CNN 10 - August 5, 2017 | Black History Month in the U.S. - Duration: 10:01.

Happy to have you watching CNN STUDENT NEWS. I`m Carl Azuz. We`ve got a lot of ground to

cover today, starting in Afghanistan. The U.S. has more than 33,000 troops there, supporting

the military mission that began in 2001. Many of those troops will be coming home this year.

The question is, will some stay to train Afghan troops and help them fight terrorists? The

U.S. wants Afghan president Hamid Karzai to sign an agreement about this. Because he hasn`t,

President Obama is threatening to pull all U.S. troops out of Afghanistan by the end

of December.

Why this is happening? It`s because the U.S. says it`s really running out of patience with

Karzai. He`s indicated he won`t sign that security agreement that would be the legal

framework for troops to stay there after the end of 2014. With no agreement, U.S. troops

would have to go. They can`t get him to sign, so President Obama publicly now saying plan

for a full troop withdrawal.

A government official from Pakistan says that would be a mistake. He says, without some

U.S. troops in Afghanistan, the country would have a civil war.

Time for "The Shoutout." What`s the only South American country whose official language is

Portuguese? If you think you know it, shout it out!

Is it Argentina, Portugal, Brazil or Guyana? There are several world nations whose official

language is Portuguese. But the only one in South America is Brazil. That`s your answer

and that`s your "Shoutout."

Favela is a Portuguese word dating back to the 1940s. It translates to shantytown, or

slum. An event coming soon to Brazil could bring a lot of money to some of Rio de Janeiro

favelas. The FIFA World Cup, the biggest and most watched sporting event on the planet

takes off on June 12. It will play out in Brazil over a month, and as the supply goes

down for places where can stay, demand goes up as do prices and opportunities.

Some of the best views in Rio from some of the cheapest rooms in town. World Cup fans,

take note: Rio de Janeiro`s one infamous shantytowns or favelas have opened their doors to tourists.

Dutch backpacker Michael Blommers says it`s the only way to go.

If they want to see the World Cup, want to see some football matches and - experience

a true Brazilian life, they should really come to a favela and just check this out.

As the hostels along the beach, which usually go for around $40 will cost as much as $400

a night. Many hotels will charge over $1,000. But a bunk here at Alto Vigigal (ph) will

cost just $65. Four times the normal price, but still, a bargain.

Cheapest price around, actually.

Still, in many ways, visitors really do have to slum it. Garbage piles up along the roads,

electricity, water and sewage services are spotty at best. And transportation precarious.

And then, there is security. Just a few years ago, Rio`s favelas were controlled by drug

lords. Police have since stormed many of them, so called pacification. Driving out armed

gangs in an effort to make it relatively safe for residents and visitors.

With all these tourists coming up here now, people have opened up shops in their own homes.

This guy right down here is selling handy crafts and then right up here, there is a

new tapioca sandwich shop, which I have to say, sounds pretty good to me. Let`s go try

it.

"People are opening up little hotels, because demand keeps growing," he says. Indeed, upstairs

his cousin has built a one bedroom that she`s going to rent for $500 during the World Cup.

In other favelas the pacification efforts have had mixed success. In Hosigna (ph), Maria

Clara Du Santos, says she could hear the recent shootouts from her terrace.

She rents rooms in her bright yellow house to foreign tourists. And she says safety depends

on knowing where and where not to go.

That hasn`t stopped visitors in search of a more authentic experience and, of course,

the great views.

Shasta Darlington, CNN, Rio de Janeiro.

At the beginning of black history month, we explored some inspiring words from African

American historic figures. As February wraps up, we are reporting on some of those who

were making a difference today. We`ll start with a pair of politically minded people.

First, meet Chelsea Henry. She`s been named a rising start by the Republican National

Committee. Last year, she spoke at the Conservative Political Action Conference and two years

ago, she was the youngest Republican delegate to the party`s national convention.

Next, meet Atima Omara. She`s the first African American to lead the young Democrats for America.

And in 2013, she was named one of "Ebony" magazines Power 100. It honors some of the

world`s emerging leaders.

Here`s Kimberly Bryan. She started a program called "Black Girls Code," which we`ve covered

before on our show. Bryan`s program teaches computer coding to young people. She says

her students are able to take what they learn from their classes and use it to advance in

other areas of their lives.

