The Meandering Mythos of American Gods (or, how it builds a world) - Duration: 9:25.
A world 10 years in the making. One filled with heroes and legends from all
over the globe, whose stories have been reinvented for modern day, that makes us
believe that their truly is a whole universe out there, just waiting to be
explored. It's the epitome of what good world building should do. And it's why
in this episode of the Storyteller's Notebook, a series in which I analyze
various storytelling techniques used by various creators in various mediums, I want to talk about . . .
American Gods, specifically the 10th Anniversary Edition
of the original novel, and its approach to world building . . .
I mean, you read the title right? Oh, spoilers by the way, for the book and, though I'm not explicitly
talking about it, the TV series.
American Gods is a fantasy novel by Neil Gaiman published in 2001, set in a world
where gods and mythological beings are real, and are created and feed off of
people's belief in them. The story follows Shadow Moon, a convict released
from prison early on account of his wife's sudden death who takes up a job
as a bodyguard for a mysterious grifter called Mr. Wednesday, and
quickly becomes embroiled in a battle between gods both old and new as they
fight for the heart and soul of modern America. It's a rich and fascinating
novel whose themes of deception, betrayal, identity, and immigration are ever
relevant, especially nowadays in our current political climate. And while it
does have its problems, something I hope the TV series has worked on since, even
though I'm using footage from it to make editing this a lot easier I, admittedly
haven't properly watched the TV series yet - I'm sorry - One of the things this
novel does amazingly well is its world-building.
It blends together myths, legends and cultural icons from all over the world
with a contemporary American setting in such a way that's down-to-earth, surreal,
and epic, as if this tale of warring gods is just one of many playing out in this
mythical no-man's land. A lot of this comes from the story's strong sense
of history. Each of the gods, as well as having their own mythologies to draw
from, also have their own unique backstories about how they ended up in
America. Mr. Wednesday, who we learn is actually the Norse god Odin, arrived in
America in 813 AD, alongside Tyr and Thor, after a longboat of Vikings landed in
America, and hung a local Native American man in sacrifice to them, before being
slaughtered by said sacrifice's tribe in revenge. Mad Sweeney, a leprechaun from
Ireland - Aaaaaay - came across the Atlantic in the mind of a girl from Bantry Bay
trying to escape the Great Famine. Ibis, Jacquel, and Bast, who are the Egyptian
gods Thoth, Anubis, and Bastet respectively, ended up in America after the ancient
Egyptians established a trade route with Native Americans thousands of years ago,
and stayed long enough for their beliefs to stick. The Coming to America chapters
each build upon this history, similarly showing how various mythical figures
arrived in America in their own strange ways, from the Cornish pixie who ended
up in America because of a kleptomaniac girl banished from Britain, and her
belief in fairy folk, to the mammoth god, Nunyunnini, who led his tribe across the
barren snows of the Bering land bridge to the New World, only to be forgotten when
said tribe was conquered by a more powerful one many generations later.
It even shows that there are many incarnations of these gods all across the world,
with how Mama-ji mentions that there's a version of her back in India doing
better than her, and the fact that shadow runs into another version of Odin in
Reykjavik, Iceland, in the Postscript. And, as a side note, the extra chapters often
use their prose to show that they exist independently of the narrative. The
Somewhere in America chapters are written in present tense to emphasize
the feeling of them happening right now . . . somewhere in America, and the Coming to
America chapters use run on lines in italic to show Mr. Ibis' actions as he
writes these tales before flowing back into the prose.
The dense lore and background
behind these gods and goddesses, as well as the extra stories independent of the
main plot, strengthens and reinforces the idea that this is a world that has and
does exist beyond the bounds of the main story, and will continue to long after it
comes to a close. And the book takes pride in exploring this world as much as
it can, showing off all sorts of interesting places, usually based on real
locations, and all kinds of quirky characters that give the world a
distinct sense of identity. From the hustle and bustle of big cities like Las
Vegas and San Francisco to the dozens of small towns dotted across the South,
Midwest, and Far North, like Cairo or Eagle Point, to places like the House on
the Rock, a tourist trap so bizarre in its history and design that Gaiman said
he had to quote, "tone it down a bit so people would believe it" . . .
in a fantasy novel . . . about gods and monsters and - you get the point, the House on the Rock is a
weird place. They all highlight a grandiose mythicality to the American
landscape that builds on the book's fantasy focus. Likewise, the novel's
characters reveal the varying lifestyles of this world's inhabitants. Some of the
gods, like Czernobog and the Zorya sisters, are just about getting by, living
off a combination of Czernobog's pension from the slaughterhouse where he used to
work, and the extra cash his Zoryas are able to bring in through fortune-telling.
