Good morning and welcome to my Emojiathon vlog which is also going to be my
March 2018 reading wrap-up. It's March first so today is the first day of the
emojiathon and I wanted to take a minute to kind of explain to you how this vlog will
work. Usually with readathon vlogs I'll take you guys around with me, tell
you when I'm up to during the week or during the day or however long the
read-a-thon is. This time around because this read-a-thon is taking place over
the course of an entire month, I figured I'd combine the two and do more talking
about the books that I'm reading and less talking about what I'm actually up
to. I might mention here and there what I'm up to. For example, right now I'm
driving to work. The focus of this is going to be wrapping up the books that I
read during the month. If you didn't get to see what my plans are for the emojiathon,
I'm going to leave a link to the video in the cards that kind of explains
everything. So you're curious as to what I'll be reading this month it's all over
there. But for this vlog I am going to just be turning the camera on every time
I finish a book and telling you my thoughts about the book, giving you my
rating, giving you like a quick little mini review, things like that. That's what
this vlog is really going to entail and hopefully you guys enjoy it. I'm
looking forward to an excellent month of reading and I'm looking forward to
reviewing my first book for you which for me will be in a couple of days but
for you we'll probably be in about 20 seconds. Anyway I am going to start my
audiobook for this read-a-thon which is Outlander and it's going to probably
take me the whole month to get through it but I have a long commute so I can
probably get through it within this month. Fingers crossed. And I will check
in with you guys in a couple of days. Hello! It is the 5th
of March and I have just finished my first book today of March and that is
Tell the Wolves I'm Home by Carol Rivka Brunt. I loved this book. It was really
really good and it's one of those books where I felt like I didn't know how I
felt about it until like the very end but this book studies familial
relationships in such a interesting and real way. The complexity between like a
sibling relationship, between a person you feel really close to in your family,
and it's just, it's really - the way Carol Rivka Brunt did this was really
realistic feeling. It felt really real and I just really appreciated that. This
also takes place in the 80s during the AIDS epidemic in the United States so it
discusses that a lot, and kind of the fears people had surrounding AIDS at
that time and the lack of knowledge that the public had about the disease which
was really interesting. I don't think I've read a book that discussed that at
all so that was really interesting as well. I really really enjoyed this. I gave
it five stars and if you're looking for a interesting family relationship
focused kind of book this is a really good one to pick up. I would really
really highly recommend this one. It takes you on a journey for sure and I
just really appreciated it. This has been sitting on my shelf for like a year and
a half and I'm like kicking myself for not picking it up sooner, but I finally
did and really enjoyed it. This book fulfills my shrug emoji challenge for
Emojiathon and I'm just really happy that I picked it up. Five stars. I
finished my second book of March today and that was
My Grandmother Sends Her Regards and Apologizes I absolutely adored this book.
This book is kind of exactly what I look for in a book. It's not particularly plot
driven but the characters in here are just amazing. Literally from the first
page I could tell that I was going to love the characters, I was going to love
the book, and I did the whole way through. It's told from a seven-year-old's
perspective and it's just kind of her getting to know her neighbors in her
building because when her grandmother passes away she kind of sends her on a
treasure hunt to meet all of these people that live in her building and
it's just so wonderful and I love the main character Elsa's kind of view of
the world and it's just - It captured my heart. It didn't let go the whole time
and I absolutely loved it and I will not be surprised if this ends up on my
favorites list of 2018. So I of course gave this five stars and highly, highly, highly,
recommend that you check it out yourself. This is the only book I'm reading this
month that is not going to count for any of the Emojiathon challenges, but I
loved it just the same and really hope that you pick it up sometime soon. It's
the 13th of March and since I last talked to you I have finished two books
so I thought I would tell you about them. The first book that I finished was
Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo. This is the second installment of the Six of
Crows duology and I did enjoy this one a lot more. However I thought this could
have been about a hundred and fifty pages shorter. I was really mainly
concerned about like the main cast of characters and them accomplishing the
goals that they like set out to accomplish at the beginning of this book
and I feel like we spent a lot of time learning more about the world, learning
more about some side characters that don't really have a big play in this duology,
and I just felt like there was a lot of wasted time in this book. However, the
scenes where the main cast of characters were a focal point, I really enjoyed them
and they were really well done, and it was really well paced and I just was
really interested in those scenes. So I'm gonna ultimately give this a four