It takes a great deal of character to leave the people you love to serve the country you

love. And while we love to show military homecomings usually involving U.S. service men and women

surprising their kids, today`s character study is about how students celebrated an airman

and a teacher at Linda Jobe Middle School in Mansfield, Texas.

Each of you are a participant today.

Call it a well-executed mission at Linda Jobe Middle School. With students assembled, his

wife waiting in the shadows, Air Force tech sergeant Troy Harvey walked in to one surprising

pep rally. His own.

Student council members planned the whole thing. To let their beloved teacher and coach

know how much he was missed during his four months in Afghanistan.

(INAUDIBLE) as we celebrate that his return, please stand and put your hearts up for Harvey.

It`s a message that Air Force veteran clearly received, time and time again.

They go to the trouble they did to set this up, and to express their things and love.

It`s just amazing.

I`m physically relaxing, probably for the first time in about four months.

Principal Elizabeth Hostin says her football, basketball and leadership coach has a calming

presence that permeates the school.

Having him here just gives all of us a sense of piece and comfort.

So, having him back in their hallways?

He`s just like a ball of joy, like. He brings happiness wherever he comes.

Students say now that is the perfect reason to cheer.

Let`s see who is watching us there. It`s time for the CNN STUDENT NEWS "Roll Call."

Pocatello High School, home of the Indians. You are on today`s roll. Glad to have you

online in Pocatello, Idaho.

How about Hinesburg? It`s in Vermont. It`s where the red hogs are checking us out at

Champlain Valley Union High School and in the Orange State, it`s the bull dogs day.

Hi to the students of Crestview High School in Crestview, Florida.

Undulatus Asperatus, also known as River of the Sky. It`s a lot easier to say that nickname

and it`s a lot cooler to look at. Check this out. These undulating waves of clouds rolled

over Atlanta, Georgia the other morning. Though they are often seen in the plain states, they

are not common in the American southeast. And scientists aren`t sure what causes them.

They think it`s either a cold front meeting a warm front or a dry front meeting a humid

one. They do agree it`s a meeting of two fronts. And whatever the right answer is, it was beautiful

to those people who weren`t scared by it, and it gave us, commuters something to look

out besides traffic, which sometimes moves slower than the clouds.

You can`t really call it a fish story, but it is a sight to see. This dolphin named Chance

is an artist, by chance. His brush is custom-made using a pool noodle. His masterpiece is made

by mouth. He is a rescue. Chance was found three years ago, stranded on an Alabama beach.

He`s been recovering at the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies in Mississippi. His

rehabilitation has allowed him to brush up on some new skills. He`s a regular Leonardo

Dolphinci. A Paul Cezanne. A Fincent Van Gogh. A Marine Cassatt (ph), an Edward Flipper,

a Georges Seurat (ph). Teaching him to paint with a stroke of genius, we`re sure he has

a massive fin club. Art critics need to get in the swim, because this mammalian Matisse

isn`t taking a dive. He`s making waves, yo. I`m Carl Azuz for CNN STUDENT NEWS.

TROUBLE IN PARADISE - Sailing Luckyfish Ep 20 - Duration: 19:36.

Have you ever wondered why you want to cruise on a sailboat?

She can see the wee mooring that we saw the other day when we were swimming.

Until now, our focus has been on crossing the Atlantic Ocean

and getting to the other side.

Next to the, powerboat.

Now we were in Barbados, there was a certain sense of anti-climax.

The Caribbean was certainly a prize, but the journey to get here

was in many ways a larger prize.

Turn to her left a little bit now.

We have a quiz for you , about this, at the end of the video…

What she can do is go fast at the beach, and then turn the motor off.

One morning, we hopped in the dinghy to head back to Crane Beach.

On the way, I was well overdue for a haircut and this place looked about as safe as any.

Im not sure we met eye to eye on styles though.

So we are going to Bathsheba next

Bathsheba.

What's in Bathsheba?

Its a nice name, and thats all we know.

There is supposed to be something special there.

What do you reckon?

Straight.

I dont know.

Sorry [laughs]

Bathsheba was a pretty beach on the Atlantic coast but not suitable for swimming.

What can I do for you?

Show me your hair.

My hair. Super short.

2 month hair cut.

Bajan hairstyle.

At Crane Beach the girls were about to meet surf for the first time.

They had been preparing for this, in a way, since way back in Mongolia where they learned

to swim before learning to sail.

Mongolia is a landlocked country, and swimming is not common.