Others, like the Man in the Grey Suit and Easter, are able to live quite well, with
the Man into Grey Suit feeding off the money and time people sacrifice to his
casino, and Easter living off the fact that people still celebrate her holiday,
even though no one knows who she, actually is. And others still, like
the new gods, do manage to thrive, but at a cost.
Through the world's locations and characters, we understand that this is a vast and
mythical world, and one whose people struggle in one way or another, doing
their best to get to the next day or desperately doing everything in their
power to stay relevant. It gives the novel's setting a lived-in vibe and
establishes a consistent tone that makes it stand out. But for as important as all
this lore and scenery is, what makes it all click together is the fact that it's all
in service of the story. As you can probably guess from what I've talked about
so far, there are several thematic through lines in the world of American Gods. The
old gods - gods of the harvest, of justice, and of death - have been forgotten by the
people who brought them to America, replaced by new ones - gods of opinion, of
media, and of the Internet - Similarly, many of the small towns Shadow visits across
America are either spiraling into poverty, being abandoned, or being
consumed by corporate interests.
Lakeside, the small northern town Shadow spends several chapters hiding out in, seems to be the
only small town that's doing well and even, then it's only because of the sacrifices
that Hinzelmann, a nice old man everyone in town is friends with,
takes from it every year. He's an old god, himself created through sacrifice,
desperately clinging to his power. At the same time, the book's characters have a
strong knack for deception and betrayal. Shadow's quite proficient at coin tricks,
and art built around misdirection and deception. While Shadow was imprison, his
wife, Laura had an affair with his best friend,
betraying his trust. Mr. Wednesday earns his money by scamming people, a point
made abundantly clear with his bank robbery in Chapter 5. Mr. World, the
mysterious leader of the men in black and the head of the new god's forces, turns
out to be none other than Loki, the infamous Norse god of trickery
and deception himself. And in the end, it turns out that Mr. Wednesday and Loki have
been working together to stoke the flames of war between the gods, which
they could then use to increase their power, betraying and deceiving not only
Shadow, but also all the gods who have put their utmost trust and faith in them.
Meanwhile, there's also a focus in the idea of people finding a way to reinvent
themselves. Many of the supplementary stories focus on immigrants trying to
build a new life for themselves in America, and even Shadow is an ex-convict
doing his best to move on after his wife's death. It's a world that is
constantly changing, that's quick to adapt, and where to downtrodden and
miserable have the opportunity to completely turn their lives around. But,
at the same time, this is a world where people ignore their problems, and let
them fester and grow in this land that is so bad for gods. The world, while
feeling vast and expansive, is built to reflect and reinforce the novel's core
themes and ideas. American Gods' approach to world building is to, essentially,
treat its world like a character in its own right. Which, is ironic, given that in
the novel, America itself is, also a god, but, that's a whole thing. The world
has its own backstory, its own identity, its own relatable struggles and
conflicts, and most importantly, it plays a part in the narrative. It's a strange,
and yet, creatively simple idea to give a world, and by extension, the story it's
been built for, an extra layer of personality.
And yeah, those are my thoughts. Let me know what yous think, if yous agree,
disagree, if you're a fan of Neil Gaiman's work - or Gaiman, I don't know how
to pronounce his last name - what your thoughts on world-building are, etc,
and thanks for watching! Also, let me know what yous thought of the
style of this video, I'm trying some new and I wanna get some feedback. If yous

7 Animals with Really Wild Tongues - Duration: 11:03.
[INTRO ♪]
Your tongue does a lot for you—it helps you swallow, taste your food,
it does all of these extremely intricate things that my toungue is doing right now
so that you can understand all the words—just, like, what does it do—so amazing! Blubliblibl-lah!