out of five stars. It had the potential to like really be an explosive ending to
the series but unfortunately it fell a little bit flat, but I still really
enjoyed it so, four stars. This completed the hourglass emoji challenge which was
to read a book that you were currently in the middle of. And then I also
completed Eliza and Her Monsters by Francesca Zappia. I thought this book
was super adorable. It's about our main character Eliza who
creates a webcomic called Monstrous Sea that is extremely popular. She goes
to high school and is a bit of an introvert. She kind of is more focused on
her life online and then she meets a boy who starts at her school who ends up
being a fan of Monstrous Sea and is one of the most popular fan fiction writers
of the series. She knows who he is but he has no idea that she is the creator
of this webcomic and she has to try and keep it a secret from him. The romance
between these two characters is really, really cute and I feel like is really
really, honest for a teenage romance. I feel like it doesn't shy away from the,
you know, questions and uncertainty about different aspects of a romantic
relationship that you have when you're a teenager. There is a little bit of
discussion about sex as a teenager in here as well, which I think is really,
really important in YA literature, to really take those issues seriously
because these are the things that teens are talking about and wondering about
and I think that's handled really, really well. I also really enjoyed the online
friendships that Eliza had. I thought her two main friends I believe their names
are Max and Emmy, are really, really great and supportive and I really loved that
as well. There was a lot to really love about this book and I ultimately gave
this 4 out of 5 stars. This book fulfilled the brain emoji challenge
which was to read a book with mental illness representation in it. Since I
last checked in with you, I again read two more books and I need to talk to you
guys about them. So the first book that I finished was Eat Only When You're Hungry
by Lindsay Hunter. This is the book that I could fulfill the car emoji challenge
which is like, a book involving travel or a road trip book. This
is also my Book of the Month pick for my current 10 Book TBR and this was
definitely an interesting read. This is a book about a father who is looking for
his drug-addicted son. His son is in his 30s and he's gone missing
and he's looking all over to find him and he's he's rented an RV and he's just
like kind of driving around the state of Florida to see if he can find him and in
this book you find out a lot about his family history, both from his childhood
but also you know, his family with his son and his ex-wife who is the mother of
the son. About how their lives kind of came to be, his relationship with his son,
how a son became addicted to drugs and how that relationship kind of changed as
he was growing up and maturing and it also talks a bit about his addiction to
food and drinking and kind of how that is impacting his health in a really
negative way. So the big themes in this book are family and addiction and I
thought this was written in a really interesting way. It was written in a way
that like, I was continually intrigued about this story. It's one of those books
where just like, it's not extremely plot driven, but it's more like, a focus on how
addiction develops, where it kind of springs from, and people's reactions
surrounding addiction, not only with people that are loved ones of theirs, but
like addiction within your own self as well. I thought this was a really
enjoyable read. It's very fast. It's a 200 page book and I ended up giving
this four stars and I will give this an award for being one of my favorite book
covers that I have ever seen. I would just sit and stare at this cover and
just see like if I could like name all the snacks that were on here. So really
interesting and really enjoyable. And then I read Big Little Lies by Liane
Moriarty and oh my gosh. I haven't had that much fun reading a book in such
a long time. I read it on my Kindle and this fulfilled the camera emoji which is
a book that has been adapted. This was adapted I believe 2017 into an HBO
miniseries and I really want to watch it now. But this book was just so much fun
to read. It follows the lives of three women who are connected because all of
their children are going into the same kindergarten class and you know right
from the get-go of the book that a murder happens somewhere along the lines
within this community and it's just so entertaining. Like the characters, three
main characters, are just so different and intriguing and the way they interact
with each other and with the rest of the kindergarten parents is just so
hilarious. There were multiple times where I was laughing out loud at this
book and it's a thriller as well so you're trying to figure out who got
killed, how it happened, when it happened, like - and there's just like, so many
different like secrets that are intertwined in this book and it was just
so good and I can already tell it's gonna be on my favorites list for this
year. I just loved it so much. It's probably my favorite book that I've read
so far this year. If you haven't had the chance to read it yet, I totally
recommend it. I know it's a little bit more of a popular book but I'm just really
happy I got around to it. I thought it was great and I ended up giving it five
stars. I'm just getting home from work and the gym. Still got my coat on because
even though it's spring, it's still freezing in New England for some reason.
