The World's Next Ocean - Duration: 3:42.
[INTRO ♪]
On September 14, 2005, there was an earthquake in a remote part of Afar, a region in northern Ethiopia.
It wasn't very strong, but it was the first of many.
Over the next 12 days, there were over a hundred more quakes, most of them also relatively small.
Then, on September 26, a nearby volcano called Dabbahu erupted.
This was its first eruption in recorded history, and it came from a flat part of the volcano a few kilometers from the summit.
The eruption didn't do too much harm—no people were seriously hurt, and at most it killed a couple hundred goats and camels.
But it opened up a gigantic crack in the earth, which grew to 60 kilometers long and as much as eight meters wide—in only ten days.
And as you can probably imagine, this caught the attention of geologists around the world.
It turns out that as dramatic as it was, the crack was just one of the latest symptoms of an ongoing seismic shake-up in Africa that's eventually going rip the continent in two, leading to the creation of a brand-new ocean.
Right now, eastern Africa is going through a process called rifting, where the tectonic plates that make up the Earth's crust and upper mantle pull apart from each other.
A giant plume of magma rising from deep inside the mantle is forcing the African and Arabian plates away from one another, forming a rupture in the Earth's surface.
The result is the Great Rift Valley, which stretches more than 3000 kilometers through the eastern part of the continent.
Scientists have been studying the Great Rift Valley since around the turn of the 20th century, when an English geologist named John Gregory encountered it for the first time.
Even though the theory of plate tectonics wouldn't be fully accepted for another 50 years or so, he realized how important it might be.
The valley is a system of several fractures that began forming at different times, and it's home to lots of seismic activity.
The pressure from tons of magma bubbling up is what leads to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions like what happened in 2005.
For a study published in 2018, scientists installed two seismic networks in Ethiopia and Eritrea.
And these networks of seismographs recorded almost 5,000 earthquakes of at least magnitude 2.0 in two years.
All that activity has spawned other volcanoes, too—one, called Nyamuragira, erupted fifteen times between 1894 and 1979.
What's happening in eastern Africa is actually more common at the bottom of the ocean, where magma bubbling up into tectonic rifts forms features called seafloor ridges and helps drive the movement of continental plates.
But the activity in Africa is giving geologists a chance to study the process up close—no submarines needed.
As it turns out, what happened in 2005 was that a huge length of the rift cracked open all at once, beginning with the volcanic eruption and spreading in both directions from there.
This was a bit of a surprise to scientists, who previously thought that such cracks—on the ocean floor as well as on land—only broke open a little bit at a time.
Eventually, the Horn of Africa is going to split off from the rest of the continental plate and go its own way.
Large areas of the Great Rift valley are below sea level, cut off from the ocean only by a small piece of higher land in Eritrea.
So when the split finally happens, seawater is going to come flooding into the rift, turning the Horn of Africa into an island and creating a new ocean.
Odds are none of us will actually get to see the new ocean.
The process has been happening slowly for about 30 million years, and the rift is only widening at an average rate of a couple of centimeters a year.
So, it will probably be tens of millions of years before traveling from Sudan to Somalia requires a boat.
But in the meantime, we get to watch our planet reshape itself, giving us a teaser for what the world will look like long after we're gone.

Before coming to the Senate, Harris served as California's attorney general.
Harris is seen as a rising star among Democrats and she is often mentioned as a possible candidate for president in 2020.
Harris has been leading the charge against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.
She is seen as a champion of progressive causes and a vocal opponent of President Donald Trump.