Maybe your tongue can perform cool tricks, like you can roll your tongue,
or do that clover thing that people can do that's ... ueahhh ... ung ...
Am I doing it?
But when it comes to lingual feats, our species—while amazing—has nothing on the animals on this list.
They can do amazing things with their tongues,
like catapult them out of their mouths, or use them to lure unsuspecting prey.
These seven animals have some of the world's longest, stretchiest,
stickiest, trickiest, and just plain old weirdest tongues.
If you've ever seen a chameleon grab a bug,
you already know that their sticky tongues are quite impressive.
They can be more than twice as long as the animal's body when fully stretched—
proportionally, the longest of any vertebrate.
And they can be launched with surprising speed and accuracy to capture prey.
In fact, when a 2004 study used high-speed video and X-ray film
to capture the tongues of two species in action,
they found they rocketed out of their mouths at more than 20 kilometers per hour.
And a similar study in 2016 clocked the acceleration of one chameleon's tongue
at more than 2,590 meters per second squared—
that's over two hundred times the rate at which the fastest sports car can go from 0-100.
Such speed takes a lot of power—more than ordinary muscles can provide.
When scientists carefully dissected chameleon specimens in search of an explanation,
they found a helix-structured sheath of elastic collagen tissue
between the tongue's anchoring bone and the accelerator muscle:
a biological catapult.
Energy is stored in the collagen tissue as the muscles contract,
and then this unique structure telescopes outward kind of like a spring when triggered.
And if you want to watch this happen in, like, super slow motion, see what's going on?
It's pretty amazing—Smarter Every Day did a great video we will link in the description.
So yeah, in addition to rapid color-changing and independently moving eyes,
you can add spring-loaded tongues to the list of weird chameleon adaptations.
Evolution might have gone a bit overboard with these guys.
The South American tube-lipped nectar bat has an elongated lower lip
that rolls up into a tube, hence the name.
But its lip isn't what sets it apart from its closest relatives.
That would be—you guessed it!—its tongue,
which would make even Gene Simmons jealous.
These bats' tongues can be one and a half times the length of their bodies,
or about 6 to 8 centimeters long—they're not huge bats.
Proportionally, that's the longest tongue of any mammal,
and second only to chameleons among vertebrates.
It's so long that, instead of being anchored at the back of the mouth
like in most mammals, it continues back through the neck
all the way down into to the rib cage.
The bat needs that length because of its special relationship with its food.
As their name implies, these bats feed on nectar,
which is hiding at the base of the super elongated flowers.
Their extra long tongues allow them to reach so deeply
that they can feed from a plant none of their relatives can,
which has flowers that are eight or nine centimeters long.
And as far as scientists can tell, they're the only pollinator for that plant's flowers.
While lots of plants have similarly tight relationships with insects,
this is the only known example of a plant relying so intimately upon a bat.
And that makes the tube-lipped nectar bat's incredibly long tongue vital to both species.
Woodpeckers are so named for their somewhat annoying habit
of banging on trees with their their chisel-like bills.
But that beak is only one of their tools they have for extracting the bugs they eat—
the second is their super long, narrow tongue.
In fact, their tongues make them somewhat harder to study than other species,
as they can get horribly tangled in the fine nets ornithologists use to capture birds.
Most woodpeckers have backwards-facing barbs near the tips of their tongues,
which let them use them like a spear or a rake to drag insects out of holes in the tree bark.
And they're coated in sticky saliva, which also helps with the bug-slurping.
But what really makes these tongues interesting
is where the birds put them when they're not in use.
A woodpecker's tongue can be several times longer than its bill,
so when it's retracted, it coils around the skull,
sometimes so far that part of the structure supporting it pokes into the bird's nostril.
That structure is called the hyoid—
the bone that an animal's tongue muscles are typically attached to.
In woodpeckers, the ends of this horseshoe-shaped bone
wrap back around the skull and sometimes even connect.
The hyoid both holds the tongue in place and acts as a shock absorber for the skull,
helping protect it during all that drumming action.
A tongue bone that doubles as a skull harness is definitely weird enough to make this list.
You may have heard of pangolins for the saddest of reasons:
some estimate they account for 20% of the world's illegal wildlife trade.
That's because, instead of hair, they're covered in keratin scales,
which are believed to have all sorts of mystical powers.
