these waves,
and differences in the signals detected between electrodes
provide information about what's happening.
This technique was invented almost 100 years ago,
and it's still used to diagnose conditions like epilepsy and sleep disorders.
It's also used to investigate what areas of the brain are active
during learning or paying attention.
EEG is non-invasive,
relatively inexpensive,
and fast:
it can measure changes that occur in just milliseconds.
Unfortunately, it's hard to determine
exactly where any particular pattern originates.
Electrical signals are generated constantly all over the brain
and they interact with each other to produce complex patterns.
Using more electrodes or sophisticated data-processing algorithms can help.
But in the end, while EEG can tell you precisely when certain activity occurs,
it can't tell you precisely where.
To do that, you'd need another technique,
such as functional magnetic resonance imaging, or fMRI.
fMRI measures how quickly oxygen is consumed by brain cells.
Active areas of the brain use oxygen more quickly.
So watching an fMRI scan while a person completes cognitive or behavioral tasks
can provide information about which regions of the brain might be involved.
That allows us to study everything from how we see faces
to how we understand what we're feeling.
fMRI can pinpoint differences in brain activity to within a few millimeters,
but it's thousands of times slower than EEG.
Using the two techniques together
can help show when, and where, neural activity is occurring.
The third, even more precise, technique is called positron emission tomography
and it measures radioactive elements introduced into the brain.
That sounds much scarier than it actually is;
PET scans, like fMRI and EEG, are completely safe.
During a PET scan, a small amount of radioactive material called a tracer
is injected into the bloodstream,
and doctors monitor its circulation through the brain.
By modifying the tracer to bind to specific molecules,
researchers can use PET to study the complex chemistry in our brains.
It's useful for studying how drugs affect the brain
and detecting diseases like Alzheimer's.
But this technique has the lowest time resolution of all
because it takes minutes for the tracer to circulate and changes to show up.
These techniques collectively help doctors and scientists
connect what happens in the brain with our behavior.
But they're also limited by how much we still don't know.
For example, let's say researchers are interested in studying how memory works.
After asking 50 participants to memorize a series of images while in MRI scanners,
the researchers might analyze the results
and discover a number of active brain regions.
Making a link between memory and specific parts of the brain
is an important step forward.
But future research would be necessary
to better understand what's happening in each region,
how they work together,
and whether the activity is because of their involvement in memory
or another process occurring simultaneously.
More advanced imaging and analysis technology
might one day provide more accurate results
and even distinguish
the activity of individual neurons.
Until then, our brains will keep measuring, analyzing, and innovating
in pursuit of that quest to understand
one of the most remarkable things we've ever encountered.

Meghan Markle saw her Suits character live happily ever after as she made her final appearance as a show regular on Wednesday.
The actress, 36, saw alter-ego Rachel Zane wed lawyer Mike Ross - Patrick J.
Adams, whos also departing the show - in an art-imitates-life sequence to wrap up the season in a two-hour finale on the USA Network.
Markle last year quit the legal drama after announcing her forthcoming wedding to Prince Harry, which will take place in just a few weeks at Windsor Castle on May 19.
On Tuesdays episode, Rachel had a chat with Mike after he received an offer for the both of them to leave their New York City digs to work in Seattle for a firm seeking to stand up for the little guy, with class action suits against Fortune 500 companies.
The opportunity came amid a pro-bono legal battle he undertook over a toxic industrial plant run by a battery company impacting the kids of a nearby community with lead poisoning.
This is heartbreaking, Rachel said of the case, telling Mike, Youre helping them the best way that you can.
Mike then dropped the big news on her about the life-changing opportunity in the offing.
I got a job offer today its like a clinic but with big firm money.
and he wants us to run it, he said.
What if I told you Id consider it? Rachel replied.

Rachel appeared in a subsequent scene in which Harvey (Gabriel Macht) approached her and asked her to look through her fathers files - specifically old performance reviews - that was key information in a lawsuit the firm was involved in.

Later, Rachel and Mike sat in his office.
She told him, I want to think about the job offer and what it means if we take it, but he informed her that the offer hed received was a hoax.
The world could use a lot more people like you, Louis told Mike, to which Rachel added, I couldnt agree more.
The scene ended with Rachel and Mike embracing.
They were then in a scene imploring Harvey to deal with a major battle he was involved in.
She and Mike then discussed the ongoing problems in the case and the means they could take to solve them.
Rachel subsequently told Mike that the Seattle offer was indeed legitimate, and worked with him in the office to disentangle the murky arrangement behind the large company they were pitted against in his legal battle.
In a bedroom scene, Rachel said she she confirmed the offer from Andy Forsyth (Harry Judge) was still in play, and implored him to make the cross-country move.
Mike, were young and we dont have any kids yet, and if were ever gonna do something like this in our lives, Rachel said, we should do it now.
Mike said they would have to leave town soon, and the two agreed to move up their wedding six weeks.
Ive wanted to marry you since the second I met you and Im tired of waiting, Mike told Rachel, who replied, Im so excited!.
Rachel then enlisted Donna Paulsen (Sarah Rafferty) to help her move up the wedding, which she agreed to.
I love you Rachel, Donna told Rachel, who replied, I love you, too.
The members of the firm all congregated as the wedding commenced underscored to the sound of John Legends All of Me, with Mike and Rachel exchanging words of love prior to becoming a married couple.
Youre the husband I always wanted, Rachel said, before a sequence in which the pair exchanged vows, enjoyed a kiss and walked off hand-in-hand as husband and wife.
Mike then told Harvey that he and Rachel were leaving to take over the firm in the Emerald City.
This is who I am, its who Ive always been, Mike said.
Its time Harvey - its time..
The stunning actress was at Prince Harrys side at in London on Wednesday for a service for ANZAC day, which was also attended by new dad-of-three Prince William.
Markle is not expected to be seen in public again until the couples wedding on May 19 at Windsor Castle.
Harry and Meghan have been in a relationship since June 2016, and publicly acknowledged their romance in November 2016, when an official statement was released from the royal familys communications secretary.

Markle had been a regular on Suits since its 2011 debut, appearing in 107 out of 108 episodes broadcast in that span.

For me, once we hit the 100-episode marker, I thought, I have ticked this box and I feel really proud of the work we've done there and now it's time to work as a team with Harry, she said.
Markle said she didnt view leaving the show as a sacrifice, as she prepares for her new life with the British royal family when she exchanges vows with Prince Harry May 19.
I don't see it as giving anything up, she said.
I just see it as a change.
It's a new chapter.
And keep in mind I've been working on my show for seven years.
We were very fortunate to have that sort of longevity on a series..
NBCUniversals Chris McCumber said in January that everyone at USA will deeply miss Patrick and Meghan, and are grateful for the talent and commitment they brought to Suits seasons after season, adding, We wish each of them nothing but the very best.

After GI disbanded
I began working on my first solo album.
I've already released my work with Cha Cha (Malone).
So for the people that enjoy my music
and enjoy listening to me,
I just want to continue releasing more music for them.
I want them to enjoy it as much as they can.
The main thing I do is mix the beats from hip-hop and R&B
and I use the beats from both genres to give
kind of a unique taste.
I have friends in Korea that I enjoy working with.
They are mostly underground
but I look forward to working with them.