Harris Says She 'Isn't Ruling Out' a Presidential Run in 2020.
Back in June, Harris did an interview on MSNBC's "KasieDC.
At first, Harris brushed aside questions about whether she plans to run for president.
"I'm focused on a lot of other things as a higher priority," Harris said.
She said that the 2018 midterm elections, which may see Democrats gain seats in Congress, were a more immediate concern for her, and she said that the midterms were a higher priority for her than the 2020 presidential race.
But, when she was pressed about a presidential run Harris said, "I'm not ruling it out, no." Harris, 53, is the daughter of immigrants and grew up in California.
Her father is Jamaican American and her mother immigrated from Tamil Nadu, in India, to study at the University of California.
A Washington Post Poll Ranks Harris Fifth on a List of Possible 2020 Candidates.
A poll published by the Washington Post asked people to rank Democrats according to their name recognition and whether they would consider voting for them.
You can see that poll here.
Harris ranked number five on that poll, coming in behind Joe Biden, Bernie Sander, Elizabeth Warren, and Hillary Clinton.
Notably, she ranked higher than Oprah Winfrey.
She also did significantly better than Democratic standard bearers like Andrew Cuomo and Bill DeBlasio.
Harris Has Been a High-Profile Opponent of Kavanaugh.
Harris sits on the Senate Judiciary Committee, which has been holding confirmation hearings for Brett Kavanaugh, President Trump's nominee for the Supreme Court.
Harris used her seat on the committee to question Kavanaugh about his possible connection to the Mueller probe.
Harris's persistent questions — and Kavanaugh's awkward responses — went viral, prompting some to wonder whether Harris was trying to raise her profile for a possible presidential run.
Since then, a number of women have come forward to accuse Kavanaugh of sexually inappropriate behavior.
Harris has been a strong supporter of Kavanaugh's accusers, tweeting regularly about the need for an investigation into Kavanaugh's alleged behavior.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Harris had taken out dozens of anti-Kavanaugh ads the day before a hearing into the Supreme Court nominee.
The Wall Street Journal reported that anyone who clicked on the ads was redirected to Harris's campaign page and asked whether they want to make a donation.
Harris is not up for re-election to the Senate.
Harris Has Made a Name for Herself Defending Immigrants.
Harris has used her platform as senator to speak out on behalf of DREAMers and to call for the rights of all immigrants to be defended.
She was an outspoken opponent of the Trump administration's policy of separating families at the US-Mexico border She has also spoken out in defense of DACA, or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals.
Harris says that as a California native, defending DACA comes naturally:.
"It is about being the voice of a state with … the largest number of Dreamers," Harris told the Sacramento Bee.
"They must be seen and heard, and I feel a very strong sense of responsibility to use every component of power that I have in terms of my voice and ability to educate the public to make sure they are seen and not vilified.".
Harris Was Born in California to Immigrant Parents.
Kamala Harris was born in 1964 in Oakland, California.
Her father, who was originally from Jamaica, taught economics at Stanford University.
Her mother, originally from Tamil Nadu in India, was a cancer researcher.
Her maternal grandfather was an Indian diplomat.
Harris's sister Maya is a public policy advocate.
Harris studied public policy at Howard University before going on to earn a law degree at Hastings College.
She served as assistant district attorney in Oakland and then was elected California's attorney general in 2010.
Harris is married to Douglas Emhoff, an intellectual property rights lawyer.
Emhoff has three children from a previous marriage.

hello Mays it is Monday morning I just finished going to breakfast with a dad
you still like going grocery shopping over the weekend but now I don't like it
anymore because I like vlogging it for you guys and I like vlogging during the
week and I've been trying to relax on weekends because I even work on weekends
you guys it's just it's too much I just get to like workaholic I go into work
mode like seven days a week but it is just too much Pisces Virgo Scorpio take
it easy okay Friday we we don't shopping to Bournemouth but it's not my favorite
mall it's probably my least favorite mall to be honest with you but I
actually did find a few things starting to get cold you guys today it is
officially really cold I am in a hoodie right now so we are going to be
obviously going to the grocery store I'm hoping to find something there that I
can quickly grab and eat so for those of you who didn't hear over my IG I
announce that I have introduced two pieces of my own merch I have a crewneck

Canadian and I got an extra small it is again very oversized for an extra small
it's right on the sweater and I'm just so in love with it I cannot like it goes
so nice with the jeans that I'm wearing right now y'all I don't think y'all
ready for this every time I walk into H&M and forever 21 I always stop on the