By learning to swim, the girls gained confidence in living with the sea.

Back on the mooring and Tuya is eyeing off the fishing activity all around us

In the evenings boats go spot lighting with a cast net and catch flying fish

We tried to work out what this guy was fishing for.

How do you catch them Tuya?

I just want to know how you catch them?

Bait and hook.

50cm or so there is a weight.

So right on the bottom.

But, what I want to know is he catching big fish or not?

Are you an expert on fishing?

Fishing?

Talk to me about fishing, what do you want to know?

Particularly Wahoo.

Wahoo is my special subject.

In the evening about 29 minutes past 6, on the equator.

You have to be exactly on the Equator?

At 29 minutes past 6, 23 January, 2016

They are the Wahoo I catch.

And I nail every single one of them.

not one gets away.

I will fill your boat with fish!

Here is a nice tasty silver morsel for a hungry fish.

Alright.

I dont want to see the lure.

I want to see fish.

The boat had been stationary in Barbados for a week or so.

This had the effect of starving the Goose Barnacles and they were looking a little anemic.

It was an easy matter to remove them from the coppercoat with a kitchen scourer.

After 10 days on the island, and our fishing still rubbish, it was time to provision the

boat for our next adventure, a short 90 mile overnight sail to St Vincent.

We'd ordered a cruising guide book from the US and now it had arrived we were free

to go.

Possibly the shrimps are a better deal.

But what worries me are these fillets.

I'm a bit worried about their name, thats all.

What do you feel when you are leaving Barbados?

What do I feel?

I feel like we are leaving at exactly the right moment.

Barbados was exactly what we expected.

Not in a good way.

Very expensive and commercial, all the way down the West Coast.

But if you want to see the real Barbados, what's left of it....

then from Port St Charles, from 6 Mens, North, around Archer Bay, down to the East Coast.

Very nice.

But sadly Barbados is captured by the dollar God.

Bit sad.

Moving on.

Good.

The day before we left Barbados, we heard disturbing news of the murder of a German

charterer on his yacht at St Vincent.

This changed our plans abruptly and we decided not to cruise the islands outer bays,

opting instead to spend only a couple of days there,

in the security of the beautiful Blue Lagoon.

It has to be said that cruising does not make you immune from Greed and corruption.

Nor does it make you immune from the wealth inequality, poverty, drug abuse and drug related

violence that results from it.

Unfortunately drug trafficking in the Caribbean appears to be on the rise and bringing with

it burglaries and violent crimes.

It's my view that prohibiting drugs leads to far worse consequences and simply doesn't

work, just as it never worked for alcohol during the prohibition days of the 20's

and 30's.

Unfortunately though, the levers for legislative change may be in completely the wrong hands.

Well, behind us Barbados.

We left at 6pm last night.

We had a lovely overnight sail under a clear starry night.

Breeze is 10 to 15 knots, spinnaker up all the way.

Few ships that we crossed, half way across.

Mostly cruise liners all brightly lit.

And there we have St Vincent on the horizon.

The big volcano of Soufriere on the right.

Under the cloud the island, and then our channel is straight ahead.

Into Blue Lagoon.

Where we hope to pick up a marina berth, if not, anchor in the bay.

And then to the left, Bequia,

(pron. Bek'wee)

I think that is the pronounciation, if not its the best I can do.

Which apparently is a sailors paradise, northernmost island of the Grenadines.

And there are volcanic rocks sticking up - Bullet Island

and past that, not visible, is the island of Mustique, playground of the rich and famous.

What is this place, your arriving?

I have no idea honey, its just another island on the horizon.

I dont think we are the first to discover it, judging by the housing on this side.

How do you know its St Vincent.

We just followed all the road signs along the way.

OK, hopefully it is St Vincent.

Whats behind you?

Whats that place?

That place is Bequia

(pron. Bek'wee)

Thats next on our list as we head south towards Grenada.

Do people live there or not?

Pass.

I imagine so, yes.

OK, lots of adventures waiting for us.

Many adventures.

Next thing, now we have got a cruising guide, the next thing we need to buy

is some snorkelling gear.

You can see we have arrived in the Caribbean with very little preparation.

But, we are here, that is the main thing.

Alright, good luck, thank you.

Time to turn...

OK, do a nice wide turn

Slow down.

1.9, pretty shallow, 1.8...

put that hatch down there please

come over to this side and listen to the radio, Desmond is going to give us a call

What a spot eh?