There are eight pangolin species distributed across Asia and Africa,
some of which have declined as much as 80% in the last decade
thanks mostly to poaching.
And it's a shame they're so well known for their scaly armor
when their tongues are so weird.
Extended to full length, pangolin tongues are longer than their bodies.
They're so long that they're actually anchored at the base of the rib cage
instead of the throat, kind of like those little bats we talked about.
And inside is a solid rod of cartilage which contains an artery
that supplies blood to tissue in the tongue to stiffen it.
If that sounds kind of like the erectile tissue in a penis?
Yeah, it's—it's basically the same idea.
Keeping the tongue rigid helps with thrusting it into ant and termite colonies
to extract the bugs the animal feeds on.
The pangolin's other common name is "scaly anteater."
And that stiff tongue is also coated in sticky saliva,
so when the pangolin retracts it out of the insect colony, it is covered in yummy treats.
The insects are then scraped off at the entrance to the animal's throat
with a specialized hyoid bone, as pangolins don't have any teeth.
Also, their babies are called pangopups.
That's not really relevant to tongues, or really anything.
It's just something you need to know.
The enormous, prehistoric-looking alligator snapping turtle
is found in rivers and lakes in the southeastern U.S.
But even though they're the largest freshwater turtle in North America,
they can be hard to spot, because they spend most of their lives underwater.
They'll remain submerged for almost an hour at a time,
much of which they spend patiently waiting for their food to come to them.
Which it does, because the turtles use worm-shaped protrusions from their tongues as bait.
The technical term for this technique is lingual luring,
and alligator snappers are the only turtles that have bait built into their mouths.
A hungry turtle will sit motionless on the river bottom,
open wide, and wiggle their weird tongue lure temptingly.
This is accomplished through the work of several muscles
attached to the animal's hyoid apparatus—
a set of about a dozen articulating skeletal pieces.
The lure itself, or vermiform appendage—
which literally just means worm-shaped appendage—
is branched, creating the appearance of a complete wiggling worm.
And it can fill with blood to become slightly larger, firmer and pinker,
presumably to become more worm-y.
The shape, color, and movement draws curious fish and frogs close,
right into the danger zone.
Since the appendage also contains a lot of sensory nerves,
as soon as the turtle feels something touch it, reflex takes over, and… snap.
So if you're swimming in a lake in the southeast
and you spot something, like, weird and mysterious wiggling away below you there…
Don't! No!
The finger-removing abilities of snapping turtles? Not a myth!
Now, compared to giraffes' other long traits, their 40 to 70 cm tongues actually seem kind of short.
But they're not just two thirds of a meter long—
they're also prehensile, meaning they're capable of
wrapping around and grasping stuff, and they're a deep shade of bluish-purple.
Even with their long necks, giraffes can still struggle
to reach the tender leaves at the very tops of acacia trees—
hence that sizeable tongue.
And its dexterity helps sort out the tasty bits from spiny twigs.
In fact, they're so used to manipulating food with their tongues
that when zoos make their meals too easy to get at,
the animals get kind of neurotic and start licking other stuff.
This random licking behavior is actually reduced if their food is prepared
in a way that gives their tongues, like, an appropriate workout.
A giraffe's tongue also has a very tough, sandpapery surface
and thick, antiseptic saliva, which help prevent and heal cuts and abrasions
that it gets from rooting around for leaves among gnarly acacia thorns.
That saliva is also thought to keep any thorns that do get swallowed
from harming the digestive tract—
pokey bits get coated so thickly in the stuff that they just pass through.
As for the dark purple-blue color— no one is 100% sure,
but most experts think that it helps prevent sunburn,
since they spend so much time with their tongues sticking out.
You don't want to get a tongue sunburn!
And these antiseptic, prehensile tongues have another handy use for giraffes:
they help them keep their nostrils and ears squeaky clean!
Blue whales are the largest animals on the planet,
so it's not surprising that their tongues are correspondingly huge.
Just the tongue of a blue whale can weigh as much as an elephant.
But it's not just big—it's also super stretchy,
which helps when you want to use it to move around tens of thousands of liters of water.
To get a mouthful of tiny krill, blue whales open up wide
and lunge through dense schools at high speeds.
