In this video we're going to go through how to rearrange equation that involves
addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. When solving math equations
like this we need to follow the order of operation like PEMDAS or BODMAS.
We start by solving anything inside the parentheses and then we take care of any
exponents after that we take care of any multiplication and division and finally
we add and subtract. Therefore when we need to rearrange an equation that looks
like this it has multiplication, addition, division, will need to follow this rule
as well but we need to do it in reverse order, so the first step we need to do is
to subtract or add and in this case since we are solving for temperature in
Celsius, our goal is to rearrange the equation so that Celsius will be by
itself and everything else is on the other side. So we are going to move
degrees Celsius all by itself. So we see that this whole term is added to 32.
Therefore what we'll do is the opposite of addition which is subtraction. Let's
subtract 32 on both sides. Next in reverse PEMDAS is division and
multiplication. Since 9 over 5 is multiplied to degrees Celsius we will
need to get rid of it by multiplying with 5 over 9 on both sides. Note 5 over 9
is meant to be multiplied with the entire term on the left-hand side which
is F minus 32, so we need to put a bracket there like that. Since we don't
have exponents and parentheses to deal with we'll go ahead and simplify the
equation temperature in degree Celsius is equals to 5 over 9 times the entire
thing F - 32 temperature in Fahrenheit - 32. We're done just keep in mind when
rearranging any equations that involves mixtures of operations like addition,
subtraction, division, multiplication, exponents and even parentheses, be sure
to use the reverse PEMDAS so that you'll be able to rearrange the equations correctly.