Amazing.

Protected.

Very.

Incredible.

I have brought the bow mooring line and the stern mooring line to the back end.

Because the back end is the bit he is going to see first.

So you will be able to pass him both lines from the back end.

And he will tie her off.

This forward one, there, I have brought it back so you will be able to pass both

Im going to pass him these two ropes?

Yeah.

From the side?

Yeah.

You will see why.

We are going to come in backwards, so the end of the pier will be there and pass them both to him

Or, we might be tied off the side of another boat.

There is another Wharram here.

Where?

Ohh, that one.

Dock master Desmond had called for a reverse berth, starboard side tie, squeezing in, right

in front of the restaurants.

Just what you need to get the heart rate up.

How deep is your keel?

1.2 ohhh, 4 ft.

As it turned out, docking the Wharram could not be easier.

With two engines in the middle of the boat and clear vision all around,

its an easy matter to put the boat where you want it.

At the beginning of this video I hinted that its the journey,

not the destination that matters.

With the tragic incident at St Vincent, that certainly felt true.

Things look up next week when we discover a spiritual home on the Island of Bequia,

a sailors paradise.

What we do after that with our videos – well, we want to ask you.

Should we:

A. continue with the Caribbean story to Grenada?

Or B. Re-wind the clock and travel to Mongolia and South Africa,

to where our challenge and our journey began?

And find out how two Mongolian girls ended up on a sailboat

in the middle of the ocean

Or C. should we mix it up with a little of both?

It's up to you, viewers.

Enter your choice below.

The first 30 comments will make the decision, and the majority rules!.

Good luck!

We hope you enjoyed this episode and we'd like to give a special thank you to new Patrons

Svein, Thomas and Geert

Its because of Patrons like you that make our productions sustainable so please, if

you haven't already, consider becoming a Patron for as little as a dollar a video and

become part of the Luckyfish story.

Feel free to question, comment and give us a like and sub below.

Until next time, thank you for watching.

Thats hunky European man with money.

You don't wave at the other guys in the drug, in the cocaine boats.

In future, dont wave at those ones.

Ok?

This though?.

No, see this one could be fishing or cocaine.

This one is definetly cocaine.

I mean that.

I had someone say to me in Sth Africa, "Are you going to go across the Atlantic to the

Caribbean in that"?

So I mustered up the courage and said "Yes".

Whats your problem, you know?

So girls, are you looking forward to your $19 salad?

Maybe with and extra shrimp for another $9?

The more expensive it is, the better it is.

Is that right?

Thats my new rule.

Im not sure I like this rule.

Not sure how sustainable it is.

You will get used to it.

Papas Con Chile (Vegan and Omnivore Friendly!!!) - Duration: 3:34.

Welcome folks, today we're making one of my favorite comfort foods: Papas con Chile

which my grandma's been making for her family since my mom was a child. And

this is an easy, delicious dish. Right, grandma? [Speaking in Spanish]

Awesome sauce! So we start with making our tomato and chili salsa. You don't

have to core your tomatoes or disembowel your Chile's like we do but it's how we

live. We also live dangerously and don't wear gloves which we came to regret so

be smarter than us. Now we need to cook our components, which you can do a number

of ways including boiling, grilling or fire roasting. My preferred method is

broiling because I'm dramatic and it's quick. I also like that with

broiling there isn't much guesswork. Once the skins are black they're good to go

Mmm... check that Carbon. An easy way to peel them is to be patient and let them chill

or if you're impatient, have a bowl of ice water ready to go to keep your

fingers from getting burned. Once your produce is peeled, it's time to mix it up.

This time we used the food processor because it is very easy to over process

with the Vitamix. My grandma occasionally does this step in the molcajete and says

it's the best method, but usually she keeps it real and just uses the Vitamix.

You'll need to add water if you broiled like we did and irregardlessly you'll

need to add granulated garlic and salt. We process all the tomatoes but took it

easy on the chilies because Sean can't handle the spicy. Do it to your liking.

It's okay if this salsa is a bit watery because any excess moisture will get

cooked out when we add it to the sizzling potatoes. Speaking of which it's

time to get those potato sizzling. Peel, rinse,

cut them in half lengthwise, then cut into half-inch slices. We flex on a

mandolin for that easy uniformity. Heat up a big pan with some oil till it's

shimmering and toss them taters in there. I make this in a pan that sticks because

I heat the oil pretty hot and non-stick pans aren't meant for high heat. Let the

potatoes get fried up but not too fried. The potatoes will break if you're doing

it right. Should look straight rustic.