The resulting force of all that water rushing into the whale's mouth
flips its tongue inside out and expands the pleated bottom of its mouth.
Together they form a giant pouch, full of doomed critters.
Then, the whale closes its mouth.
The tongue helps squeeze all that water out,
filtering it through the baleen plates and leaving behind
a mouthful of food—as much as half a million calories' worth.
In other animals, stretching out all that flesh and then contracting it again
would wreak havoc on the nerves in the mouth and tongue.
But the tongue nerves of blue whales and their relatives
have a special adaptation to handle this—they're super stretchy, like bungee cords.
The nerve fibers can extend to twice their regular length,
and then snap back, none the worse for wear.
Who knew so much went into scooping up mouthfuls of teeny tiny krill!
It's hard to imagine having a sticky, spring-loaded tongue
that can shoot out of your mouth and snag a roll from the next table over,
or a tongue that doubles as a fishing lure, no rod and reel required.
But for these animals, outlandish tongues are the norm.
And maybe them looking at us, they're like, "What are they doing with all that ta—noise makin'? Weirdos!"
Thanks to natural selection, maybe we've all learned some extreme lingual tricks!
Thank you for watching this episode of SciShow, which was great! It was a rollercoaster, you guys.

Brazil's First Ever Double Olympic Gold Medallist | The Olympics On The Record - Duration: 5:34.
Brazilian success at the Olympic Games
has, in recent times,
been focused on the team events.
Brazilian footballers.
Brazilian volleyball players.
Brazilian footballers.
Brazilian volleyball players.
This Brazilian volleyball team in particular
typify their nation's exuberance,
skill and sophisticated teamwork.
They won back-to-back Olympic gold medals
in Beijing and London.
For the last Brazilian athlete to win consecutive gold medals,
you have to go back to this man.
Adhemar Ferreira da Silva from Brazil.
Born into a poor family in Sao Paulo
in the 1920s,
the son of a railway worker,
he dreamed of representing his home football team Sao Paulo,
until a German athletics coach, Dietrich Gerner,
spotted his athletic talent and pushed Da Silva
towards the triple jump.
Perhaps young Adhemar was too much of an individual
to be a team player, because the triple jump
is the perfect pursuit
for the single-minded athlete.
Sometimes called the hop, skip and jump,
the triple jump featured
in the very first Olympic Games in Athens.
The combination of speed, timing and strength
is hard to co-ordinate -
and easy to get wrong.
The four stages of the triple jump are all important.
The approach is all about speed.
The hop must carry forward the momentum.
The skip sets up the final stage -
the jump, propelling yourself as far forward as you can,
both legs out in front of you for the landing.
It takes a certain kind of athlete,
capable of remarkable fluency and poise.
Aged just 20, Da Silva represented Brazil
at the 1948 Olympic Games in London.
The winner that year was Arne Ahman of Sweden.
Da Silva finished eighth. He was still learning his craft.
He learnt well.
In 1950, he equalled the world record
with a jump of 16 metres,
a mark that had stood since 1936.
A year later, he won the Pan-American championship
and extended the world record to 16.1 metres.
An Olympic gold medal, however, was his key target.
And the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki would see
Da Silva dominate his event.
Firstly, with a jump of 16.12 metres, a new world record.
And then, in the fifth round, where he bettered it again
with a jump of 16.22 metres.
He also passed 16 metres
in two other rounds.
Adhemar Ferreira da Silva not only wins
the hop, step and jump title,
but breaks the world record four times in a row.
When the gold medal was confirmed,
Da Silva gave a lap of honour.
An outstanding Olympic champion,
he receives the enthusiastic tribute of the crowd.
A talented linguist, he taught himself Finnish before
the games and he conversed with the fans
as he went around the stadium.
There was no more popular athlete in track and field.
Ha-ha, Da Silva wins da gold, ha-ha.
You've been working on that one for a while, haven't you?
Ha-ha, hoo-ha, Da Silva wins da gold.
Oh, that's too good.
Da Silva's world record was not to last
and was beaten the following year.
Then came the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne,
and Da Silva was the undisputed world number one.
But he'd face a challenge from an unlikely opponent -
25-year-old Icelander Vilhjalmur Einarsson,
in the second round
of the final, jumped nearly 18 inches further
than he'd ever done before.