On my way home from work I finished Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte.
Anita and I were reading this together and I decided I wanted to listen to it
on audiobook. There are multiple free audiobooks of Jane Eyre on YouTube
so I decided to give the audiobook a try and I really enjoyed listening to
the audiobook. Classics tend to be a little bit more difficult to get through
so I figured I'll just listen to it on my commutes. That's totally fine and I
listen to it at work when I was working on different projects and things like
that. So - but I really enjoyed this. This was actually a really enjoyable classic.
It's of course about Jane Eyre and her life as a governess. This is known for
being one of the more feminist classics out there Jane Eyre as a character is
very much so an independent thinking woman. She challenges a lot of the ideas
of what it means to be a woman back in the 1800s and she's been somebody to
like, challenge the norm ever since she was a child and of course I just really
enjoyed that. It was really, really wonderful and there is a really cute
love story in here as well. It's a really good ending. Out of all of the like
Victorian classics that I've read this is definitely one of the more enjoyable
ones and I ended up giving this four stars.
This ticks off the emoji that is the caution sign, so the caution emoji, and
that challenge is like, a book that you were cautious to start. So that's all
done. So like I said, I'm just getting home from work and the gym and I have a couple
days at home by myself. Brett's at work for a few days and I intend to get a lot
of reading done because I'm all about myself so what else am I gonna do? And so
tonight I'm planning to get through Obsidio. I'm more than halfway through
it and I'm loving it so I'm hoping to get through that tonight. I'm also in the
middle of a children's book called The Hundred Dresses so that's something that
could potentially get done tonight as well. And then I'm gonna move on to
Prisoner of Azkaban I think. I think that's my plan for the rest of this week.
I'll keep you updated. It's the 22nd and last night right before midnight, right
before I went to bed, I finished Obsidio by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff.
This is the third and final installment of the Illuminae Files trilogy and oh
my god. I read a really decent chunk of this last night. I read over 300 pages of
it last night and I just like could not stop reading. I got to a point where it was
like 9:30 and I still hadn't eaten dinner or made myself dinner or anything
like that and I'm like, "I need a stop so I can eat". I did not want to put this
down. This was excellent. This is a great, great ending to the trilogy. You get to
see all the characters that you've met before in the series and they're all
kind of just like fighting in the final battle of this trilogy and it's just so
fantastic. My heart was like torn in like 30 different directions throughout the
entire finale of this book. You're led to think one thing and then it's really
another thing and like, of course I can't say a lot because this is the third book
in a trilogy, so I don't want to spoil you guys, but this ending was so great.
Very fantastically done. It's really hard to end a series and I think Amie Kaufman
and Jay Kristoff did a really great job. I really loved the series. I'm going to
probably do a series review, a non-spoiler series review for you guys
in the next couple of weeks, but just know that Obsidio is a great ending to
the trilogy. I gave it five stars. This is the first five-star book that I've given
in the series. Everything else has been high fours for me, but this was a five. I
really loved the way that they ended it. The plot lines just kept me turning the
pages and I did not want to stop. So five stars for Obsidio. Really happy with this
book. I've come to a point where I've realized that I've read eight books in
the month of March. Four of them have been four-star reads and four of them
have been five-star reads, so March is doing great.