Once the potatoes are looking awesome, drain any excess oil if need be.

Salt potatoes and drop a salsa bomb on your pan.

We recommend making a big batch of salsa or you might have to add a bit of water

to your potatoes like we did. Mix it up and scrape the bottom of your pan. Simmer

for a few minutes and you're good to go!

This is a great dish by itself, but my personal favorite way to have it is in a

burrito. If you want cheese in your burrito, we usually go with a combination

of a melty one like Mozz or Monterey and a salty crumbly one like cotija or feta.

We like to wrap our burritos in foil and keep them in the fridge or throw them in

a bag and freeze them as backup burritos. They heat up great in the microwaves but

we prefer leaving them in the foil, heating them in the oven and unwrapping

them once they are hot in the middle to let the exterior crisp up a little. Also,

if you need more fried food in your diet, they are great fried in a pan with some

olive oil. We hope at least seven people make these and let us know what you

think. Check out TwoHungryCooks.com for the full post and more recipes. And

remember: Keep on cooking on!

IS JAPAN REALLY THAT UNIQUE?! Japanese girls and boys compare fashion - Duration: 11:46.

I look at other people and am surprised that you can wear it in that way too.

This is what I normally wear. I don't think it's unique.

When your skirt is fluffy it might already look unique.

Hey it's Cathy Cat and today we've come to brilliant star decorations.

And event that combines fashion shows, but also music and musicals.

There are a lot of fancy dressed customers. We will interview not only

the customers but also some special guests that are here.

This time we will ask them "What is so unique about Japanese fashion?"

Let's go and Ask Japanese.

Abroad we say that Japanese fashion is very unique.

What is actually so unique about it?

We are mixing fashion from abroad and also cute things from Japan.

I think what's so unique is the way we arrange those styles.

I like Japanese fashion but I actually also like Barbie and other cute things.

So I adapt both cultures and change my style by mixing both.

And I think that way we can all create our own cute styles.

There are many cool stores that make things like these.

There are many single creators that add the uniqueness to our fashion world.

We have Lolita fashion, Gothic Lolita, Goth, Punk

all those people make it unique.

What is so unique about all those styles?

Japan used to be a culture of kimonos.

But we started liking fashion from abroad.

And thus created new styles that are fun and unique.

What do you like about its uniqueness?

You can express yourself.

Also the way you wear the same item can make it look different from others'.

You can wear the same item. But depending on how you wear it...

it will look like a different style.

I look at other people and am surprised that you can wear it in that way too.

We have Japanese style traditional clothes but also Western fashion.

This exchange changes depending on the season.

I think that's probably it.

The way we all wear our clothes is different.

Its fun to just look at how others wear it.

Unique...

we all have an aesthetic vision of the world around us.

There is no general one popular style.

But with events like these you can really dress up and go out in style.

People from abroad might see this and think it's curious.

I think Japan has recently started to accept people being unique.

I think abroad this is a little bit harder.

They might look at us and think "wow they are really exotic"

This is what I normally wear. I don't think it's unique.

Us people who wear it might not think we are that unique.

We just want to wear our styles, just want to look cool and fashionable.

That's why we do it.

I think that has raised the expectations abroad.

We can mix different genres and get away with it.

I think that's what is so unique about us.

We have our own Japanese fashion but also get gothic skirts from Japan...

But we are free to coordinate it the way we want and that makes it interesting.

Japan imports a lot of western themes and arranges them.

We put it together in a very Japanese way.

Wouldn't it be that

There are many people who have a story in their hearts.

or who carry a certain aura.

Others might perceive this as a certain uniqueness.

I think what's unique is that we mix Japanese, asian and western themes.

In what way?

We can wear traditional Japanese clothes with Western accessories

Or add Japanese styles to Western themes.

A good example would be the recently evolved China Lolita style.

And we can wear that normally here.

I am mixing Chinese and Japanese lolita today.

We are more tolerant towards those mixes.

In the west you can't really wear a Kimono, it wouldn't mix in well.

In Japan we have the kimono culture, the western fashion culture,

and the chinese fashion culture. We mix it all.

We can wear different traditional fashion without it looking weird.

I don't really perceive it as unique.

There are many cultures, manga and such we have.