A mighty jump of 16.26 metres.
This meant the champion had to dig deep.
Defending champion, 29-year-old Ferreira da Silva.
He appeared slightly rattled
after the Icelander's mighty performance,
and it wasn't until his last three jumps
that Da Silva showed his true greatness.
Yes, 16.35 metres, a new Olympic record
and the gold medal to Brazil's Ferreira da Silva.
And consolation for Einarsson,
his silver was Iceland's
first ever Olympic track and field medal.
Iceland only had two competitors at this games,
and that they should win one medal
is certainly a good effort.
Da Silva, an Olympic legend, was the only Brazilian athlete
to have won gold in two consecutive Olympics
until the 2012 games.
There, the Brazilian women's volleyball squad
defended their title.
Adhemar da Silva died in 2001,
an icon of Brazilian and South American sport.
Today, the Sao Paulo Football Club still wears two gold stars
on their shirts in tribute to their greatest fan.

How To Straighten Hair with a Brush - Mens Hair Straightening - Duration: 10:31.
- If you've been curious about
these hair straightening brushes
and you wanna see how one works,
keep watching this video,
'cause we're gonna test it on this mop today!
Hello everybody, and welcome back to my channel,
my name is Thomas is you're brand new here
and style and hair related videos every single week.
So if that's your kind of thing, make sure you hit
the subscribe button and visit me every single Monday.
Welcome to today's video where I'm gonna be testing
out the flow ceramic styling brush from Vanity Planet.
I've done a couple of videos with Vanity Planet before
actually, I've tried out their teeth whitening kit
which was awesome, I've also tried out their spin brush
which was even more awesome and then now today
I'm gonna be looking at their straightening brush.
You guys might have seen ceramic brushes
or straightening brushes as they're called,
around on the internet lately.
They've been craze, and I dunno, they just really
caught my attention, I've been seeing lots of videos
of them around on the internet and I thought,
it's my turn to try one.
And I've done lots of other straightening videos
before as well, so I thought, hey, this is just
another way to straighten your hair.
I was really intrigued because if I could just brush
my hair straight, could you imagine how much
time that would save doing all of this?
That's what I thought too.
There is certain specs about this one in particular
that I liked other than other ones that I saw
on the market, Vanity Planet didn't actually contact me
this time, I contacted them and I said
hey, can I try out your brush?
And they said sure, so they've sent it over,
and today we're gonna try it out.
If you guys are interested in grabbing one of these as well,
Vanity Planet, 'cause we've worked together before,
there will be a link in the description box below
with a discount code that will get you 50% off
this bad boy, so yeah, enjoy.
I am also going to covering product specs
and all the cool things about this so if you're keen
for that, keep watching from here, if not,
go to this section of the video and you can watch me
straighten my hair.
So first up, I thought we'd cover a couple of the points
as to why I even wanted to go with the Vanity Planet one,
I did have lots of choices,
and yeah, I'm just gonna read them out to ya.
It's great for reducing the amount of time required
in straightening hair, perfect,
for wavy and frizzy hair types,
yes that's us, tick, we're definitely qualified for this.
Anti-static ceramic bristles straighten and smooth
your hair as you brush, perfect.
It's got advanced ionic technology
combined with the ceramic bristles and brush plate
to deliver a straight and shiny styles
without damaging your hair, yes that's perfect.
It's got digital heat controls that go from 170 to 370
and ensure that you have the perfect heat setting
for your hair type, so depending on how crazy your hair is
you can actually adjust it from 170 to 370.
It's lightweight, compact, convenient for travel.
It's got an ergonomic shape with a slip-free
thumb grip and it's also got a 360 tangle swivel cord
so you can like kind of move your arms around
and it doesn't get all tangled up, which is perfect.
Another cool thing to note about this is
most heating appliances like blow dryers,
beard trimmers, hair straighteners,
and even these brushes, they'll have a certain voltage
for the country that you're in.
Now this brush has been sent to me from either
Canada or America, judging by this plug,
I remember these plugs when I was in Canada.
And usually, North America will run on 110 wattage, right,
and then over here in Australia, we actually run
on a higher voltage and it's like 240 voltage.