Good job March. So we'll see how the rest of the reading goes this month. I have a
Harry Potter reread which I know I'll probably give five stars to cuz it's
Harry Potter, but yeah. I've been reading a lot of really great books this month
and I just kind of wish that every month was like this. I feel like this is how
your reading should be. You should be reading four and
five star books all the time in my opinion. Anyway I need to eat breakfast
and go to work. Why is it still snowing? It's supposed to be spring! Make it stop!
So it is the 26th of March and I'm about to cook myself some dinner. I'm just
chopping up some broccoli. Need something healthy to eat cuz I've been
snacking on junk while I've been reading today and I've actually finished two
books since I last talked to you. This has been kind of the trend of this video.
As I finish a book and then I'm either like too tired because I'm finishing at
night to update you guys, or I just like don't feel like pulling the camera out
at the moment, but I have finished two books. So I want to talk to you guys
about them while chopping up my broccoli. Ffirst book I finished was The Hundred
Dresses by Eleanor Estes. This is a children's book that I found for really
cheap on Kindle and it's a book that I think I read when I was in, I believe
fifth grade, and this is a book about bullying. It's about the these school
girls who, they had a Polish immigrant in their class and a lot of the girls would
make fun of her because she would always say, "oh I have, I have a hundred dresses
in my closet at home". Sorry. My camera died and I didn't
want to wait to charge my battery so I switched in my phone.
But basically the girls are bullying her because they don't believe that she has
a hundred dresses because she wears the same dress to school every day and the
dress that she wears to school every day is really like worn and everything and
then the main character is feeling very conflicted. She's like I don't like the
way we speak to her but she doesn't really have the courage to kind of stand
up to her friends who are making fun of this girl and it talks a lot about like
I'm the conflict that you might face when trying to confront your peers about
bullying and it's really interesting. Like it didn't
address bullying outright in terms of like using the terminology "bullying" and
things like that, but it does talk about bullying and we read it - I think I was in
fifth grade as a class and kind of discussed the topic of bullying and I
just I really loved it. It's a really good book. I still loved it. I read it
when I was what, 10 or 11 the first time through and I'm 27 now. Still loved it
and I gave it five stars. It's only about 80 pages long on Kindle so it's a lot
shorter. I think it's a physical copy but it's really good. The hundred dresses
completed the e-book challenge which was the phone emoji for emojiathon. Then
finished Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Book number three in the
Harry Potter series. Prisoner of Azkaban - I have not revisited the story since the
first time I read it. Chamber of Secrets and Prisoner of Azkaban, I don't believe
I ever watched the movie all the way through since its release and I have since
watched Chamber of Secrets of course and I don't think I've ever watched
Prisoner of Azkaban. I've seen like the scene where Hermione punches Malfoy
in the face and I feel like I've seen like, one other scene, but other than that
I don't think I've ever watched the movie. So this was the first time I've
revisited the story since I think I was probably like 12 or 13 when I read
Prisoner of Azkaban and it was such a cool experience, like going back to the
book and reading it the first time and kind of revisiting the story. There's so
much that I forgot about the story and of course what I remember when I first
read it when I was a kid, it was one of my favorite books in the series and it's
just so much different than the other books thus far in the series and I just
really enjoyed myself reading it and of course gave it five stars and I will be
doing my reread review in the month of April. So be on the lookout for
that. I really enjoyed my time reading it so A+ I'm really liking this reread
that I'm doing so far this year. That fulfilled the wizard emoji
challenge which is to read a fantasy book. So works out. At this point we have
five full days left of the month, so five full days left of emojiathon. I think I
can realistically finish three more books. I'm almost done Outlander, I'm going
to start Blue Lily, Lily Blue tonight, and I think I can finish Simon vs. the Homo
Sapiens Agenda by the end of the month. I think those are the three books I'm going to
try and really finish and that will get me at least one BNGO and I do have a
couple other books that are shorter that I could potentially squeeze in for maybe
a second BINGO. It just might be only a one BINGO kind of read-a-thon but we'll
see. I'll keep you guys updated. Hey! So it is the last day of the month. It's
9:45 p.m. so I wanted to do one last check in with you guys because I
probably won't be reading any other books, but I did manage to read
three more books since the last time I checked in with you so I wanted to go
through those really quick. The first book that I finished was Outlander by
Diana Gabaldon. This is my audiobook for emojiathon and really disappointed with this.