here I got these in a size small and the crewneck to match it they actually had
the hoodie but again I told y'all I'm more of a crewneck sweatshirt coming out
only when I'm feeling a little bit frisky stuff sometimes you need to like
watch your mouth $14.99 and it is a size small like when I have this all on it's
just way too masculine for me so I have to do something to kind of make it a
little bit more feminine and I made a cut now I can't find it but whatever I'm
going to be cropping the sweatshirt and making it a little bit more of a
feminine flair to it it charted with Amy and she's like why
is it that when you try on like a full like a boy outfit it does not like suit
you - well you have to do something like feminine it doesn't suit me it's going
to die but I said to Amy I'm like Amy I can all wear this I'm like I look like
El Chapo in jail like I can't do this like chick I feel perfect the set is so
this is the small this is how the pants fit on me it's absolutely perfect
it's just too masculine for me if I don't cut this so I'm gonna end up like
cropping it and chopping it a little bit to add some feminine Flair but this is
the like ultimate perfect you still want to
look cute but you want to be absolutely comfortable and still trendy this is
what you go and wear I feel like this is just such a basic set that you can use
at any time during the fall and winter and again I've linked it down below
and on my website so I have just tried on the extra small legging you guys can
also do like a zip up sweaters over top you can use the original crewneck over
top the H&M really super thick by the way I'm wearing it right now and it's
just so super warm these ones are nice and fitted and it's
just so nice and snug and I love when it's like that but this is I will say my
ultimate ultimate ultimate favorite new sweater
how cute is a look and again I'm still wearing my white Nike Presto's this is
if you want to be super comfy but you still want to look hella cute in winter
and fall you guys are like me and do not like carrying jackets around with you oh
my god I can no I I just I'm not really a jacket sort of person guys don't I
always suggest to get like really heavy sweaters that are super warm just like
this one so that you can kind of avoid wearing a jacket that's what I've been
doing tipping off Suzy's pasta to winters
oh I almost forgot to show you this last piece and I actually got one a while
back from H&M at this very perfect nude one that I'm going to show you guys next
everybody was asking on IG where this one is from it is from Suzy shear will

I'm gonna be wearing this when I do like an all grey outfit or a reason where I
have this one underneath was because I bought this wine at a couple weeks
previously I found this one at hmmm it's a little bit different the zipper is
silver it's one from H&M is a size medium ultimate plush nude sweater it is

guys are my size I would suggest going with the medium you wanted to be baggy
just go a size up from your normal so I'm a small I got a medium so if this is
what I'm gonna wear to the grocery store I have folded all my new sweaters
because those I kind of like to take photos in them and keep them in one spot
because I haven't taken any yet with them I have my guest crossbody bag I've
actually linked a couple similars on Stephanie said oh calm I'm wearing my
original crewneck sweatshirt and now we're gonna go a grocery shopping so now
we are here at Zoe's I just got here we're gonna do our grocery shopping I
actually made a list just because I'm planning a couple of meals for a wedding
in a day so let's get going I'm gonna get

trunk because Amy bought that and sugar didn't like it so I'm keeping it for my

for one tablespoon is 15 calories so we're gonna compare it well well well
look at this Hines has the organic version too but it's 5 calories more per
tablespoon we've got it both hands we just got to do it the next thing we're
looking for is Pam my spray that I use literally like every single day of my
life okay fine we might have to get the complements version which I don't really
mind you know what they're on sales so I'm gonna get to okay I don't know
probably go blind at the grocery store or something like the cilantro situation
but the olive oil one is right there for whatever of course we need some eggs for
everyday breakfast okay I'm gonna get these
compliments organic ones okay I'm gonna be picking up some chicken breasts here
because I'm gonna be doing like a Mediterranean sandwich I'm gonna be
doing my veggie mashed potato with some steak so I'm gonna get this to do with

literally three of these so the very last thing that I just got is Aunt
Jemima syrup from a pancakes I haven't been able to find any other syrup that I
like you guys have suggested it but I still haven't found that company now I
can't remember but when I see it I will know it because we don't have everything
here in Canada but this one I got the late version and it says three
tablespoons is 80 calories and we're done with our grocery we just finished
up our grocery shopping and that is all that we got today
there's gonna be a wedding today coming up soon on the channel I know you guys
love those so I can't wait to do this one for you particularly excited about
this one because we got a steak dinner coming your way I said it I said strike
and I like my steak rare how do you guys like your steak do you guys think that's
gross because I think it's like awesome but yeah and by the way I am loving