But this actually covers the entire range,
so it goes from 110 to 240, you can see it right there.
Which means I'm actually able to plug this into
a normal adapter like that that doesn't have a converter
and I won't burn my hair off.
You've probably seen a lot of videos where people like
plug their straightener into the wall
then they start doing their hair and all of a sudden
their hair comes out because the heat,
well the wattage that was going through the appliance
was too hot and it actually burns their hair off.
So, judging by this I can stress less
and just know that I can use the adapter
and it won't burn my hair off.
So yeah, that's a really good selling point as well,
so anybody in Australia, anybody in Southeast Asia,
you'll be able to grab this brush as well
and use it without needing to worry.
That's a bonus.
There's a couple of other notes about this as well,
these aren't a flat iron, they emit heat
from the plates instead of clamping down
like a usual hair straightener would,
so it's a little bit unreasonable to expect
a pin straight look like you would get
with a hair straightener, but from what I can see,
it's gonna be really, really cool.
And overall, I'm pretty sure it's designed
to give you like a natural straight look in minutes.
So it can make everything quicker,
it's all about efficiency these days, you know?
Now, let's get into hair straightening, shall we?
What I've done previously to filming this video,
I've actually already applied all of my pre-straightening
products, so I use a straightening balm,
a leave-in cream and a heat protector.
Because I've got a lot to cover in this video today,
I've decided to do them earlier and if you are interested
in all the products I used to protect my hair
while straightening, I'm gonna leave card
just up there so you can go and check that out as well.
It does also say with this product as well,
that people with really curly hair, AKA me,
are better off sectioning their hair to straighten it out
rather than just going straight at it with like
a normal brush.
That's better for wavy haired people like me.
So what we're gonna do, is we're gonna do our sections
like this, chuck some ibis clips in.
Can still smell the Sebastian Trilliant Heat Protector
in my hair, it smells so good, I love it.
Ahhhhh.
Okay, let's turn 'er on.
Okay, we've got a blue screen right there.
Okay, so when I've turned it on, it said 170 degrees
Fahrenheit, so 170 degrees Fahrenheit I think equals
like 76 degrees celsius, and then it pumps right up
I think the max, it said 370 on here but
it actually goes to 400 Fahrenheit.
So and 400 Fahrenheit, I've just checked is
about 204 degrees celsius.
So she gonna get hot, it's heating up right now,
and like I'm just touching that, doesn't seem
too hot at all, it's actually quite safe.
I think these bristles are also designed
so they don't burn people.
Let's have a go.
Oh, this is exciting.
Nice.
Wow, look at that.
That's actually pretty cool.
Okay, let's try more.
Kinda gotta get used to this thing.
Whoa, that actually did it really quick, look at that.
It's like giving me a blow out,
it's quite groovy.
What!?
That is actually amazing.
Whoa, okay, cool.
Alright, there's the difference right there.
This on wavy hair would be, literally,
like a pin straight look.
Look what that's already done to my hair there,
that's insane.
Okay, now let's get the other side.
It actually makes really cool waves, holy hell.
Stop being so fantastic.
I'm having fun with this, this is cool.
Alright, so I've just done this first little section
down here and I wanna show you a close up, look at that.
That has done a really, really good job
of my hair in just like a couple of minutes.
That was frickin insane.
So far, so good.
And actually, what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna put
this on speed up and I'm gonna start doing the rest
of my hair and then we'll come back and we'll have a look
at the final result, because wow, this is cool.
(upbeat piano music)
Alright, holy smokes, so that is my hair
completely straightened in literally 20 minutes.
I started this video at 4 o'clock
and it's now 4:20.
That is an absolute record for me,
I have never been able to, even when I had an undercut,
I was never able to straighten my hair in 20 minutes,
that's crazy.
Just by looking at it already, I can see,
i have not got that pinstripe look that
I would usually get from a straightener
but what instead what I've been given is this
it's almost like a wave, it kind of looks like
my hair is naturally wavy with this.
Overall, I'm actually dead set impressed,
this is gonna save so much time,
especially if I'm gonna be doing
a neat man bun or something like that
and I need to straighten my hair quickly
or if I wanna wear a natural wave.
I think from here, if i were to wear my hair out,
I probably would still have to put a product in it.