I didn't really care for it that much. If you don't know what Outlander is, it's
about this woman who travels through time back to the 1700s and falls in love
with and marries this Scotsman named Jamie and really it's just kind of about
her transitioning back in time to the 1700s from 1940's I think and that's -
there, like in my eyes there wasn't really anything super exciting about
this plot and I thought it was really weird that the main character didn't
really have a very strong reaction to traveling back in time like at all. She's
like, she has like a husband in her modern time
and she doesn't even really seem to miss him. She doesn't think it's weird that
she's back in time. I thought there were gonna be more scenes with the time
travel aspect to it but there wasn't and I thougth this was really dull. The writing
is really well done. It's very descriptive but the plot is
just again, really dull and I didn't enjoy it. I'm giving it 2 stars.
Definitely not gonna continue on with this series. Honestly I don't think it's
worth your time. I then read the third book in The Raven Cycle which is Blue
Lily, Lily Blue by Maggie Stiefvater. This is my buddy read with Michael from
Michael H and ti counted for the buddy read challenge for emojiathon. I really like
this installment of The Raven Cycle. It seems like things are starting to click.
A lot of things are starting to happen in the series and they're starting to be
some payoff to everything that has been building up throughout the course of the
series. I don't want to say too much but I really enjoyed this installment. I'm
really starting to like grow emotionally attached to the characters of the series
and I'm really excited to get to the fourth and final book and know what
happens. I gave this four stars just like I've given all the other books in the
series so far and again I can't wait to conclude this next month. And then today
I spent the entire day reading Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky
Albertalli I picked this up at like 8 a.m. this morning and I just read it all
day. This was so, so cute and I definitely see why people really encourage others
to read this because it's just so well done. It's just adorable and it like
gives you kind of that like highschool butterflies and your tummy kind of
feeling that you got when you had crushes in high school and I just really
loved it. I loved the characters. I love Simon and this was just such a fun read
it's so light-hearted and it will just put a smile right on your face. I gave
this five stars. I had no problems with it at all. I was able to figure out who
the "Blue" character was quite early on in the book but that didn't take away from
just the happiness that this book brought me.
So definitely recommend this. This book fulfilled the challenge of a book that
everybody has been telling you to read and I'm so happy that people have been
telling me to read this for such a long time and that I finally picked it up and
I really do want to go see the adaptation now because it's just
adorable. I loved it. And with that my March reading is done and emojiathon is
done and I was able to get one BINGO which I'm excited about. I was kind of
hoping to maybe get two. I'm very close and a lot of different rows and columns.
I'll leave the BINGO board right on the screen so you can see. I am very close in
a lot of other places. I'm in the middle of a book that would have gotten me a
second BINGO and I thought I might have been able to finish that one today as
well, but I had other things going on today that I had to take care of as well.
So couldn't squeeze it in, but I'm really happy with how I did during emojiathon.
I got a lot of the books that I wanted to read this month done and
enjoyed so many of them. I read a total of thirteen books, twelve of those books
for four or five star ratings, and the only book that didn't get a four or five
was Outlander and it got two stars. So I'd say I had a pretty stellar reading
month in March. Anyway I hope you guys enjoyed this reading wrap-up vlog. I'm
gonna be doing this kind of video again next month because I will be
participating in the O.W.L.s read-a-thon that is the whole month and I kind of
like doing these wrap-up vlogs over the sit-down wrap-up because you you're
getting my kind of immediate reaction and I feel like they're a little bit
more interesting. But let me know what you think about the wrap-up vlog in the
comments if you prefer this over my sit down reading wrap-up videos. You're gonna
get one next month either way, but if you enjoy them maybe I will continue on for
the rest of the year as well. So if you enjoyed this video please leave a big
thumbs up. Subscribe if you haven't already. I do try to make a new video
each and every week and I will see again very soon. Bye!