2019 Mustang Review: Hitting the Bullitt Points - Duration: 6:04.
Off the heels of the 10 millionth Mustang rolling off the assembly line the 2019 Mustangs
are finally hitting our lots.
With refreshed looks from last year's mid-model update the Mustang cruises into the 2019 model
with some fresh additions as well, including what you see here.
The famed 2019 Bullitt Edition!
A car with a rich history dating back to Steve McQueen's famous car chase scene in the
1968 Mustang GT, the Bullitt is infamous.
Ford knows just how special the Bullitt is and after its 2001 and 2008 versions it was
only fitting that the S550 chassis receive the Bullitt treatment as well.
But that's not all 2019 adds to the most famous pony car in history there is much more
to explore so let's take a look at the 2019 Ford Mustang!
The looks of the latest generation should be a familiar commonplace to most everyone
by now.
But this year with the addition of the Bullitt it is sure to break even more necks as it
passes by.
The signature dark green and striking exterior features are back.
Taking the less is more approach the debagged front grille is menacing along with the famous
5 spoke heritage wheels.
With the Bullitt though you get much more than just the looks, you get the performance
and all of top of the line features that the Mustang has.
Starting with performance the Bullitt Mustang packs a powerful punch with 480 horses under
your left foot from its screaming 5.0 liter V8 and bangs through the 6 speed manual transmission
as it outruns the competition.
The active valve performance exhaust screams from its quad tips with signature black nitro
plate providing the classic Ford V8 rumble.
On the interior the Bullitt comes equipped with optional supportive RECARO seats which
are perfect for keeping you put while hugging the turns.
The design is unmistakable with its green accent stitching, a spindrift aluminum instrument
panel, a 12 inch LCD digital instrument cluster and a heated Bullitt branded steering wheel
along with a unique white cue ball shifter knob.
The 2019 Bullitt is a respectable throwback to McQueen's legendary 1968!
The Bullitt however is not the ONLY 2019 of note.
2019 also marks the return of the California Special package on the premium Mustang GT.
With this package you get unique 19 inch machined face wheels, unique front grilles with offset
tribar pony logo, a pedestal rear spoiler, the performance package front splitter, as
well as California special badging on the interior and exterior side stripes.
The Mustang beyond looking pretty is about one other thing.
Performance.
The 2019 Mustang does not slack on performance in any variation.
Three engines are available.
A 2.3L EcoBoost that produces 310 horsepower and 350 foot pounds of torque, the famed 5.0L
coyote kicks out 460 horses and 420 foot pounds of torque and the Voodoo flat plane crank
5.2L in the GT350 has 526 horsepower and 429 foot pounds of torque.
There are optional 6 speed standard shift transmissions as well as the new 10 speed
automatic with steering wheel mounted paddle shifters.
The 2019 Mustang also features a performance package for both the 4 and 8 cylinder engines.
The Ecoboost performance package gives you a 3.55 TORSEN limited slip dif, 19 inch ebony
wheels, and larger brake rotors with four piston calipers.
The GT performance package includes 19 inch wheels, brembo six piston front brake calipers
a TORSEN limited slip dif, a special gauge pack and unique springs plus a ton of other
features including a unique spoiler.
To step up your game the performance pack level 2 adds Magneride damping system with
track calibration and wide wheels and tires for ultimate grip.
The Mustang also allows you to customize your driving experience with variable drive modes
that include normal, wet/snow, track and drag strip.
The 2019 is the most technologically advanced Mustang of all time with amazing features
none more amazing than the new digital dash.
From here you can change your gauge layout depending on drive mode or even customize
it to your liking including colors and what gauges are displayed.
This is also where you can access your track apps.
With track apps you can track your performance metrics such as g-forces, acceleration, and
even lap times.
Here is where you can also utilize features like electronic line lock which allows you
to spin and heat your tires, and the launch control system to ensure those perfect starts
at the track.
For entertainment the Sync 3 infotainment system is available and features smartphone
connectivity with apple car play and android auto.
And the new B&O sounds system will blow you away with its deep bass and rich sounds.
When you opt of the Ford Safe and Smart package you get a slew of driver assist technologies
such as pre-Collison assist with pedestrian detection, lane keeping, adaptive cruise control,
auto high beams, emergency braking, forward collision warning and even rain sensing wipers.
With the 2019 Mustang being this cool, there is no wonder over 10 million have been produced.