Thinking of using the hybrid cream clay today,
simply because that still give me flexibility
and a bit more texture, but overall I think
this is magical, I think my man bun is gonna look
really great, that was so easy to do as well.
I'm actually mind blown.
So let's put some Hybrid Cream Clay in it
and let's see how we can go with our hair.
I might put it in the ends there
'cause the ends do look a little bit poofy,
but that's I think, expected, because you can't
really expect a brush to achieve the exact same thing
that a straightener could, so I'm just gonna chuck
that in there.
Also gonna chuck a bit of Jane Carter Solution in there.
With a bit of Riot Control Oil.
Moisturise me.
The joys of having really dry hair.
Still super stoked with this straightened though,
can't believe it.
Looking like Gayle Anderson.
Okay, I'm getting a little bit obsessed with it now, sorry.
So what I've ended up doing in the end,
I just added a few different products in.
I added some Hybrid Cream Clay,
I added some Jane Carter Solution,
I used some, even some sponge wax,
and some Riot Control Oil.
Just a few things to spruce it up
and from that straighten, those products
have been able to do this.
I'm not even kidding you, I haven't even used
an actual straightener in this.
And I'm pretty surprised,
I would actually wear my hair long like this,
you guys probably haven't really seen that much either,
have you, since I've grown it out,
but, wow, it looks cool,
and I'm really loving the natural wave that it's given.
So neat, and beautiful.
So just for a moment in review,
I'm actually loving this product.
A) Because it's shortened my routine significantly,
I've gone from an hour to 20 minutes.
I managed to achieve this look with just
a bit of product and the brush,
so that's definitely a thumbs up.
The fact that it didn't burn my hair off
and it was able to connect to an Australian adapter
without any failure, that's another thumbs up from me.
And plus, being an impatient millennial in 2018
I do really like things that speed up my processes,
so this flow brush is really gonna help me with that,
especially with my man buns
and yeah, if you guys have wavy or curly hair,
you should definitely check this out.
If you have curly hair, definitely do the sections.
If you have wavy hair you're probably gonna get
a pin straight look that you would get with a straightener
because I actually can't believe it, I haven't used
a hair straightener at all today, so yeah, I'm excited.
If you guys do wanna check this out, again,
the link will be in the description box below
and this code will give you 50% off your very own
flow ceramic styling brush.
Thanks so much for coming and checking this out.
Another straightening video in the casket,
I always love doing these straightening videos
and if you do want to check out the pre-straightening
products that I use, there will be a card
up in the card section for you
so make sure you check that out
and if you haven't already joined the Facebook group
make sure you do that too.
There will be a link in the description box
and I'll see you next week for another video okay guys.
Catch ya later.
Bye!

White House Correspondents' Association President: Michelle Wolf Is Joking - Duration: 3:36.
White House Correspondents' Association President Believes Michelle Wolf's Jokes Didn't 'Embody the Spirit of the Night'
If you're daring enough to open Twitter today, you'd pretty much find a 50/50 split over people lauding or lamenting Michelle Wolf's performance at the White House Correspondents' Dinner on Saturday evening.
Since Donald Trump has already given his social media verdict on Wolf "bombing" at the dinner, why not keep this presidential feedback going and check in with the current president of the White House Correspondents' Association as well? Because, as it turns out, both presidents have similar mindsets when it comes to Wolf's jokes.
"My goal in putting together last night's dinner was to unify the room and the country around journalism and the First Amendment and I shared what I believe about those subjects in my own remarks," Margaret Talev told Politico.
"The association by tradition does not preview or censor the entertainer's remarks.
Some of them made me uncomfortable and did not embody the spirit of the night.
And that is protected by the First Amendment.
I appreciated Sarah Sanders for joining us at the head table and her grace through the program.".
In the aftermath of her set, Wolf tweeted a few messages in defense of her material, specifically in regards to her pointed jabs at Sanders.
"I'm never really sure what to call Sarah Huckabee Sanders.
Is it Sarah Sanders, Sarah Huckabee Sanders," Wolf said at the dinner.
"Is it Cousin Huckabee? Is it Auntie Huckabee Sanders? Like, what's Uncle Tom but for white women who disappoint other white women?".
